Have You Ever Seen An Angel Underwater?!

Published at:  May 15, 2007 6:00:44 AM CDT

Hey, everyone. ”Moriarty” here.

I can’t confirm this, but I can say I’ve heard this in the last few days a few times. We’ll see how it pans out, but for now, take it with a grain of salt.

What we do know is that Universal’s been working to develop THE SUB-MARINER for a while now. Beyond that, this is pure rumor:

BONES star David Boreanaz could be up for the role of "The Sub-Mariner", says SuperheroHype.com.

A scooper for the site says that David recently auditioned for the role in the comic book movie.

For those who don't know much about "The Sub-Mariner", he's Namor, "The son of a human sea captain and of a princess of the mythical undersea kingdom of Atlantis, Namor possesses the super-strength and aquatic abilities of the "Homo mermanus" race. Through the years, he has been alternatively portrayed as a good-natured but short-fused superhero, or a hostile invader seeking vengeance for perceived wrongs that misguided surface-dwellers committed against his kingdom."

Jonathan Mostow is going to direct the movie.

With Jonathan 'U-571' Mostow on board and underwater shenanigans I can hardly wait to see Namor sinking the Bismark, rescuing all the troops from Dunkirk and participating in every WWII naval victory hitherto accredited to the Royal Navy. Though I can actually see David Boreanaz in the role

    by mneth

Namor isnt really that interesting as a caracter. It would be nice to see him in a FF-movie, but in a film of his own? And with Mostow as a director. Not very exiting, no...

    by franklin t marmoset

Does that count?Otherwise, I don't care who they cast in this one as long as they keep those daffy wings on Namor's feet. Apart from the Roger Corman's Fantastic 4, we have yet to see a comic book film that captures the true inanity of the source material. That could all change with this film about a man who is good at swimming and has WINGS ON HIS FEET! Also, his other superpower is that he looks a bit like Spock.

    by catvutt

I've actually grown to like Boreanaz quite a bit, but this is a bad fit. Subby is a brooding, humorless character if there ever was one, and Boreanaz is better when he's allowed some room for comedy. And physically, it really should be someone with a more slender build, not to mention that...oh...wait. Sorry, scratch all that. I just remembered I couldn't give a rat fuck about a Sub-Mariner movie anyway. Carry on.

Captain America Should Be Done Before

    by grammaton cleric binks

they even think of doing this. A listers first, then the rest. And just for the record, Ghost Rider is an A lister. There, I said it. IMDB says Iron Fist with Ray Park should be done by 2008. Get Snipes to do Power Man, then you can get two sequels out of the way in one shot with a Power Man-Iron Fist Marvel Team Up.

    by oisin5199

If he does some serious body sculpting. I mean this is a guy who's half naked most of the time. He can certainly do broody. I just don't see it. They need someone more exotic, probably younger. I think Boreanaz will play a superhero at some point, but probably not this one.

They definitely should be doing a Captain America movie before any other Marvel characters. Captain America is an icon and they keep putting him off. Get with the program Marvel! Sub-Mariner is not going to be a cash cow like they are hoping I'm afraid.

MORE HOMOEROTIC THAN BATMAN & ROBIN

    by thedohdoh

Seriously, when are studios going to learn that men don't want to watch other men soaking wet and shirtless for the duration of a picture. Like that recent Terrence Howard swimming-teacher movie. No offense, but that would have been a better movie for the LOGO channel. And most likely, so will The Fucking Submariner. There's a reason why Superman did terribly: Singer overly sexed up the male role. Tights are not as bad as a drenched muscle man though. Listen up execs. You know it's true.

What's this? 30+ posts and still no Aquaf@g jokes?

    by kai_mah'gra

.......what gives? Maybe these guys should lobby for a mention on Entourage or something. As for the movie itself, it sure sounds like a definite stinkbomb just waiting to go boom, but at least Boreanaz's involvement can assure the studio of a solid staple Buffyverse/Whedonesque/Browncoat/Angel refugee fanbase, - and we all know what that means, right People? Especially if Serenity taught us anything 2 years ago:.....that's right....you guessed it..........SPIDEY-LIKE NUMBERS AT THE BOX-OFFICE!!!!!! Plus, even if it does bomb at the box-office (....in the very very very unlikely event Browncoats, simmer down now) at least we know the DVD will do "great" numbers, as Teal'c would put it. Angel/Whedonverse Alumnii+C-list Superhero movies, go together like Jelly and Peanut butter on bread,....... kinda like Whedon+Wonder Woman. Oh wait, bad example........:Ok I'm done now.

    by keysersoze

seriously? i mean, even before Aquaman?

anyway, for those saying Boreanaz needs to get better physically, i think you're probably remember the Boreanaz from the end of the Angel days...check him out on Bones, he's gotten into really good shape again, more like early Buffy Boreanaz, as opposed to the bloated Angel season five Boreanaz.

He's a bit beefy now. Does anyone watch Bones? He's pretty amusing in that. He has a real flair for comedy that would be better served in something other than a dour, humorless b-level Marvel character.

Wasn't David Self writing this a few years ago and Marvel loved the script? Self had done all of this research and whatnot? Note to Self: Julian McMahon as Namor. Yes, the guy that plays Dr. Doom.

Oops! Wrong Talkback ;). Anyway, I do not expect anything from a Namor movie. I would suggest for him to appear alongside the F4, but we know the turds those films are. As a poster above me said, it's best for a Namor movie set in WWII.
