High Resy Robots Galore!! TRANSFORMERS Images Via Bay's Site!!

Published at:  May 10, 2007 9:33:42 AM CDT

Merrick again...

Michael Bay’s site has posted some very high resolution images of the Autobots and Decepticons from the upcoming movie.

I don’t believe they bring us any character we haven’t already seen in the other media that’s out there, although these are by far (unless I missed something) the clearest, up-closiest shots we’ve gotten to date & reveal the scope of detail that’s been thrown into the design of some of these renderings.

The Helicopter Dude is my personal favorite...I love that guy!

BEHOLD!!!

    by owen meany

And if so, where was Deceptacon that transformed into a giant hand to pull Megatron's trigger? Or were the people who made the Transformers subtly trying to support the NRA attitude of "Deceptacons don't kill people, people kill people."?

He even looks like he used to. Now, why can't anyone else have a face? I mean, don't tell me it'd be too human-looking, because they all have two arms, two legs, a head and ten fingers. They do look somewhat cool, I gotta admit, but I, too, think the designs are too busy. In close-up it's hard to even tell what I'm seeing. But all that said, they can make lotsa changes if they want if the actual movie is a good one. Though I really don't want to see Optimus pissed on.

They don't even look like they have solid forms! Real world complexities or not, those look WAY to detailed. Besides, the original toys could transform from realistic looking vehicles to simplistic robots and THEY existed in the real world.

Why does Michael Bay keep getting these HUGE budget movies? Sorry, compared to other movies, his aren't that great, sorry. Pearl Harbor? Armageddon? The Rock? Bad Boys? Good mindless entertainment, sure, but will they stand the test of time or just be forgotten as summer blockbusters?

Eh, whatever. He's not getting my $10.

Is it me or do the look like those junkyard sculptures people do? Megatron especially, they all look far too complicated. To me you could have realistic transformations and kept them looking a bit more like Transformers. I just think ILM gets bored and forces themselves to do the most complicated thing possible because it makes them feel cool. I will say that I think Jazz is the best looking of the and that Frenzy looks like an anorexic Johnny 5.

    Cool.

    by mr. nice gaius

Some of these are new. Some of them are not. We've already seen the images for Prime, Bumblebee, Jazz, and Frenzy. However, the shots of Ironhide, Megatron, Starscream, and Blackout are new. And while I find the detail amazing, the poses in these hi-res stills do nothing to help sell the designs to the crybaby G1ers. In comparison, the full CGI shot of Prime from Entertainment Weekly a couple weeks ago was incredible. This one just makes him look awkward and distorted.Regarding Megatron & Starscream - I've got to say, I actually dig Meg's face now. I think it looks great (I still think the Cybertronian body bears little resemblance to the original). Now, Starscream looks leaner and meaner than I thought. He looks like a legitimate threat to Megatron. And Blackout looks really cool - he benefits most from these images. The character bios provided by the screenwriters are a neat little exercise in nostalgia and they definitely reflect the characters as I remember them. Let's hope that characterization is actually portrayed in the final film.I've little doubt that the fully rendered & colored robots will look awesome on the big screen. While I'm sorry the hardcore/G1/TINO crowd feels they aren't getting the movie they all collectively hallucinated, I offer this classic clip as a reminder of the need to move on - http://tinyurl.com/2qgjcp

As shown by his shit comparison. Try looking up any number of the fantastic comic book, binal tech/alternators, or masterpiece designs and see how absolutely distant and shitty the work that bay's monkeys have done.

This movie isn't Transformers, and fans of the original wanted something that resembled the G1 characters and plot. Unfortunately Bay and his monkeys couldn't handle that.

So, what we get is complete and totally ass, like the anus mouth of Bay's Megatron.

Well, it's just too bad that once you get to sit through this shit storm you'll either be one of two people. You will either come out of there saying how badass the action was and how much you loved this pile, or you will come out of there having paid attention to the story and realize that despite the action this was not the transformers. Plus you'll wonder what the fuck was with all the shit about Sam and the girl he wants to screw.

Oh and here's a spoiler for all those who like the Jazz design. Don't get too attached to it. He won't be back. Jazz dies. Yup, I said it. So what. I warned your ass with the spoiler bit.

I hate to break this to you but, the movie is called "Transformers", the robots do (for the most part) resemble their G1 namesakes, and folks who are looking forward to this film are not all necessarily "Bay Apologists". As for the plot: I love the gross "It's All About Sam Trying to Get Laid" OVERSIMPLIFICATION you guys keep heaping on this film. It's such a fucking cop-out based on an often misquoted Mikey Bay. Yeah right! As if they're going to forget the stuff about 2 factions of warring robots who take their battle to Earth, befriend a young human named Sam, while all Hell breaks loose. by epictetus

All of these designs look like modified copies of General Grievous from Star Wars. I'm guessing ILM saved a lot of money by just opening up several copies of Grievous and altering the splines to make them into Transformers.

only one thing holding me back from being...

    by ckone

completely excitied about this movie. I WANT to be excited, but truly, those damn flames bug the crap out of me. Seeing the detail in these designs actually works for me. I think all prior imagery up to this point was either too shaded so as not to reveal anything, but flames, or too small of a file to let the detail in these designs show up, the prior imagery seemed more mish mashed, THESE look a lot more cohesive, I can see the parts of Truck in Optimus, and I can see transformer like designs in Bumblebee, like the doors flying out behind him...These actually look like autobots to me. So, I am sold, except for the flames... I don't care to read the scripts and or other story elements as I want to see that when I watch the film..but Otherwise, I can't deny how cool these images look, and they do look like really cool transformers...sigh..but Optimus still has flames...I can't understand that one...

THe only reason Bay couldn't respect Transformers like say, Ironman looks exactly the same, or SUperman or Batman looks exactly the same on celuloid... but for Bay, Transformers is based on a toy. Thats the only reason why Megatron is a steaming scrap pile and not millions of year old advanced alien species.

Movie Iron Man looks cool and hes based on a comic, but movie Megatron gets the shaft cause a toy/cartoon/comic line isn't good enough for Bay. WHich is why someone else should have directed. Bay never got it.

    Okay, listen...

    by zb.brox

I admit I'm a Transformers geek and I'm not a fan of Bay. But I can put that aside to just look at these designs.

They're bad. Really, they are. Some of you really need to get over (as Bay does) the idea that you can see all kinds of metal bits sticking out makes them look "realistic". Think for a second what a car actually looks like. Even if you turn it upside down, open the hood, rip up the floor... You're not gonna see anything like that. Look, here's an example: This is what a car looks like: http://tinyurl.com/yqne6m Here's what a cool killer robot looks like: http://tinyurl.com/288gj7 You see what I'm saying? There's no reason for it to be that big a mess. In the Iron Hide picture, you can't tell the arms form the legs. In the Blackout picture, I had to work to find the *head*. And most of them are all very similar colors, without strong outlines they're going to be hard to distinguish form one another. I'm not advocating for a total G1 design (though that could look pretty good, if you've seen that fake TF animation test with the white-and-blue Prime...), but these look really awful. I'm open to change, I never bitched about the X-Men's costume changes, or organic webbing, or anything. But these designs are quite literally a mess, and it has nothing to do with "realism" and everything to do with them, well, looking like a mess. And please, we need to stop referring to the business of these designs as "detail". "Detail" is when you can make out the fine points of something, such as when you can see the stitchwork on hand-crafted clothing in Lord of the Rings, or when you can see the environment around th T1000 reflected in his body. These designs don't show "details" they show "unnecessary things added on, or broken into smaller pieces to give an impression of complexity." The "doodads" quote form Bay above is proof enough of that.

I could be wrong, but I remember reading Raimi (or whoever) wanted to go with the organic webshooters because, unlike the radioactive spider from the comics, the movie Peter Parker is bitten by a genetically modified "superspider." Long story short, they wanted his powers to be more biology based, meaning Peter's DNA was altered and his web-generating ability became an internal, organic thing. Also made for a nice coming-of-age sexual reference they way they did it. Others have said that the shooters and cartridges, as designed by Peter, would not have been as credible as they're presented in the comics. Sure, we can buy that Peter is a genius, but visually and practically, they may not have come off as well. This point is debatable, as you've seen in the TBs, but I think the consensus is that the organic version in the movies played off very nicely. The only thing that isn't addressed is whether there's some sort of hole in his glove for the webs to come out. Clearly, there must be, but we never see it. They also don't explain how Peter's wall-climbing abilities are not hampered by his suit, gloves, or tennis shoes.

Somehow the last few words were excised. The real intent of my comment was to say that Bay's Transformers becoming this year's Ang Lee's Hulk is Bay's and the studio's nightmare scenario. As for me personally, well, I don't get the Transformers, never did, and doubt I'll be seeing it at the gigaplex.

Providing a picture of a Terminator does nothing to make your point. The Terminators do not transform and therefore don't have to account for items not associated with their internal skeletal framework.Take a closer look at the structure of these Transformers. You'll notice that there is no cheating involved. Every item from the alternate mode is accounted for in the robot mode. There is nothing added or taken away. THAT is the realism. THAT is the detail. The amount of detail in Blackout's rotor section alone is enough to qualify as a fine-point or "stichwork".As for the coloring, I think it's rather obvious that these images (though hi-res) aren't exactly as they will appear in the film. Examples? The eye colors, the missing fuel tanks on Optimus's shoulders, the added coloring we've already seen on Starscream during the 2 second piece of footage in the TV spot.If you don't like the designs because they don't match your G1 ideal, that's fine. But to casually ignore the level of detail appearing in these designs is silly.

...Michael Bay says he wanted more realistic desiggns. Personally, I feel the G1 designs were more realistic. You can see they used to be cars, planes and what not. That's realistic to me. "the robots do (for the most part) resemble their G1 namesakes"

I'm guessing you've never seen a single Transformer in your life then, as these random looking collections of scrap metal bear zero resemblance to the real designs. The only exception is Prime who bears a very slight passing resemblance to the real design, unfortunately this just serves to reinforce how badly they've fucked up his design.

And I still can't believe people buy that bullshit about the original designs being too blocky for the big screen, stuff like this: http://tinyurl.com/hhwc6 shows the original designs would have been fine.

    Mr. Nice Gaius--

    by zb.brox

The Terminator image proves nothing? No. Both a car and a robot have complex parts and details--as both those pictures did--but both can keep them perfectly simple in form and outline. The idea that a car's smooth shapes and simple forms must be broken into jagged shards to turn into something that looks like a robot is false. These robots do not have to look as ridiculous complicated as they do, and that's a fact. Perhaps I didn't make myself clear enough--I am not denying that these are detailed pictures. I am saying that the "bits and pieces" look has *nothing* to do with detail. Obviously there is detail--the wearing paint on Iron Hide is a good example. That's great. But for all you say that "every piece is accounted for", that does nothing to explain why these robots should look like such a mess--the question is not "where did those pieces go?" it's "where did those pieces come from? I don't doubt that these designs can very effectively transform into vehicles and have every piece accounted for. http://tinyurl.com/gzegy This does the same thing without looking like it's been pounded into shards first. The thing about these designs is that things are broken up into pieces so much that they are largely unrecognizable. Take a look at Bumblebee--Where the hell are all the large, smooth, yellow plates that the Camaro has going for it? They've all been broken into pieces. That is *totally* unnecessary, and it raises serious design flaws. 1: Outlines are extremely important in design. If you can't tell what something is in silhouette, it's going to be difficult to make it out in general, and particularly as it moves. Look at Iron Hide, Blackout, and Megatron. Imagine their shadows. They're indistinct as all hell. 2: The reason that army fatigues, tigers, and zebras are all spotty and stripy is that humans and other animals see largely through outlines. If you have enough shapes on a form, it blends more and more into its background. That's a problem almost all of these designs have--too many shapes, and too many lines going in contrasting directions. Again, look at Iron Hide--just what the hell is that to the right below his face? Is there one on the other side? Are his legs, bent, or just really short? It's virtually impossible to tell. Similarly, this is why the flame son Optimus (beyond being cheesy) are such a stupid design move--they're yet another form of camouflage. Take a look at Optimus a second. He's one of the simplest designs here, yet as soon as his shoulder passes in front of his knee, I'm not sure where one starts and the other begins. Then look at something more complex, like Blackout--can you honestly tell me you're going to be able to keep track of all that in motion? Don't try and pin me as someone complaining because they don't look like the G! ideal. I really don't care that much. But these are bad designs, they're messy, they're difficult to look at and identify, difficult to tell apart, and they don't create any kind of iconic or distinctive look for people to take away from them. If you think they look cool, great for you. If you're impressed by the artistry of the effects guys, great, I'm sure they worked hard. But the designs themselves are trying way, way too hard.

    by veritasses

they shouldn't have exposed all the mechanical "innards". Getting the Bionicle license would've made more sense for a design standpoint. And I'm not against "updating" the classic Transformer designs or anything but I have to say that what they've done for the movie is pretty darn awful. "Frenzy" is just criminal.

    by surround sound

The big issue for me is how they will transform. So far, Star Scream's body sucks and I agree that these were way over designed. They are supposed to have some kind of a design for their "human shape" as they do for their car shape...all I see here is over-complicated, craziness organic looking robots (except Optimus). I predict a sucky movie.

Thank you for posting the link to the spectacular Original Classic G1 Masterpiece Cartoon, 'The Dam Fight'. Having now seen the incredible quality of the animation (oh, the breath-taking action!), and the phenomenal design of the G1 robots (built by kids for kids?) that look as though they'd have trouble transforming into ANYTHING, I can now compare to Bay's TF clips and admit I was wrong. I mean, who really wants to see incredibly detailed and realised believeable transforming giant robots in a live action film? Not this callsign! Give me a shitty 80's cartoon/toy commercial with sub-par production values any day... Why we all rightfully hate Michael Bay.

    by 69dude

Let's take a moment to examine exactly why we hate this hack - Ok, firstly he has the worst MacGyver mullet in Hollywood. Not only that, he has not earned a shred of the privilege he has of being at the helm of huge budget movies. Not forgetting that he takes this privilege and squanders it by making some of the worst films ever witnessed since the days of Ed Wood. He confuses real style with shots of flags waving or people walking at 500fps, and makes our eyes bleed with an overabundance of sunset filters. His 'films' cater for the lowest kind of ADHD sufferer, not allowing ten seconds to pass without having to shoehorn in an explosion to keep his unlucky audiences awake. He uses huge sums of money to haphazardly create vapid, shallow, superficial and downright insulting movies to anyone with an ounce of intelligence. Then again, anyone with any intelligence would avoid a Michael Bay movie from the outset. On top of all this complete talent vacuum, the guy is a raging cunt. An egotistical, self-obsessed, shouty, screamy, piss-my-pants-if-i -dont-get-my-own-way fucktard. Anyone remember the scene from American Psycho where he fucks the two whores and poses in the mirror at the same time? Well, friends, that was a slice of Michael Bay's life right there. He is so full of pride, that he forgets the first rule of pride. That it comes before a fall. I, and I don't think I'm alone on this, hope he falls hard, fast and for a very long way. Soon.

Dude, I grew up watching the Transformers everyday after school. I know what the G1 stuff looks like. But you know what? They are not the only source of Transformers canon. How many different incarnations have there been since then (Armada, Cybertron, Beast Wars, HeadMasters)? Take your pick. They all have design faults and shortcomings.Speaking of which, the funniest thing about that Optimus Prime animation test is that it shows just how much of a tin bucket he would be if they stuck with that concept. His chest looks like a hollow bucket and his arms look completely ridiculous. Yeah, I know it LOOKS like the toy and it LOOKS like the cartoon. But there is absolutely no believable mass or strength in that design whatsoever. NOPE, not fine.

Did you assholes all just register to plug this piece of shit? What, you think you're going to try and convince us that these designs are good? Go fuck yourselves. I think the only ones who need convincing are you guys and the fact that these character designs just look like big twisted metal pieces of shit. Yes, metal pieces of shit. This movie's gonna flop like a motherfucker and there ain't a god damn thing you can do about it.

So the robots don't look like they do in the movie. BIG FUCKING DEAL! Sure, I am a Transformers purist but I know when to not worry when Spielberg is behind the scenes with this bad boy. WHo gives a fuck if the robots don't look the way that they do in the cartoon. Bottom line is, Transformers is going to be HUGE FUCKING ROBOTS THROWING DOWN! I hope Michael Bay has the biggest success of his ENTIRE career, not only that but the movie is so fucking amazingly good that not another word will be said against Bay so that everything he fucking touches turns to fucking gold, and then proceeds to find out where all of you haters live and proceed to go to town on all of you, Jay and Silent Bob style. don't bother flaming me back with your stupidity, I am not going to bother reading any of youor responses.

    Mr. Nice Gaius...

    by nonsensical

    Seriously?

You seriously think that these characters look anything like thier G1 counterparts? The closest that any of them come to looking like their G1 forms are Optimus Prime from the neck up and Jazz from the waist up. Ironhide, Bumblebee, Ratchet, Bonecrusher, Barricade, Brawl, Frenzy, Scorpinok, Starscream, and especially Megatron look nothing like their original forms.

    Not even close.

Sure most of them are different vehicles now, but that's not really an excuse now is it.

The fact of the matter is that these are very piss poor designs and that they really don't translate well in motion.

There is a very good reason for making them look like their G1 forms or even close to the G1 forms and Bay missed that. Instead he felt that sticking more parts on them would make them look more "real" when in reality as some of you say "GIANT FUCKING ROBOTS FIGHTING" would look more real if they looked reasonable.

These forms just don't work, and people are laughing at how bad this is.

So far the films of the summer are panning out just as I said in other talkbacks. Spidey or Pirates on top Shrek and Harry Potter behind and Bayformers doing about as good as Superman: Returns. Hell, I bet that Fantastic Four does as well as Bayformers.

Especially if Avi Arad and Tim Story pulled their heads out of their collective asses and changed Galactus to the Giant Planet Devouring Man instead of the storm could. If they didn't then the film will suffer.

It's simply becoming a fact that films of this nature need to stick to the source material in order to do well and be accepted by audiences. That means not only the look of the characters but the main points and ideas behind characterization, plot, and the original stories.

There is an article here about the Iron Man costumes. They look fantastic. Even the treatment of the device on Robert Downey Jr.'s chest looks fantastic as the director appears to stick to the story designs and ideas that made the character great.

There is another article here that talks about the Rock playing Captain Marvel in a Shazam! movie. It mentions him as Black Adam and in all honesty who ever is in charge of casting should realize that he is perfect for that role. The only issue would be finding the perfect person to play Captain Marvel so that the Rock doesn't steal the show.

There are a number of decisions made by hollywood that will either help create a resurgence in great comic book films or send them spiralling into the void of crap that westerns have seemed to vanish into.

Personally I'd love to see them get better and better, but those who are in charge need to think about what they are doing first.

Maybe the PUSSY ON OPTIMUS doesn't have a silhouette because those are obsolete on Cybertron. Maybe it's a stealth feature, haters, ever think of that? Bay us updating the franchise, this isn't the 80's anymore where the outline of a gaping bot-slot can give away what it really is. Anatomy of a Bayformer (TM)

    by jegoing74

Looking at the designs of Bayformers I notice flaws in the design. Some of the robots have only four segmented fingers and some of the robots have no mouths i.e. bumblebee, ratchet etc. Yet if you look at Flamimus Prime bay gave the character a mouth and in the cartoon he had no mouth. They Should rename this movie iconsistentformers.

    This is just nitpicky--

    by zb.brox

--I'm not saying this makes the design suck or anything, but does anyone else think Iron Hide's hands look really stupid? I mean, they'd be fine with a different design, but they're just weirdly *hand*-looking, like they took a piece from C3P0 and stuck it on this big junky monstrosity, y'know? It's weird that they gave him real-looking hands when everything else is just made out of jagged slabs of metal.

Way more... you just have to look, and I think it's funny as hell that if you look at Ironhide's robot form you see all the scratches and shit on his body and then look at his vehicle form and he's basically brand spanking new.

    by gibsonusa returns

Can you imagine the masses that watched Spiderman and Pirates 2 piling up in line for TRANSFORMERS?? No way!!
The concept of a live action Transformers is cheesy enough, but add to that characters that look NOTHING like their TV counterparts, and you have alienated just about everyone. I saw the movie trailer in front of two movies and both crowds laughed their asses off at it. The cardboard standup gets laughed as as people pass by, especially Megatron's face. Visually, this looks to be a joke. Do you truly expect Spiderman 2 level of acceptance on this flaming mess?

    BOLD REPOST

    by zb.brox

    The Terminator image proves
nothing? No. Both a car and a
    robot have complex parts and
    details--as both those
    pictures did--but both can
    keep them perfectly simple in
    form and outline. The idea
that a car's smooth shapes and
    simple forms must be broken
    into jagged shards to turn
    into something that looks like
a robot is false. These robots
do not have to look as
    ridiculous complicated as they
    do, and that's a fact.
    Perhaps I didn't make
    myself clear enough--I am not
    denying that these are
    detailed pictures. I am saying
    that the "bits and pieces"
look has *nothing* to do with
    detail. Obviously there is
    detail--the wearing paint on
Iron Hide is a good example.
That's great. But for all you
    say that "every piece is
    accounted for", that does
    nothing to explain why these
robots should look like such a
    mess--the question is not
    "where did those pieces go?"
    it's "where did those pieces
    come from? I don't
    doubt that these designs can
    very effectively transform
    into vehicles and have every
    piece accounted for.
http://tinyurl.com/gzegy This does the same thing
    without looking like it's been
    pounded into shards first. The
    thing about these designs is
that things are broken up into
pieces so much that they are
    largely unrecognizable. Take a
    look at Bumblebee--Where the
    hell are all the large,
    smooth, yellow plates that the
    Camaro has going for it?
    They've all been broken into
    pieces. That is *totally*
    unnecessary, and it raises
    serious design flaws. 1:
    Outlines are extremely
    important in design. If you
    can't tell what something is
    in silhouette, it's going to
be difficult to make it out in
    general, and particularly as
it moves. Look at Iron Hide,
    Blackout, and Megatron.
    Imagine their shadows. They're
    indistinct as all hell. 2:
    The reason that army fatigues,
    tigers, and zebras are all
    spotty and stripy is that
    humans and other animals see
    largely through outlines. If
you have enough shapes on a
form, it blends more and more
    into its background. That's a
    problem almost all of these
    designs have--too many shapes,
and too many lines going in
    contrasting directions. Again,
    look at Iron Hide--just what
the hell is that to the right
below his face? Is there one
on the other side? Are his
    legs, bent, or just really
    short? It's virtually
    impossible to tell. Similarly,
this is why the flame son
    Optimus (beyond being cheesy)
    are such a stupid design
    move--they're yet another form
of camouflage. Take a look at
Optimus a second. He's one of
    the simplest designs here, yet
as soon as his shoulder passes
in front of his knee, I'm not
sure where one starts and the
    other begins. Then look at
    something more complex, like
    Blackout--can you honestly
tell me you're going to be
able to keep track of all that
    in motion? Don't try
    and pin me as someone
    complaining because they don't
look like the G! ideal. I
    really don't care that much.
    But these are bad designs,
    they're messy, they're
    difficult to look at and
    identify, difficult to tell
    apart, and they don't create
    any kind of iconic or
    distinctive look for people to
take away from them. If you
    think they look cool, great
    for you. If you're impressed
by the artistry of the effects
    guys, great, I'm sure they
    worked hard. But the designs
    themselves are trying way, way
    too hard.

first of all, as ridiculous as it sounds, shia is popular with teen girls. teen know him. disturbia was actually kind of good. whatever. but gibson you said that the idea of live action was cheesy enough, AND THEN THEY CHANGED THE DESIGNS WHICH MADE IT WORSE. i completely disagree, sure the concept could be considered silly, for sure. but thanks to bays vision, its going to be more realistic and if people can buy into spiderman among other things, people will have no idea watching this movie. MEGAN FOX IS HOT AS HELL. people laugh at the posteR? honestly i dont beleive you, but whatever. and i have the complete oposite experince as far as the trailer goes, everyone who sees it seems to be pretty freaking interested. its going to be a big action movie that WILL make money for sure. only time and advertising will tell how much, but ads are good so far i think. we will talk when it opens, but im pretty freaking sure its going to do huge business, so i dont know what people you are getting such negative reactions from. only people here on AICN are bitching their asses off. everyone else can just accept the changes for the better, or whatever the fuck you complain about, and are getting ready for a movie with nice cars, big robots, and tons of action. sounds good to me

I loved the design of the lizard and enjoyed the scenes with him/her/it when on screen. Other than that, well, I think we all know the general consensus. I was there on opening day. Took a half day to catch the first showing. Everyone, and I mean, EVERYONE left quietly after the film was over. The vibe was not a one of elation, or whatever. One of the worst movies I have ever seen. Seriously.Well, I see your point. I have issue with the script/story/direction. The designs come in after that for me, but they are important, to me. I won't see this, so I will enjoy what those of you who do see it have to say about it. Good luck guys. Steer clear of the chest bumping tubbies.....

I had hopes for this film, but I thing your right. The script was terrible. I can see when they were putting this together they thought this would be a good idea. Megatron frozen and all that, but this is looking bad. The film-makers have talked about us not seeing anything like this before. I think the great thing about CGI, the only great thing, is that it takes away the ability for a film-maker to hide behind great effects.

bay is essential. from my experience, first of all people cant even tell designs from the trailers. thats not my point though. people think the concept is a joke, and it does sound ridiculous, only because they are toy cartoons, not because of the design. and why do you think the trailer was so dark and serious? to let people know its not a joke and its not just for kids and its not all about toys. bay can make it a real action movie, and not a joke. but youre right, the advertising will be tricky because many people will just see it as a joke-because the concept of a live action transformers movie is funny. but i think bay can pull it off in all kinds of kickass gloriousness. thats what im thinking, and everyone i know and have been around arent taking it as a joke, but i guess lots of people are. we will see

I understand. We simply have different viewpoints/opinion/preferences on what is art. It is what it is. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. My father is a perfect example. He shakes his head at the films I love and I shake my head at the films he loves. Very seldom can we meet half way, so to speak. I am passionate about the potentiality of the Transformers property and have enjoyed many of its iterations. I just don't like anything I have seen or read concerning TF2007. I expected much more and much more could have been done with this project. They took a myriad of the wrong liberties. Whine, whine, whine, I know. This could have been a HUGE sci-fi event (critically), and yet it will be mediocre in that aspect. Sure it has wonderful SFX and Giant Robots, but where's the story? Anyway, thanks for reading. Hope the movie delivers for/by your standards. I mean that. I am not trying to be a dick. Be well.

but every year great films are always overlooked...just the way it goes. I can honestly say that if it weren't for IFC over the years and AICN for the past year, I would have missed out on some fantastic films. Of course in the end it comes down to personal opinion and taste but WTF ever, you hear what I'm playin.

The direction was brilliant. Bay should take note. Ha! I too knew little about it. I was simply drawn by Clive Owen, Julianne Moore and Cuaron. I honestly thought the premise was a little eye-rolling inducing. I never read the book. Boy how I was wrong - and delightfully so. The battle scene did come out of proverbial left field and was so very powerful on all levels and in all facets. The car scene was particularly impressive. Gods, that movie is just too tight. The epitome of tightness. I'll buy any and all double-dips that get released. Love that film. Worthy of the Blade Runner comparison/likening. Be well, fellow Children of FUCKING Men admirer.

I hear you bro'. AICN & IFC have clued me in to some truly great films. The fact that CoM got overlooked is expected. You know this. Still sucks though. Cauron should have been celebrated for his masterpiece, and Scorsese got an Oscar for ripping off and remaking a fine film that didn't need to be remade. Why? rhetorical....Oh, and on topic, the designs still suck. Iconic? Nope.

    Who Will See This Movie...

    by pawprint

It seems to me that certain people are labouring under the misapprehension that anyone who was alive in the 80's actually gives a fuck about the TF toy commercial cartoon, and the fantastically deep and meaningful - almost Shakespearean - story and mythology that fans would have us believe exists. WRONG. Those of you who think 'EVERYONE' KNOWS they don't look like G1 TF's so will therefore not watch the film couldn't be wrongererer. This film IS NOT aimed at anal retentive G1 diehard fans; you may get the odd bone thrown your way (Prime's voice) etc, but this film isn't for you - get over it. Your average 9 - 12 year-old boy doesn't give a shit about your gay 80's-style cartoon; he'll be eating up the new live-action TF's with a spoon. He'll want to see it twice, at least, and each time he'll have to take a parent with him, thus increasing this film's take. Better get used to the idea of a sequel too... Other people wishing to see this are people like me, who also couldn't give a rat's arse about poorly animated childhood toy commercials - we just want to see the giant robots cut loose and smash the fucking place up. Christ, my friend's wife (23 years old) who wouldn't know a TF if you arse-fucked her with one is well excited to see this film. You were never going to see G1 TF's on screen in a live action film, because frankly the designs were made for a kid's cartoon on a shoestring budget, and frankly look like dog-toffee. At least these new designs look like they could convincingly tranform into vehicles, etc. The cartoon designs - much like the toys they advertised - look like they'd fucking snap to bits if they tried to transform into ANYTHING.

Maybe it had some effect on me; maybe He-Man is just super gay-ass shit and I was drawn to it. But Transformers were exactly the same as He-Man, My Little Pony or Care Bears; toy commercials dressed up as narratives. And this film is too. Grow up, get the Mattel out of your souls.

These designs look like someone built humanoid frames, attached tons of powerful magnets, threw the frames into a huge pile of scrap metal, then fished them out and called them done. by nonsensical

You two are the kind of dipshits who just don't get it. The complaint isn't that this is not a direct translation of the G1 source. The complaint is that Michael Bay had the opportunity to take and create a great story. A story where the iconic character designs were updated to be more modern and believable.

Instead the story is absolute shit. It not only disregards anything Transformers that has ever come before it, but it essentially pisses on itself in the process. As for the character designs they are atrocious. They don't update the characters or even modernize them. They disregard nearly every aspect of what made the characters and the Transformers great for all generations and replaces them with half assed designs that don't translate well on film or on print.

Toy commercial or not the film is going to be awful and you can tell that by the story, the trailers, and the designs.

We talkbackers are the audience. We want quality film making and are getting sick and tired of films that lack substance. Action or not there needs to be more than fluff in the films and Bay had the opportunity to give that to people with Transformers. Unfortunately, he chose 'splosions and trumped up clichéd action sequences over substance. For this reason people are pissed.

We want more, and we deserve better. If you think that you're getting better then you just sit back and enjoy your shit sandwich. I'm not going to ruin that for you since you seem to love the taste.

You know for all the people claiming he's destroying the franchise, let us not forget that the franchise was a freaking 30 minute toy commercial!
If they looked like they did in the cartoon it would be ridiculous. You can get away with alot in animation, but people say 'well the toys could change into thos shapes, so these should too!'
WRONG! Anyone remember the megatron toy? with the enormous gun handle legs that couldn't move?
Or maybe ratchet? he had no body or head!
I suppose you're all pissed about Prime not having a magical trailer either.
Bay is not a great director, but tell me this, how can you say 'he's ruined this film' without actually seeing it?
With those powers you could release a pre-emptive review magazine.

Your expectations are raised far too high - this isn't a film based on a complex, decade spanning, classic mythology - it's a film based on a cartoon about giant robots that turned into cars/trucks, etc, made to sell toys. It was NEVER going to have the level of substance and deeply moving plot/story that you and so many other seem to be trying to imbue it with. It's a summer action blockbuster designed to impress with spectacle and to rake in shitloads of cash. In that respect, it will succeed in every aspect I think.

Spidey five is great... I was a little sckeptical when they brought back Norman Osborn and revealed him to be behind the Sinister Six, especially given how incomplete the third film was with just two villians, but this time I felt that Raimi learned from past mistakes and created something fantastic. Hiring Rhino, Scorpion, Hobgoblin, Kraven and Sandman was fantastic and when the Lizard completed the six it was just amazing. Sure, it was kind of a cop out when Kraven and the Lizard ended up helping Spidey in the end, but it was a great reveal with Osborn coming back. I can't wait for the final installment to in 2018.

In case you can't tell, I'm kidding.

As for the issue with the characters looking ridiculous if they looked like they did in the cartoons, well there you are wrong. Look at the later incarnations of the toys, especially the Masterpiece line and you'll see that detail and and poseability is fantastic and would easily work on film and be recognizable by fans and non fans alike.

...How the holy fuck can you say anything about this movie until you’ve seen the fucking thing!?? Yes you’ve read the script, you know who acts in it and heck we now have high resolution photos of the robots and best of all we all know who’s directing it, but there’s still one fucking problem… YOU HAVENT SEEN THE FUCKING MOVIE YET, no one has and the thing has probably changed quite a bit from the script. As for the “we talk backers are the audience” I call bullshit, any director who goes and tries to make a movie to satisfy wanknerds like you lot will fail hopelessly simply because there are varying degrees of madness..sorry, nerdness to you lot and some of you want updated G1 designs and some of you don’t, some of you want megatron to be a gun some of you don’t… collectively you’d drive any director mad with your whiney nerdy reasoning why it should be this or that, so M bay is making this movie for normal people not cunts who live in comicbook shops. As for disregarding what made these characters/cartoons iconic (only in your head mate), lets be fucking honest here, they weren’t all that, sure I loved them when I was a kid, had loads of em, had the cartoons, comics etc etc and they were great when I was a kid but now as an adult this whole fucking pedestal you and your “adult” mates have placed them on is fucking ludicrous, they were a bunch of fucking robots designed to sell toys to kids. So what he’s not making a fucking oscar movie, he’s making an independence day, a movie which by all counts sucks but I absolutely love simply because its big dumb fun and you know what IT MADE A FUCKING FORTUNE!! Which is exactly what Bay’s movie will do because he’s not making it for the fanatics, he’s making it for the general public, joe’s like me who like big stupid popcorn movies. If you want more and think you deserve better, sit on yer arse come opening night and rewatch your precious Transformers cartoon movie while the rest of the world i.e. the fucking normal people, go out and enjoy some robot mayhem the likes of which we have never seen before because we love the taste of it, but you know what, I bet you your fucking granny you will be there opening night secretly enjoying it like the bunch of hypocritical cunt’s you are.

My expectations are too high and you still don't get it. I, and many others, expected that this film would be about the Transformer characters and the war they fought. I expected that this film would be given the same treatment that films like Spiderman have been given in that it would contain great action and a deep story.

It wasn't that this film was never going to have this, it's that once Bay came along that idea quickly began to evaporate. The film that could have been great has been turned into nothing more than fluff.

If that's what you want then you are getting it. That doesn't make you a bad person, it just makes you someone without standards and expectations for a quality film based on this concept. That is what you don't get. We wanted qualilty story based on the source and that's just not happening.

Bay missed the mark. Defend him all you want, but you're an idiot. Toys or not the level of detail in the masterpiece line is fantastic. Given these toys or some of the highly detailed comic illustrations as a basis the designs could have had as much detail and maintained a highly recognizable look to them.

The shit squeezed out of Bay's ass doesn't look believeable at all and in case you haven't been reading a lot of folks here are saying that this shit doesn't look cool and real, it looks like a complete mess.

You could be right - maybe I'm NOT getting it; "I, and many others, expected that this film would be about the Transformer characters and the war they fought." - I'm not a fan, but let me just do some research here... Hmmm.. Transformer characters; Bay's TF's seem to be led by a TF called Optimus Prime, and include Jazz, Bumblebee, etc - Bay's Decepticons seem to be led by a TF called Megatron, and include Starscream and others. The war they fought; Hmmmmmmmm... Bay's tagline seems to be "Their War. Our World", and I do remember seeing clips in the trailers of TF's fighting in what APPEARS to be a war.... Am I missing the point again, or are we just going to complain some more about the lack of Bergmanesque depth and the fact that the TF's now look like convincing robots and not blocky toys?

Look it up. His basic colors have stayed the same and his basic look has stayed the same through every single incarnation. He has died in the series twice and he came back looking the exact same both times.

The only exception is Beast Wars II, not the US Beast Wars since Optimus Primal is a completely different character, but Beast Wars II where his spark was placed into a Maximal protoform and he took on the form of a lion. However, in robot mode he still looked the same and he was still Red and Blue.

I could go into far greater detail as my prior work experiences with Hasbro were for this very purpose, but I won't.

As for the stories, several of them were based on some of the great classics in literature. There were also many stories that were very dynamic and morally driven in a way that was meant to educated and show great character compassion and interaction. That's not to say that they deserve to be considered modern classics, but for these reasons they were way more than the simple fluff Bay is squirting out with this film.

If you still want me to list the incarnations of Prime I can easily do it.

As for folks on these TB’s saying the robots don’t look cool etc, what you want me to the take the word of crazy ass fanatics like yourself and your equally lunatic mates over my own personal opinion? I think if you showed the kids of today who this movie is marketed towards, and remember you’re a fuck adult now… allegedly, I think the kids would piss there pants at those masterline designs in comparison to the new designs. Now I wil give you, some of them do look a mess, to much going on but then again I’ll judge that shit when I see it on the screen not like the fuckers on here who pretty much remind me of the salem witch hunters, i.e. burn the fucker before we even know for sure. Despite the misleading tagline "Their War. Our World." This film isn't about the war between Autobots and Decepticons that spills onto the earth. It is about the hunt for the energon cube. The "source of all Cybertronian life". It is about Sam getting his first car so he can get laid. Even if they fight, it's not about their war.

If it were then it would be more about the Decepticons lust for power as they head to earth to drain it of energy. While the Autobots fundamental drive to protect all life from the Decepticon's tyranny. Which it is not.

No need to list them, but what do you mean by 'basic colours' and 'basic look'? Also, when you say 'based on great classics in literature', do you have examples? In this instance, I suspect that 'based on' means 'ripped off and hugely simplified'. Would you place ANY TF's cartoon or comic in the same league as 'The Dark Knight Returns', or 'Watchmen', for depth of story and impact? Or would you aim higher and compare TF's to Dickens, Tolkien or The Illiad?

    Clarification...

    by nonsensical

By basic colors I mean that his chest area is red and arms are red. His head and legs are blue and there is metalic trim accenting the body. As for basic look. In general every incarnation has been a semi truck of some sort with the exception of the TF2000 Firetruck in which the armor changed the look.

As for the examples, I would have to look through what I have to compare it accurately. As you said in this particular instance the story is sampled and simplified, but not overly so.

As far as comparing the TF stories to the Dark Knight Returns or Watchmen. Some of the Dreamwave stories such as the Stormbringer were close. Even some of the UK Marvel stories were very good, but I wouldn't really compare these to Dickens and the like.

In fact simply comparing them to the DKR and Watchmen is sort of like comparing Monsters Inc. to Pulp Fiction. Both are great stories, but they are geared to a vastly different demographic.

As for my info. I'm close to 30 and I have in fact done some stop motion, though with clay/resin not toys. Some of the commercial work is usually found in TV spots or shorts. I've worked in Animation for the last decade and have a BS in computer animation as well as a BFA and MFA in Animation. The four short films I'm currently working on are mostly for festevals as I've decided to take a break from the rat race. Though one of them is really a TV pilot that might be turned into a series or a feature. That's what pilots are for.

As for the name calling... well you started it and many people on this site just don't pay attention unless you resort to that sort of nonsense. So I'm happy to oblige.

Glad you told me you were kidding *phew*

And the difference between Spiderman and TF is simple, Spiderman as a story arc and a concept appeals to people of all ages in it's original medium, the comic.
I feel pity for anyone in their twenties, watching old TF cartoons in their basement. It's for children, the whole thing. The cartoon was for kids, the toys, for kids, (though by the sounds of it you've got some use out of them more recently) and so by association, the movie is for kids.
They don't want deep meaningful robot dialogue, they want huge ass stompy robots and lot's of 'slposions.
Why aren't you complaining that Mary Kate and Ashley movies lack substance? same age bracket.

I get what you are saying Mark, but this film is PG-13. Not G or PG like the Mary Kate and Ashley movies. That generally implies that there is a demographic being targeted that is 13 and older. However, as I've said with films like Cars and Monsters Inc. Even though they are geared towards children the stories are designed to entertain all levels. Just like Spiderman.

Transformers could have had that same appeal. Especially given that there is an audience of children who are now adults, but that was ignored here in regards to the story. Stompy or not, we should be getting more than that, but it just won't happen.

firstly whoever said that anyone in their 20s watching transformers is lame because its ONLY for kids, u must be gay...im 36 and i still watch the old transformers cartoons and have watched every incarnation they put out, minus beast wars and machines, which i thought were abominations, and unwatchable...anyhow transformers is not just for kids no more than harry potter is just for kids or spongebob or south park....and whoever had the whole "when bay took over, the great story went out the window" or something like that....no one seems to understand the term or title"director"....if u dont like the story, blame orci and the other guy..if u dont like the designs blame the artists and blame hasbro for signing off on them...bay can film it the way he wants but i doubt he rewrote the movie to suit him and i doubt there were better designs that bay redesigned too....bottom line is that this is transformers, just not what YOU wanted...and seriously, the old designs would have looked like ILM power rangers and not what we as "adults" want....alot of u whiners and complainers didnt even grow up with the originals, u simply caught them on repeats..i can say i watched original broadcast eps...the movie will be awesome, but like many of u, u should actually SEE a movie before u decide u dont like it...reading leaked scripts on the net is retarded, that script thats been floating around is months old and bay even said himself that the final script hasnt leaked.....why cant u all be patient ? then again alot of u bashed spider man 3 into the ground in the other talkback while u raise it on a pedastal in this one...hippocrits i tell ya

i always thought that ur supposed to "fuck" a "cunt" LOL...i love how people are suddenly so skilled in what makes a movie good or bad, or to critique the dialogue and story in a movie and how so many aspiring writers and such are making their own movies that will be better than this one.....or claim they can do better CG work than ILM (i always laugh at that one) bottom line it is just a movie, and a movie based on a cartoon whose main purpose is to sell toys....im 36 yrs old and i get that, im still excited like a 5 yr old to go see this movie, but i understand the business....but im not gonna say "optimus prime inspired me and was a major influence in my life" like some of these people have said...another thing i laugh at actually.....no matter what anyone says in here, they will all be online and see the movie and be back here to sing its praises july 5...or maybe they will download it or get it on bootleg like geeky nerds do when they wanna save face after flaming a movie for a year and then sit in their basements, turn of the porn , and then watch the movie 5 times in a row while massaging their manhood thru their optimus prime tighty whities while maneuvering oh so gently up and down the megatron buttplug.....cant u see it ??? yuck

I'm not sure you understand how this process works. It's true that in this case the script existed by the time Bay came on to the project, but a script and a shooting script can be totally different--and even what's shot can be altered considerably in the editing room. Further, in terms of design, it's not as though a director says to a design team "hey, go nuts, we'll just build whatever you draw". They'll bring him many, many design ideas and he'll review them, pick which he likes, and give feedback. When it comes down to it, the buck stops with the director--though in a movie like this I admit you can't overlook interference from producers...

The buck stops with the director. Yes, he was given a script to direct--but a script and a shooting script can be very different, and then of course, how it all ends up in the editing room. Though I admit, apparently Spielberg was the one who initially wanted to focus on the "boy and his car" aspect, which just goes to show you can't overlook the idiocy of the producers, either. In terms of designs, though, it's not as though Bay said "design me some transformers" and they brought back designs for him to rubber-stamp. They'll draw dozens or hundreds of concept pictures for each character, and he'll tell them which he likes and give other comments. The blame for the designs rests with him, no one else.

I just wanted to thank him for his work, but he immediately thought I wanted a sketch. People treat these artists at conventions with little respect. Draw me something! Really? You already buy their books. Terry Moore was taken aback when we met him. I just wanted to shake his hand, say thank you and buy a travel mug. He asked, "don't you want a sketch like everyone else?" My wife said "nope, we just love your work and wanted to say thank you." Cool guy. Just saying.

I'm not here to POST messages, I'm here to READ messages. I just recently made the last post because I noticed that you are getting way out of hand with the "bold" stuff and it needs to stop. Now. A lot of people like to come to this TB section to read and discuss TF's, not read or filter out crap posts about "bolding" words. Like I said, if it continues, I hope you get banned or I hope an admin reads this concern and fixes the loophole. Yes I actually went off and did some research. Optimus Prime has had more incarnations than I could be arsed to count - run his name through Wikipedia. He has had many drastically different appearences and has been completely silver, all black, mostly blue and many variations thereof up to - and including - the Bay version. Know what? I actually believe the Bay version is the better looking out of all the pictures of Prime shown on Wikipedia - most of the cartoon/spin-off/alt universe models are PROPER dogshit.

Again, though, this isn't about comparison to the old designs--a live-action, big-budget Optimus Prime had damn well *better* look better than a toy, y'know? But the main advantage it has is a kind of look of agility to it, but that's really undermined by the "bits and pieces" look, my problems with whcih I detailed above.

and talk about the others. While I am beginning to see some resemblance of the older iconic designs only in the heads/faces of Jazz and Iron Hide I still detest the bodies. I had to look hard for the resemblance, but I finally convinced myself I saw it. The deceptacons as a whole and individually look atrocious. What is cool about them? Too busy to look threatening. Where is the arm cannon on MINO? Prime somewhat resembles Prime, but MINO? Ugh. Jet, Tank, Gun, whatever. The arm cannon was and is essential to the coolness of the character (my opinion as well as a few others). I'm talking myself into a hole. A script with developed characters needs to exist first.....

My issue is the exact opposite to yours, clearly - I have a hard time imagining the stiff and boxy-looking G1 TF's being able to realistically transform into ANYTHING. I actually think the 'busy-ness' of the Bay designs works in principle; all the many parts of a Peterbilt cab have got to go SOMEWHERE when Prime transforms, so I'd cry 'foul', if the robots were smooth, clean and boxy. As long as the robots are distinct enough in personality, there shouldn't be a problem.

I absolutely agree many of those parts should be visible, but one of my major problems is that it seems that the broad, flat shapes of many of the characters have been pointlessly broken up, or that pieces that integrated before have been pulled apart seemingly without a point. The worst cases are, of course, Iron Hide and Blackout, but even Bumblebee (who I think is actually one of the better designs) suffers. I mean, it's more or elss impossible to discern what any of them turn into based on their current appearance, and their limbs are such twisted wrecks of metal that they blend into one another and defy your eyes' attempts to impose perspective on them. Unless Bay plans on making this a storypoint (i.e. these robots are built for disguise, so obviously they're going to be hard to discern due to natural camouflage...) it seems like a poor design choice to have your huge, complicated special effects monsters difficult to actually see clearly.

Megatron's another who's a mess. And Megatron, of all of them, benefited from looking very slick and blocky. Why? Because he was a fuggin' *gun*. He should look like a humanoid cannon, and he did, and that's pretty scary, 'cause when it comes down to it guns are terrifying things, a symbol of man's capacity to take rough metal and forge it into sleek, simple object that's also one of the deadliest things on the planet. This Megatron loses that entirely, instead looking rather like a junk-monster. Which can be scary, certainly, but it's certainly not Megatron, and I still think the design is too messy to be really effective.

Yes, it's a toy that has had liberties taken with it for dynamic effect/posing. But if the appropriate "realizations" were taken with it, updates, whatnot, do you still think the Megs the movie is getting works better than what I linked? Just curious. I feel this is clean (boxy to you) whereas ILM's Megatron is just not smooth/streamlined at all. The intricacies overpower the general asthetic for me. Not trying to start shit or bait/trap.

Granted, that's not TOO bad - I could see how that model could TF into a large-size handgun, and he looks more realistically agile - however, still too blocky and 'Power Rangers' zord-like for me. In the proper hands, that design could have been streamlined and toned down in some instances, punched up in other instances and ultimately made to work on film - made to look realistic. Just blathering on about robots. It's sci-fi. I'll look out for your thoughts once the movie hits. Be well.

Honestly, I have never seen an episode and know nothing about them. So comparisons are lost on me. I once posted how I would have loved to have seen the Constructacons/Devistator in this film and someone immediately cried foul as it would instantaneously remind many of the Power Rangers. Whatever. Because of one word, Spielberg. Spielberg could bring exactly what makes his films so great and what ALL Bay's films have been lacking. Bay's films have good action but are mostly soul-less, but this is not a Jerry Bruckheimer production, this is Steven Spielberg presents Transformers directed by Michael Bay. What I'm hoping is that Spielberg's involvement could add the necessary heart that this film needs.

    by el mamerro

Actually, I think many of the storyline aspects currently in the script that people are up in arms about are due to Spielberg. If it was all up to Bay it'd be 200 times louder and more retarded. The whole boy and his first car bit is total Spielberg schmaltz... which made me cringe at first, the same way Spielberg schmaltz makes me cringe these days, but honestly, when I was a kid I was all about that shit. I just ate it up. So, to properly enjoy this movie's storyline, I'm setting my brain back 20 years so I look at it like a little kid again. I'll cheer for the kid getting the girl at the end, and the soldier finally meeting his newborn baby. Whatever, I'm not sweating it, I used to eat all that crap up when I was a little kid and I don't see why I can't do it again.

As for the script itself, I didn't mind the basic story at all. Different, but basic and easy to understand for a general audience. The dialogue, however, was atrocious, but I think a lot of it was due to John Rogers, the writer of the leaked Prime Directive script. I'm sure it's been worked over heavily, and that little Ellen clip, while still Bay-cheesy, was definitely much more refined than the respective scene in the script.

    As for the robot designs...

    by el mamerro

I think they're fucking amazing. I think people bring valid concerns about them being hard to "read", or not being distinctive enough from each other, but A) We're looking at some very unrealistically lit still images. There's no big shadows being cast and pretty much every corner grabs a highlight regardless of what side it's on. Of course it's gonna look ultra messy. B) In still images, you can't see big chunks moving in relation to each other and there's no motion blur whatsoever. Put that Ironhide design in motion and it will be easy to see what parts belong to the thigh/calf/abdomen based on the movement alone. Bonecrusher is one of the nuttiest "hard-to-read" designs, yet people were able to tell he was skating on the street based on a fraction of a second of body movement. You wouldn't be able to tell that unless you could see what thighs were, what calves were, or even the shoulder tips. These things will read just fine.

And to tell you the truth I think the outlines are perfectly distinguishable from one another. I don't know if any of you guys tried it out, but there's a Lunchables site that shows all the robot outlines, and you can easily tell which is which. As a matter of fact, the object of the game is PRECISELY to match parts of the robots to their outlines, and it's super easy. You grab a part, and you immediately know if its an arm or a leg, and who it belongs to. And it's a site for kids, so, if they can do it, I don't understand why some people are having problems with the outlines and shapes of these robots.

Bay isn't making this film for die-hard Gen-1 PUSSY ON OPTIMUS fans who know which transformers have a landing strip and which ones wax that shit. He's making this movie for the casual summer PUSSYBUSTER moviegoer, the one who'll see the trailer and say to his friend "Holy shit, did you see that less blocky and more realistic PUSSY ON OPTIMUS? Clearly that was rendered for more than 30 hours by ILM, and is by far their best work to date."

    Spielberg schmaltz I can handle

    by zooch

It gives the film balance, so it's not just all explosions, it gives the film heart. Some would consider E.T. schmaltz-y, but it's great. Which is I like the angle of the boy and his car, it reminds me of Iron Giant, which is similar to E.T. I remember the TF cartoon having a human kid character too.

The schmaltz factor isn't as bad as

    by finky089

the "we wanna be hip" way in which it's handled in TF (at least in the script I read). Spielberg wasn't trying to be 'hip' to teens in ET (I still think that film works well today), nor was it in Iron Giant. Yeah, there was a kid named Spiek in the TF cartoons, but he wasn't lusting after a girl, nor was his "story" about him getting his first car.

Yeah, there was a kid in the cartoon, but he wasn't the star. A transformers movie shouldn't need some teenage putz trying to get a girl to "have heart". The transformers themselves should be likable and well-defined enough to carry the emotional weight of the film. You may recall, ET and the Iron Giant were so successful because those non-human characters were so lovable. The non-human characters here should be the stars.

    Right...

    by el mamerro

I was referring to the the basic storyline elements. A kid going after a girl and getting his first car isn't "hip", on the contrary, I think it's old fashioned. The "trying to be hip" thing comes out of dialogue, which I agree, sucked major balls on that script. I'm sure there'll still be some of it left after the rewrites, but Bay seems to handle it a bit better, than say, Raimi (cue little kids in SM3 saying "AWESOME!!! WICKED COOL!!!"). That clip of the Duhamel character was one of the worst scenes in the script, yet when I see how it's pulled off in the movie, it doesn't come out half as terrible.Spielberg wasn't trying to be hip to teens in E.T., but he was definitely angling for elementary school hip.

And the heart of ET and the Iron Giant was in how the non-human centerpiece related to the main human character (Elliot and Hogarth respectively). Following that reasoning, the heart of Transformers would have to be Sam and Bumblebees relationship if you'd like the film to have that feel. Looks like it'll be a central point, but not the only one, which I'm glad about.

I'm sure it's understood that the Transformer characters must be likeable, and I'm sure they will be. But I'm sorry to say it but I'm not so sure if all-CGI characters would work as the stars of a live-action film, it might has well have been an animated film, which would be less real.

I didn't say I did want that feel, I was using the examples that zooch brought up to show that non-human can have plenty of emotional weight. If you'd like to see non-humans with emotional weight with no human relationship, see C3P0 and R2D2 together, Finding Nemo, Toy Story, pretty much every other Pixar movie, March of the Penguins, and, hell, pretty much any other animal movie. You don't need a face to make a great, memorable character, as Darth Vader and V prove.

Is how Michael Bay keeps saying he wants to make this believable. But, really, there's going to be nothing believable about it due to the screwball script & casting choices they went with. The only question is, which movie will the public find to be a larger disappointment: Spiderman 3 or Transformers? Both look to me to be roughly on par with or just barely below War of the Worlds when they could and SHOULD be SOOOO much better than that. They're mockeries to the films they're capable of being.

There are plenty of CGI movies out there, and plenty of movies where actors pretty much greenscreen everything while working with CGI bit-characters. It can be done, and it can be done more easily with Transformers than most other types of characters. There's no reason in the world it shouldn't work. They shelled out millions to see Ewan McGregor act with CGI aliens in Star Wars 2, and this would blow that away without a problem.

As was pointed out, *if* done right. But Michael Bay giving it the "human" touch? I don't think so. And, for my money, the "human" touch works best when they don't dick around trying to pretend that that human is the main character--see Hellboy. If Spike in this flick were about as much the star as the guy in that, I'd have no problem. If Sam/Spike and Bumblebee were a true team, with Bumblebee being more like Hotrod was in the animated film, I could even see that--but as it is, Bumblebee is frickin' *mute*. What the hell is that? And I'm not saying there should be no humans in the movie--but this is a flick geared towards teenage males, do teenage males really need the "human connection"? Do they really need the sweet little coming of age arc? Nah, come on. Look at the reaction to Spider-Man 3: People bitched shamelessly about how much Parker was out of his mask, how much melodrama there was, etc. etc. We live in an age where people can latch onto a movie starring a clown fish and go back so many times the damn thing makes 400 million dollars. I can't believe Transformers wouldn't be able to do the same. Hell, look at the ninja turtle movies! The first TMNT starred four guys in green suits with animatronic faces, and it made 135 million dollars in 1990 dollars--that's $210 million today. From a no-name director, no less. You're telling me Michael Bay wouldn't make money with giant robot CGI characters? Seems unlikely...

Btw zooch im sure u remember even the cartoons had characters like Spike Witwicky who provided the human balance to the robot mayhem. i think the big worry alot of talkbackers and general fans is that the film is going to be focused on the human characters and with occasional smatterings of robot on robot ultra violence, the same thing which happened in War Of The worlds, sure the martians were there but the vast majority of the film revolved around Cruise and his human issues with his family as opposed to seeing giant alien tripods knocking buildings down and vaporising people. At the end of the day every film needs a 'sensitive side' to its story, however for this film in particular what we need is huge quantities of robot on robot and robot on army ultra violence with a gentle human caress as opposed to a human touch. War of worlds received a human fisting and as a consequence the primary subject material i.e the aliens ended up as more of sideshow than the main event.

It is essential for a filmmaker to know his target demographic. If Transformers is not for the fans, as you seem ever so eager to prove, why the bloody hell is it called Transformers? Why preserve the names and alt-modes of characters children of the 80s grew up with, if not to capture the attention of this audience? I freely admit that the original animated series is cheesy, but let's not pretend it's unusual for people to feel nostalgic about the characters that populate their childhood memories. Transformers, like most cult series and films, for the most part owes its status to the imaginations of its fans. One could produce the most slipshod mythology in the world, but if it spoke to enough people, as Transformers has, it could go mainstream in a snap. Just look at Star Wars. Even its stars were convinced it was trash until ANH was released and the nation united in a simultaneous geekgasm it still hasn't recovered from. The popularity of Transformers and Star Wars share a common catalyst, and it certainly isn't these respective series' literary or qualitative excellence: there's just something about them, something about the way they employ timeless narrative themes or character archetypes, or perhaps even some spark of--dare I say it--originality. Whatever it is, it took root in some small corner of many viewers' minds and never stopped growing. I hope you're not conceited enough to believe (as you implied) that your personal taste is the definitive standard of quality by which all else should be evaluated. You must realize that your distaste for the G1 character designs holds no sway over those tens of millions of people who can identify Optimus Prime on sight, whether or not they've ever seen an episode of the show. The merits of said show could be debated all night long, but the time would be wasted because, justified or not, certain Transformers are and will remain pop culture icons--the crucial qualifier being, only as they appear in the _classic series._ To monkey with an entire generation of filmgoers by slapping a well-known brand name onto a movie that bears only perfunctory relevance (if not any resemblance) to its inspiration is, tersely stated, a very bad idea. This grave miscalculation has already incited mass reactions of confusion, derision and worse, as multiple talkbackers have attested in this session alone. If Michael Bay had such a chubby to make a giant robots movie, the least he could have done was dispense with the disingenuous bullshit. As things are, though, the potentially significant advantages Bay's Transformers may have enjoyed by sticking close to its source material have been squandered by said director's reckless ambition and almost comical misalignment with the ideals of his core audience. The original series' staples have been unceremoniously discarded, succeeded not by elements inspired or innovative, but a contrived "vision" that largely consists of exploitative pap. Regardless, the possibility exists that the film will go on to be financial success. But whatever becomes of it, you can bet your ass it won't come close to meeting its potential, and that's precisely because that core audience I keep referring to has already been alienated. My personal stake in this issue is thin at best. I was a very involved TF fan for around a decade, until my enthusiasm for the franchise waned with the aftermath of the messy abortion some call Beast Machines. When Bay's Transformers was announced my interest was mildly piqued, then it slipped from my attention until a couple of months ago, when I came across a picture of the new Prime. I was...more than a little dismayed by that unholy mess. The latest high res shots only compound my concern. I'll see the film on the big screen, and I fully expect to be entertained, but as I said in my original message, Transformers it is not. What means to the general public will be illuminated by the ticket sales shortly.

harryknowlessoldout - I hear that. nonsensical - That alt mode thing was an oversight on my part. Believe it or not, I was aware that most of them were changed. I just had Prime on the brain as I was typing, and of course, as you mentioned, he's still a truck, so.... Anyway, I think my point comes out relatively unscathed: When it was so obvious that the fans would feel shafted, why, in the name of robo-gina diddling Christ, couldn't Bay have just excised any and all Transformers references from his robotic-monsters-from-space movie? He could've called it Twisted Metal, just to piss off all the fans of that series. Har. I mean, for the sake of argument, if I were to accept that the film isn't even partially intended for established fans, it's still reasonable to assume that no one in their right mind would flip the finger to that many people, that many potential customers, on purpose, right? ...Right?

    by jack_crap

Yes, I'm an old and crusty fan of the original cartoon who was excited for a second after looking at the Optimus Prime pic because it brought back memories of the cartoon, but then was horrified as I looked at Starscream, Megatron, Frenzy and the rest. Although, yeah, I'll admit, Jazz does look cool. Since there is nothing faithful to the original Transformers, I guess I can hope for a typical Michael Bay action fluff piece and just hope that this one is a little closer to the Rock instead of Bad Boys, The Island, Pearl Harbor and the rest of his disappointing flix.

particularly lackluster already? Already we have a not terrible but mediocre Spiderman 3, and from what I'm reading about Pirates and Shrek 3, it doesn't look any better. The two flicks I'm left to look forward to are Matt Damon's third Jason Bourne movie and the Daniel Pearl movie, A Mighty Heart.

    transforming machine theory

    by branded

To put things simply, Transformers are dated designs. Today, people's general knowledge of technology has improved since, and kids these days are able to see that you can't hide a robot head by flipping it under the hood held together with a couple of screws. Transforming technology needs to be advanced to the point where lots of smaller moving parts rearrange themselves internally to form a new part. For example, the car engine can't be a standalone system, but part of a fluid series of smaller technologies rearranged in a certain state to create propulsion. When transforming to a robot, the so-called "engine" is split and parts of it merges with the so-called "hydraulics" to become a weapon, for example. Mr. Bay and his writers *could* introduce a micronization theory to justify these complex designs. The idea is that the evolution of technology is going in the direction of controlling and altering smaller and smaller objects to produce more powerful effects. Nanotech is only the beginning of this possibility. If we can control and alter at an atomic or sub-atomic level, then we become gods, capable of rearranging the basic fabric of our existence. The Transformers represent the first major step of evolution and the conflicts that has risen from it. But I don't think Mr. Bay is capable of going this deep... On another note, the best robot footage so far has been Armored Core 4. I strongly recommend Mr. Bay take a look at it.

Transformers will have to be redone in ten years or maybe even done with a splinter film series called Generation 1, but it will be a while since this one will be so bad.

That said, I am with you, that movie looks like fucking garbage. Michael Bay to me symbolizes all the worst things about modern movies and the world, and ARMAGEDDON is so bad it left scars on cinema history that might never heal. I thought that guy had the worst editing and camera placement anybody had ever come up with, but with TRANSFORMABLES he might be taking it to a new level: I can't even tell what's going on in the fucking still photos! Is that a head, is that legs, I don't know it just looks like ten thousand computer simulated car parts having a huge orgy.-Vern

Furthermore, our reaction to BSB's rather innocuous stumble into bold text was innocent, as were our equally innocent reaction to puzzle it out and make use of it. No one was getting harmed and yet you feel the need to harrass those that participated, myself included. Hell, if you're a regular, which I sincerely doubt, you'd know that ZB, BSB, and myself are regs who have participated on these threads countless, countless times and with no malice intended. Get off you high horse, kid, and lighten up a bit. If you think this thread is bad/broken (which it isn't--yet) then you probably haven't been here for more than a month or two. I've seen threads that were thousands of posts long and completely off topic. Oscar night anyone? A few dozen posts on the accidental discovery of bold text is hardly even a comparison. In fact, I've seen more posts on how to use page breaks than bold text. What I'm trying to say, Box, is: ........................grow up, stop being a grumpy bastard, and let the kiddies have their fun.

You may be on to something--the reason most of the staffers dislike TF is because they arent young enough to have been enthralled by the franchise when it came out. True, there are fans who are in their late thirties/early forties (myself included), but it seems the best fans are in the late teens to early thirties bracket, doesn't it? ........................Still, young or old, only an absolute moron could possibly think the designs as anything other than OVERLY-designed. BAY'S MISTAKES ARE GREATER

    by bruticus

As I said in the spidey thread... Yes Raimi admitted to not "getting" Venom" but atleast he got the OTHER characters right. Unlike Bay At least Raimi gets all the other characters and gives them the respect they deserve.

Bay didn't want to do Transformers, cause it was about toys, he didn't want to do a toy movie. He's admitted that. Just as Raimi has admitted he doesn't ike the venom character and why Venom wasn't half as cool as the other incarnations i've seen of him. I'm no spider-man fan, I like the movies but i've always thought Venom was the coolest thing about Spider-Man. Raimi may not agree but he couldn't deny the fans and had to put him in somehow. Even if he wasn't going to commit to it. Just as Bay has went and made a Transformers movie even though he never bothered to try seeing just what it was that the fans love about these characters.

My call out to directors would be for them to start hiring more consultants. Pull your heads out of your asses and if you're doing a movie where you don't quite feel the excitement that a fan does. MAKE YOURSELF FEEL IT. Figure it out. Talk to the fans. MAKE IT PART OF YOUR JOB. To bring to the screen the expectations of what anyone who is seeing a Transformers movie or a movie with Venom in it are expecting.

........................ Bay you really could have had something cool here but you let your ego get in the way. THAT IS YOUR FAULT. You messed up. The boxy, rigid (STURDY) designs would have left a lot of people happier and you'd actually have people rooting for you here! Instead you threw the baby out with the bathwater.

    Transformers?!?!

    by violator90

I printed out the pictures these designs and showed some co-workers who are somewhat of TF fans. Not one could tell which robot was which. Hell, at one point I got confused as to which one was Jazz, Ironhide and Blackout. These TF look nothing like "robots in disguise" they look more like something out of Star Wars prequels.

Some one nailed it on the head: what is General Grievous doing in the Transformers movie. That is what ALL of them look like; different designs of Grievous and nothing more.

First Spidey is shitted on and now Transformers?! If Bay didn't want to do this movie why give it to him anyways?!?! I bet there are many directors in Hollywood that DO know about Transformers; both the show and the comic and would have done a 100% better job that what we are actually going to get! Hollywood better start doing things right and LISTEN to the fans and to those that know the materal and want to do it right. This is going to suck more that suits on their knees.

They all work and are not even remotely as ornate as these TINO abominations. WETA seems to be on the right track with their EVA designs (if that project ever comes to fruition). Anyone see Gunhed? Even that crapfest did it right. Whoever you choose to blame, they failed with these. Yes, ridiculously "detailed" and technical. No, they don't look cool. There was a happy medium to meet half way. They could have retained the iconic designs whilst updating them and making them "work". Whatever. ........................ Bring on the REBOOT!

TINO, MINO, GINOTransformers In Name OnlyMegatron In Name OnlyGodzilla In Name OnlyIt's what Camp Hate refers to Bay's film. Pisses some Bay/Murphy apologists off since all they want is Big Fuckin Robots Blowing Shit Up accompanied by Big Box Office (irrelevant). You know, a fun popcorn flick. How dare we ask for a decent story, well crafted characters and a little topical allegory. It is a movie based on a toyline after all. Wonder why the franchise has lasted for over two decades? It isn't solely due to the cartoon/commercial which I never thought was that great. That just got shit started......

for months. Weta is great at bring things to life "Except for a few scenes in King Kong". WETA would do a awesome job at animating "Blocky" designs.

I know you've been saying it. Curious - What did they fail at in King Kong? You threw in some quotes there so maybe you don't believe they did? Perhaps others had complaints. Please, sir, elaborate.

I think you are the only person to ever notice the (very)slight sexual reference. Most people assume, and correctly, that Im implying that my name is moondoggy to you. The sexual reference sorta occurred to me AFTER I used the name in other sites. Funny enough, my wife got it right off the bat, too. Wanna know why I use moondoggy? My wife looks very much like Sally Fields. Also, I like to surf the net. And I like the sexual reference. All in all, a good name, I must say. ........................Thanks for noticing and getting the slight reference.

    TF designs

    by huggerorange

Screw the early designs, how could they even use them for a movie like this, itd be way too cheesy. The G1 designs were awesome in the cartoon and toy form for the most part, you cant deny that. But, I just dont see the harm in trying to update the look of the robots. Everyone just needs to wait until the movie comes out and then make judgements. If you go to wikipedia and type in the search "Transformers film" youll find are all kinds of details there and plotpoints.. eventhough Im sure a ton of people have already done this.

They wouldn't make simple geometric designs, but I highly doubt they'd make designs like the ones presented here--i.e. pointlessly busy and ugly as sin.

    Why The Hate?????

    by freemind

Why does everyone seem to hate Bay?? Yeah, I know he's never gonna win an oscar, but his movies are fun. Bad boys 1 and 2 were great, Armegeddon was great and i'm sure transformers will be great. I don't know about you but i go to the movies to be entertained and every movie can't be "pan's labirinth". Even great directors make shitty movies (take the puke-filled-crap fest that was deathproof) so give bay a chance and i know damn well that no matter how much you hate the pics, the director, prime's lips, shia or anything elses about the movie, you all will be there on opening night and will hepl this movie make the $100+ million it's first opening weekend, and don't try to deny it, the fact that you're here, on the talk back, proves it.

    They all look the same...

    by prof ikamono

... like something out of Tetsuo... Bad, bad idea... the Original Transformers were designed for immeadiate and easy recognition. Kids could tell who the good guy Autobots and bad guy Decepticons were just by looking. I had to put my cursor on the pics and wait for the label to pop-up before I knew who Ironhide and Jazz were, and if they were Autobots or not. And why do these Hollywood fucktards hate bright primary colours so much? Do they think look "teh ghey" or some assholistic nonsense? Superman Returns dulled down the colours and was still called "gay". If all the Transformers are metal-coloured it's boring to look at them. Are all cars and planes done in shades of gunmetal gray? It hurts your eyes to look at all these sharp angles... this movie will be unpleasant to watch. I think I'll simply watch the cartoons instead.

Why do so many people hate Bay's TF movie?

    by violator90

First, Bay designed transformers that only HE and Spielberg would recognize. Didn't Spielberg say he was a big fan of the TF, and yet everything about this movie seems to indicate that Spielberg actually knows shit about them.

Second, Bay never wanted to do this movie but he did it anyways but he pissed on all the previous source material that have made TF so beloved. Granted that he could have updated things way better than to make them ALL look like General Grievous' family members, but still you have a loyal and huge fan base that you MUST consider greatly to.

Third, I went on youtube.com to see what I can see about TF and I saw a hell of a lot of better TF samples that were home made or international commercials that just blows away anything that Gay...I mean Bay has done with our beloved Transformers. You can look on this site: http://www.sectorseven.org/remoteclient.ac1903.html

Click on the first document to see Grimlock as he SHOULD have come out. Damn! I wish some one else would have done TF. Doing the TFs in their original forms(yet updated) would have been much more appealing and down right awesome to see.

Fourth, this movie is nothing more than Gay...Bay that is; is cashing in with is connection with GM. Bay doesn't give a shit about the product or the legion of fans that follow it. All that this movies is going to do is make Bay a lot of people pissed off at him and at Hollywood. Fucking shit! I'm getting so sick of this shit. Hollywood, you better start doing things right before the people start doing some thing that you will regret, like boycotting your sorry ass movies. Imma go watch the REALLY Transformers movie. Too bad Unicron can't eat these Hollywood assholes.

I seriously can't believe people are still pointing at that Grimlok clip, or even the old Sideswipe and white Optimus clips as examples of what they should have looked like. Are you kidding me? You seriously think that would have been the right approach for the live action movie?
