Cool News
Yes it is true... mummy came in my house, Wolfman's got nards and it's totally not Bo-gus! MONSTER SQUAD on DVD!!!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Ever since I arranged a reunion screening a little over a year ago, I've been getting emails of all kinds from Monster Squad fans around the world. The movie speaks to a whole generation of geeks. It's a ballsy kids movie that could not be made in this day and age. It's kinda goofy, but dead fucking serious, too. There's some harsh shit in this movie, which is probably why I liked it so much growing up. The kids face some real danger... Fred Dekker was not afraid to have a vampire pick up a 6 year old girl by the face and call her a bitch before hissing at her, etc.
Ever since the Alamo Drafthouse screening (here's a story we posted on that) there have been a rash of reunion screenings all over the country. I've kept in touch with the cast and director and they've been flabbergasted at the reaction and turnout from these things. They've met thousands of fans... even crazier fans than me.
Due in no small part to the turnout of the fans, the rights issues that have been holding back a release of MONSTER SQUAD on DVD have been cleared up and Lionsgate is putting out a 2-disc special edition this coming July 24th. It'll be packed to the gills and has a badass cover, too. Take a look:

The full specs can be found at Movieweb.com, but we're looking at two commentary tracks. One, a technical commentary with director Fred Dekker and cinematographer Bradford May, another a cast commentary with Dekker, Andre Gower, Ashley Bank (cutie, by the way) and Ryan Lambert.
Also, you'll get a Making Of, extended and deleted scenes (I heard Dekker unearthed all his video tape copies of his dailies and found some really fun stuff), a reunion featurette, a vintage interview with Tom Noonan in full Frankenstein make-up, stills, trailers, TV spots and posters...
But more than all that, we finally get the movie... widescreen, remastered and on our goddamn DVD shelf where it belongs... looking at my shelf, I see it will be resting between MONSTER HOUSE and MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL.
I'm also hearing that Dekker's other '80s mini-masterpiece, NIGHT OF THE CREEPS, is being eye-balled for DVD as well and if MONSTER SQUAD is a success we'll see that come to life, too. Hooray!!

in the years since his passing. Greatness abound!
-
Tits. 'Bout time this thing came out. Can't wait to watch it as an adult and realize how shitty it was. PS- is Garbage Pail Kids movie out on DVD?
-
about 3 years ago i couldn't sleep and turned on tnt at around 3 am to find this damn fine movie on. and it's still bad ass. i'm buyin this one for sure and forcing everyone i know to watch it.
-
Bout fuckin' time!
-
... please help our American cousins.
-
Its about damn time!
-
I have the garbage pail kids on dvd, and it's fantastically awful.
-
Best week ever in DVD News
-
the only movie I was not permitted to watch as a child. I still have yet to see it even though I am no longer a young lad (except in the genitalia. Fresh as a daisy there.) Tell me, gwarwilleatyou, is this an official region 1 release?
-
I'm not as apeshit over this movie as some, but this news is kick ass! Say, why was there never a sequel to this?
-
I wish there was a commentary track by Shane black
-
Remake this movie NOW!!!
-
Seriously, this shit being announced was last week. Catch the fuck up!!!! That cover looks like utter fucking shit. I'd rather have the kids on the front of the monster mobile, like on the VHS and poster.
-
The DVD was announced last year at a Con in Jersey, if you're going to be a dick about it. But what wasn't announced was the full rundown of specs, the new kick-ass cover and the release date. Thanks.
-
Yes it is on DVD. MGM released it a couple years ago for region 1. It sells for about $9.99 to $14.99 depending where you go.
-
Power to the people! Yes. So my letters were not in vain. Yes! Yes! Yes!!!!!! Monster friggin Squad is in the house!!!!!!!!! This is a good day.
-
This should have been a Halloween-themed release. Oh well, it'll be nice to finally see this in widescreen.
-
Well worth tracking down on-line. Although it was intended and pitched a a PG type affair Shane Black couldn't help but cuss like hell in all the scene directions "So the smoke clears, and out steps... You're not going to believe who this motherfucker is...It's the fucking Creature from the Black Lagoon!!!" Amusing.
-
and NOT with a wolfman. 4th grade, our parents dropped us off and let us see the movie by ourselves. we held hands part way through, and I was on cloud nine. right at the end of the movie, she kissed me really quickly, and ran out of the theater giggling, to her parents waiting in the lobby.best movie EVER!
-
Sweet. This is one of my favorite movies all time. I always wanted to watch a drive in from my roof.
-
I think people like you should get your kidneys stabbed. "this was on my mom's dentist's cousin's blog like 3 hours ago, AINT IT OLD NEWS!!!"shut...the FUCK...up. I come here for this type of news, and I don't go trolling around the other halfwit news sites to see if they fell back asswards into a story. if it's improtant, it is either here first, or it ends up here soon after.burning taco diarrhea contributes more to society than the asshats that complain about AICN posting something 10 minutes after it's been up somewhere else.
-
I've never heard of this movie before, but it seems to have had a huge impact on a lot of you so I plan to check it out. I wonder if it's really as good as all this hype or if it's just the lens of impressionable youth. Regardless, I'll try maintain an open mind when I see it for myself. Thanks for the heads up!
-
...by BadMrWonka. Heh.
-
I watched "The Monster Squad" for the first time in a looooong time more than a year ago. I have a VHS copy of it (released by Vestron Video) that my mother purchased as a previously viewed movie at a long defunct video store called Video Bay back in the late '80s. I'll still treasure this VHS but it'll be really great to see this on DVD as a cleaned-up widescreen print with digital sound.
-
Because if sells of this help get Night of the Creeps on DVD, I want to be first in line. Not to mention I've been wanting to watch this with my kids since they turned four.
-
Night of the Creeps! Awesome.
-
This movie is a classic and it's about time it gets the DVD treatment.

Thank Bob this is coming out! Been waiting a long time for it!
-
The end of the world must be upon us.
-
When I bought my dvd player back in september 98 I made a list of movies I NEEDED and Monster Squad was right at the top.It maye have taken 10 years basicly but with the 2 commentaries, deleted scenes {hopefully the dustin diamond scene will be on this} the reunion and other fun goodies it will all be worth it.Now if only they could release NIGHT OF THE CREEPS,PHANTASM 2 AND THE LEGEND OF BILLIE JEAN my list will almost be complete.
-
...WHAT ELSE IS NOT ON DVD YET THAT WE NEED? WERE GETTING STONE"BOZ" COLD THIS JUNE SO THATS COOL. AND A BETTER VERSION OF FLASH"AHHHAAAAAAAH"GORDON IN AUGUST! OH YEAH, THE ISLAND WITH MICHAEL CAINE!!! I WANT THAT.... ALSO THE WHOOPEE BOYS!!!! GIMME THAT ONE TOO! AND SOMEBODY GET JOHNNY SOKKO REMASTERED WITH 5.1 AS WELL !!!
-
and hopefully still will, it's been years since I've seen it. When I was managing a fast food place here in western Kansas, I would look over at one of the shift managers and go "kick him in the nads" "wolfman don't have nads...WOLFMAN HAVE NADS" cannot wait to get it, now hopefully my crappy wal-mart gets it
-
i always thought the original poster was pretty rad. this new one, while decent, just isn't nearly as cool.
-
But she's not a virgin, so they grab the small girl to do it?
-
and then Peter Petrelli tosses a guy into a wall like he was a ritz cracker...oh no, wait...
-
That's all.
-
Where can I find the script on-line?
-
too bad fat kid is dead. the sequal would have worked perfectly, unlike the goonies who would just look ridiculous going on another adventure in there 30's, this may have worked. i have this on bootleg dvd twice, one copies off of hig definition tv. look forward to the extra features. long live shane black!
-
Really?
-
Me and my friends rented that movie damn near everytime we had a half-day at school and ate it with pizza. It really holds up for a kids film I think. Stan Winston rules!
-
God I love this movie. Meow Mix. of course I've known about this for months...even posted about it on the Underdog thread...(not off topic ...beagles) One of the greatest all-time beagles since Snoopy in this flick. Can't wait for this DVD, been drooling since Dread Central and Horrorhound broke this story. This is why God created movies. BadMrWonka I should have listed this one over on the Heroes thread when you asked...Damn you Wonka!!!
-
...back when it first played theatres...in a double feature with Superman IV the Quest for Peace...guess which film held his sugar maddened brains attention? And which one he slept through?
-
...Jonny Quest after this...one of those unrealised projects that make the gods weep...
-
MY NAME...(LOADS SHOT GUN)...IS HORACE!!!
Love that scene!
-
After Night of the Creeps comes out I'm... I'm... just gonna end it all I guess. These are all I needed out of this life.
-
THE MONSTER SQUAD isn't as good as it could have been, but it is a lot of fun and it's about damn time it's on DVD.
-
...I agree with you about cyberbeaver, (wasn't that Jessica's UserName for her Internet strip site? or is that one of Micah's Oedipal fantasies?) But as I am the vain thing that I am, I must point out that i probably was one of the first to announce this DVD at AICN on Feb 14th 2007 at 11:37:16 AM on the Underdog Teaser Trailer thread. I believe I also said something even earlier back in October '06 after the initial announcement was reported at Dread Central - but without confirmation of realease date or even *who* was releasing it - but that post was made by Prof.Ikamono and therefore has been expunged from the archives. So yeah, your right, the news WAS here at AICN you just had to read the right TalkBack. Damn you Wonka!
-
...I can't believe nobody's corrected you yet. It's NARDS not nads, NARDS. We had a whole wonderful, wonderful Talkback about the Silver Surfer's nutsack back in January or thereabouts called SILVER SURFER'S GOT NARDS inspired directly from this immortal line of dialogue.
-
How does that dog get up here anyway?
-
...never mind!
-
or something
-
Also, bonus, kickass movie inside the badass cover. Everybody wins.
-
Give me the amulet...BITCH!!!
-
Cat Head. No, really she's got a cat head.
-
...little kids and gays who like wolfman nards.
-
...sounds like inadequacy issues to me...
-
This movie rocks simply for the fact that the "Scary German Guy" is credited as such in the end credits.
-
this is one of my favorite childhood flicks!

Look. What your brother is so delicately attempting to inquire...and let me add my own personal curiosity...is the degree to which you may have...or have not...at some point in time...been dorked...

tomorrow.
-
I remember being crazy about this movie for quite a while. I caught it years later and enjoyed it still, but that's been quite a while now. I can't wait to have this one on my shelf. I still remember the Wolfman getting blown up and his body parts reattaching themselves. That was some pretty fucking cool shit.
-
It was called The Monster Squad, had the wolfman, Draculat and Frankenstein in it but they were the heroes.
-
Now I can retire my Monster Squad DVD bootlegs! As for Night of the Creeps, I'm holding on to my bootlegs (HD2DVD and the one with both endings) until I know what's on the official release. Oh and for the guy who mentioned The Legend of Billie Jean, a HD2DVD version is floating around the internets.
-
That's all.
-
I've written letters asking for this. I dont write letters EVER! Thank god this is happening, so I can FINALLY TRASH MY VCR!
-
Praise the DVD gods. I'll be buying this fucker asap!
-
Seriuosly - an alphabetised DVD collection?! And you...a grown man!
Great film...will definitely import this unless there's any word on a R2 release?
Haven't seen this in since it came out on VHS...watched it in a double bill with The Gate...awesome double bill! -
Now where's my DVD of Get Crazy?
-
I loved watching monster squad as a young'un, but i havent seen it for years .Does it still hold up today ? Also , the artwork on the 80s video sleeve was a lot better than this dvd cover.
-
uk release date? uk release date? uk release date? uk release date?
-
I remember watching this movie for the first time when I was probably 6 or 7 and at that time i was in love with the old horror classics, so coupled with the the kick ass kids it was like a dream come true. I had a copy on vhs which I would watch over and over and over again. Always running around screaming "wolfman's got nards!" This movie made me so happy for many years until my dad taped over it for a sports game (and I hate sports) so it was like a double-whammy right to the core of my dork world. I had tried to find this movie for years without luck and figured I'd probably never see it again. And I was sad. Never again would I see Rudy or Horace. But with this news I have become so excited that I can almost not contain myself. I will be getting this dvd as soon as possible. I only wish that children today could have movies made for them that didn't just treat them like dumb assholes, and sugar coat everything for them. This movie, along with The Goonies and The NeverEnding Story, where good things don't always happen, gave a look at the world that kids could understand because it played into their imaginations and was written for them and not about them. This movie will forever live on in my household and I hope many more people will find this classic movie because of this release
-
I bought a display case for it... a big one, the kind used for displaying autographed footballs and basketballs, etc... with mirrors all around it. The plan is to line the interior with garlic cloves, have the amulet on a stand in the middle and one day I'll figure out some sort of laser set-up that I can turn off and on with a switch... cut a hole in the bottom of the case and have a laser shoot up into the crystal. Dekker told me after the event that was how they got it to shine in the movie. That's the goal. If I'm going to be lucky enough to own it, I damn well better treat it right.
-
thats so 90s, Quint.
-
Sounds like you've got a nearly perfect set-up for the amulet. Only thing missing is for some angelic chorus music to cue up when you near it. Tip of the cap to you and your Monster Squad geek cred.
-
I have this movie in high definition since it gets played regularly in that format on the monster channel. I hope this geets released on Blu-Ray as well in the future.
-
Thank Van Helsing that the DVD army finally answered Eugene's letter!
Now bring us the unbutchered ANGUS on that shiney disc! -
been the first poster by default.
-
One of the best lines EVER.
-
"(what's his name) He didn't count"I loved this movie as a kid! Night of the Creeps, Night of the Comet" and now this! Good job! Good Job!
-
I have to admit to loving night of the creeps more (Tom Atkins is one fucked up cop in that movie) but this came out and joined the 80's sub genre of 'kids in trouble' movies like the Goonies etc. Its also a great companion peice to Fright Night.
-
my bad, I mispelled it, I was in a hurry and screwed up, please don't kick me in the NARDS
-
...i told ya. only one way to kill a werewolf...
-
I heard about this 2 years ago, anyone know what's up with it?
-
I love Fright Night. And I love the fact that Evil Ed grew up to be a Gay Porn Star..."You're so COOL! Brewster!"
-
About damned time! THANK YOU for getting a clue and releasing this on DVD!
-
This was even the cover story on Rue Morgue for their May 2006 issue...never came out...and Anchor Bay no longer lists it as an upcoming title.
-
I have a burned copy that was ripped from MOJO HD, with the original box art on the outside and cd cover on the DVD. This copy looks great, so it will be interesting to see the differences between the two. I'm glad I have a the custom DVD art because while I like this new cover, you can't beat the original.
-
Why am I glad I didn't know that?Fright Night is my all time fav. I even bought the sound track when I was younger. And the girl friend in tha tmovie .... wasn't she on Married w/ Children? And a box muncher in real life?
-
Never saw Monster Squad apparently. But Night of the Creeps rocked hard.
-
you did-don't even THINK about squelching on that one!
i wanna touch it!
i'll buy you like 34 handjobs!
-
So fucking psyched. Also, does anybody have a link to the script online?
-
And Ghoulies II. Just kidding. Ghoulies was horrible - even at 12.
-
Mummy came in my house. Oh Eugene... This is great news. Now I can retire the video and watch this on Halloween, along with Halloween of course...Oh I alphabatize my movies as well. It makes it easier to find what I am looking for. Sue me...

All apologies to people who only get their news here!!!
by cyberbeavis1326
Sorry for busting balls, but full specs were announced last friday. I read it first on DVDtalk.com. For people to get there news only here. Maybe you should try to venture to other sites once in awhile. If I would have known it would have been late here. Maybe I should have clued AICN last weekend then. Maybe they would have had this story up Monday. I was only shocked AICN got on the ball so late seeing how much they adore this film.
-
Interesting enough, Evil Ed and Married with Children chick are also in Fraternity Vacation (with Tim Robbins!), the greatest 80s B Movie of all time (Fright Night is the greatest 80s Horror Movie of all time)
-
Still, great news!!
-
hell yeh, i love monster squad
-
and Roddy McDowell was gay...
-
Give me the amulet...! http://amuletyoubitch.ytmnd.com/

dance until your feet fall off.
thats the greatest montage song ever written.
the best rap ever written is also in this movie at the end. -
If this and Night of the Creeps make it to DVD, Jesus and Buddha have officially teamed up for a Tag team miracle.
-
This almost makes up for the Grindhouse fuck-about us United UK cats've been thwacked with. www.mondoirlando.com
-
Before porn, there were monsters.
-
HA! Great! SOmeone else is crying for the same film on dvd as I!!!!! That is like the last overlooked classic I NEED on dvd.
And yeah...Ashley Bank is a hottie. I met her last February at said horror convention. I am not a guy that puts his arms around any celebs...just feels like Im not worthy enough...but I felt I had to here, and I ended up smacking her in the ass with my clumsy self! It was a GREAT day! -
Alright. This is exciting. I can now throw away the shitty transfer I made from my VHS copy.
-
Because of that movie I always started carrying around a piece of garlic pizza wrapped in tin foil in my jacket in case I run into any Draculas (and to remind myself I have an eating problem).
-
vanished for a while... Thanks chrth!
-
... I vanished for a while too...
-
Please post some pics of the Amulet!
Been wanting to make a replica for years!
Oh and to answer a previous talk backer, I've looked forever and I can't find the screen play anywhere, love to see the original version! -

What Happened to Stuart Gordon's "From Beyond" DVD?
by the partyslammer
Nice to see Monster Squad getting a delux dvd release. Long overdue, imo. I can finally toss my old full screen laserdisc.
However, wtf has been going on with the dvd release of "From Beyond?!?" I heard it was supposed to come out last June '06 in full, uncut glory and nothing..... I have the German dvd, but I want uncut Jeffery Combs brain sucking action NOW! -
...on DVD - NOW!!!
-
Yeah whoopee fuck, Where the hell is the Poltergeist 25th Anniversary Disc we've been promised for years!??!?
-
...or bills, but who am I kidding? I will probably pick this up while drunk and making a midnight run to walmart. One reservation, perhaps. Will this film lose some of its charm by looking too good? I feel that Killer Klowns From Outer Space kinda lost some of its charm when it was released in a pristine looking transfer. Maybe I'm just a little strange.
-
I love this movie. I'm a huge fan of Fred Dekker. I look forward to him sitting in the director's chair again. I hope they do the same for "Creeps".
-
I've been waiting for this movie for 20 years!
-
How the hell did I miss this? This one is definitely being added to my DVD collection.
-
Where the f$#@ is the 2 disc treatment for RAD???
-
..but where the hell is the DVD/HDVD/Blu-fuckin'Ray of "TILT" starring Brooke Shields and Leif Garrett and "WANDA NEVADA" again with Shields and Peter 'Captain America' Fonda..they dont make em' like this any more
-
RAD, the movie with people on the stunt bmx bikes?
As for Monster Squad, this is awesome. In grade 3 I actually started a little club/gang called the Monster Squad and we had little membership cards and everything. It was lame, but seemed really cool at the time. I saw a downloaded vhs rip of this movie about a year ago and it still rocked.
