See Colonel Samantha Carter Get All Brunetty And Britishy!! STARGATE SG-1 Alumni Take You To SANCTUARY!!

Published at:  May 03, 2007 2:47:46 PM CDT

Merrick again…

…with a glimpse at an interesting new project that’s coming down the pipeline...right away.

On May 14, a series of 15 minute webisodes will debut.

Some Geek-friendly kinda folks are involved. Among them are Martin Wood (a director on both STARGATE series), Damian Kindler (a writer for both STARGATEs, EARTH: FINAL CONFLICT, and more), and Cinematographer James Alfred Menard (with SG-1 for much of its run).

According to a press release, here’s what it’s all about:

Each webisode of Sanctuary follows the exploits of Dr. Helen Magnus (Amanda Tapping) as she seeks out all manner of terrifying and monstrous creatures.

She is aided in her quest by her reluctant protégé Will Zimmerman (Robin Dunne, Dawson’s Creek, The Big Hit,
Species 3
) and her intrepid, if somewhat reckless, daughter Ashley (Emilie Ullerup , Battlestar Galactica).

Together they are drawn into a frightening and mysterious world populated by beings that defy explanation. Fusing stunning visual effects, video game technology and cutting edge Web design, Sanctuary takes the viewer into a thrilling world where science meets the supernatural.

This fictional online universe fills the void left by traditional network television by providing multiple High Definition resolutions, immersive interaction and direct communication between the viewer and the Sanctuary
creative team.

Five minutes of preview footage has been posted.

It features Amanda Tapping (as hard as I try, I just can’t shake my crush on her) with dark hair (thus intensifying my Amanda Tapping crush – I’m totally a brunette kinda guy) and struggling with a British accent.

While I'm not 100% blown away by this footage, there are a few nice/cool moments (definitely enough to make me curious about watching some full-length episodes), and I find the overall concept/potential of webisode storytelling most intriguing.

And, yes, I’ve worked for a while trying to come up with a LOGAN’S RUN “Sanctuary” joke...but couldn’t.

Understanding that there are no true original ideas left in most media, was I the only one who got a 'Torchwood' vibe off this?

i actually thought this was a clever pun and the series involved rescuing art from... something, possibly nazis with chisels and paintstripper. then i read the article and remembered i already knew about this project and herc is just a sausagefingers.

Seems like a good fit for XBox live and Apple TV

    by iaidoka

Kinda hoping someone from the production team of this project reads this and makes the webisodes available on Xbox live and through ITunes for Apple TV. This would be an ideal way to reach a relatively broad audience and would allow potential viewers to watch these episodes on our big screens in hd.

strange to hear her with a british accent, and yes to the above very dr who and sin city.

    by mr_x

they'll make sheloads of money, this is going out to everyone at the sametime. hook everyone up for free eps, and then charge when you got them hooked. limited the amount of torrents, and you're up and running very nitin sawneyesqe intos. groovy.

    Not bad

    by billy goat

The voiceover makes it sound like there will be non-human good guys, which I always like to see. Nice prosthetics work, but the CG is crap. When will they learn that "Fusing stunning visual effects and video game technology" is a contradiction in terms? The point is (or should be) to make the effects NOT look like a video game. Sheesh. Otherwise, if the writing is good and the world is self-consistent, I'm there.

    darquelyte: Yes, technically, but...

    by mustang_dvs

She grew up in Canada, which is pretty obvious from her speech pattern and accent in Stargate. (I'll admit, I did look it up on Wikipedia to confirm my suspicion.)Personally, I've never understood the fanboi obsession with Samantha Carter, but I'd wager it's rooted in SG-1's Showtime start and rare bit of nudity, which gave GateGeeks everlasting hope for a regularly topless SG team member. As for Sanctuary -- I'd disagree with Billy Goat; I've seen video games that were more convincing. Conceptually, it's interesting, but the webisode format means a tiny budget, which looks to have mostly been spent on prosthetics (thankfully). CGI sets are fine, so long as the greenscreen process is done carefully and the lighting is matched -- this sample doesn't lead me to think that the digital matting is being done carefully or that there is any care in considering the lighting as shot, when creating the backgrounds.

    @mustang . . .

    by skidmarkedundies

I don't think they were thinking about matching the lighting. I think the mix-match was intentional.

    Definite torchwood vibe

    by frodofraggins

But more interesting than what I've seen of torchwood. Definite similarity in tone and visual style, like the overhead shots of the city. I agree some of the CGI is crap. If AICN reminds me of this when they start showing full eps I'll probably check it out. Otherwise, I'm not intrigued enough to remember on my own.

    BABE SAPIEN!

    by tomthumbstallywhacker

Anyone else spot that? or was it just me? This just seems like a big melting pot of other show's ideas/ concepts and that was nowhere near a British accent. Still, interesting idea, especially if we get hot topless fishy action!

as much as i like the idea and the delivery concept.... it looked very low budget... far from 'broadcast quality'... looked like it was shot on mini dv....looked like some really cheap rendering... looked like a high end student film...and i should know, i am one.

    The Accent and The Hair

    by ravenkai

I just wanted to add my two cents worth on this. First of all, how many times have you changed the way you talk over the years based on how where you are living, who you are hanging out with and where you work? We don't do it on purpose, we just do. If you live in the northern part of the country and move south, you are recognized as different by your speech. Over time, you begin to adapt to the ‘local lingo’. If you then moved BACK to where you started, your speech patterns would once again set you apart because our experiences become a permanent part of who we are. Now, imagine moving around the WORLD for 157 years. How would you sound after being exposed to hundreds of thousands of different dialects? Several fans from UK found the accent completely believable and could recognize different ‘regional’ inflections. As for the hair, there is lots of speculation about that. She has been shown with several different hair styles and colors, based on time period. Think of “The Highlander” TV series. Duncan had to change identities every few decades to hide his immortality. Helen Magnus has most likely done something similar, considering her 157 years on the Earth. Who knows how long before she changes it again; Maybe next week or maybe not for another decade. I guess you could say I’ve already ‘drunk the Kool-Aid’. ;-)
