Frank Langella is not a crook... again!

Published at:  Apr 30, 2007 8:23:27 AM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. The movie adaptation of the stage play FROST-NIXON is moving forward, with the original stars in the lead: Michael Sheen (BLOOD DIAMOND) as David Frost and Frank Langella as Richard Nixon.

There have been many rumors circulating as to who was going to fill the roles for the Ron Howard flick (screenplay by the originator of the play and recent writer of both THE QUEEN and LAST KING OF SCOTLAND, Peter Morgan), but in the end they decided if it wasn't broke don't fix it.

The flick takes place post Watergate and covers a series of interviews of Nixon conducted by British Journalist David Frost. Shooting begins this fall.

    I love Langella, but

    by grammaton cleric binks

have no interest in seeing a Richard Nixon movie. Langella was a better Zorra than Banderas too. He kicked Khan's ass.

    Michael Sheen (BLOOD DIAMOND)?

    by mgmax

Surely it's Michael Sheen (THE QUEEN), logically. Even Michael Sheen (UNDERWORLD) would have made some sense, this being AICN.

I could see him pulling this off...

...but Hopkins cast a pretty large shadow over the role.

    Or, more accurately...

    by childe roland

...over the character (weird to call someone who actually lived and was in the public eye for so long a character, but that's what Nixon's become). Hopkins actually made Nison sympathetic. Almost tragic. That ain't easy.

So is this a remake of 'Dave'?

    by canadianlou

Just saying that Frank Langella was awesome in Dave and that he should just remake that...with puppets. Everyone would be a puppet in the remake...except Frank. He would still be Frank...only taller. Not for nothing, but this will probably be a good flick also. Might not be as good a Nixon as Dan Hedeya in 'Dick' or Anthony Hopkins's Nixon in the movie 'Hoffa'.

    Langella as Tricky Dick?

    by boris baddenov

Hmmm ... Frank's too tall, and too intense in his facial expressions. They need a saddlebag-jowled, poker-faced actor to play Nixon. He's long since deceased, but I think Walter Matthau could've pulled it off.

    by purgatori

those are all the same Michael Sheen. I hope that was a joke...but just to be clear. Michael Sheen is one of those great chameleon actors and he's amazing. I don't know how he morphed himself into Lucian in Underworld, but I'm fucking glad he did, cause yum. But yeah..all the same guy.

    by diagnostic

to make this talk back more in line with AICN. Is to talk about how this should get a Sci-Fi style reimagining. Nicki Clyne, or Grace Park, or maybe that Cheerleader what-s-her-face as Frost and maybe a digital transformer as Nixon

    President Logan from 24

    by samuel fulmer

or Kevin Spacey probably would've been a better choice, but I'll take Dracula in the part (since he's actually in the play Frost/Nixon) over Warren (please stay away from movies) Beatty.

It's actually better to not look just like him

    by mgmax

Lane Smith was dead-on as Nixon in the TV movie where he played him, but that was too weird-- you need to be able to accept the character as a character at a certain point, not as a 90% lookalike which keeps drawing your attention to the 10% that's off. Besides the fact that Langella is apparently great in the role on stage, he has exactly the right scary authority to make you believe he was a president, and then to become his own character. (My question is, does the play include Nixon's jovial greeting to Frost before one of the interviews, "So, David, did you do any fornicating this weekend?" What a strange man...)

I'm seeing the play next Friday

    by bungion boy

I've heard pretty much nothing but great things about this play and about Langella and Sheen's performances. I had heard that Warren Beatty was in the running and I think that could have been really interesting as well. But that might just be me missing Warren. I've always been a big Langella fan but I think my favorite things I've seen him do have been on stage. His performance in "Fortune's FooL" a few years ago in New York was incredible. I saw him in "Starting Out in the Evening" at Sundance this year. Not a great film but he was very good in it. Looking forward to the play and the film of this.

Robert Altman's "Secret Honor" with that great character actor Phillip Baker Hall as Nixon? He was supposed to be scary good....Still always a kick to catch Dracula when AMC reruns it. Great 70's hair on Frank......

Grammaton you're right, Langella did make a good Zorro.

Even if his version was a made for TV movie and lifted the exact same Max Steiner score from the classic Tyrone Power Mark of Zorro.

    Another GREAT Zorro,

    by orbots commander

the French actor Alain Delon. They made a sphaggetti western Zorro way back and I remember catching it on TV a couple of times as a kid. Delon's Zorro was actually similar to Banderas' if I recall correctly.
