Hey now! Would You Subscribe To DirecTV If It Was The Only Place You Could Watch VERONICA MARS or CAPRICA or STAR TREK??

Published at:  Apr 26, 2007 7:13:50 AM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

I've lured you in here with a misleading headline. There are no plans afoot to make “Veronica Mars” or “Caprica” or “Star Trek” available only to DirecTV customers.

But the supernatural soap opera “Passions” is going that route, according to a press release issued Wednesday. And it got me to thinking.

NBC is dropping “Passions” from its daytime schedule in a few months, and satellite colossus DirecTV will be offering exclusive new episodes on its The 101 channel (free to all subscribers I believe) starting Sept. 17. Which means “Passions” fans won’t be able to watch it on broadcast, cable or Dish Network systems.

Will this drive millions of “Passions” fans to DirecTV? Maybe!

And if this works for “Passions,” could it work for “Drive”? Or a new “Firefly” series? Why not “Caprica” (since SciFi has apparently shelved it)? Why not “Veronica Mars” (assuming the CW foolishly elects not to pick it up for a fourth season)? Or a “Lost Room” series? Or a new “Buffy” spinoff? Or a new “Star Trek” series masterminded by J.J. Abrams?

(Yes, I get that 22 hours of “Star Trek” likely cost more than the – what, 250 hours a year? – of “Passions.” But 250 hours of a soap can’t be supercheap, can it?)

But I tell ya. If DirecTV was the only provider of “Veronica Mars” or “Battlestar Galactica” or “Lost” or “Star Trek” or “Heroes,” I believe I’d have a hard time resisting a switch.

The press release:

NBC'S PASSIONS TO WORK ITS MAGIC ON DIRECTV VIEWERS WITH ALL NEW EPISODES BEGINNING SEPTEMBER 17

Fan Favorite Daytime Drama Joins DIRECTV's The 101 Lineup; New Episodes Produced by NBC Universal Television Studio Will Air on DIRECTV

El Segundo, Calif., April 25, 2007-NBC Universal Television Studio and DIRECTV, the nation's leading satellite television provider, today announced that the NBC niversal-produced daytime drama Passions has found a new home on DIRECTV where the popular program will continue for a 9th season. Under the new agreement, NBC Universal Television Studio will produce brand-new episodes to air Monday-Thursday on DIRECTV's original programming channel, The 101.

The celebrated daytime drama, which currently averages over 2 million viewers and enjoys an intensely dedicated fan base, will end its network run on NBC September 7 with a series of cliffhangers and will resurface on DIRECTV September 17, picking up where the series left off. The show will remain in its current time slot of 2 PM ET and DIRECTV will air encore marathons of the show each weekend.

"Passions fans no longer need to mourn the demise of their beloved program as it has found new life on DIRECTV," said Eric Shanks, executive vice president of Entertainment for DIRECTV. "We care about this show and are extremely proud to give it an exclusive home here at DIRECTV."

"This new arrangement with DIRECTV is truly a landmark development that allows NBC Universal to extend the Passions brand in a fresh and entirely new way, to DIRECTV's 16 million homes," said Marc Graboff, president, NBC Universal Television, West Coast. "It will reward the dedicated fans of the daytime drama who can continue to enjoy it on DIRECTV and also opens up a great new model for other television programs to find new life on other non-traditional platforms."

The majority of the cast and crew is expected to return when the one-hour series begins shooting the new DIRECTV episodes in August.

DIRECTV will make it easy for Passions viewers to keep track of the happenings in "Harmony" by providing fans free installation, a DVR or HD receiver upgrade, and a portable DVD player by calling a special phone number (866-788-0003) or visiting the Web (www.directv.com/passions) that will give those without DIRECTV plenty of time to switch before the new season begins. Passions fans can also visit www.nbc.com for more information about the show.

Passions will be the first scripted drama series to join The 101 original program lineup which includes viewer favorites like Project MyWorld, The Fizz, havoc on The 101, and Championship Gaming Series. The series will broadcast four one-hour episodes per week, as well as a weekend marathon of that week's shows so fans can catch up on the action each week.

Passions explores the lives, loves and losses of four core families in the small New England town of Harmony: the Cranes, the Lopez-Fitzgeralds, the Bennetts and the Russells, each of whom have their own distinct and diverse personalities. The series debuted on NBC in 1999 and has routinely been amongst the top daytime programs for women ages 18-34, and currently is tied for #1 among all daytime dramas in both women ages 18-24 and females 12-24.

New episodes of Passions will begin shooting in August and will continue to be taped at the CBS Studio Center in Studio City, Calif. The show is produced by NBC Universal Television Studio in association with Outpost Farms Productions, Inc.

I know, their customer service is atrocious, it's too expensive, and so on, but I like the whole on-demand thing and I think I prefer the movie channels over DirecTV. Anyway, I would pay extra for cable to see some of those shows. Especially if Veronica Mars was on Cinemax.

    by abin sur

While I like the idea of additional premium content on DirecTV, I don't want my bill to go up to help subsidize a freakin' soap opera. Hey Herc, you're a high-roller from all the money you make off this site - when you switch back to DirecTV, you should get the GOLD package! For $2000 a year you get EVERY channel they've got, pay per view movies and events any time you want, and all the other bells and whistles. Me, I'm spending about 80 bucks a month on the HD package, HD Tivo and HBO, plus the premium channel package. Not too bad.

    HD Channels on DirecTV

    by theageofknights.com

I love DirecTV and I would kick and scream if I ever had to switch back to Comcast, but don't fall for the 100 HD channels by the end of the year. They've been talking about sending those 2 new satellites up since I left Circuit City in 2003. The company that shoots the satellite's into the sky just had their main launching platform blow up. Don't be hopeful.

    by abin sur

I upgraded from the HR10-250 to the HR-20 a couple of months ago, and according to the service guy the satellites had already been launched and that the figurative "switch" would be flipped later this year. They already did a preview of the National Geographic Channel in HD about a month ago. I'm cautiously optimistic we'll have those channels by year's end.

    Meet the Mets???

    by havok2000

I had Time-Warner but after the New York Mets sublime but ultimately disappointing season last year (NL East champs, but still) I decided that this was the year I was going for it, te full sports package. I've never gotten it and always resented the notion of paying $160 per season for a little extra signal. Resented it a lot. All cable is too goddam expensive but that's another story. Anyway, I thought I got lucky when I found out that Dish Network subscribers got Sports NY, an East Coast regional cable channel that carries most Met games at a considerable savings from DirecTV, the $160 option. I confirmed on the phone with the saleswoman several times that Dish Network did feature Sports NY, which she readily confirmed. Additionally, it lists the station in the package I got on their website. So they came and swapped out my Time Warner HD DVR for a Dish Network box and I went looking for the Met game. And ... you probably guessed by now, it wasn't THERE! As Charlie Brown used to say, ARRRRGGGGHHHHH!!! I called Dish Network straight away and this fellow confirmed for me that no, I can't get Sports NY in my area (Hollywood). So I told them to come by and get their no-Met game getting box out of my house. I realized at this point I only had one option. DirecTV. The only game in town. I remember seeing the classic silent short film "A Corner In Wheat" - well, what was this but a corner in cable signal?? Anyway, DirecTV came by and hooked up the HD DVR, programming looks great, good or better than Time Warner or Adelphia. And I have my Met games. And maybe, one week soon, I'll have a day that isn't dominated by waiting on or going to see my new cable provider. PS - I want all HD everything righe now. It's just too good. I saw "Star Wars Ep. 4" HD on HBO a couple weeks back - it looked sick good and I've seen that film, well, you can imagine how many times.

100's of HD Channels on Cable too!

    by vtecno_geek

Time Warner (and I am sure others) have plans to role out SDV or Switched Digital Video, by 4Q07. Think of it like IPTV. Your Cable Box Tuner will send a signal back to the headend and that will tell it what channel that tuner wants sent to it. This will allow them to maintain higher bandwidth and send 100's of HD channels.

...it wouldn't bump its ass a hoppin'.You're presuming a whole helluva lot, here, Herc. For one, you presume that Whedon's got a Buffy spin off in him. Or that Firefly has a snot's chance on an arrid day of making a comeback as a series. Or that the cost of producing any of these theoretical series would be even close to offset by the number of subscribers they'd bring in.I normally wouldn't be this hard on someone for dreaming a little dream, but this is "Ain't it Cool News," not a "Wouldn't it be Cool If?" blog. And I'm downright irritated by your use of a blatantly misleading headline to waste my time with your fanciful notions of what a wonderful world it would be if you could have a sattelite channel that ran nothing but your dream shows. In fact, because I had to suffer through that fantasy, here's one of mine: I'm playing The Godfather on my XBox 360 when my wife comes in wearing a push-up bra and garters and carrying a medium rare prime rib. She cuts the steak for me so I can eat it without interrupting my game and then proceeds to unzip my pants...

And why aren't more talkbackers voicing their support of such an idea? Maybe somebody's listening. Long shot, but desperate times indeed, with VM on life support, BSG rumoredly entering its final season, Firefly still sorely missed, and Drive getting axed right after the umbilical cord was cut. As DVD sales have proven, there is PLENTY of money to be made off diehard fans of cult shows. VM and BSG wouldn't be suffering the scrutiny of the low ratings as fans would happily pay per episode or subscribe to a new HBOish channel or specific service just to watch their shows, whereas I doubt the L&Os and CSIs would have the same ratings as when they're free. The appeal of those shows is that they're traditional, end-of-the-day, standalone episodes that don't require much emotional investment or remembering continuity.

They'd HAVE to come out on DVD to even have a chance of breaking even moneywise. The main reason I won't ever switch to DirectTV is that I have TiVo and I love TiVo. I would be willing to prepay for a season's worth of DVDs for a series I wanted before the show was even made, if such a choice were available, it helped make the show production possible in the first place, and it would guarantee no mid-season cancellations of great series.

I would also be willing to prepay for subscriptions to individual series via cable.

How about a pay channel for the canceled?

I'd pay $10/month for a pay channel that specializes in reconstituting canceled shows. Pretty much all the shows I like get canceled early. I'd consider this a far greater bargain than HBO or Showtime. Almost everybody has some show that might bring them to pay $10/month for.
Actually, I think another great idea would be to have a stock market for TV shows. Let me invest in a particular show, in exchange for dividends on DVD sales. Even the shows that don't ultimately make it would result in a profit for me. Maybe even more than if they did make it. It would be a great model that would all but guarantee that cult favorites get a full run and at no risk to the network. Of course once they see the profits that patience can yield, they'd probably try to cut out the investors for a few years before the ADD kicks in and they go back to reality TV.

Wow, is that a dumb idea

    by jack burton

Anyone that has been burned by DirectTV would think the same. In some parts of the country, like mine, you can't get the local affiliates, you have to get the network feed. So I had the joy of lving in central US but watching Fox on the Los Angeles feed. For large metro areas it's great because I had it in Chicago but move to the sticks and you are fucked.

    OnDemand is better option

    by frodofraggins

I would NOT switch to directTV unless there was a LARGE list of interesting and exclusive shows available. And frankly if they offer several exclusive shows, how will they know which shows people subscribed to their service for? OnDemand is the smartest means of providing shows imo. Direct to DVD is missing out on a decent sized market. The people that are buying the B5 DVD's are the ones that would pay for it on Demand and then buy the DVDs if they were made available a FEW months later.

How about straight to DVD series?

    by jimmy jazz

Since shows like Firefly make a big splash in the DVD market, why not cut out the middle man and make TV series especially for DVD release. It could be a serialized thing where they would release one disk with three episodes a month. Or they could release a whole 12 episode series at once.

“Lost Room” NEEDS to be a series

    by killah_mate

That shit was going places. And then it ended. And I can't even complain, because it's a miniseries! Damn. Anyway, Sci-Fi should seriously consider it; I mean, "Dresden Files" is fairly nice, but I'd drop that in a heartbeat if it meant that I'd see that room one more time... (ditto Atlantis - hell, that one I don't even like, but I know if one of them were to go, it would be Dresden Files. Life sucks.)

    Question about DirecTV????

    by rokurgepta

Does DirecTV disable all the USB and network ports on their boxes? We currently have the DVR R10, and the USB and network ports are disabled, and I researched it and found that DirecTV did that on purpous to prevent pirating? when I bought the thing the reason I bought it was because of those features, and I'm pissed that they sold me on features that are disabled.

Also I'm looking into getting an HD DVR since we have an HD TV, and DirecTV quoted me $299.99 to upgrade my receiver. Is that too much? and is there another place/way I can get an HD DVR receiver for cheaper?

    thanks in advance

I agree with Killah. Lost Room neeeeeeds it's own series (or at least a graphic novel). The totally unique logic of the Lost Room universe has too much potential.

    RE: Lost Room

    by rokurgepta

When I Originally heard about Lost room, over a year before it actually aired, I had thought it was going to be a tv series. When I finally watched the mini, I loved it, but wished it would have been an actual series. With all the different objects, it could stretch out the story for years.

anyone else completely disapointted with the newest adaptation of painkiller jane? It's an absolute chore to watch, it's slow, boring, anti-climactic, 100% Weak Sauce!

I feel like the Sci-Fi Channel might be losing it. I have to wait till 2008 for new Battlestar Galactica. Just as SG-1 is starting to get better again, with it's new Farscape additions, there's only like 6 episodes left. Atlantis is only decent 50% of the time. Dresden is FANtastic, but it's season seemed hellah short. Eureka has potential, i wish it had more edge to it.

oh and back to Lost Room, is it just me, or does it remind you a little bit of Friday the 13th the Series? I wish sci-fi would re-air that show, I remember liking the few episodes I saw years ago.

Cable lacks Sunday Ticket and you can't use OTA easily

    by the_pissboy1

I admit I love my Sunday Ticket but I also love HD local channels OTA. DTV's HD/Tivo box allows you to seamlessly mix OTA and sat signals. We record all our NBC shows (30 Rock, Office, Heroes) and Veronica Mars OTA as that signal is far better than anything you'll get from sat or cable. HBO comes off the sat box for Entourage. Regardless, it's a smooth transition as you just flip channels and DTV allows you to remove channels so our system only shows about 30 channels. Cox cable forces you to keep all their shitty channels...why?

    by pennsy

Because the DTV conked out on me at the first drop of rain. And stayed out for hours on end. The dish was on the roof, unobstructed. With Dish Network, when it really comes down, the rain, the signal is interrupted for 15 minutes, tops. What good are dozens more HD channels when you can't see them in a rainstorm?

I will never subscribe to sattelite TV

    by gregoryharbin

They compress their signals HUGELY. Every time their commercials claim '100s of HD channels!' I cringe. It's not HD if there's huge macro blocks everywhere. Even the bit that's in cable is annoying (OTA HD FTW), but it's better than the crap sattelite gives you.

    by bobbyjoe

Yeah, great. And then we'll eventually end up with a system where to get all the first-run shows you like to watch, you have to subscribe to every outlet out there: DirectTV, Dish Network, Comcast, TimeWarner, etc., etc., etc. You'll have satellite dishes out the wazoo and a monthly bill of eight hundred dollars. Yippeee!

    by napoleon park

Everyone I know with any kind of satellite TV system gripes constantly about how they lose their signal every time it snows or rains or there's hail or a tornado or a high wind or, you know, a helicoptor flies by. I'm addicted to watching the shows I like without missing an episode here or there, so I wouldn't switch to satellite even if it came to my house, shotgunned me with bong hits, baked me a chocolate mirangue pie and blew me. Of course there's that whole poverty thing going on, too.

    It's broad vs. deep.

    by hercules

Maybe it's time to stop chasing broad audiences and start chasing the passionate ones. I'd be willing to pay $2 an episode on PPV to watch "Veronica Mars" or "Drive." If there's a million others willing to do the same, that's $2 million, and that's enough to make an episode. Put out a $30 DVD at the end of the season and you're sitting in a pile of cash.

RE: Veronica's renewal? I think Rob Thomas pitches both "VM: Hearst Sophomore" and "VM: FBI" to The CW on May 2. The CW announces its fall schedule two weeks later.

    by roboteer

Well I used to know a girl and I could have sworn
that her name was Veronica...Green lighting for a year that monument to popular culture, Search For The Next Pussycat Doll can't ne a good sign since it took over V's slot. Doesn't look good. On another front.... thought this was a joke at first, but some company is coming out with a line of VERONICA MARS 12" 'action' figures. WHAT!!?
Yes, it appears true. V, Weevil, and Logan first and then the whole cast with state of the art head scans later this year. Much as I like the show, I can't see needing these. Most figures are not toys, but adult collectibles, having only a run of 12,000 or so. If they can find that many fans who just have to have that Enrico Colantoni figure, then they come out ahead I guess.
    Who woulda thunk?

Hey Herc, if the channel is free?

    by skidmarkedundies

How do the production costs and salaries get paid? Is it by revenue for the commercials or by Direct TV subscriptions? I don't know if it is a cost effective venture for CGI-reliant shows like BSG, Firefly or Drive, but shows like Veronica Mars or maybe Everwood (due to it being more story driven, location friendly storylines), it might work. Interesting idea. But Passions should not be your trailblazing show for this venture. That show is horrible.

    by turketron

Ok, I realize that posting this late in the talkback almost insures that it won't get seen, but I just wanted to say that NO, I would never switch to DirecTV. I was forced to have it for about 7 months and the feed SUCKED compared to what I now get from my cable provider (Brighthouse, in central Florida). Not to mention the time when the box died with one of their updates and I was without TV for a week or so. Also, a clouds will usually insure that your feed gets interrupted for a few hours. DirecTV is garbage. If my shows were on it, I would simply get them from the internet instead.
