SPIKE FERESTEN To Replace MAD TV??

Published at:  May 08, 2007 12:43:29 AM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

Fox announces its fall slate a week from Thursday. Will “Mad TV” be on it?

From Tuesday morning’s Variety:

The renewal of ["Talkshow With Spike Feresten"] makes it more unclear if "Mad TV" will be back. Buzz (including some from inside the show itself) centered earlier this year on if the sketch comedy would bid adieu. That seemed unlikely, as Fox didn't have another show in the wings to pick up "Mad TV's" slot.

But should both sides fail to come to terms, it's possible "Talkshow" will be asked to take over the "Mad TV" spot.

"Mad TV" vet Artie Lange, currently sidekick on Sirius radio's "THe Howard Stern Show," is in discussions with the Fox Network on hosting a show that would follow "Talkshow."

Writers Fax Bahr and Adam Small are executive producers of "Mad TV." Their other credits include "In Living Color," "Son In Law," "In The Army Now," "House of Buggin," "The Jamie Kennedy Experiment," "Malibu's Most Wanted," "Blue Collar TV," "Foxworthy's Big Night Out," and "Thank God You're Here."

And MadTV just lost anyone good. The original team made it all seem so fresh to take a dumb idea and just run with it. And uh now.... Yeah.

and it feels like it's been on for 13 years too long. it's so bad that it deserves to be parodied in Cracked.

should merge like UPN & The WB did last year. Then just fall off into oblivion like The CW did this year.

I generally dislike "haters", but I'll be the first to say that Mad TV sucked it big. Other than the "Terminator Saves Jesus" thing eons ago, that show hasn't even made me crack a smile in it's underservedly long run.

Ah yes, I remember the Terminator Saves Jesus episode, it holds a very special place in my heart: I got my first blowjob during that episode when it first aired. When I started laughing at the skit the girl thought I was laughing at her and never did finish. Ah the memories!

    by wash

It actually was pretty damn funny at one point. I think the beginning of the end was soon after Nicole Sullivan left. I couldn't stand to watch it much after that. Every once on awhile I'll run into some of the newer stuff and it astounds me that the people that make that shit have jobs.

    by napoleon park

it's funny that an article about the Feresten talk show has no one actually mentioning the show in the talk back. I assume no one's seen it? And I wish I could say the same - I watched the first couple of episodes and it was so ungodly bad I can't believe it lasted more then 4 or 5. If anything ever deserved an early and immediate cancellation... they had Mary Lyn Rajskub drink Nyquil and operate heavy machinery, and they couldn't ever find a way to make that funny.
No no no, the Buddy Holly glasses aren;t funny, the whole early Letterman/Conan/Kilby schtick of "How weird is it that I have a talk show" is old and busted. the idea that Fos would actually promote this show to a better time slot is even worst than Fox canceling Wonderfalls, Andy Richter Controls..., Greg the Bunny and... Well, no, nothing is worst than canceiling Arrested Development.

...I don't care anyway. She was the Phil Hartman of Mad Tv!
Don't wanna say that she is nearly as good as Hartman, because we all know how brillant this man was, but when she left, there was just no reason to watch anymore!

It's a great mystery, like who built the pyramids. I will be pleased to see Mad TVs eventual demise. Whenever I think SNL sucks all I need to do is watch thirty seconds of Mad TV and all of a sudden SNL looks genius.

Mad TV owns. If they weren't obviously complicit in the suckitute of the show, SNL would make me sad for the cast when I watch. Or maybe I just don't get the jokes because I'm not a Jew or something.

    by napoleon park

That virtually all of the comments here are about an about-to-be canceled show you all claim to hate, when the much more abominable news it the promotion and possible expansion of a truly detestable show you'd all despise if you had ever actually seen it. Beastie saw it, he knows what I'm saying. A Spike Feresten Hour will make you beg for the worst hour of the worst SNL imitation... or the worst talk show. Joan Rivers, Chevy Chase, Whoopi... that incredibly boring talk show with Aunt Hilda from Sabrina... will seem like The Golden Age of Television's Ernie Kovacs, Steve Allen, and the Best of Carson in comparison to the deadly non-entertainment that is Feresten. If you had seen it you would know and fear it. Fear the Feresten. Fearrrrr...

the memorable sketches on MadTV. The edited Sopranos mini-episode, Apocalypse Rudolph, Sasso and whats-her-name from Family Guy singing in that VH1 parody, and there was a blaxploitation parody with Spiers, Sasso, Lamarr, and Wilson that just cracks me up. ...and Deborah Wilson's rack will always be sadly missed.

    by zootrain

Mad TV has been going for 12 years now, yet the Ben Stiller Show was cancelled after 13 episodes. Mad TV is quite possibly the most unfunny sketch comedy show...ever. In 13 years, and sporadic viewings...I laughed once. Once.

Hell Yes, Night Stand was a great parody. Hell, since FX probably has them lying around, just rerun Son Of The Beach..that would make a great late night Saturday six-pack show. Possibly the most politically incorrect sitcom ever to hit the air...outside of Always Sunny, which I can't wait for....

Mad TV once I heard they were doing those animations of the Spy-Vs-Spy cartoons and the Don Martin cartoons and not paying either the prohias estate or martin anything. Gaines figures he owned the cartoons - well, technically he did pay for them) so cutting the artsits in on the resale wasn't something he needed to do. Or give them credit. As far as the show was concerned the Don Martin cartoons were "Mad cartoons". Nicole Sullivan on King of Queens, Hot Properties and Raines, great. Will Sasso on Less Than Perfect, very good indeed. Alex Borstein on Family Guy, okay. Debra Wilson's breasts in a tight sweater, priceless. Watching Mad Tv very infrequently and still seeing Ms. Swan, Kenny Rogers and that juvenile Stewart character on every episode you catch, infuriating. Worse than the Ferrell/O'Teri Cheerleaders sketch; I had to change the channel and wait five minutes every time that came on.

An entire thread of MadTV comments, and no love for David Herman? The original cast (Sullivan, Herman, Orlando Jones, Artie, Mary Scheer etc.) was solid and occasionally brilliant. Bornstein and Sasso had their moments. Every other person they've had on the show as a regular has been an untalented hack.
