SWEEPS DAY THREE!! BUFFY's Espenson and Petrie Transport J’onn J’onzz To Saturday Morn’s THE BATMAN!!

Published at:  Apr 29, 2007 3:08:57 AM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

Two of my favorite “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” writers, Jane Espenson (“Earshot,” “The Replacement”) and Doug Petrie (“Checkpoint,” “As You Were”), wrote the two-part season finale of “The Batman” airing this Saturday and next.

It introduces (to this version of the Batman) one J’onn J’onzz, Manhunter From Mars!!

It airs here in Los Angeles at 10:30 a.m. Or possibly 11 a.m. You should just check your local listings really.

Herc's pal Jane Espenson has a brainiac comedy-writer boyfriend who wrote a book about "Jeopardy”!! Read the great reviews and buy it!! Jane’s all over chapters 14 and 19!!

Batman and the Manhunter sounds like a good combo. But I hope there's not too much re-invention, which seems to be the trend with The Batman.

... this season of The Batman is supposed to be getting better. Although, since I've never followed it -- I have no idea. Will try to watch for MM, but it makes me nostalgic of the old school pre-Superman Batman Diniverse where, even when Zantana did show up, she didn't do any magic...

    by xanther

I'll be the first to admit it isn't nearly as good as Batman The Animated Series, but I do like how they handle the majority of the characters. And Batgirl Begins was a great season opener last year.

    My buddy Ando wondered why

    by napoleon park

Since "The Batman" pretty much limits itself to the Batman Family Universe, (Unless you consider Robin a "Teen Titans" character) why were they bringing in this character from JLU and Smallboy? J'onn J'onzz, the Martian manhunter, was a long time back-up feature behind bats in Detective Comics, and of course made his first Appearance in the issue of Detective that some people claim is the true start of DC's Silver age (and not the first Flash in Showcase a year or so later). Besides, if Ba... uh, THE Batman exists in a world with super-powered villains, it's not much of a stretch to assume there are other super-powered heroes existing in his world. Honestly, don't we wish all super-hero movies would acknowledge the universes they sprang from? So this is Cool News, thanx for the reminder. And, hey, everyone planning to tape/tivo it, my pal tells me it's going to be a one hour episode, so don't just get half of it.

My guess on the superhero universes..

    by arguendo

I hate when people say this, but I would have to say money. That and continuity.
I would liken it to how Robin was not allowed to appear on Justice League while teen titans was running -- or effectively any Batman character was excluded from Justice League and Teen Titans, as they were prepping for The Batman.
With multiple people buying up the rights for different superheroes in the same universe, it's tricky, because you don't have the right to use them. From what I have seen to date, there isn't that much popular fan lovin' (apologize if you are) for the Martain Manhunter, so I'm guessing no one really plans on making a Martian Manhunter movie in the near future and it's pretty cheap to get the rights to use him. Sure, sure, you can counterpoint me with Green Arrow, but that's not even solid and to be honest is not one of the big ticket characters either.

No batman characters were allowed on Justice League and Teen Titans, as they were hedging against using them in Batman Begins and possible sequels...

    by rokurgepta

seems like I havn't seen a new episode in over a year?

for that matter, what happened to teen titans? Did that show get canceled as well? Other than the movie in which they head to Japan, I don't think I've seen a new Titans episode in over a year either?

i have both shows set to record on tivo, but nothing ever records.... and damn it will the xbox 360, and PS3 drop dramatically in price for godz sake? When does Mario Galaxy come out? and what is the price of rice in China?

Justice League/Justice League Unlimited ended it's phenomenal 5 year (maybe more) run on Cartoon Network with the two part finally of Alive! and Destroyer. In the episodes The Justice League team up with the Legion of Doom to fight a foe that threatens the entire world. The League wants peace. The Legion wants a world to conquer and can't do that if it's destroyed. The best part of the two parter was Superman's cut loose scene in which he states that what we have here is a rare opportunity for me (Superman) to cut loose. I'm tired of always holding back, always afraid I'm going to break something or someone. But you can take it, can't you big guy? What we have here is a rare opportunity for me to cut loose and show you how powerful I really am. (paraphrased)

OK, so both JLU and Teen Titans get cancelled. But JLU merchandise continues to be manufactured and marketed, while Teen Titans merchandise is pretty much dead. Even Superman Returns has a new line of merchandise out. Why no new Teen Titans stuff? I was under the impression that Teen Titans merchadise sold very well.

    by rbatty024

I'll watch it from time to time but I always find myself pulling out my B:TAS DVDs to wash the horendous taste out of my mouth. A twelve year old Poison Ivy? Did a bunch of pedophiles write that episode? There's no drama in the show, virtually no conflict beyond the fight scenes. Oh well, at least Dini is writing Detective Comics now, so I can always look forward to that.

Are you joking? No one has guns on the batman because it's a KIDS show, and gun violence is a no-no on most kids shows.

Also: If it were catering to any agenda, it'd be left wing.

    Setting the record straight....

    by sith-vol

...to answer the above questions, you need look no further than the Justice League Unlimited Season one set. Bruce Timm talks about the "Bat Embargo" and how they were not allowed to use any Batrman characters other than Batman himself as the other series (The Batman) had bought the rights out from under them. So as we already knew, its all about money. Thats why any show with an ensemble cast of superheroes, like JLU, no matter how good it is, is doomed to fail in the end. Just to many hands in the pot all wanting to get paid.

Teen TITanS = teen tit and ass. *** I don;t know about action figures or notebook tablets, but DC is still publishing a "Teen Titans Go!" comic book series based on the animated series continuity and Glen Murakami's character designs. *** JLU wouldn't work without the big three, but every major comic superhero universe has a huge underbelly of obscure characters. JLU did a great job of mining for the characters no one else wanted to license. *** To meander a bit, since I set the VCR to catch The Batman I also watched another episode of what I thought was called "Superboy and the legion of super-heroes", but noticed they repeatedly referred to him as "Superman" on the show. what up with that? anyone?

The Batman & Superboy & Legion should be embarrassed by their efforts thus far. Timm/Dini/McDuffie set the bar and these hacks comes along with their mediocre vision of these characters and cranks out cookie cutter bullshit. Why can't Warners hire the old crew back and just cater to the fanboys & comic geeks who'll gladly shell out the cash (within reason) to buy some real shit as oppose to this uninspired crap. Give the kids their Pokemon and give us back our JLU!

    Superboy/Superman

    by mcvamp

Strange as it sounds, DC does not own the rights to Superboy, only Superman. Since using Superboy would mean paying off the heirs to Seigel & Shuster (sic?) DC ixnayed the Superboy character for the TV series AND killed off the Superboy character in comics continuity. All to save a few bucks owed to the guys that essentially created DC comics. Such is life. And "The Batman" stinks.
