So There’s This 3D Horror Film Called SCAR... But Is It Any Good?!
Hey, everyone. ”Moriarty” here.
I’ve never heard of this until right now, and based on the report from Adam Paranoia, there may be a reason for that. All I know is 3D torture porn was actually mentioned in the Bible as one of the signs of end times.
Hi kids, it's Adam Paranoia.
Last night at the Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, I managed to squeeze my way into one of the five remaining seats for the new 3D horror flick, SCAR. The five open seats were reserved for the film's director. As the movie began, I quickly realized why the director didn't invite any guests to fill his seats. It's really simple to sum up the entire film in one sentence. This film is a very bad "Are You Afraid of the Dark" episode that happens to feature the most brutal and effective torture scenes I've ever seen in an American theater. Aside from those few sequences, the directing, editing, script, and score walk on thin ice at Lake Uwe Boll.
The film is about a serial killer who plays a particular game with his victims. He will strap two helpless people down to tables and torture them back and forth until one of them breaks and tells him to finish off the other. Imagine having to stare into the eyes of a best friend, family member, or significant other and order their execution to save your own ass? It's pretty intense and the film works really well here. The torture methods are easily more gruesome and violent than HOSTEL or SAW. During these particular scenes, the helpless teens give a fairly believable performance. The killer on the other hand was something out of 90's slasher film, where he suddenly becomes a super intelligent, articulate, witty villain the minute he has people under his control. The final death in the film wasn't color corrected, meaning it's either new or is one of many different endings being tested. I hope the producers read this because I can tell you it the only redeeming element of the film's finale.
It's evident that this film was a first time directing effort from someone who can't really comprehend what makes a film suspenseful. There is a scene where our hero is chasing the killer through a dark forest that should have had the audience thinking, "Oh my god, I can't believe she is putting herself in this danger. I hope she makes it out alive!" That wasn't the case. The audience sat there during this slow paced, unmotivated, and dumb sequence thinking, "Oh my god. I wonder how this movie was ever financed??" My friend and I laughed when we realized the chase was leading straight for an old barn. Come to think of it, if anyone has ever seen BEHIND THE MASK: THE RISE OF LESLIE VERNON, you'd probably think SCAR was a fantastic work of comedic gold.
Also, if an insider told me that the film's composer was trying to ruin the director's career, I'd believe him. Enough said about the music. The screenwriter killed this film at stage one by writing a script that has more one dimensional, unneeded characters than it does scares. The plot is lame and the story is too simple for a feature length film.
I know many of you are probably curious to hear about the 3D element of SCAR. At numerous times, the lighting is way too dark for the technology to shine and the director only played with three dimensional gags during non-scary moments. At one point during a scene that I assume was suspenseful, I took my 3D glasses off and watched. If this movie had no 3D effect, I guaranty you it is the worst film ever made. I'd like to talk more about the film itself, but I'm going to focus on the hilarious aftermath of the screening.
The film's final credits were rolling and the lights came up. A man in front of me was completely passed out. Some studio people ran to his aid and tried to stand him up. He fell right over. They gave him water and called for the paramedics. When he was competent enough to speak, he told the studio people that the film was too bloody and intense for him to bear. A man in a suit and tie interrupted him by saying, "Jerry, stop talking. There's people still in the theater". Another studio person walked up and said, "Hey man, that's your movie on the screen. Your own film was too intense for you". I looked for a Jerry on IMDB and didn't find anything. Perhaps this was an investor of the film. It's hilarious to see that the one man who couldn't handle the film's gore was also the man who made the fucking movie.
I was really excited to see SCAR because it was the first horror film I had ever experienced in 3D and it also featured the actor who plays Young Dexter, Devon Graye. Though, after seeing it, I can say that nothing will save this film. If the ratings board tells the studio to cut out the blood and violence, this film WILL become the worst horror movie in cinematic history. Keep the gore or you've got nothing at all.

TP is the lowest of the low for horror these days. People keep crying out that "it's saved the genre" it hasn't. At all. Just because you show someone get their leg sawed off, does not make it scary. Good horror, relies on story, suspense, setting, tone, characters ect. not just on effects. I love horror, and I grew up watching it (and yes I also love gory as hell films) but these are just retreads of the same territory. People competeing to show us the most depraved parts of their minds. Let's go back to the time where just a steady shot of someone (ie Jack in The Shining) could send shivers down your spine. and if you want a film that has both watch Audition, which is a perfect mixture.

if that's not some kind of stunt publicity, i don't know what is. These people make me laugh.
-
Not a new director... he directed this odd political docudrama set during the Republican National Convention called "The F Word" which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival a couple years back. Was an okay movie but didn't really speak volumes about him as a horror director... or viewer apparently.
-
dumb old fool couldn't keep his family fed. One day he was chewin' on some corn, when up from his head came a flash of torture porn. Shit, that is. WELL first thing you know jed's a thousand-aire, kinfolks said "Jed, we don't really care" So he went to california, an made a movie thing, and passed the fuck out the preview screening. Dumbass that is
-
Yeah passed out sounds like a stunt. " A MOVIE SO SHOCKING(LY BAD) YOU MAY PASS OUT FROM FRIGHT " Is it as bad as ANDRE THE BUTCHER?
-
I'd love to see it re-made.
Hm...maybe this would've been a great idea for Saw 3...D. Or Hostel 3-D. I hope eli roth is reading, and if he is...DO SOME ACID! -
Then you haven't seen everything....
-
It seems there is a lot of shit floating our way. I don't think there's been a positive review on anything in a while.
-
I know, it's a negative review, but the guy who passed out seems to me like he tried to create something like a legend about that film. The DVD Cover will read something like: "The film that is so hard, that even its creators couldn't stand the violence!"
-
I blame that fuck off Eli Roth. What a douche bag. Why would anybody in there right mind want to sit down in a theater for 2 hours and watch someone being tortured, screaming, crying and begging for there life? The first Saw film was original and the mystery as to who was doing the murders, why they are doing them, and the effect it had the the police investigating it was intresting enough,te gore just moved it along. I've stated it before on this site a thousand times and i'll keep saying it,spend sometime in a war zone (Iraq,Afghanistan,Darfor) or just pick up a National Geographic some time and see pictures of survivors of torture and you'll not want to see this shit protrayed for fun. I'm not for censorship at all, I just choose not to watch dumb shit like Hostel or Touristas or other bull shit.

That one big dude.
-
Just like in the William Castle´s days

There's another review at - http://www.cakebite.com/?p=46

Yessir, he's a regular Bob Zemeckis.

ALL of them.

You shoulda poked him in the ribs, tickled him, or at least kicked him in the kidneys. Fucking PLANT!
-
the talented writer of this film, Zack Ford, who must be about 24. Pretty impressive script sale at such a young age. Bummer the reviews haven't been too kind, but I'm glad the 3D sounds like it works. I really like the concept of it, pairing victims together and playing them against one another. I'll definitely check it out if it gets theatrical release, although I wish I'd been invited to the screening... Angela Bettis is hot.

"If this movie had no 3D effect, I guaranty you it is the worst film ever made."
The fact that the 3D effects made it better boggles the mind. Seam even worse that it was not in any of the horror part of the film.
I smell bullshit about the DIRECTOR passing out, if that story is true i bet its a half truth that he was playing up his own bullshit film. -
This review was worth the price of admission right there. I heart Adam Paranoia.
-
Wow. I thought a stunt as corny as that was above most film producers. But hey, this is showbiz. Also, the "walk on thin ice at Lake Uwe Boll" line
was hillarious, i may have to steal it.

TP is clearly the new crutch that horror is clinging to, much like the various Scream rip-offs clung onto self-referential oh-so-witty scripts. In a few years there'll be something new to cling to......maybe werewolves.
By the way, typing this on the Wii is pretty tough, so you fuckers better appreciate it!!! -
An exec who passes out at his own movie screening. That's downright priceless. Maybe he passed out with the knowledge that nothing could save this film. Hopefully the same thing happens with the audience of Transformers. Whatta fucked up movie that is.
-
utterly worthless. I'd rather watch the slew of post modern ironic slasher films from the 90's than anything by eli roth.
-
What kind of review was that? Sounds damn good to me if you can make a grown man pass out! AWESOME!! Thanks for the heads up that a horror film might not have a plot and that the gore is the best thing about it (YES!!!).
Its like you reviewed a Robert Redford movie and preached that it is terrible because there is too much talking and not enough gore. LOL.
Thats why horror movies are successful nowadays. You must have seen the Hostel movies? Make any money from them? You bet they did. Now thanks to you - SCAR 3D is going to go gangbusters!
And yes, the 3D is going to make this film simply a must see. Check out my exclusive interview with the producer on MarketSaw. Type in Scar in the search field - lots of posts for ya! The movie is not new to me haha...
