GEMINI MAN Is Not Dead Yet!!

Published at:  May 07, 2007 5:48:59 AM CDT

Hey, everyone. ”Moriarty” here.

Has it really been ten years this one’s been making its way through the development mill? Seems like as long as there's been an AICN, people have been talking about making GEMINI MAN.

I remember at one point when Harry was waxing rhapsodic about what sort of technology was going to be used to bring this idea to life. Basically, some action star is going to play two roles in this... one as himself, and one as a much-younger version of himself. The kick would be getting someone who was a star when much younger and getting them to play opposite that iconic younger version we remember, like Sean Connery or Harrison Ford. Can you imagine seeing HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER-era Connery having to go head-to-head with THUNDERBALL-era Connery? Movie geek bliss.

I have no idea who they’re planning to use if they actually make the film this time around, but the big news is that there’s a new writer on it, and it’s a fairly big-name A-list guy, so Disney must feel like it’s worth continued development. Let’s see where this goes this time, according to this story in Variety:

Walt Disney Pictures has tapped scribe David Benioff to bring his take to the long-gestating action project "Gemini Man."

Benioff -- who'll pocket a fee of $2 million -- will be doing a ground-up reworking of the story of an over-the-hill hitman forced to do battle with a younger clone of himself.

Pic will be produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, who boarded the project about nine months ago; Bruckheimer toppers Mike Stenson and Chad Oman will exec produce along with Angry Films' Don Murphy. Jason Reed will act as creative executive for the Mouse.

Over the years, a number of writers have been linked with the project, including "Armageddon" and "Next" scribe Jonathan Hensleigh.

I can hardly wait for the negative TB on opening day.

    Gemini Man

    by lgm

I thought this was a remake of the TV show. Where this guy could use his watch to turn invisible for 15 minutes, any longer and he was stuck being invisible. I have no idea why it was called Gemini Man. I think that was his sign, I think it was on the back of his denim jacket. I think it may have sucked.

    Oh yeah...

    by bruce leroy

I remember this flick...well atleast its development hell that is. I remember this was to star Harrison Ford at one point and then later, this suddenly turned in to a Nicolas Cage film (with Michael Bay at the helm)...Hmmmm Mel Gibson would be cool but that's never going to happen. I like the concept hope they won't mess it up.

... but to me it sounds a little too much like a Stephen Baldwin TV movie.

Not the old Ben Murphy series ? Surely not !!

    by robinp

He had a (then) state of the art wristwatch to make himself visible because some accident or other had made him invisible. Shortly thereafter the actor disappeared altogether.

    Ben Murphy

    by mag7man

Acyually, he didn't quite disappear after Gemini Man. He had at least four more series (all lasting a season or less) after that including the leader of the TV series version of "The Dirty Dozen". One of many Fox disasters

    I think it's more likely

    by theta

I think it's more likely they'll get a younger star and make him old than recreate an older star's youthful image. Going by that yardstick? Christian Bale or Ed Norton.

actually I think I heard jet Li was tagged to play another twin Jet Li movie at one time. Maybe this was it?

is the plan to use exisiting footage? how the fuck do you make sean connery look 30 again? do they just use another actor? I'm lost.

It was Mel for a while

    by bunkyboo

during development around 2000. It supposed to be an aging star- that's the point- who battles a 25 to 30 year younger version of himself. Great new technology was developed for the youth effect and it was much more sophisticated than the 2D Lola work on X3. Better looking, too. Then Disney shelved their FX division and with it their amazing development on this project. Good to see it back.

Performance capture with new CG techniques, not unlike the work ILM did for Davy Jones.

What do you geeks feel about an older Stallone vs his younger movie star self from the 80's or Schwarzenegger?

    Make it a Franchise.

    by dashl

Start the movie off a round table sort of thing, all of our favorite aging acting stars sitting around it. The boss comes in (someone call Charlton Heston) comes in and tells them they have all been replaced with clones. Then you have one movie for each star as the clone hunts them down. Or maybe I am just crazy.

    by orbots commander

A full 120 page script has been written with this premise? Really? It'd be a stretch to make this concept of younger self vs. older self to work as a short story, much less a full length movie.

    has to be Ford

    by wilberton

Harrison would be the only one that would be perfect for this. He's old enough for it to be a convincing age difference, but still in good shape and active enough to be able to play his younger self also (for his face to be regrafted). Connery and Eastwood would be waaay too old, they would need a whole other actor to play their younger self. Cage would be terrible! ...what would be the point in that? ...no, only Ford. It would also be a perfect movie for him, reignite some interest with a cool concept after yeeeears of turds.

Oh, yeah - the Shat! KHAAAAAANNNNN!!!!

    by triumph poops!

Damn it! If only Shatner would seriously commit to losing a good chunk of weight and getting back into semi-normal shape to make any action scenes believeable it would be a total geek blast to see current day Shat up against his prime 1960's Kirk self. But that really is the problem -- while they might have actually perfected some FX technology to make a younger version, ironically his present day older self is just too out of shape. Come on, Bill! Lose some weight! It would be better for your health and your ticker in the long run anyway AND you could do a movie like this!

Then again, the big problem with Shatner...

    by triumph poops!

...is it opens another can of worms. IF you could actually create a truly convincing lifelike younger Shat onscreen, then why waste him in GEMINI MAN? Fuck that! Ship that SFX crew and all their technology over to Paramount instead and put the one and only REAL young Kirk back on the bridge of the Enterprise for the new JJ Abrams TREK movie and instantly bag the idea of ever letting Matt Damon anywhere near the set!

    they did it to Brando...

    by maniaq

in Superman Returns.. er, Lives? Returns! you know...

I think AICN even had a link to the v.cool v.geek.heaven CG shop showing how they did it.

Yeah I remember when Harrison Ford was to be the one and let's face it he's really the ONLY one for the role (were they originally thinking Eastwood?) but I think they need to go somewhere different to The Mechanic with the plot...

Not that I wouldn't pay to see Deckard playing the role of Jan-Michael Vincent and, say, Ryan playing Charles Bronson but it would be such a shame for it not to have some sort of original twist, you know?

Shatner sounds different now than he did in the original STAR TREK series. Old people sound different than young people.
