James Cameron stuff

Published at:  Mar 18, 1999 9:19:57 AM CST

Glen here...

...with some news about what James Cameron is up to.

MARKO RAMIUS, THE FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, and TATIANA NIKOLAEVNA
DONSKAYA have been hard at work over in Russia.

Despite the singularly oppressive weather
(and the rather bad runny noses which came with it), the stealthy trio managed to shimmy up a
rickety phone pole to intercept some telephonic communications and FAX transmissions.

In a scene shockingly reminiscent of various Warner Bros. cartoons, our heroes fell to the
ground when their pole was chopped down by a renegade splinter group - who dragged our trio
away and tortured them endlessly, hoping to find out State Secrets with which they could barter for a
suitcase sized Tactical Nuclear Weapon.

Well, the splinter group had no clue who James Cameron was, quickly realized there were no
State Secrets to be had, and released our pathetic trio to issue this report. I have interpreted it to
the best of my ability. I hope it makes sense...

Jessica Alba being
considered for lead in Cameron's DARK ANGEL TV series ((HREF="http://www.aint-it-cool-news.com/display.cgi?id=3044">previously covered on
Coaxial
)). This from CAA sources.

Cameron may dive TITANIC again - smaller ROVs to penetrate deeper into ship's
wreckage. Other locations to follow? Maybe BISMARK; downed Soviet NUCLEAR
SUBMARINE; geological "hot sites" = thermal vents on ocean floor. Documentary may
follow...

That's all they said before hurrying across the formidable tundra - something about catching a
Gulf Fire out of Leningrad...

    Cameron is God

    by bill mulder

JMS wasn't fuckin' kiddin Cameron is God and pretending like you don't like Titanic is real cool because almost everyone who professes hatred for that fine movie liked it the first time they saw (assuming it was early on in its release before it was billed as the best movie ever which it isn't) but then it made the "fatal" mistake of becoming popular and 95% of the aint it cool readers say that they hate the damn thing. Humorously the same thing will happen with The Phantom Menace (which I'm also looking forward to). To get back on topic I can't wait for anything Cameron does TV or movie. Keep 'em, Jim!

    Wrote their scripts?

    by robert k s

Well, he may have typed their scripts, but check out the legally enforced story creation credit to Harlan Ellison on the videocassettes. Robert K S

Screw JC, I'll Watch for JESSICA ALBA!! Hottest teen babe around

    by wesley snipes

She was the mixed causcasian-hispanic-looking jailbait in the Flipper TV series. She's also appearing in Idle Hands
(The "You're kinky!" and "ding dong ditch" girl) and Never Been Kissed (one of the trio of mean bitches). She's so _sexy_! When she was in Flipper, I couldn't find a darn bit of info on her. Now, a few years later, I see her appear in the aforementioned trailers, and suddenly the net is filled with 10,000+ hit sites about her! Screw you, I was there first! "1994, undergound tapes, nigga! West side!"

(I know what you're probably thinking right now, "get a grip, you deranged bastard." So save it.) :)

Anyway, if you're reading this Lightstorm people, put Jessica Alba in and you're guaranteed at least one viewer! And in Europe (where she's more popular apparently), it'll be huge!

    James Cameron is DOG!

    by megatron

I know that whatever it is he makes it will cost a hell of a lot of money, but look like it should have only cost a tenth of what it did. Titanic's effects were not ground breaking. all the did was figure out bigger, more complex, and more expensive ways to end up with effects that have been done justas well long before. The Abyss was a great film, and opened the door for computer animation in films, but Terminator 2 didn't do anything for comupter effects. Morphing effects are rarely done anymore because they were a gimick that never looked good. Terminator 2 was written around an effect. The effect was developed for The Abyss in order to create the image he had in his mind. Terminator 2 was written around this effect, and ended up being nothing but a mindless gimick movie. Jurassic Park was the film that showed how effective computer effects could be. James Cameron hasn't done anything worthwhile since the Abyss.

P.S. Would those legally enforced story creation credits for Harlan Ellison be on the Terminator box? There should be the same thing on the Aliens box for Robert Heinlein, since Aliens is just a rip-off of Starship Troopers, even down to the power armor (loader).

    Cameron just okay

    by jimmer72

Look, just like Lucas, this guy doesn't seem to have an original bone in his body. TITANIC was a remake, TRUE LIES was Cameron's take on James Bond, T2 was a sequel to a film that truly pissed of Harlan Ellison, ALIENS--again, a sequel, and THE ABYSS, well, even though it's my favorite JC flick, it's still CLOSE ENCOUNTERS meets DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL by way of, I don't know, THE DEEP. And we keep hearing about either a PLANET OF THE APES remake or a SPIDER-MAN movie. And like Lucas, his scripts are just as good (that's not a compliment). If there was ever a director that truly could have been called God, it's... Joel Schumacher! No, it's Kubrick. And now God is dead. So where does that leave Jimbo?

    I stand by original comment

    by bill mulder

Cameron is God. Speilberg is the master and I really don't think that Cameron is a Speilberg imitator. Lucas has definitely had his share of flops (Howard The Duck, Radioland Murders, evrything that isn't Star Wars, Indiana Jones, or American Graffitti) Cameron's worst movie is True Lies. Lucas or Speilberg would kill to have their worst movie be True Lies and in all fairness, Lucas and Speilberg have been in the game almost 15 years longer than Cameron. T2 showed the world what CG could do so to say that it did nothing for computer effeects just shows your ignorance. Not to say that Jurassic Park didn't do that too but T2 showed the world what could be done. Aliens is a sequel that is better than the original and Alien is rip-off of old B-movies. Titanic, despite what all you hipsters say, is a classic.

    Titanic vs. Schindler's List

    by bill mulder

If you compare Titanic and Schindler's List the winner is obvious: Schindler's List. Anyone would tell you that (including James Cameron) I like both Speilberg and Cameron. I never said that Speilberg wasn't good I meant that I enjoy Jim Cameron's work more. The emphasis on the I. It was my opinion, I didn't say that anyone who differed with my opinion couldn't possibly be right. I obviously don't think Cameron is the greatest film maker ever I just happen to like his movies more than anyone else making movies today. Yes, Speilberg is far more gifted but so what. There's enough room in the world for Cameron and Speilberg. I'm rooting for Speilberg to win the Oscar again. 1941 is worse than True Lies (even with the misagony) To sum up: I like Jim Cameron and I like Steven Speilberg. Speilberg is better but I like Jim Cameron more. Thank you.

    cameron

    by biggie

what's with all the negativity against cameron? is it that he made titanic, a movie that too many guys will deny liking? hey, i openly admit that i thought it was a great movie. and the argument about him being god, i don't know what you guys are trying to say. no director is god, though if i had to choose the greatest, in my mind that would be spielberg (success and wide acclaim cannot be argued with). but let's put it this way, cameron is not an imitator of anyone. hell, he used that blue danube walts thingamajig in true lies and titanic because of kubrick, but i don't think that could be considered imitating. sure, some of the stuff he uses has been used before, but so what? i've always found his movies entertaining and technologically groundbreaking (most of the time). and george lucas? i'd say he's a better producer than director, since he's only had two directorial hits and working on a surefire third. he's obviously got creative genius and all that, but i don't think it's all in the directorial side of him. and anyway, a lot of people are much worse directors than cameron, and also imitators. just to name a few, emmerich is the poor man's spielberg, michael bay is the mtv style poor man's version of cameron (just my opinion), mimi leder is the "i'm the most terrible director in the world but don't know it because i'm a woman and steven spielberg gave me a job for no apparent reason" version of spielberg, and don't forget that freakshow renny harlin, who should always be remembered as the homeless man's john woo. i know, i kinda rambled on there, but i had to try and get my point across. the great ones, like spielberg, kubrick, hitchcock, kurosawa, etc. will always be better than cameron, but to be better than cameron is to be one of the greatest directors in history.

    One more time

    by bill mulder

I'd like to congratulate Biggie on his above comments he has gotten it right. For the record I don't like the misagony in True Lies. I just like TL more than 1941. I find the misagony in TL wierd because Cameron usually makes his female characters strong but in that case he sure seemed angry at woemn in about the second third of that movie.

    My take on this.......

    by robinp

.......is that some of you need to take a deep breath and relax.
Cameron is NOT a God !
But then again, I don't think he's the bum he's made out to be either !
Think Terminator, T2, The Abyss and Aliens !
Without a shred of a doubt, some of the most exciting movies of the past few years.
Think True Lies.....made at a time where there was a lull in the Bond films, a time where the British tabloid press (spit on them !) were putting forward the case (on slow news days) at there would be no more Bond films, they'd had their day.
Along comes Cameron and gives that particular genre a shot in the arm and a kick in the ass !
All of a sudden, Bond is back !!!
    Big time !!!!!!
    Coincidence ? I don't think so !

    Now Titanic.
Hail Uncapie, he hit the nail on the head......I wastched "A Night To Remember" and "Titanic" back to back, and the similarities are stunning.
I liked Titanic, I liked it very much, no secret there, but identifying it as a remake with color photography, a better musical score and state of the art f/x does not denigrate its power.
How far can you go with a story that everybody knows the conclusion of anyway.

Oh, and JMS......who gives a gnat's fart whether E1 beats "Titanic" at the box office. Going to the theater and having a good time is what matters. Leave the worrying and agonising about the profits to Cameron and Lucas, you just sit down, take a deep breath, unclench and enjoy the movie

    Spielberg

    by webhead

Spielberg's one of my favorite directors. It was Steven who put comedy back into cartoons. The likes of Animaniacs and Tiny Toons are modern classics. As soon as spielberg went to Dreamworks, WB toons turned crap. And ever thought that sometimes script has almost a bigger part than direction. Everyone awed at the the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park, which meant that they could slip in a pretty shallow script and no one would notice.

    Best Films?

    by clarkgoble

Lucas sure has had his share of flops the last while. However I'm not sure it's fair to compare the works he produced with the works he directed. If we do that then we really ought to compare apples with apples. Remember all those horribly Spielberg produced movies in the 80's?

As for Cameron - he really hasn't done much producing. I'd add that I think his film before Terminator about a bunch of flying fish that kill people was far worse than even Lucas' flops.

As for True Lies - I liked it. I thought the point of the middle half was how the wife overcame her subjugated role and then becaem her own woman by the end of the film. The mysogyny of Swartzenegger in the strip scene was really indicative of all her life up to that time. By keeping her in the dark as his wife, Swartzenegger had been guilty of just that sort of relationship. Only now it was overt rather than covert.

Now I admit that Cameron didn't handle this too deftly. But then I don't think Cameron can do subtlty too well. Witness the subplots in the Abyss and the entire film Titanic.

    the naked emporer

    by angel

it's funny how somebody writes, "cameron is no god--but steven spielberg is!" or vice versa. the lack of objectivity in your tastes doesn't support anybody's claims of directorial deification. again, cameron is a brilliant technician with a strong story sense and no real screenwriting skills. which is why 'titanic' wasn't oscar nominated for--guess what? screenplay. real writers know the truth. spielberg is an emotional stylist with limited depth. his admitted illiteracy ruins his chances at creating genuine art. lucas? well, he's turned into everything he warned against. a greedy technocratic dictator as secluded as kubrick, who was -the last great filmmaker, but another victim of style over substance (100 takes of a scene might not be necessary if you already have a good scene)...
