MEDIUM Gets Season Four!!

Published at:  May 07, 2007 3:24:24 PM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

Glenn Gordon Caron’s excellent “Medium” just got news of its fourth-season pickup a full week before NBC announces its fall schedule!

(The newer and vastly inferior “Ghost Whisperer,” meanwhile, remains on the CBS bubble!)

Look! Press release!

NBC SEES ‘MEDIUM’ IN ITS FUTURE FOR 2007-08 WITH EARLY SERIES RENEWAL

BURBANK – May 7, 2007 – NBC has issued an early renewal for its acclaimed drama "Medium" (Wednesdays, 10-11 p.m. ET) for a fourth season in 2007-08, it was announced today by Kevin Reilly, President, NBC Entertainment.

"'Medium' is a quality show with an outstanding star that has always delivered a very loyal audience," said Reilly. "We are pleased to know that we can look forward to more of its unique storytelling next year under executive producer Glenn Gordon Caron's superb creative vision."

This season, "Medium" is averaging a 3.0 rating, 8 share among adults 18-49 and 8.5 million viewers overall. Airing in the Wednesday 10-11 p.m. (ET) slot, "Medium" is building by 37 percent on its 18-49 lead-in from "Crossing Jordan."

From acclaimed executive producer, creator and director Glenn Gordon Caron ("Moonlighting") comes "Medium," a chilling drama series inspired by the real-life story of research medium Allison DuBois. Emmy Award winner Patricia Arquette ("Stigmata," "Flirting with Disaster") stars as a young wife and mother who, since childhood, has been struggling to make sense of her dreams and visions of dead people. Arquette received the Emmy in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series category after the telecast of the initial 16 episodes of the critically acclaimed series. She has also nominated for a Golden Globe and Screen Actor's Guild award in 2007 for her performances on the show.

As a part-time consultant to the district attorney's office, Allison (Arquette) uses her psychic abilities, which consist of talking to dead people as well as seeing the future in her dreams to solve violent and horrifying crimes that have remained mysteries to her boss D.A. Devalos (Miguel Sandoval, "The Division") and others within the criminal justice system. Jake Weber ("Meet Joe Black") stars as Allison's supportive husband Joe, and Sofia Vassilieva ("Eloise at the Plaza") and Maria Lark star as Ariel and Bridget, the two eldest Dubois children. David
Cubitt ("10.5") also stars as Detective Lee Scanlon and Miranda and Madison Carabello share the role of youngest daughter, Marie Dubois.

Caron is creator and executive producer. Kelsey Grammer
("Girlfriends"), Steve Stark, Rene Echevarria and Oscar winner Ronald L. Schwary ("Ordinary People") are executive producers. "Medium" is produced by CBS Paramount Network Television, Picturemaker Productions, Inc. in association with and Grammnet Productions.

I was over in the "Most memorable TV moments of the 2006/007 season" thread citing a medium example (one ghost tells another he's dead, then they return to the first ghosts apartment and witness his murderous, obese and remarkably calm and bored looking wife with a leg in one hand and a hacksaw in the other, preparing to casually dismember the corpse. Memorable?
I laughed my ass off. *** My biggest gripe with the 2006-007 season? They should have left Medium on Monday nights and given s the Heroes/Medium super-hero double feature we were promised instead of trying to kill the series by burying it opposite "Lost".

    by napoleon park

Not to wax nostalgic on my long ago personal live, but Patricia Arquette with her crooked teeth, tired eyes, awful haircut and that huge bosom that looks droopy even when she's obviously wearing a tight bra beneath her night gown, is just so human looking that she's way sexier than Love. There's nothing happier than snuggling up with a warm, heavy-bosomed babe in a flannel night gown in a cool bed on a cold winter night. Such is life.

It's not like any other show that I watch and I think psychics (used by the police or otherwise) are either scumbag conpeople or deluded twats. And still I like this show, I think it's the family dynamic they have, Arquette and Weber are really great in their roles and the scripts often take an unexpected turn. Better than you would imagine it to be.

Aside from the interesting and sometimes creepy psychic scenarios, what separates "Medium" from the usual type of procedural drama (and the main reason I like it) is Allison's home life. It's extremely well-written and unlike other series, the dialogue feels real. It doesn't hurt that I've loved Patricia Arquette since "A Nightmare On Elm Street Part 3: The Dream Warriors."

    Excellent Use Of Guest Actors...

    by mjgtexas

The show makes nice use of character actors, all who shine brighter than usual. Among the highlights this season: Larry Miller-who is my favorite guest performance of any series this year-as the ahole boss who sacrifices himself at the end; Adam Goldberg as the dying fired contractor who snaps; Jon Polito and the actor whose name escapes me (he plays one of the Geico cavemen) as two recently dead schmoes who help each other out.

One thing that could make the show better is no more crying scenes for Ms. Arquette. She can do funny, quirky, subtle-but I haven't seen more unconvincing tear ducts this side of Dr. Christian Troy.

About CBS and The Time Slot

    by mjgtexas

CBS owns the show, but due to the time hogs known as CSI, passed on putting it on their schedule, so NBC sanpped it up. The time slot could have been worse. Medium was originally moved from Monday to accomodate the great King Sorkin's diatribes, and slated to a Friday night death slot for midseason, but to NBC's credit, decided to place Medium to humpday (still a shitty timeslot) and moved decrepit Law & Order to Friday. Since Sorkin's barf-fest is dead, hopefully Medium will return to its original home.

    "based on a true story"

    by childofmen

I think my only beef with this show is that it doesn't exist just as a fictional story about a psychic who helps the police. I think I could deal with that in and of itself. But by promoting it as based on a real-life psychic, Alison DuBois, it helps to lend creedence to her claims (and the claims of others like Sylvia Browne) that they regularly help the police to solve crimes, etc. which they then in turn use to make money by selling books, psychic readings, etc. It's the element of the show that reinforces the idea that Alison DuBois and others are "authentic" that bugs me. I would definitely hope most people watch this show for what it is, a fictional drama, but it bugs me that they also use the show to promote the real-life Alison DuBois and probably give her credibility, even though in real-life she doesn't have the kind of track record in solving real crimes, etc. that her fictional counterpart does.

    by punto

which is not to say I don't think it's great. Whenever I have a medium episode on the queue, I'm like "eh, maybe I'll watch it later, the new Heroes is out!"; I'm not really ever "looking forward to the next episode". As soon as I put it in tho, I'm hooked for the whole 40 mins. I've never seen a shitty "filler" episode of medium (and if I did, I'd probably lose interest in the whole thing). I wish the other shows could achieve that.

    "authentic" psychics

    by oisin5199

Actually, I think if there's such a thing as "authentic" psychic phenomena, Medium is probably the most plausible depiction I've seen. Things aren't spelled out for her most of the time. Things come to her in symbols and images, metaphors, dreams, 'feelings' and odd experiences that she then has to work to interpret. And sometimes she gets it wrong.

While Ghost Whisperer tends to be pretty schlocky 'talking to dead people' to resolve issues, complete with the 'going into the light' fantasy. I understand why some people like GW (besides the cleavage factor) because if you've lost someone, it's nice and comforting to indulge in that particular fantasy.

GW also has the nice 'young married couple' fantasy going for it too, with the perfect, understanding husband. But Medium surpasses in the family situation as well, as people have noted. The psychic stuff aside, Medium feels like one of the most realistic depictions of how a young family functions, out of any show, fantasy/scifi or not. And sometimes Joe has to be the voice of reason and occasionally gets pissed off. This is a remarkably creative show, but no, it's not a serialized, must see when it airs situation. I'm glad it's coming back, even though it takes me a while to get to it on the DVR.

    Ghost Whisperer and Medium

    by napoleon park

I like Ghost Whisperer too. And Jennifer Love Hewitt is nice eye candy. (Her album "Naked" was a real chore to listen to, though. Although her cover of Me and Bobby McGee is pretty funny.) To say her breasts are twice as large as Patricia Arquettes is unrealistic, though (Like I expect realism from an AICN talkback.) It's an optical illusion created by Hewitts otherwise ultra slim near anorexic frame. Pretty slim face, skinny body and a willingness to exploit her rack with plunging necklines and snug tops and, of course, my favorite, the v-necked linen halter dress worn under a down-leering crane shot while she runs down a long hall in slow motion. Arquette is, if anything, bigger and rounder, but covers herself up in baggy sweaters and jackets. Though she is willing to do a lot of in bed, semi-nude or night gown scenes (appropriate for a show about a woman who dreams) and, to be fair for the female viewers, both she and hubby Joe do a lot of shower scenes. Ghost Whisperer is far less 'realistic' in the way Hewitt always has a handful of make-up on, even in bed. who sleeps with that much mascara and fake eyelashes? And where does she get the nonstop supply of new clothes, when it would make more sense for an antique store dealer to have a wardrobe of "vintage" gear. The problem is, producer Hewitt got her staart as a child and teen star and even in her mid-20s is trying to cling to that youthful look. That's why she surrounds herself with amazonian costars like six foot tall Aisha Tylar in the first season and human bulldozer Camryn Manheim this year. It makes her look even tinier, more petite and younger in comparison. Arquette plays an adult, and the person who ascribed a "MILFy" quality to her nailed in. Both shows have done a lot of good episodes this season, but Medium has done more great ones. *** Medium's balance of the procedural crime drama and her domestic home life has also had a major impact on subsequent shows that followed the same template, such as the pre-Bochco episodes of "Commander In Chief", and "Shark". (Although that same balance of work and home pre-existed on The Dick Van Dyke Show in the '60s.) *** I like both shows, which is why the topic line "Ghost Whisperer and Medium" avoided using the "Vs.". But the similarities are superficial and the differences are major - Ghost Whisperer is a lighter though sometimes scary Gothic Romance/Horror series with a spiritual "Joan of Arcadia/Inappropriately Touched By An Angel" vibe. (Yes, I stole that joke from Bart Simpson.) Medium is a more "realistic" and mundane crime procedural with supernatural elements that doesn't adhere to a rigid formula, does more innovative episodes and has better writing (and a better cast.) Medium also seems to be targeted more to an intelligent adult audience, while Ghost Whisperer seems targeted at the teen/youth demographic that Love is so desperately trying to cling to. (And who, no doubt, fantasize about clinging to her.)

I've always wondered why the phone is on Joe's side of the bed when it's always Alison that would get the late night calls. Guess they have to come up with an excuse to wake him up so he'll be in the scene.

Napoleon, take a closer look at JLH's clothes (I know, hard to see past the boobs). I think the whole antique store owner is just an excuse for JLove to wear her awful wardrobe. Some of the outfits she wears are downright ridiculous or hideous. They explain it that she has 'quirky' tastes from her vintage shop. Last year, my wife was convinced that she was also wearing a wig. She's a bit of a freak, I think.

    Great series

    by darquelyte

What sets this apart is the relationship with the family is portrayed in a very realistic manner, except that Joe should have got his own bedroom by now. The other thing is how they always seem to find new and interesting ways for her ability to move the show along without the way she "sees" things ever being repeated. Nearly every episode has her "seeing" the crimes but each and every time it's in a different way and the plot is never predictable like most procedurals. Very well written show. If you're interested in writing for television, study this and BSG and you'll become a master.

She doen't 'always talk to the victim' - she's done that rarely. As darquelyte correctly stated, they rewrite the shows format nearly every episode. She has weird, inexplicable dreams that she has to figure out like riddles nad make sense of. Once she had a song stuck in her head that lead her to a dead victims iPod. One episode someone cited above happened entirely in the past with Teen allison and all the current day scenes were her precognitive dreams of the future - except for the final scene which revealed that by NOT preventing a suicide twenty years befoe, she prevented a present day murder. Then there was the classic 'two ghosts' episode i cited up top. I don't have a checklist of how the episodes differed, but this series is Far from formulaic. If anything, it's too challenging for some of my stupid friend to keep up with. Yes, I have stupid friends - they're nice people. they find different ways each week. Notable this season was the cartoon dreams the daughter was having of violent deaths. Pretty disturbing. There was the 3D episode last season. Or when Alison woke up as a dead woman (like she was possessed) and became decidedly hotter thanks to different makeup and wardrobe. The only thing that is the same is the looks of disbelief she gets from Joe, Davalos and Scanlon - but they generally tend to trust her in the end.

    by bizarrojerry

People continue to be confused about the difference between big breasts and just nice breasts. You see, JLH's cans are not about the size. They're not really all that big. It's all about the quality. As for GW, I don't see much of it, but it doesn't seem that bad. Just very mediocre. I have heard from a friend who always watches it that lately they seem to be leaning towards making the show scarier.

    We used to get Medium

and then it disappeared. very odd. The bbc showed and then Rte picked it up and then it was gone. RTE dumped in the graveyard slot along with Boston Legal.

They never announced that they were showing Veronica Mars and without any Fan fare. bought both series. Ran it at half 3 in the afternoon. before that it was ghost whisperer. Ghost whisperer is apalling. I watched one episode(maybe more icant recall) and thought it was one of the most boring programmes that I had ever seen. Nothing ever happens. I thought to myself, is american tv so bad that they are creating carbon copies of other crap shows. Ghost Whisperer should have sued by the makers of truly dreadfull calling/ you dont know that one...well it stars Elisha Dushku and she works in Morgue and dead people talk to her which sounds uncanilly like ghost whisperer in which love Hewitt stars as a person that talks to the ghosts of dead people.

Is if MR CARON changes the character of Joe and has him start doing GUY THINGS ala Al Bundy: kicking it with the guys, Hooters
nights here and there watching everyone else, parties, etc. I used to be the biggest Medium person around, but Joe's Mr Mom antics were driving me crazy. Yuck.
