The Weinsteins go Asian... new slate, including a Tarantino remake?

Published at:  Apr 27, 2007 6:13:51 AM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Buried in this announcement that the Weinsteins have raised tons of money to make Asian flicks (starring Asian actors, set in Asia, etc) was a little blurb about how their slate includes releasing MY BLUEBERRY NIGHTS, the new flick from Wong Kar Wai and a remake of a '60s Chinese flick called COME DRINK WITH ME, with Quentin Tarantino directing.

Maybe I've missed something, but I've never heard that mentioned before.

I know in the past Tarantino has talked about remaking some films... my favorite was when he said at one of his QT Fests here in Austin that he wanted to remake Lucio Fulci's classic and radically underseen THE PSYCHIC (Sette note in nero) with Bridget Fonda in the Jennifer O'Neill role. But instead, he just used theme in KILL BILL.

COME DRINK WITH ME is a flick I haven't seen, but it sounds great. It's about a young woman who is sent to free a kidnapped official, who also happens to be her brother. Her attempt ends with her stuck with a poison dart and is nursed back to health by a martial arts master. They then form a plan to rescue her brother and whoop up on the bastards that got him.

Sounds cool, but there's a part of me that'd rather just see Tarantino keep on with his original work. If he lines this up to do after INGLORIOUS BASTARDS, then I have no complaints. I just want to see his damn WW2 movie. Thoughts?

Come Drink With Me is a real classic

    by john-locke

I believe it was the first time "Drunken" style fighting was seen in a film, the main Character isn't Sam Seed, he's some other cat. It's funny (intentionally) and has some great fights and a slightly twisty turny storyline, Tarantino doing a remake is fine with me because I'll be able to enjoy that and get hold of a copy of the original on DVD for my collection.

    Tarantino's doing a WW2 movie?

    by creasybear

I guess it will be an amalgamation of old WW2 movies he's seen, instead of something personal. He doesn't seem like a jingoistic, gung-ho guy, nor does he seem like a political leftist(who generally avoid WW2-themed material anyway, since it's considered by man to be the only cut-and-dried good guys vs bad guys war in US history). Spielberg did Saving Private Ryan for his dad, other directors do WW2 movies based on making a simple formula movie, but I can't imagine Tarantino's pop culture wit and narrative twists working in this genre. I'm not writing him off on this, but it certainly would be starkly different from everything else he's done.

    by franklin t marmoset

By which I mean an Asian remaking a Tarantino film. All Asian filmmakers should have the automatic right to steal whatever they like from Tarantino for free. I just seems fair.P.S. Is this Inglorious Bastards still going ahead? I'm curious about that one, but also a little nervous. If Tarantino has proved anything in the last few years it's that he has all the emotional maturity of a teenage boy, which is fine when he's doing silly entertaining fluff like Kill Bill, but for some reason it seems distasteful when applied to WWII. Does anyone know anything about the script? I'm interested if he's trying something more grown up, but not if it's just a rip of The Big Red One with a bunch of Kung Fu and swords and pop music thrown in.

I was hoping 'Death Proof' was just a misstep but I think this guy has really lost it. I was willing to accept that after doing something as mature as 'Jackie Brown' he wanted a break to do some fun stuff but enough already. Now that he's done CSI, Alias, he was even an American Idol guest judge, and Death Proof I think he needs to get back to work.I liked Kill Bill, but Tarantino really needs to stop reliving his childhood in endless spoof/homages to crap.

    by sadisticsoldier31

He said he was going to film a martial arts flick in a Chinese language and he was thinking about giving it an out of sync English dub for the US release (at least) as an homage to the 70's kung fu dubs. I don't know how much has changed since then.

Why doesn't QT make something original instead of doing remakes or copying a style from the seventies or paying homage to something he liked as a kid??? Create something new and wonderful, QT, and then in twenty years people will be copying *you!* Let's see that WW2 film we've been hearing so much about. Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs were the only truly original films you have ever made.

Why not have the plot take place in Iraq?? It doesn't have to be political, just take the WWII action flick plot and take it to Iraq. There have been so many WWII flicks (and good ones at that), that I could really do without another one. Of course there haven't been thousands of Iraq movies made in order for QT to plunder/trascend the cliches of the genre, and from what it looks like, that's all QT seems interested in doing anymore.

    Quint, I'm dissapointed in you

    by nerdboy1423

I think it's pretty weak that you haven't seen "Come Drink with Me". I guess I can understand if you're not to into international cinema, but it's only considered one of the most important real martial arts films of all time, the importance being that it had a real female heroine in it, Cheng Pei Pei, who if you know your stuff, played the villain in Crouching Tiger, where Ziyi Zhang's role was heavily influenced by her character in "Come Drink with Me". It's a historic film, one that you need to see before even attempting to discuss Asian cinema. It's the best of King Hu and Shaw Bros. films. It's also my personal opinion that remaking it would be raping Hong Kong/Chinese cinema of really, an artistic national treasure. The film is timeless and I believe shows as a great cultural and industrial marker of Hong Kong cinema, to remake it with Quentin Tarantino directing or even associated with it, would shame the industry. Even though I laud the man for bringing Chung King Express over here finally on DVD, I really dislike his "stamp of approval" on all that is great in Hong Kong. I can see him releasing a DVD stateside of "Come Drink with Me", but only because I've always wished to see and hear a better transfer, But please, Quint, check out the original film, it's so much more than the short little description you wrote, it's a very important piece of world cinema!

let the guy work the way he wants to... whether he is imitating a style or doing something different it works the best when he does it his own way. if it takes him 4 years to make death proof and it comes out exactly the way he wants it to (both in terms of its content and how its released) that is way more succesful to me than his segment being cut in half and having what happened at the end of it all be replaced with something else incredibly lame because of budget concerns, a la kill bill, but made 100 million dollars its first weekend of release. dude is an artist, i guess is what i'm saying, and it's a miracle in this day and age that an artist like him can be not only popular but well-supported enough in a business sense to be able to do pretty much whatever he wants. so uh, go him.

so I'm up for an Inglorious Bastards. Sure, a Tarantino remake of Come Drink With Me would be interesting and fun to watch, but it just seems to me that he would be treading old ground seeing as he's already done his homage to that genre with Kill Bill. I also think doing a remake would be too much of a conventional move for him to take, which is contrary to his style of filmmaking.

    by melnick666

Wasn't a lot of that film taken from City on Fire? That leaves Pulp Fiction as his only truly original film.

I read this morning that he's stoked about adding another 30 minutes of footage to DP for its Euro release as a separate film. I can't imagine anything worse than even more momentum-killing yakking. Maybe the extra footage contains even more references to Vanishing Point, or a more detailed explanation of the time Zoe fell in the freaking ditch. I didn't quite get the gist of that story the first few times they described it.

    by thedohdoh

All of the recent interviews I've seen with QT, including Craig Ferguson's show for Death Proof, have him saying Inglorious Bastards will definitely be his next movie. He said he's polishing the script for it as he tours for Death Proof. I don't give a shit how much I disliked DP, there is no other film I'm more psyched to see than IGBSTRDS. It's going to be a complete monster - loaded with crazy, intense scenes and dialogue nuggets that will take years to digest in the pop consciousness. Even Stallone has finally met up with Quentin to discuss a role - THIS IS CONFIRMED. So people, lay off QT - a fucking 3-hour war film from the coolest, craziest director working today. Bring it on suckas.

    by hktelemacher

that he just called it "Glorious Bastards." Either way, it has nothing to do with the Castellari movie. I got really excited when he described it as a WWII movie with spaghetti western sensibilities, and said it's subtitle could (or would?) be ONCE UPON A TIME IN GERMAN OCCUPIED FRANCE. That little bit of hype definitely whetted my appetite for something I previously really didn't think would ever even happen. And does anyone else think it's kind of pointless and counter productive for QT to do a straight remake of one movie? I'd rather see an "original" effort from Tarantino that is, in essence, a remake of like 50 movies at once. I'm wondering if he's still aiming insane and still wants Stallone, Schwarzenegger, Van Damme and Eddie Murphy in there with Madsen and Svenson.

    by v1c_vega

I would have to question Weinsteins marketing skills ! there is a saying in England "school boy error" this sums up Weinsteins handling of Grindhouse. Your movie opens and takes less box office than you expected , so within 3/4 days of opening you publicly panic and make stupid statements like it not taking the money we expected so were thinking about splitting/remaking/adding footage etc . You've basically said to the rest of the viewing public that yes this movie sucks not only that you've broadcast this information worldwide so now you've gone and reduced the appeal to people who may have gone to see the movie but now think it's crap because of what Weinsteins said. Now this movie will only appeal to RR/QT and cult movie fans period no matter how good it is. Why is it being left so late for the UK ? no one knows what the hell is going on or when it's being released , talk is it's straight to DVD or remade or split or who fucking knows so non fans have the perception that Grindhouse is a pile of shit. School boy error Weinstein you have fucked your own movie. I will still love it but i'm a fan and i don't know when or how i will will get to see it. On the subject of Bastards Tarantino has been talking about this forever and
after Jackie Brown has been nothing but side tracked and distracted from making Bastards. Bastards was supposed to be the 4th film by QT but we got Kill Bill after 6 years (love kill Bill but still). It must be difficult for Tarantino he doesn't need to do anything any more, financially he's made it he only likes making things he wants to make RR is his buddy so they keep holding hands (love what they make but still) he got the critical and public acclaim for pulp so he can just kick back and do what the fuck he wants to (blueberry whatever). Bastards is more serious
    than this lifestyle it's commitment
of the highest level because to get Bastards wrong is to kill yourself and be a failure. Bastards is Tarantino's Everest as he says he's still to finish the script , he's ironing out what he wants to do with it make a movie or TV series or both. It is blatantly obvious that he won't be able to make it in one 3hr movie. So as I see it Tarantino is scared to make Bastards and keeps finding these little distractions to justify to himself why he's not making Bastards. I think Bastards will be a defining film not just for Tarantino fans , peers , critics but for the man himself. This one film can be the legendary status that Tarantino needs to stand shoulder to shoulder with the legends of film makers and i don't believe that even with his self proclaimed amatuer status that Tarantino would not want this , he already has everything else this is something you can't buy you can only achieve it. The adulation of the fans is assured no matter what to me Tarantino is a film GOD but it is time to stop talking and deliver the BASTARD.

    The problem with

    by emeraldboy

    qt is this.....
His first two films were a homage to new wave french films. Even his film company came from the gang in a bout de Souffle. they were called band de parte. His third and arguably his best film was elmore leonard's rum puch which QT re-titled Jackie Browne. It was again cool, movie with cool cast cool dialoug and cool soundtrack. If modern audiences had never heard of the french new wave, those movies were so assured and so well written, that it didnt matter. Then he took a long break, went away and came bag with a mix bag. Kill bill has none of the cool dialog, Cool soundtrack(trailer music rocked) and has a character that is embarking on a vengence quest. it has flashes of brilliance here and there and it even hints of spin offs. One of the great things about KIll bill was it use of colour. The jolting scene of a bruised and battered Uma thurman was stunning. The use of colour in Vivica A fox house and that great scene where her daughter comes back from school earlier. There is an amazing scene Kill bill volume 2, where thurman is buried in a coffin bound hand and foot with only flashlight. There was nothing else in that movie, kill bill vol 2 to reminded of the great filmmaker, I saw in Resevoir dogs and Pulp fiction and jackie brown. KIll bill was a huge disappointment, I want him to make glorious bastards to remind everyone what a great filmmaker he was. I am annoyed with all this fucking around with Grindhouse. Either release it or not. or put the thing on DVD. Someone please tell QT, that we are still waiting for Kill bill volume 3.

NO he is not a great director, NO he does not make very original movies, and YES his writing is as self-indulgent as humanly possible, but you know what? At least he makes FUN movies to watch. At least he is honest about having an un-original movie unlike the rest of main-stream hollywood that just re-makes the same 10 movies over and over again. He makes movies he would want to watch instead of movies he thinks will make money. Even his most pedestrian efforts are miles above anything Paul Haggis has ever made (though I admit Crash is one of the most gut-bustingly hilarious movies I have ever seen).

I'm a little surprised at the Tarantino hate.

    by rbatty024

Sure, I have some problems with his movies (he writes archetypes not characters (except in Jackie Brown)), but he at least lets a movie take its time and meander a bit. He can get some great performances out of actors and his directing is a wonderful break from the popular quick cut MTV shit that's just about anywhere. He's egotistical and sometimes self-indulgent, but there are flashes of brilliance in his movies.

    Now Kill Ted

    by napoleon park

Kill Bill Vol. 3 in twenty years? The daughter of Vivica, A Fox, tracks down Beatrix, the woman who killed her mother right in front of her eyes, and exacts her revenge - then must fight Kiddo's daughter to the death. Darryl Hannah's character: still blind. *** When I saw the headline I misunderstood, and read "Tarantino Remake" to mean that someone was actually going to remake one of QT's movies. Hell, if they'd do something as stupid as remake Peckinpah's "The Getaway" (or the rumoured "Straw Dogs" redux), you know it will happen eventually. And either someone brilliant will actually bring something fresh to the material and amaze everyone, or, more likely, some action blockbuster hack will churn out something horrific with exactly the wrong cast of whoever's trendy at the time. (I don't know who's trendy now, but a few years ago the example would be "A Psycho style shot-for-shot remake of "True Romance" starring Vince Vaughn and Jennifer Aniston". At last, something good about being so fucking old - I won't live to see bad Tarantino remakes. If I'm lucky.

QT steals, but he's just continuing a tradition...

    by chishu_ryu

Seems to me Tarantino's brilliance is to steal bits and pieces from his favorite films and filmmakers and put in his own dialogue. I remember an early Tarantino interview where he said he and his brother used to watch drive-in movies from over the fence, and as he couldn't hear the sound, he'd come up with and later write his own dialogue for those films. Tarantino's films are a reflection of that. His first two, Dogs and Fiction were a little Asian cinema, a little Scorsese, a little DePalma, little French New Wave, etc. with Tarantino speak. He does it well. Have to admit, it's kind of fun to see guys like Travolta or Tim Roth utter Tarantino's infantile stylized faux-cool dialogue. And for the stealing, he's continuing a tradition that began with George Lucas, Spielberg, Scorsese, and DePalma, the first fanboy filmmakers. Truly analyze all their early films and you'll see they all took from other films. Lucas took from Ford and Kurosawa, DePalma took from Hitchcock, Scorsese and Spielberg took from everybody. In a way, Tarantino is the next generation's George Lucas. In a way. Wouldn't compare him to Scorsese or Spielberg, tho. I expect this Inglorious Bastards project, if it ever sees the light of a projector, to be heavy with Sam Fuller films.

we hate him because we love him

    by spandau belly

I think all the QT hate is a result of what I said earlier. QT hasn't challenged himself or us since Jackie Brown and it's becoming sad to watch him get so lazy. I think most of us love at least two films this guy has done and were disappointed with Death Proof and feel even more dissappointed to hear him taking on even easier materiel that he himself has already covered in Kill Bill.

    The MY BLUEBERRY NIGHTS announcement

    by harry weinstein

The pick-up of MY BLUEBERRY NIGHTS was announced months ago, which is probably why it's not more prominently mentioned. This isn't the first time the Weinsteins have dabbled in Asian-based production, they helped foot the bill for Tsui Hark's disappointing LEGEND OF ZU (ZU WARRIORS in the US) and the US-HK co-production TMNT - they also had a deal with Centro Digital Pictures in Hong Kong to produce a CGI animated feature, but I don't think anything much ever came of that.

    Also...

    by harry weinstein

...Tarantino had talked about directing a remake of THIRTY-SIXTH CHAMBER OF SHAOLIN, to be produced by the Weinsteins (who have the original coming out this summer on DVD), Celestial Pictures, and Shaw Brothers. This is the first I've heard of him remaking COME DRINK WITH ME, another Shaw Brothers/Celestial Pictures film that the Weinsteins have the rights to.

Come drink with me is a good film.

    by proper

I enjoyed it.36th chamber re-release eh.Kids could learn a lot from that.Immortal film.Tarantino isn't suitable to deal with these films in my opinion. His style is too explicit at this time,Kill Bill 1+2 were ok and I enjoyed part II in particular but many people I know didnt even get past the rape the comatose woman scene and they didn't give the rest a chance, shame but there you go......For me,he sometimes seems to appreciate and let himself be influenced by the more gratuitous aspects of certain genres(IMO one mans meat, another mans poison etc),so to deal with these films he would have to cut down the coarseness and show restraint. If he could do that with the skills he already has I believe he could do some really good work and make a film that promotes the messages of the classics and have some good action, taking the fighting back to a fighters style being the source of strength etc,and advancing them without being a Matrix remix(matrix kicked arse but that was last century ;>).I have no doubt he knows his onions but boy quality control maaaan.I find that a dodgy copy of a classic martial arts movie adds to the ancient parchment feeling of seeing a relic from a forgotten time.....

    "Reservoir Bitches"...

    by therealratigan

...Porn got there first. I remember seeing the box on the shelf for "Reservoir Bitches", starring Debi Diamond back when Tarantino was "it", and they could cash-in with that title.http://tinyurl.com/ywvxeu

very tasty synopsis of Come Drink With Me

    by la frog

"It's about a young woman who is sent to free a kidnapped official, who also happens to be her brother. Her attempt ends with her stuck with a poison dart and is nursed back to health by a martial arts master. They then form a plan to rescue her brother and whoop up on the bastards that got him."
From this angle, that defining film of modern Chinese cinema doesn't seem like much more than material for nerds to jerk off on and remake with cables and big money. King Hu deserves better than your american vulgatiry. And to that Quint guy. If you consider yourself a sort of film journalist, when you write a piece, do your homework and watch the movies you're talking about.
    No respect.

This is from Rte.ie about grindhouse openings

    by emeraldboy

for uk/ireland It pretty much confirms what we all know but it gives a release date . Read this and make up your own minds:

Ireland won't get Grindhouse double bill
It has been announced that the Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez double bill 'Grindhouse' will be released in Ireland and England as two separate films.

Tarantino's slasher movie, 'Death Proof', will be released on 21 September; it is due to screen in competition at the Cannes Film Festival later this month.

Rodriguez's zombie-themed film, 'Planet Terror', will be released at a later date.

AdvertisementCommenting, Harvey Weinstein of the Weinstein Company, the makers of 'Grindhouse', said: "We are very proud of 'Grindhouse' which earned overwhelming rave reviews for its audaciousness and boldness."

He continued: "Based on US audience's positive reactions to Quentin Tarantino's 'Death Proof' and Robert Rodriguez's 'Planet Terror' combined with their resistance to the three-hour running time, we've revised our UK and Ireland release plans to allow audiences the chance to see the films separately, like they will be shown in all international territories."

He added: "We are really excited about launching the new version of 'Death Proof' in Cannes and about the international release for both movies."
