WTF?! Martin Freeman Is Starring As Rembrandt For Peter Greenaway?!

Published at:  May 01, 2007 5:04:31 AM CDT

Hey, everyone. ”Moriarty” here.

Okay, this one just freaks me out. Martin Freeman strikes me as a very good actor. So far, THE OFFICE is really where I best know him from, but I quite liked his work in HITCHHIKER’S GUIDE and BREAKING & ENTERING as well. I think he could be someone huge and successful.

That’s why I’m fascinated to see him take an unexpected left turn like this. Peter Greenaway? Mr. PILLOW BOOK? Mr. COOK THE THIEF HIS WIFE & HER LOVER? Is this really the DROWNING BY NUMBERS guy? Making a Rembrandt conspiracy film starring Martin Freeman?

I’m sooooooooo seeing this.

A little promotional trailer for Greenaway's new picture on Rembrandt titled Nightwatching is up. It looks promising. Fantastic bits of the score at the end. Interestingly enough, the composer info is being kept a bit of a secret. Some rumors are it is Nyman. Great news if it is. Now if we could just see this film at the Paramount. |||||| K

    It's the Rembrandt Code

    by snappy

Is it just me, or does the idea of an artist embedding hidden messages in his paintings sound just a tad familiar? In the end it turns out that Rembrandt is really part of the Merovingian (sp?) dynasty and lives on a Rose Line. Or not.

    Fantastic!

It's about time someone took on Rembrandt again. He was a fascinating (and my absolute favorite) artist whose impact and ability still resound today. His lifestyle and social attitudes helped define the bohemian aesthetic. I can't wait to see this. Also, I wish every movie preview site were as rich in information as this one is. Greenaway's essay alone is enough to make me want to see his film, let alone the "trailer".

Hey it DOES sound great. Freeman rules (he should play Bilbo) and he does look like Rembrant now that I think of it. Plus, another Nyman score for my collection!

    I'm in this...

    by welshjohnnyboy

Filmed this in Llandeilo, up in the wilds of wales last November.

Bloody awful weather, wind, rain, etc.

Got so wet that when I got changed, the dye from my underwear had ran right down my legs.
Money was crap, but they looked after us well. Only production where they kept a late supper for us, and provided wine and beer.

Greenaway was very nice - he took time to talk to all of us background, the production design was gorgeous, and Martin Freeman definitely looked and acted the part.
Even if he did keep falling over in the mud...

Interesting multi-national crew, nattering away in five or six languages.

Looking forward to seeing all of us in our well-disguised wellies and long johns!

One guess as to why Freeman took that job!?

    by workshed

MARTIN FREEMAN GOTTA EAT PUSSY..! Actually, in all honesty i thought the trailer veered from the ridiculous to the sublime - and that's Greenaway in a nutshell. I'll never forget the first time i saw 'The Cook...'. I went straight back in for a second helping and i Nightwatching is anywhere near that we're in for a treat. Welcome back , Mr.Greenaway. Cinema just isn't the same without the mad bugger.

    by legokenobi

being an avid lover of art history, when i first read the synopsis i thought, "well, that would be pretty cool..." but after reading greenaway's full statement on that blog page (bottom right corner), i am REALLY interested in seeing this. i've studied that painting, but i never had any clue so much was hidden and possibly going on in it. that tied to the speculation about rembrandt's life? totally fascinating. i'm in -- when does this come out again?

    by beamish13

I absolutely adore Greenaway's work. "The Falls" is still the best pseudo-documentary since Peter Watkins' "Privilege", and "Zed", "Baby of Macon", and "Draughtsman's Contract" are all favorites of mine.

    by evil hobbit

..well, I just don't like him. Look at that trailer, the only interesting thing is Martin playing Rembrandt, for the rest it looks extremely boring. I mean, it's as if they filmed a stageplay. They got a great historical person here that desererves a great historical film. Why approach it so minimalistic and boring? I hate it. (note; personal taste of course ;-))

my god greenaway is a mad genius

    by occula

he literally makes art out of film. like, molds it with his hands. there were moments in that crazy trailer where i felt i was back at the rijksmuseum, standing in front of that goddamned painting!

Greenaway is about one step above Ken Russell.

    by mosquito march

I've never understood the attraction to this guy's stuff. THE COOK... was gorgeous to look at, but it possessed no real human value to me, and specimens like PILLOW BOOK did nothing to change my impression. I think he just enjoys punishing his characters and making an audience feel as uncomfortable as possible, and the older I get, the less time I have for that kind of shit. I don't demand happy endings, but I need to feel that the director isn't just getting off on making me feel bad. Cinematic nihilism may pack an immediate punch, but what good is it if nobody feels moved enough to go back and revisit your film?

sounds like a great idea for a film. and, i can't wait to see it. i love pillow book. but, and this is my major problem, why do these dutch sound ENGLISH? and not just ENGLISH, but PROPER ENGLISH!? that's a bit daffy, to me...

Why didn't the Tulse Luper films didn't get US release?

    by demosthenes2

I believe the critical reception was mixed, but it certainly sounded original, and you'd think it could at least get a DVD release here. Greenaway's films only work half the time, but at least he's trying to expand cinematic language, and we don't have many of those filmmakers anymore.

I guess we'll be seeing Freeman's penis then...

well, it certainly LOOKS like a Greenaway film... he's always loved those posed, painting-like compositions... only natural for him to do a film about one...

Love Rembrandt and love Freeman, so this is tempting. On the other hand I saw "Pillow Book" years ago and it left me kind of cold. It was gorgeous, but left almost no other impressions, postitve or negative. (I do remember a guy had words written on his tongue, though.)

Yes, but will he play BILBO in the HOBBIT?

    by drath

And will that guy at New Line die so Peter Jackson can make the movie? No wait, that's wrong to wish that. Can he have a stroke and be replaced because he can't work anymore? I'm sure he's got enough money to afford good caregivers and still have a better quality of life than most of the rest of the world. Peter Jackson must make the Hobbit!!! Doom upon those who try to prevent it!!! I have nothing more constructive to add.

    Greenaway once said...

    by maniaq

...that films should be revisited from time to time and are better appreciated on subsequent viewings - like a book or a painting, or music. He couldn't understand why people would decide once they've seen a film they don't need to see it again, unlike what's on the pop charts or even on tv...

I always admired him for that...
