BoogieGirl looks at FORCES OF NATURE and Oliver Stone's ANY GIVEN SUNDAY

Published at:  Mar 16, 1999 12:57:52 AM CST

The trailers on FORCES OF NATURE have just left me a bit cold... I'll still see it, but gosh... I'm not as excited as I should be... Anyway here's BoogieGirl with news on that and Ollie Stone's next flick...

First time writing in. Just call me Boogie Girl. Two things: I saw the
premiere for "Forces Of Nature" on Friday in L.A. and some rumblings from
Oliver Stone's NFL movie "The League" (A.K.A. "Any Given Sunday.") 1)
"Forces of Nature" was o.k. Ben Affleck looked amazing and showed he could
carry a romantic comedy. Sandra Bullock, who used to really annoy me, was
good, too. Maura Tierny was very whiny and cloying. The bridesmaid, whose
name I don't remember, was the best though. She was your typical bitchy
girl, and trust me I know a lot of girls like her! There were actually some
very funny scenes, like when Ben Affleck has to strip at a gay club. The
audience was laughing hysterically. But, as usual, the movie was very
inconsistent and unrealistic. I mean no one would hold a wedding if a
hurricane was coming. I live in Miami and when hurricanes come, the whole
town boards up. In the movie, they actually try and go through with the
wedding in the midst of the storm. That would never happen. But the worst
was the ending. I don't mean to spoil it for anyone, but he decides to stay
with boring Maura Tierny over wild and spunky Sandra Bullock. What a tease!
The whole movie flirts with the chemistry between Bullock and Afleck and
really shows Tierny in a boring light. And then suddenly, he falls back in
love with her because she's in a wedding dress and is stranded on a
balcony. I didn't find it believable. Or maybe I just wanted to see him
with the free spirit. 2) As for the skinny on Oliver Stone's movie filming
in Miami, Oliver told me it is probably the most difficult movie he has
ever made. Tension is very high on the set due to the long hours and
difficult shoots. A lot of the staff has gotten fired, too. In fact, about
3 weeks ago, a fight broke out between two of the co-stars: LL Cool J and
Jamie Foxx. Foxx actually had to go to the hospital as a result of the
fracas. And as to the published reports about Cameron Diaz and Oliver Stone
being romantically involved in the National Enquirer, Diaz has been linked
with Jared Leto and Ed Norton. But, everyone on the set has been partying
it up at places like Joia, Bar Room, The Living Room, Groove Jet and
Tantra. And when this movie is released it is going to piss off a lot of
people in the NFL!!!!!!

I readily admit that knowing how Forces of nature ends before I see it on video a zillion years from now is not going to ruin my life ... but c'mon, man ... isn't that about the 20th time this year we got spoilers with no warning? As for Maura Tierney, I must admit that I fail to see why anybody gives that gal continuing film work. It's funny, when somebody's nice in real life, I think it shows even in the characters they play (as I assume Sandy is in real life), and helps with the audience liking their character ... and then for the dark side of that coin, you have ... er ... uh ... "Dear Ms. Tierney."

    THE STONEMEISTER

    by los gordos

Sure one way of looking at it is that Stone beats you over the head with his messages, but at least he has a point of view and actually feels something for the characters and subjects he deals with. That's more than I can say for most American fimmakers working today (yes of course there are exceptions), especially the ones trying to convey a message of some kind (in this case no exceptions... well Spike Lee I forgot about him, but he's openly stated that Mr.Stone is a big influence on him). Stones films are packed to the gills with visceral emotion and intensity. In a landscape littered with throwaway indie films that seem more like mainstream calling cards for washed out thrilers and by the numbers romantic comedies Stone does things HIS way and he doesn't hold back. The man said it best himself -- why should all films be the same, in painting there's baroque, surreal, realist etc. Why should film be held to a certain level of realism and restraint. But doesn't matter anyway it seems like the people who should be getting the "message" just don't get it anyway no matter how blatant he makes it (NBK anyone). The thing that differentiates Stone's message pictures from others is that they pack a whallop, not mention they have a ground-breaking visual style that puts most movies in general to shame. Stone paints his pictures with broad strokes, but he paints them with incredible passion. I, for one, will see anything he directs.

    Affleck Has Force

    by tommyd

I too saw the Forces of Nature the other night, not by my own free will. I hate to be critical of actors but normally I come out of an Affleck movie comparing him to Reeves, but hell he was awsome. The cinematography combined with two fantastic performances make this one of the better romantic comedies. Not once does it slow down. You can travel with this movie from beginning to end without ever wondering what time it is...awsome thanks to Affleck and Bullock.

LL Cool J against Jamie Foxx, odds are that Jamie started it. Ladies love cool james. Boogie girl has a future on the E! gossip show. As for this film pissing the NFL off, I heard that alot of current and former NFL players are in the film as players on the team. Hey, does Cameron Diaz play the female kicker tomboy, with a heart of gold? What happened to Matt Dillon and Cameron Diaz together? I guess it wasnt a hoot being with the Flamingo Kid.

Why wouldn't a guy go back with the girl he loves?

    by tides

Come on now, anyone ever hear of a last fling. Sure, one girl is fun and flighty and you've had a great TWO DAYS with her, but what about the love in the bottom of your soul you feel for the other one? Movies always create a whirlwind romance that supercedes an old lover and I think the whole formula is getting tired. Sure, everyone wants to be swept away by romance and know that the person they are with is "the one",and movies always show the wild and wacky side of romance but I think I would rather marry my best friend than a good lay.

    Thank God!

    by pope buck 1

Someone finally dared to speak the truth about Oliver Stone! Thank you! Thank you! Yes, his movies are "powerful" and "visceral" and "pack a wallop." So does a sledgehammer blow to the skull, but I wouldn't pay $7 for one of those, either. GOD he drives me insane. And his definition of "artistic filmmaking" is basically, "every shot must be UPSIDE DOWN! Through a GREEN FILTER! On 8 MILLIMETER film! In BIZARRE close-ups at DISTURBING angles! In SPLIT SCREEN! With COOL unrelated sound effects to give it more OOMPH! LOOK AT MY CAMERA, YOU FOOLS, LOOK AT IT!!!" Ken Russell on his worst days was never this self-indulgent! And it's not enough that he has to pound whatever simplistic message into your head over and over again. He insists on casting himself -- oh, sorry, his leading man -- as the One True Crusader for Goodness and Right and Truth, and anyone who disagrees with him in the slightest must be On The Side Of Evil. Hell, I agree with most of his politics, but he still annoys the hell out of me. You want real artistic filmmaking? Go watch Jane Campion, or any number of others. You want political filmmaking that has a serious viewpoint and yet manages not to sound like a Primer for the Politically Retarded? Go watch John Sayles or Michael Moore or Barbara Kopple or Debra Chasnoff. They may not be as good at creating controversy and PR (well, except maybe Michael Moore), but I'll take their work over Stone's any day. And now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go lie down.

    Why Oliver Stone bugs me

    by lloyd dobler

Alright, I used to have no problem with Stone movies. Platoon was great, and so was Wall Street. Hell, JFK is one of my favorites. But then he made Natural Born Killers, and I think he just went down hill. It was around this point he started to think that he was the genius so many people said he was. So to prove it, he starts to come in with all the weird, and pointless, camera angles. The changing from black and white to color, FOR NO REASON. Close ups on peoples nose hair, TO CONVEY NO MEANING AT ALL. It was like he was trying to be like Sam Raimi, pre A Simple Plan. Now his films just bug the hell out of me, and give me a headache. Even Nixon was such a pain in the ass to sit through, because he filmed it like Natural Born Killers. What the fuck, it's Nixon for god's sake. Now I will go see his new one, because Cameron Diaz is in it, and Oliver does have a way of getting his leading ladies to strip, but that will be the only reason.

    A) SPOILER MUCH? and B) That Stone guy

    by lynnbracken

Yes, another vote on POST A SPOILER WARNING PLEASE! And future writers of articles for this site - watch it, dammit. Sheesh.
And secondly - on to Mr. Stone. It seems I like every other film of his. Or so. I liked Wall Street and Platoon a lot. JFK pissed me off because I'm not really interested in OS's personal vision of history. It irritated me that young would see that movie and think that's what really happened. I liked Natural Born Killers a lot, because of it's comments on society etc and visual images. It was just very entertaining. However, based on years of reading various articles and seeing his films, I just have a general suspicious feeling about him. I look forward to hearing any early reviews of this movie. I can't remember if it's time to like one, or dislike one.

    Oswald was a magician

    by l'auteur

Oh NO! Now I know how a Bullock/Affleck vehicle will end! I agree with the principle that a spoiler warning should be there but with this movie, who fucking cares? Talk about my two least favorite movie stars! In the same damn movie too! WHAT A NIGHTMARE! And people actually pay for that? yikes. anyway, in response to Gweilo who said that "there is very credible evidence that Oswald acted alone" i say: credible to who?? Stone might have made up many facts in JFK but he did not make up the Magic Bullet Theory or the Zapruder film. On the Z film, it is practically proven that bullets struck JFK from multiple angles (hence, that would make Oswald's bullet "magic"). And why would a lone crazy be assassinated himself that very night by hitman, Jack Ruby? The government's story of JFK's death is complete bullshit. Im not an X-file paranoid lune, i dont believe that EVERYTHING is a conspiracy, but this is. Some might say that Stone beats his messages a little too hard, but look at it this way: at the end of JFK, Costner gives his closing statements, his big speech. He looks directly at the camera and says "It's up to you." This might be over-obvious in terms of "statement" but did anyone listen? Yeah, some listened but it was really only the people who already believed it was a conspiracy. Those who think Oswald acted alone before the film still do, as proven by Gweilo. I think JFK is a hugely flawed film, like all of Stone's work. I think it would have been perfect if he could have kept the message (Its up to us to care) and kept the suspense (Stone's style worked brilliantly in this aspect) but left out the bullshit. The bullshit was what let the liars (aka, the government) say "Well JFK (the movie) was just fantasy. Those facts cant be proven so the 'fact' remains that Oswald acted alone." If Stone had made the film half the length, focused only on the known facts, he could have caused a riot (I know Costner's speech made me want to storm the White House and kick some ass!). Stone's indulgence in historical "fact" was the only thing that kept JFK from being a revolutionary masterpiece (maybe THIS film should be remade!).

    JFK...

    by sgallag600

I don't know if anyone is interested in reading even more about the assassination, but a truly great book about the subject (and one that really does a good job at showing that Oswald likely did the deed) is Gerald Posner's "Case Closed". It might not change your mind, but it's conclusions are certainly more plausible than those of the Warren Commission or Oliver Stone...

I know that has precious little to do with movies, but since we seem to have gotten off on this "JFK: Fact or Fiction?" tangent, I figured my $.02 on this subject would be appropriate...

Look at L'Autuer and LaneMyers and the rest of the regulars! They post all the time, usually! Do you honestly think that anyone could be that opinionated in real life? No. If they were, they would have no friends, no jobs, no families, nothing. (Sometimes I wonder about the jobs and friends thing, because they do post a lot.) But, they do post and I like reading their posts because they entertain my fat, gelatious ass! I have no life! I haven't been laid since 1989! I do not care! I'm indifferent to what people would call a 'normal life' because I have the cash to do whatever the fuck I want and if I want to spend the day, beached in my super comfy lazy-boy, searching for spoilers and typing out reams of shit that no one will ever care about or take seriously, then I will and I will do it, why? Because I want to!!! Because I like to!!! I love spoilers and I'll tell you one you may not know! You know THE MATRIX? Keanu dies at the end! HAHAHAHAAAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAA!!!!

    NBK

    by glitterstar180

I wonder if the reason that so many film geeks reject NBK is because OS makes the point that there _is_ such a thing as too much tv, movies, tabloids, etc. Now before you all get your panties in a bunch, let me say this- I do agree that Wall Street wasn't that great (hell, I almost walked out of U-Turn but stayed out of deference to my husband) but I believe that NBK, JFK and Nixon were incredible examples of how a filmmaker can take snapshots of the American pysche and preserve them forever. If AGS is a lot like U-Turn though, I just might give up on Stone.

Look here you fat ass. I don't really give a damn about Forces of Nature that much. (My Girlfriend is going to drag me too it, but it's not like I cared.) But the Matrix? That looks like a kick ass movie, that I think most of us wanted to be surprised about. And you give away the ending? You fucking bastard. Why the fuck are you on this sight? You obviously don't like movies. If you did, then you would appreciate that in enjoying a film, you also have ot let it surprise you. I wouldn't have appreciated Citizen Kane nearly as much if I had known what Rosebud was. Or the truth about Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker. My point is, that if you truly enjoy movies, than shut the Fuck up about spoilers until somebody asks your fat ass.

I haven't seen the movie, but the script is in my hands. Wanna know how Lawrence Fishburne manages to stay aware? Wanna know how all those really cool effects take place? Wanna know why everything freezes in the middle of a scene? Wanna know how they wage war against something that constantly controls them? You see? Actually I don't have the script. I don't know what happens at the end, I have no idea how any of those things happen and the thing about the matrix? I heard it from Cinescape. Fake spoilers, kids. by savannahman

I live in the city where the majority of Forces Of Nature was filmed last summer (Savannah, Georgia), and have been eagerly awaiting this film. Even if it's a piece of crap, I still want to see the city on the big screen. That and Travolta's new flick, "The General's Daughter", which comes out in June were filmed in Savannah last summer...

But I'd like to thank that reviewer for spoiling the film. Two words, please...SPOILER SPACE!!! From now on, I wish and hope that others can adhere to those two words, just out of decent respect and human kindness. Not too much to ask, I don't think.

Things That Might Be Construed As Spoilers

    by mrbeaks

    1) At the end of THE MATRIX, credits roll and music is played. 2) The Fish does indeed save Pittsburgh at the end of THE FISH THAT SAVED PITTSBURGH. 3) Contrary to the hopes and prayers of eternally scarred moviegoers, Steve Guttenberg never dies at the end of any POLICE ACADEMY movies. 4) Mr. Guttenberg then goes on to disappoint by not dying in any subsequent films, while staying quite healthy in real life. 5) THE MYTH OF FINGERPRINTS completes its entire running time without ever justifying one of filmdom's most irritatingly awful titles. 5) THE MYTH OF FINGERPRINTS also ends sans the demise of Noah Wyle. 6) PULP FICTION ends at the midpoint of the story; thus, leaving many viewers irate at the fact that the actual ending was "spoiled" at the conclusion of the second episode. 7) The original theatrical cut of THE ABYSS ends as a tidy little metaphor for love, but irritates those who just came to gawk at nifty lookin' aliens. 8) These same viewers find depth and subtlety in the work of Oliver Stone, while others get headaches. 9) I end this post without ever having come in spitting distance of an actual point. 10) I get flamed endlessly in the following posts, while receiving a couple of e-mails inquiring as to what drugs I might be taking.

Oliver Stone is many things. For better or for worse, but at least his films are uncompromising. Anyway, I think one of the creepiest things he has ever shot (including seizure and the script to Midnight Express) is the scene between Anthony Hopkin's Nixon and Sam Waterston as Richard Helms making a terrifying statement using Yeats' poem "The Second Coming." Creepy!

    Spoilers and Stone

    by idaho

First a little tidbit on my views on spoilers. If a movie is good enough, spoilers shouldn't matter - that much. A movie is more than an ending, there usually about 2 hours before the final scene. And those 2 hours are more important than 5 minutes. Now, on Stone, so he beats people over the head with ideas, and if he didn't, many people wouldn't get the message (some still don't). And if he thinks he's a genius, who cares? Hate a movie because it's bad, not because the person who made it is. I think Woody Allen's a bit whacked, but I love his movies. I've rambled enough for now.
