NBC Buys More Science Fiction: JOURNEYMAN & BIONIC!! Plus Josh Schwartz’ CHUCK!! Plus FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS 2.X!!

Published at:  May 10, 2007 8:38:38 PM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

It looks like the success of "Heroes" has emboldened NBC to stick with the strange. (Bet they're glad they didn't give up after "Surface" tanked!)

The network doesn’t announce its fall slate till Monday, but Mike Ausiello at TV Guide already has some of its key components:

* “The Bionic Woman,” a scifi drama about a cyborg babe, from writer-producer David Eick (“Battlestar Galactica”) and writer Laeta Kalogridis (“Alexender,” “Battle Angel”).

* “Journeyman,” a scifi drama about a dude who keeps traveling back through time to fix stuff, from writer Kevin Falls (“The West Wing,” “North Shore”).

* “Chuck,” an "Alias"-y adventure about a twentysomething secret agent, from “OC” mastermind Josh Schwartz.

* “Life,” about a cop who returns to the force after spending two years in prison for a crime he didn’t commit, from writer Rand Ravich (“The Astronaut’s Wife,” “Candyman 2”).

* And “Friday Night Lights” Season Two!

All now have series orders!

Read all of Ausiello’s report here!

Oh the originality. I am willing to sell my idea to NBC for only $9.95 and parking validation for the meeting- its a show about a group of police officers who solve crime while dealing with their own personal issues.

still old. The Bionic Woman? seriosly they're carrying this joke a little far...

what's next... The New A-Team... More Diff'rent Strokes... or... new from David Eick, an edgy reboot of Alf, he's back and he's PISSED! (uh, that's really upset, for any of our TB'ers from across the Pond... but then didn't Alf really like beer? ...so it works either way.)

    by jimmy rabbitte

...a year from now, all of these shows will be getting cacelled anyway. The networks' unwillingness to let a show with modest ratings find it's audience is the main reason I usually don't bother following anything new. The fact that they're not coming up with anything original is only a liitle extra fuel for an already roaring fire.

I've read the script. Remember how OC kept getting more annoyingly self-referential as the series went on, until it was just un-freaking-bearable? Well, this show STARTS at that point. Also: not that exciting. There's real action, and there's McG action. This is the latter.

    by danielkurland

The success of something like Heroes IS a rarity, and although it's nice to see investments like this, stick it out for Studio 60. Also, after all the network politic garbage this year, I find myself saying that CBS has become my favorite network, in spite of barely watching any programming on it. If I was pitching a show, I'd definitely take it there.

    The Journeyman Project

    by childofmen

Is there any clear idea on exactly what the "Journeyman" show is? So far still all I've seen is the basic description (guy travels back in time to fix stuff). Between that basic premise and the name it is hard not to think it has something to do with the games, but it is so vague that it seems like it might not have anything to do with it. Personally I'd dig a TV series based on the Journeyman Project, but I am wondering how much, if anything, this show actually has to do with the old games. Who would even own the rights to the Journeyman Project anyway? Presto Studios closed down, and I don't recall hearing if anyone bought up their IP or not.

    by ninja nerd

NBC wasn't the axe holder on that one. CBS didn't market or promote the show worth a damn...nothing like the steaming turd that was "Threshold"...and surprise!, it was dropped. With a giant cliffhanger. The only time I howled more was the last Twin Peaks when Dale Cooper looked into the mirror and Evil Bob (who actually works where I do now) looked back.

    Scheduling people...

    by tomshaw

NBC already announced they want to go cheaper with their programming; most people are assuming something along the lines of 11 hours of scripted programming (2 hours M/T/W/F, 3 hours on Thursday).
Shows we know are coming back:
Heroes, Las Vegas, Medium, SVU, Office, Earl, 30 Rock, and now FNL.
That's 6.5 hours already covered! Add in these 4 new shows, and probably ER, as its ratings are acceptable and little here looks good to replace it, and the entire scripted schedule is covered.Even assuming a couple show up as mid-series replacements, we're looking at just about all of NBC's other shows have to be getting the axe: L&O, CI, Studio 60, Crossing Jordan, etc. all just got whacked (well, CJ might show up as a midseason, but I wouldn't put money on it).Oh yeah, the shows themselves: I'll be shocked if two of them survive through November.
