AICN EXCLUSIVE! A New RATATOUILLE Podcast Debuts Here, All About Patton Oswalt!

Published at:  Apr 30, 2007 2:13:43 PM CDT

I’ve known Patton Oswalt for a while now. It started when I went with a friend to see Aimee Mann and Michael Penn at the Henry Ford Theater. Patton was the opening act for them, and the emcee for the entire evening, and the next day, I wrote a bit about that evening here on the site. I got an e-mail from Patton, and we started chatting back and forth. We have the kinds of schedules where we may go six or eight months without really bumping into each other, but I would consider him a friend.

He’s one of the busiest guys I know as a writer these days, so I always assume it’s a writing project that’s got him buried when he drops off the radar. When the first RATATOUILLE trailer premiered and I heard the voice of Remy, the main character, I had the phone in my hand before the trailer was even finished. “Holy shit,” I said when he answered, “are you the lead in a Pixar movie?!”

“I’m not sure yet. Maybe?”

He still seemed dazed and amazed by it all when I saw him in San Francisco recently for the Wondercon. I had spent the day before at Pixar, seeing big chunks of the film with Brad Bird, and I had a much better idea by that point of what exactly Patton was doing. The role couldn’t be a better fit for him. He’s one of the most passionate foodies I know. With Patton, a night at the movies must involve a pre-or-post movie meal, and it must be a carefully chosen restaurant. He’s also an animation nerd of the highest order. He can get excited about the technical advances Pixar’s making in this film just as easily as he can get excited about the emotion content of the film.

Today, we’ve got the exclusive premiere of Disney’s latest behind-the-scenes podcast about the making of RATATOUILLE, and it’ll give you a glimpse at how he got involved and what his work in the film is like. I love how Brad Bird picks people in unconventional ways for his films, like with Sarah Vowell on THE INCREDIBLES. All I can say is, if you love Brad’s movies, make sure you’re on the radio a lot. That seems to be one of his favorite ways to discover a voice for his films.

I’ll have more for you on RATATOUILLE and my time at Pixar in the weeks ahead. This is definitely one of the films I’m most excited about this summer, and I think it’s shaping up to be one of Pixar’s most special movies.

it looks like the Aristocats, as good and full of heart

    by pipergates

it has a great vibe, looks like a classic. Only gripe i have about Pixar is that the faces are still looking too much like the ones in toy story: like toys, flat and featureless. I mean I've seen much more interesting character in the faces on the comics that some of the pixar-people are making. I understand it might be difficult to
animate more detailed faces, but they do a lot of really detailed work on everything they animate, why not more on the faces? I've seen a few european ones, like
the german "Gaya" and the norwegian/british "set Willy free"
that actually are better than Pixar and all their resources, in that aspect.

    It looks awesome

    by coursinlarry

There's only one thing that worries me: Janeane Garofalo's French accent. From the little bits I've heard, it sounds...a bit off. I wish she would have just used her normal voice. An out of context American accent is far less distracting than a horrible fake French accent.

We don't need "more detailed" faces in Pixar movies

    by osmosis jones

You go too far down that path and you get the eerie, "photorealistic" mannequins of Final Fantasy and The Polar Express. Keep my Pixar characters " toon-y, please.

    Amen, Osmosis

    by movietool

Keep it stylized, Pixar. To t.piper . . . go back and take a good look at the faces in Toy Story vs. The Incredibles. I won't go into the intricate nature of sub-surface scattering and radiosity (mostly because its way over my head), but if you can't tell how much more "alive" the Pixar characters have gotten over the years, you must be half-blind. Oh, and Mr_Incredible - if Pixar actually has the rights to John Carter of Mars and they make the massive mistake of doing it live-action instead of fully animated . . . I will openly weep. Take "The Incredibles" and turn the abstraction dial three clicks towards "realistic" and we might finally get a 3D animated flick that could be rated PG-13 and people might still go see.

    Congrats to you Patton Oswalt!!!

    by allpowerfulwizardofoz

That was just so fantastic watching that. I could not be happier. One of my favorite stand up guys gets the lead!!! Him and David Cross are prob my two favorite modern day comedians. Great news indeed for Patton who I hope goes onto to major success following this movie. I cannot wait to see this.

    not photorealistic, just more detailed

    by pipergates

i know Pixar has improved, they're starting to look full of life. And the photorealistic style of specially Tom Hank's Polar Express is ugly.dead.creepy...But it shall be interesting to see if Beowulf wont look a whole lot more interesting...not to mention Avatar.I want Pixar to maintain the cartoony style too, just hope they
give their cartoony faces even more depth and personality.

Where's the talkback for the 9 minutes of clips?

    by half vader

Wow. They're just so far ahead of everyone else (yeah I'm gushing and I just don't care). Not only that but technically (or cinematically I guess) they make it look so easy. Pacing, shot selection, blocking, staging, sense of geography, whatever. All flows so smoothly. Gah. There I go...

F Shrek and all that other crud. Brad Bird is an a-mazin' writer and has his shit together. I highly doubt he would put his name on anything that wasn't up to scratch."Use every part of the buffalo"

More detailed? More depth (but still cartoony)?

    by half vader

Download the 1080p version of the 9 minute clip and look at the bit where Linguini is all wet (limp?) and the way the light plays off the pores in his translucent skin. You can't see it so well in the lower rez stuff, but the hirez will knock your socks off. I don't care what anyone says - HD is much better even for 'talking heads', as the more detail and therefore subtleties of facial movement and expression you can see, the more effective and affecting the performance. Anyway, Ratatouille is looking awesome to me.

And thank you to the folks who posted it in HD - Fucking Disney.com seems to think the net is an American thing and doesn't offer that stuff if you live O.S. It's the g-l-o-b-a-l internet, Fuckos! The whole POINT is that you can communicate no matter where you are. I'm almost as annoyed about that as I am excited about this film. Rant over.
