Neil Gaiman's STARDUST optioned by...
Received this scoop from a rather tempting character named Desire. I just felt this craving urge to pass it along to you, and the last thing Desire told me was that (it's a strange entity so I don't know the proper pronoun) was creating the desire in Jon Peters to give the rights to SANDMAN back to Neil, on the idea that in 10 years he'll receive the rights to the TELETUBBIES for feature film possibilities with Anne Heche as the purple one.... Let's hope...
STARDUST, which is a novel by Neil Gaiman [out now from Avon Books (and out in a
much harder to find illustrated edition by Charles Vess from DC Comics)]
has been optioned to Miramax films.
It's a fairy story for adults, about a young man who promises the girl he's
in love with that he will bring her back a fallen star, a journey that
takes him rather further than he expects.
Gaiman will be writing it, and Executive Producing it. At this point they have no
idea whether it'll be for Miramax or for Dimension.
hope this is of interest
desire.

What do you guys think, should Sandman be put on screen? I read the script from Drew
-
The script for Sandman was horrible. It was good for a laugh and would have made a nice skit for superhero movies. By the way Stardust was great. It was hardly a comic book though. It was more of an illustrated storybook for adults. It was released in four parts and was $5.95 each. I'm not sure if it was collected into one hardcover or paperback though.
-
Stardust is available in a rather neat hardcover collection from either Vertigo/DC in the States or Titan (?) in the UK.
Amazon claim to have copies in stock, but they don't!
Well worth searching out a copy though; Charles Vess's illustrations are beautiful. -
Check out Killing Zoe auteur Roger Avary's script for Sandman, commisioned and then rejected by Jon Peters, over at his site www.avary.com . It's a fascinating, moody read (and that's coming from someone who's never read the comic).
-
I would love to see Stardust done correctly, and with Neil having so much control, I think it's possible. Stardust was collected in a beautiful hardcover edition. The reason it's so hard to find is because DC messed up and only did a run of 5000 copies. This makes it not only a beautiful book, but also a collector's item, so there you go. Neil mentioned this at a con, by the way. At another reading I attended, Neil was giving some details of the Sandman script as it stands right now (over which he has no control). It is proof that there is evil in the world--it's that bad. I'm of the opinion that the Sandman is one of those things that should stay in the realm of the printed word and picture and should never make it to the silver screen. There are so many ways in which it could be fucked up, and the story is entirely too intricate to be simplified into a two-hour special effects horror of a spectacle. Or so I say, heh.

Hey, I went to Roger Avary's site and couldn't find any 'Sandman' script. Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh...!!!
-
I agree with Epsilon that SANDMAN is one of those works that a movie simply will never do justice to -- it's so complex and subtly beautiful that ANY movie version, however lovingly and carefully done, is still going to have to leave out huge chunks of the good stuff. And certainly the Jon Peters version should be burned, preferably with a big stake in the middle with Jon Peters thereupon. But STARDUST is a whole different kind of story -- it's a wonderful, funny, romantic, LINEAR, exciting fairytale that I think would translate into an excellent movie! Especially if they got Neil to write the screenplay -- but then, that goes without saying.

Stardust is very good. Try to get the illustrated version, it's beautiful. I have the single issues (all the single issues of Sandman as well - I like it better that way for some reason) and its
a lovely story with just enough bite in it.
I don't know about having a Sandman movie. I don't trust anyone but Gaiman at the helm, and maybe not even then. I just don't think even with the tech. it would translate well.. it's all about stories, and the power of stories, and of course dreams and the mythological/religious/psychological aspects involved, and I don't know if the movie can cover all the material it would need to without losing the audience (not to mention the backing).
Stardust would make a neat movie.
I'd like to see Gaiman make an original screenplay. Even just take one of his short stories (Smoke&Mirrors) and expand on it.
Something like that. -
can be found at http://www.wordplayer.com/archives/SANDMAN.intro.html and http://www.avary.com/HOMESTUFF/sandman7-10-96.html. I don't know which one the drew's one is, but judging by Lane's "empassioned" response (tee hee) it's probably the "final" one which Neil saw and nearly vomited at. These are two of the rejected ones, which aren't too shabby.

sorry that isn't a link, but I don't quite know how to make it active. anyway, that address is a specialty page for DreamHaven Books and Comics in Minnesota. They do all sorts of sci-fi and fantasy, but they also specialize in neilstuff, and since he lives in the area, they also have a good deal of signed comics and books. they have the original, illustrated stardust issues, three-quarters of the way down the page, under "comics". about $5.95 per issue. that's where i got mine.
anyway, enough plugging.
stardust will be cool on the screen. i don't think it is one of neil's more-compelling stories, but as a poster said above, it is linear and pleasing to read, so the transition to script shouldn't be difficult.
in script 101, they always said that a film script is usually just an outline that producers and directors interpret in their own way, but if neil is exec-producing this as well as script, it should be great.
can't wait for it.
BTW, I am unable to find these sites that feature scripts for upcoming movies, and i'd love to read some. does anyone have any URLs to follow? please respond to my personal email address --

thanks. -
If indeed Jon Peters has his nefarious way with the Sandman project, and the film gets made, I suggest a full boycott by fans of the comic. If those who love Gaiman's work rally around the idea of keeping the work untainted, perhaps we can send a message to Warner Bros. that we will no longer allow fine works of art to be so visciously raped.
-
Anyone know when they plan to start this?
-
Signed copies of the hardcover "Stardust" collection are available, as stated above, at DreamHaven. The web addy is www.visi.com/~dreamhvn and the mail order phone number is 612-823-6070. There's tons of Gaiman stuff, check it out!
