Check it out! First production photo of Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark in IRON MAN!!!

Published at:  Apr 27, 2007 6:20:25 AM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I love this picture. In fact, I've loved everything I've seen out of this production so far. USA Today got the first official still of Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark. Check it out!!!

I love the device in his chest, keeping his heart pumping... I was wondering how they were going to handle this... I'm a little rusty (heh) on my IRON MAN... I think he has been able to live without his suit for a while, some sort of operation that dug out that piece of shrapnel next to his heart, but in the classic comics I always loved that the IRON MAN armor wasn't just something badass and cool to kick evil's ass with, but it was also what was keeping Stark alive. Even when he was out of the costume in the old books, he still had to wear the chest piece... Which can work on the page, but how the hell would they make that work in real life?

I like the solution. Don't know about you, but I'm getting very excited for this flick.

It looks good. I don't understand how the device works (does he have to cut holes in all his vests so it can poke out like that? Or is it built into the vest itself?) but it looks cool and all. I have high hopes for this one, vest-related issues aside.

    Favreau is ...

    by freefinger

... right on the money for choosing Downey for this role. I'm happy to see the movie went to him and not a Burton or Singer or another two time prick who does not respect the character and demolishes everything that has been established that made the hero.I think Favreau will respect the major aspects of Strak/Iron Man and just make it reflect these times. The chest thingy proves that he kept the essential reason why Stark became Iron Man and now we'll just have to wait and see for the rest of the movie.Me like too.

the device is holding the shrapnel in place to keep it from killing him, except in the comics it was part of the armor, like a vest he wore. but seriously, have you ever seen a production still of a man doing nothing that is SO fucking fascinating?

it's just the device that keeps his injured heart alive. Eventually that device is removed, along with the shrapnel, and his original heart is as good as new. I could be wrong, but I don't think he gets a new heart. Perhaps. Maybe.

    Shrapnel

    by bluejack

It wasn't long in the comics before Stark got rid of the shrapnel. Every few years Marvel will bring back the heart issue for drama, but for the most part it's not an issue. It's hard to keep your identity secret when you have a big metal vest under your shirt. Also hard to have Stark be a big playboy and get laid all the time with the vest on. (He's a dog in Marvel comics, he just bagged She-Hulk in her book).

I know I'm probably unawares of just how long they pump, and I know that I have to work all day when their full time job might be lifting weights for a part, but still... and I still resemble Downey a great deal. Downey looks the part, and I don't think the irony of an addict playing an addict is lost on anyone. I respect that they're starting with the grey Iron Man suit, but hope they move up to red/yellow. There was a great plotline in Guardians of the Galaxy about a race known as The Stark. In the future as Earth was being overrun Tony jettisoned his technology into space so it wouldn't fall into wrong hands. The genius didn't think that maybe the people who found it wouldn't be the right hands either, and of course it did. Picture not one, but a whole race of Iron Man known throughout the Galaxy as The Stark.

Here's hoping she proves she is a great Potts. Downey is so money. Perfect casting for me, but I am barely an Iron Man fan. Hope this movie rocks and shows some Hollywood trash how to respect a property whilst taking liberties. Modest liberties. This does not look anything like Iron Man In Name Only. This looks spot fucking on right now and Favreau's interview sure makes me maintain that sentiment. Hurry up May 2008!

And, the more I see of this version, the more it's aligning with what's in my fandom addled brainIron Man has always been thematically deeper and more complex than other comics, Favreau doesn't seem to be shying away from that. It's also been much more tech-heavy than other comics, Favreau seems to be embracing that too.I never thought I'd ever see an Iron Man movie, because I just didn't think enough people cared. But now, not only am I seeing an Iron Man movie, I'm seeing the one very close to the one my brain created many years ago.In short, this kicks ass (although, I'm still not completely crazy about Downey. Maybe because my heart was completely set on Clive Owen)

Since finding out about this movie, I've actually gone back and read some Iron Man comics. Never really got into him as a kid, it was always like "let's just come up with some new gizmo and beat the badguys". Always felt like cheating. (Was anyone ELSE disgusted by Iron Man counteracting Peter's Spider-Sense?) But Downey can be vulnerable and I think that's the key to Iron Man. I mean this is the ONE hero that can be a wimp. He's got ARMOR for that!

Downey is getting a bit over the hill to carry an superhero franchise. He might be fine to play the role now, but I don't know about sequels. That being said, Harrison Ford has made a career out of playing middle-aged action heroes, not to mention Arnie. Downey being the genius he is, I'm sure he can pull off a superhero, but I'm just not sure I want to see him in anything other than offbeat movies/roles. Still, I'm sure he's a far more inspired choice than some alternatives, so I should quit my bitching.

since no one answered your question, this picture is supposed to be in Afghanistan. That's this story's Vietnam. I don't know why I love this pic so much - maybe it's the intensity. Or Downey's look. Funny, I've seen him look muscular before, but usually he looks kinda pasty, but he looks just perfect in this. Lighting and makeup really do make a difference. I was never a huge Iron Man fan either - it's actually only been since Disassembled into Civil War that I ever paid attention to the character. But for some reason, I'm looking forward to this flick more than any other comic adaptation. I think it's the care and the detail being put into it and it seems to not be making the mistakes that you usually see in pre-production with these movies. I hope we won't be disappointed.

If the creators of a comic movie respect the original medium (the comic) the movie can become a film. ("Batman Begins" showed that respect/"Catwoman" did not). There's respect from Fav in this pic alone, so I'm hopeful. As long as Iron Man sports no flames and we don't see his lips, and as long as War Machine doesn't show up as a big gray cloud, I'm cool.

Iron Man Fan - but will this work?

    by strosmer

What a thrilling time for movies. CGI has made anything possible, and it's just amazing to see all the comic book heroes I grew up with coming alive on the big screen in big ways, though I'm not pleased with how most of them turn out. Raimi and Nolan are the only directors who have demonstrated some true reverence for their material. Spider-Man 1 & 2 and Batman Begins are great films that show both the motivations and capabilities of their heroes. I think Bryan Singer failed in that regard with Superman. In Iron Man, I see an opportunity to pull together a high action, character driven film that could rival anything yet released in this genre. It's amazing this character is getting a movie; even more amazing that Downey Jr. is cast as Stark (who'd imagine he'd take on a superhero role at all). I don't know what Favreau has planned beyond the origin formula, but I hope we see him pull off some well-choreographed big action. I expect to see Iron Man flying at high speed over long distances and causing some big damage. My guess is we'll see the grey armor evolve into red and gold by the end of the movie - the logo from the website indicates this will be the case. From what I've seen, I'm psyched. Seems Favreau's at least done adequate research. No doubt Downey Jr. will be great. I think he'll make this film fly if all else is in place. Mandarin is the right choice for the lead off villain. Can't wait for '08. Course '07 looking good too. Let's pray that if Galactus is introduced as a cloud, he does not remain a cloud.

so together and the picture of perfection, meanwhile he was very good at hiding his very real weaknesses. I must say RDJ kind of takes away from the strength of that image a bit because he looks like a weasel, which is kind of what he is known for playing.

If there's one thing the Phantom Menace taught us...

    by kevred

...it's that having the most mind-blowingly amazing and perfect pre-release production stills is no guarantee of movie quality. (God, I can still remember how jaw-droppingly perfect Neeson, McGregor, and Maul looked in those early shots.) That said, though, the shots we've seen so far from this flick look inspiringly dead-on. In some ways I don't think it's all that hard for this to be a really good movie--give us some good armor and some good rip-roaring action, just enough angst but not too much. Don't try to be too clever, don't waste too much time on origin stuff, give us meat & potatoes superhero fun and some characters we root for. Got a good feeling about this so far.

playing "complex characters", which is just a fancy way of saying weasels. If I could cast anyone, it would be Hugh Jackman, of course. But naturally, he can't be every superhero character. Eric Bana probably would've been exceptional. He is more geared toward that heroic archtype of character than Banner (see his Hector in Troy).

    DC has to catch up!

    by thevision

Kevin Feige and Avi Arad were not bullshitting at Comic-Con when they said Marvel Films was going to go all out with first class productions. RDJ building the Gray Armor with rotary pacemaker on his chest- fricking coool! I like Gwyneth but still wish it was Kristina Hendricks as Pepper. Ed Norton signing on for Incredible Hulk is the icing on the cake- due out in '08 or '09? Marvel is scoring big, even mediocre-but fun films-Fantastic Four and Ghost Rider are hits. DC may have Christian Bale and Brandon Routh but that's it, Wonderwoman is in limbo and so is the Flash; I seriously doubt JLA will ever be made-at least not in the way it deserves. DC is treated as the proverbial redheaded stepchild at Warner Bros. I'm betting on Ironman and Hulk to score big so Marvel can have Frank Miller and Zach Snyder reboot Daredevil starring Edward Burns.

    Can Iron Man Breath Life...

    by david19

back into Marvel Pictures? It would seem rather unlikely considering that Iron Man is hardly a top-selling name. Its no secret that Marvels biggest hits so far are Spidey and Xmen, and both movies performed, but with both titles possibly winding down, its no shock that Marvel is trying to keep butts in the seats with their less known characters. I think trying again with the Hulk is a huge risk. I personally liked the Ang Lee one when i first saw it, and even now the filmaking and acting and action are all pretty well done, the big let down being the over-dramatic story. The problem I see with the second-tier characters is that they are giving all these characters to second-rate directors, and that does not bode well for the future of Marvel comics. For me I just cannot get over what I feel are unforgivable changes or additions to these films, one major one being the casting of Jessica Alba as the Invisible Woman. It still bugs me and im not even a FF fan! As soon as I heard that I was totally turned off to that movie, and except for the vague trailer that Ill admit peaks my interest (though I am still waiting to see more positive reviews before I buy a ticket) the moment I heard she saw cast I lost all faith in the producers and director, and the fact that Tim Story is STILL in the chair really worries me. It was obvious from that movie that he is not a good director and i dont see how that could have changed. But now I am hearing three things that show me that maybe Marvel is getting their act together after all, 1:The casting of RDJ, this great little pic, and Favreaus comments so far have shown me that maybe Iron Man will be the movie to really keep Marvel on the map, now that Spideys furure is questionable. It doesnt seem like hardly anyone has bad things to say about this pic and its direction so far, and really the only questionable aspect is Favreau in the chair. I think Iron should be a character grounded more in reality and less in the Mandarin realm, but thats me, but really the question of whether this takes off or not lies in Favreaus ability as a filmaker. So far its looking good. 2:Norton as the Hulk. Ill admit this is odd casting, but I can see it happening and Nortons involvment at the very least is some insurance towards this movie being a success. Again the big "if" is the director. 2:Snyder and Miller doing Daredevil?!!???!!! If that is true..... OH MAN!!!! Daredevil with Snyders directing style I think is a match made in heaven. If this is true, we just might have something else to put up next to our Spidey, Bats, and Xmen DVDs on the shelf of honor! I for one liked DD in the theatre and even though it lost steam on DVD the extended version, I felt, fleshed it out a bit better. I think its at best a B- movie, not a classic, and not what it could be, but passable. If they can breath life back into DD I dont think anyone would complain. And Ed Burns as DD?! That could definately be great.

"Iron Man is hardly a top-selling name"
Are you serious? You do realize that Iron Man has been selling out for the past five years or so. Not to mention the sucess of the Avengers and the New Avengers which Iron Man is a founding member of both. Iron Man is a staple of the Marvel universe and has been for the past forty years. Iron Man has had two animated series and an amimated movie based on him. So to say that he is not "a top selling name" is rediculous.

...they are going to screw up the IM armor! Seriously, am I the only one who sees this coming. There is absolutely NO WAY hollywood can resist putting wings or bazookas or something rediculously distracting on the suit, and we're all going to hate it. Also, I am anxious to see how they handle the traditional red and gold coloring...looks good in the comics, but on film I just don't know... (Then again the did pull off the red and blue Spidey outfit and got rid of the web-pits, so maybe there's still hope!)
