TV Guide: Fox Tows DRIVE To the Scrapheap!!
I am – Hercules!!
Faster than you can swat a “Firefly,” Fox appears to have cancelled “Drive,” the acclaimed new action-adventure series that reteamed writer-producer Tim Minear with actor Nathan Fillion.
It looks like “House” repeats inherit the pre-“24” slot effective Monday. The last two completed episodes may get burned off on two Fridays in May.

I DVR'd the pilot, and every episode since... and have yet to watch them. I guess I should just delete them and move on, or risk frustration if I happen to really enjoy the potential of the show.

It wasn't the best show in the world, but it was entertaining and the acting was pretty good. Nathan Fillion deserves better, as do the rest of the actors on the show

First of all, I don't even trust that Fox will air the final 2 episodes that they do have in the can. Anyone remember JUSTICE or VANISHED? In the case of the former, I believe they never bothered to show the unaired episodes they still had -- though I could be wrong. Maybe I lost count and they did burn them all off. The problem with JUSTICE is that Fox said they were going to retool it and bring it back, and I've never heard a word after that.As for VANISHED, which was a freakin' mystery for crying out loud, Fox didn't give 2 shits about its viewers and simply said "You want to see how what it was REALLY all about? How it ends? Fine, go online. We'll put 'em up there. But we're not going to bother eating up any more air time with this dud."Which brings up my final question: I thought this was greenlit through 13? I can understand Fox saying "Hey, we're losing SO much money that we don't want you guys to even bother shooting the other 7", but IF they do show the final 2 in the can, will they be drastically reedited to show SOME kind of wrap-up ending? Or is this just another class Fox TV case of "You watched it, you're screwed!"

Well it's been said before and it'll be said again so let me be the one to say it...
FUCK FOX. If something doesn't immediately get "Karaoke Contest" ratings, it's out the door.

I am a geek. I love action movies/tv shows. I love a good chase scene. Guns, wrecks, shit blowing up? I am SO there. Loved everything I saw in the previews for this show... the look, the actors, the creative team. I am your target audience for this show. And I didn't watch a single minute of it. Why? A few reasons: Lone Gunmen. Firefly. VR5. Harsh Realm. Kitchen Confidential. Mantis. The Tick. Futurama. Reunion. Space - Above and Beyond. Wonderfalls. The Adventures of Brisco County. Sliders. Titus. Profit. NEED I GO ON??? With the exception of X-Files and the Simpsons, you have killed every single show that I liked on your network, most just like Drive, cancelled four or five episodes in. After Reunion (a limited series, f'r dog's sake), I swore off Fox permanently. Your new shows bomb because we have gotten sick to death of finding and liking a new show only to see it murdered by Fox a few weeks later. We don't watch you anymore, and we're never going to again. Quit trying.

Drive had great potential for a new serialized drama, and I was set to add it to my list of other fave serialized dramas, Heroes and Lost. But noooooo ... Fox has to fucking ruin another good thing. What the hell is up with their track record for cancelling new series so damn fast?! Don't even get me started on Reunion ...
Poor Tim Minear. I remember meeting and interviewing the guy about 10 or 11 years ago when he was the shining star in an otherwise abysmal group of writers tackling Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman. He wrote the best episodes of that show, hands down, and I'm happy to see him creating such good stuff. Too bad Fox has to wank all over it. -

Not the greatest show ever made, but like a previous poster said, would've made a great summer show. I know the ratings were horrible, but Fox really didn't give it any kind of chance after they saw the first few numbers. I know he's still mostly known to geek circles, but even EW said it recently -- Nathan Fillion really deserves to be a star, and find a good project that sticks.

Just stop fucking going to FOX. I hate getting attached and then a show getting cancelled. The most painful was probably with Miracles. Their last aired episode "Hand of God" basically set up the whole direction for the show, and then it was gone.

Keifer is already signed for the next 3 seasons of 24, plus the movie. He is the only person that can't be replaced. Ricky will likely be the character that needs his arm chopped off at the end of teh season. Or maybe Jack will off him when he tries to kill one of the baddies that Jack needs to interview. I just hope that Chloe dies soon. Chouldn't they get a hot chick to run that position; instead of someone that pouts like a duck all the time?
Bring back Elisha as some field agent/stripper and the show will be perfect. -
Fillion signed a 5 year contract with them and I adore him. I figured if he could forgive them so could I. Maybe Waitress will do really well in theaters. Then Adrienne Shelley will get the recognition she deserved and Nathan will be given more movies.

Firefly, Wonderfalls, The Inside, and now Drive. i read an interview with him following the cancellation of The Inside where he joked that he was happy to keep being given money by Fox to develop series that only ran 13 episodes, but i reckon he's gotta be so pissed by now it ain't funny. It sucks ass that shows like Drive get cancelled fresh out of the gate but drivel like One Tree Hill keeps getting renewed year after fucking year.

Damn, but these shows need to produce fast to please the studios now. Drive was a fun show! No, it wasn't perfect and would need some parts of it massaged a little, but it was quite enjoyable. Poor Nathan Fillian just cannot get a break. He's a good actor, and easy to connect with. One of these days he'll find something that works. This just sucks.

I'll have to admit that whilst I like Drive, it wasn't Supercalafragalistic, but it DID have potential, and just like Firefly, and countless other shows, FOX did not even give Drive a chance in Hell. It's almost like they planned for it to fail for the sole purpose of using it as a tax write off. For Christs sake two weeks in April is an absolute Joke, it's cruel and not so unusual for Fox though. I think the execs at Fox Hate Minear and Fillion. On a slight Tangent of a subject, I heard way way back that a possible remake of Evil Dead was going to be made...and since I heard they wouldn't be using Bruce "The Chin" Campbell... Wouldn't Fillion make a Great Ash? I probly just got myself a few thousand haters for that suggestion but *shrug* what can I say I less than 3 Fillion as an Actor, I want to see him in some brilliantly successful projects.

Fox is certainly the worst offender, but by no means the only network guilty of selling viewers short with their quick cancellations. The big networks don't seem to realize the viscous circle they are creating. They want new shows with big rating right out of the gate and if they don't get them within the first 10 or so episodes they drop the hammer. Viewers keep getting burned investing time in shows that get canceled in mid stream with no resolution to the story. Viewers get gun shy about new shows and don't tune in, new shows get low ratings. That is why the "lesser" cable networks like FX, USA and Sci-Fi are getting my attention now. They don't seem as fixated on high ratings and are more likely to keep a new show around for at least a full season.

Most of the scenes were characters sitting in a car talking to each other. How long were they going to draw that out? Inevitably the race would end. Do they reach the finish line at the end of season 1? Then what? I watched an episode of this and thought it was o.k., but maybe the reason I wasn't hooked was because I didn't imagine any way the writers simultaneously could reach a satisfying conclusion and continually drag it out for an indeterminate number of seasons.That leads me to my proposal. Why does everything have to be a series? Why not package some concepts as 13-episode events? You have enough time to make something a little more involving than a four-hour miniseries, and you can tell a real story as opposed to a serial that might never finish or just another cookie-cutter show with its legal case/medical affliction of the week formula. That way we know that we'll get a natural end to the story and not be tortured by the X-Files/24 staying-too-long-after-the-party's-over syndrome. If a network had the guts to do a few of these well and leave the audience wanting more (maybe from the same core writing/directing/acting troupe), you could really have something. And I bet the DVD sales would have a lot of potential.

And even with that show, they're skating on thin ice...this year's whole story arc has been just a hair short of ridiculous and that's disappointing considering how good it was last year. But they're not the only ones...ABC tends to do the same thing with superior shows...anyone remember Cupid, Eyes and Miracles? But what's really sad is that the public has little or no interest in these...unless someone's being voted off an island or belting out a crappy tune, the attention span of the average American is nil. Minear and Fillion deserve a lot better.

Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? I was willing to go along for the ride, but as I mentioned in the other TB, during the last episode I was way too conscious of how nicely things moved along when Fillion was on screen, and how things came to a screeching halt when he wasn't. This was never destined to be a great show anyway. Oh, well. I'm not crushed, but unlike Minear's unintentionally hilarious "The Inside", I certainly thought this one had a decent chance to become something I'd look forward to.

I have long been wondering about that--why not tell a complete, closed story in 13 or 22 episodes? Why do mini-series have to be so limited (4-8 hours)? Who would want to watch people drive a road race for 5 seasons--nobody! But a tight story that resolves loose ends and closes the book in one season--sweet. There are lots of stories that are suited for a single 22 episode run.How about a GREAT CAST that does one such story arc per season, and then RETURNS for a second season, doing an entirely different story, playing entirely different parts? Like a theatre company!As Long AS it is NOT on FOX. Fox should forced to air a Network ID tag every 30 minutes, with a bell ringing and a Leper with Fox Branded rags for clothes, shouting UNCLEAN UNCLEAN!bastards

I'll concede that the first season was fun to watch. But that whole second season felt like desperate filler. I think it's funny that a concept show like that made it through a whole season out of 'Prison', yet all the other concept shows can't make it beyond the character intros...

Fox did promote the hell out of Arrested Development and it never saw ratings...of course moving it around like they did with Family Guy when it was first on probably didn't help. I almost want to give up on tv and just look at my old viewmaster discs...at least I know they'll be around for a while.

honestly, what the fuck? the ratings weren't great, but they weren't HORRIBLE...something between like 6.0-7.0, at least in the premiere week...unbelievable that they just REFUSE to give shows a chance.
FOX, you fucking suck. once 24 is gone, i honestly don't know if i'll EVER watch FOX. not everyone likes the American Idol type of bullshit, you assholes. some of us enjoy REAL shows that provide actual entertainment. and why, for the love of god, would you cancel this show NOW, when we know there is NO chance for us to ever, ever, ever even get a conclusion since they never even started filming on the final seven of the year?

Doesn't make any sense, even from a cold-hearted, its-only-business point of view, does it? The big picture is that all these cancellations cumalatively serve to piss off the viewers and make them weary of commiting time to any new show. If I was Rupert Murdoch, I would be bending over the executives in charge of programming and inviting them to justify all the cancellations, and suggesting that they are hurting the brand. Good shows that fail to find an audience suggests a marketing and advertising strategy that's failing rather than reason to cancel.

Fox is doing really well, it seems. They're beating NBC, and maybe even ABC as well. You're problem isn't with execs. They're interested in making money. If The X-Files makes money, that's great! If World's Deadliest Douchebags makes money, hell... that's great, too. You see, our problem is mainstream America, and the fact that we'll never be a part of it. Most people would rather see fat guys with hot wives than dysfunctional families with a closeted actor and pot-stealing magician... 'tis true.

It was called Day Break (aka Black Groundhog Day). It was a decent show and ABC pulled it halfway through its 13 week run during the Lost hiatus. They burned off the rest on their shitty online video player. I just don't understand why, if the episodes are already shot, they don't just air them. Is there some extra cost for airing them? I would think they've already paid for the episodes anyway. Anyway, this is the second season in a row where 24 lost me about 10 episodes in, and if it weren't for House and Prison Break I don't think I would ever watch Fox.

I hardly call that acclaim, but if you're into liberal* definitions, okay. I liked the idea, but every time I tried to watch the show I got bored and flipped to PBS of all things. This would have been a better movie. (Because the plot ideas only been used about a dozen times—c'mon Hollywood, squeeze some blood from that stone!)

well thats stupid. they made a huge mistake from the beginning by showing the pilot once then the night after that showing the second episode, if you missed the first episode 2 days later u were already 2 episodes behind and nobody(aside from me and some people who download shows obsessively) are gonna go find those and catch up.

Although 24 is one of my favorite shows on TV, I will sit the rest of this season out (it has pretty much blown chunks anyway), and maybe download it illegally after it airs. (So FUX will not profit from me buying the DVD.) I would urge all of you who are pissed about FOX's treatment of anything that isn't reality TV DRIVEL to join me in boycotting the FUX network also.

This show was not a masterpiece, but it held my interest and Nathan Fillion is one of the only true stars to emerge in the last decade or so. THe guy deserves to be A-listed. In fact, I really liked the cast they put together. Ah well, I hope the monkeys at Fuxx are happy. 24 has sucked this season. The only thing they have got going for them is House. They are well on their way to be the "ALL KARAOKE AND CANDID CAMERA BULLSHIT ALL THE TIME!" network. Like VH1 or something. Pathetic.

It happened again. This is a sad day. I guess it's "Pussycat Dolls" and "Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader?" from now on. I mean why even bother watching the scripted stuff when you know it'll only be around for 3 weeks? Seriously Fox, @#$% you guys! You are ruining the quality of entertainment in this country. Your only decent show ("24") is but a heartless imitation of itself these days, and now you cancel the fourth series from Minear in almost as many years. even I who was going to watch even before Fox picked up the pilot had to make an effort to remember it when its going to air. This show wasn't even a mid-season replacement. I think we're way past mid-season. People we're already locked in to their favorite shows this season and are waiting finish up the season. Fox made an effort, we all could see that, but their timing was terrible.

I just realized that Minear did Wonderfalls too, i HATE FUX even more now because I fraken loved Firefly, and Wonderfalls so Gawd damned much.
24 sux this season, i swear every season there has been a god damn spy on the CTU team, and it looks like there is a spy this season as well. This has been the worst season, and I hated the last 2 seasons as well, it can only get worse. I think it's funny they are waiting till the show is over to make the movie... I think by the time the show is over, it will have sucked donkey nuts so much that the entire fanbase will be non-existant.
I like House, but the show is not going anywhere, there is no real story arc. What little story arc there has been has only lasted like 4 or 5 episodes. House almost went to jail because of that Cop. Houses ex-wife came to work for the hospital. Dr. Aussie richkid, and Dr. Rainbow Emoheart fraked each other, and Dr. Emoheart broke Dr. Aussie Richkid's heart. these tiny arcs are weak.. Where is the show going. I mean how many patients have had necrosis, and how often do they go search the patients house for something, how many black jokes can house say to the brother..... The show can be funny occasionally, but generally it just seems like the same shit just re-wrapped and given back to us over and over again. Am I wrong?
Prison break .... season 1.... I loved seeing how his tattoo and all his pre-planning played out. But Season 2 ... on the run was pretty lame... I have a feeling season 3 will suck even more.
I'm starting to doubt if FUX has any shows that I actually like any more. Tell me again why NBC has the lowest ratings? Everybody please boycott FUX.

So Fox is dumping episodes 5 and 6 on some Friday in May. But what's going to happen to episodes 7-13? I thought I read that they were already in production on the last seven episodes.

You know I wrote this show off initially but then the weekend it aired all the reviews said it was actually worthwhile. So I recorded the 2nd episode but I've yet to watch it. This just really doesn't make any sense. I don't know how the ratings were, but I didn't hear anything the next day in regards to it getting really bad ratings ala Grindhouse and ticket sales. And usually even with bad ratings Fox gives stuff 5 or 6 airings. There has to be something political with this.

As for Drive, it is ironic that cancellation of probably one of the worst of Minnear's shows pisses us off the most. Maybe because each show has been dumbed down from the last and at this point it's on the par with shows like Lost and Prison Break, and it would have been a success if given half a chance. Can't say they did not try to advertise it, but at the same time, the ads ran for months just saying "coming soon" - so when it came, everyone thought its long since came and went.But if they are smart, they'd finish off the first 13 and put them on DVD. If the sales are decent, make more straight to DVD. Fuck fox, fuck networks in general, just sell us the crack directly. Who am I kidding, FOX would rather loose money than allow that. -

Every friend I force to watch Firefly and Wonderfalls love the shows, and most people don't remember them ever being on the air at all. I really hope All of Drive that was filmed, even if it is only 6 episodes, makes it to DVD, I'd probably buy it. I have so many canceled tv shows DVD complete series it's not funny.

As for whatever was good about the eps shown: scenes, however good they may be for snappy (by 12-yr-old-kid standards) dialogue or acting, do not make a series work.
The whole package has to be nailed down, especially characters and story arcs.
But Hollyweird persists in the belief that if some clown who blew his way into the biz can make an entertaining pitch, then the series will work.

Why should they respect the viewers? They are doing what is good for their business. But the point is that their business is NOT producing good shows. Their business is selling ad's. Making shows, good or bad, is an annoying byproduct of that. If they can make a show for less money and sell same commercials, that is ALL that matters. This is why I've been trying to advocate a direct-to-consumer business model for show producers. Bypass the networks and start a new business model, based on something like music industry(I know, i know, thats a different conversation). Make the product be the SHOW, the consumer be the VIEWER. This has NEVER been done with television in US and until recently was not very practical. There are a few pioneers in this coming up now. For example there is a new direct-to-video Babylon 5 anthology series coming up ("B5: The Lost Tales" , just went up on Amazon pre-order, last Ichecked #5 most popular DVD). BUY IT. I don't care it you love or hate Babylon 5, I STRONGLY urge you to buy it. Why? Because this may just pave the way for the viewer oriented future of the TV shows we want.A future where shows that are popular don't get canned before they are even shown -
Look for "Drive: The Complete Series" coming to DVD in a few months.

If a slightly longer miniseries was the intent of Day Break, they didn't do a good job of letting the audience know that. The advertising might have indicated that it was a limited run, but I swear it also felt like they were contradicting themselves in saying that it was a new "series" as well. There certainly were no blatant indications that it was a story that would be told completely in those 13 episodes. As such, I wasn't even interested in giving it a chance, because - once again - it was a premise that I didn't think lended itself to series television.

I guess I can erase the episode from this week off my dvr now. Oh well, it seemed like a groovy little show, but I'm not going to watch something like that, that I can't know the ending to. They should at least do a mini series to wrap it all up. It's an interesting premise.

Hold on...let's not confuse the issues here. DRIVE absolutely should've gotten a CHANCE. But its cancellation is not nearly the absolute abomination that the shaft Wonderfalls received was. For the vast majority of people who actually invest the time to watch the series, Wonderfalls is an absolute joy, something that has begged the question 'Why did I not know this was on?' more than any other series I can think of. Ultimately, in a few years, I honestly think Minear will find a home at HBO, but that may be just me wishful thinking.

The problem with Day Break, and the idea of limited run series in general, is that networks want to put high rated shows on the air. If they do a limited run series and it is a success, they will want to extend it to make more money. They promoted Day Break as a new series, as opposed to being explicit about its limited run, because they left themselves room to extend it if it had good ratings. It would have been a smart move if it had turned out to be a great show. Again I ask though, why not give Drive two more weeks to turn it around? If the episodes are already in the can and bought by Fox, they should have some incentive to give it a chance to succeed.

Hichhiker is right. The studios should explore the idea of producing and selling new TV series episodes directly to the viewer -- not just through DVD, but also through online. Imagine buying the latest episode of the Babylon 5 spin-off from iTunes or through Xbox Live. However, the trade-off is that without ads, most of these shows would only have 6 episodes per season, if that. Thus, we should think of these shows along the British TV series format, in which most scripted shows get 6 episodes per season. (So under these parameters, we could say Andy Barker, PI had a full season with 6 episodes.)

it does follow the pattern of networks cancelling good shows, even shows with good ratings.... and to contradict some ass that said that it didnt have appeal since it had low ratings.....ratings have little to do with how long a network runs a show..look at ANGEL, had its best ratings ever in its 5th season and the WB cancelled it....in contrast i wouldnt be surprised if it was cancelled because it was getting an audience and fox was nervous it would get renewed and they couldnt put on one of their rediculous reality shows on...do we really need a 2nd season of pussycat dolls, how many dolls are there gonna be, unless another is dropping out...its retarded, not empowerment

them airing unaired episodes online, watching the rest of daybreak was like watching it on TV, they were putting new episodes on weekly and i had to wait almost a month to see the finale....which didnt really answer anything....also fox never put the ending of vanished online, just left it hanging and the viewers that were watching it....drive was good, not perfect, but i think it was hitting its stride, and fox cuts the legs out from under it, typical...but we get 24 up the ass and im sure that show hasnt been good since the 2nd season

Yeah, I understand the ratings-maximizing reasoning behind it. I just think there could be some great, satisfying stories told in a limited format.The reason they're reluctant to air the two episodes is the same thinking. Yeah, they're in the can, so it doesn't cost any further money for production, but they think that whatever they air in its place will draw more viewers/advertising dollars. So effectively that is just compounding the loss.

Either way, I decided to see the movie and it was a complete shit fest - and this is coming from someone that likes Babylon 5 and Star Wars. FOX looks stupid for Firefly, which sold a whole lot of DVDs. If Minear was smart he would go to NBC which sounds like it will be keeping Friday Night Lights a horrible show with horrible ratings because the press liked it. NBC i think is dead last in ratings too.

Spent $5 million making the tv movie, then decides to air it with the highest of astronomical ratings expectations in the most competitive week of the 1996 May Sweeps, up against NBA basketball, baseball, and a cliffhanger episode of "Roseanne", instead of choosing to air it the week before instead of the throw-away flick "Tornado" that got monster ratings against no competition. End result? Fox threw away a hit series just so a throw-away flick could get beter ratings. Even Bruce Campbell and Ernie Hudson couldn't save that krap film that still airs on USA from time to time. I get cheesed off every time I see the name of that flick in the programming guides and just steam over the fact that we had to wait 9 years for the cheap-ass BBC to finally get off their duffs and bring the series back (essentially) on their own (not counting those playhatas at the CBC). But personally, I blame Rupert Murdoch.

Sure, they did post the second part on iTunes later (and not for free) and the DVD set showed how much promise that series had. "What's the Frequency, Kolchak" was damn fine writing. But of course, ABC has killed other promising shows before, like Cupid...or that show with Gina Gershon...

Of all the recent run of Minear shows, Drive was the one I thought had the best chance of lasting out the season... not because it was the best, (it was not, by any means), but because it seemed like it had enough elements to appeal to the moronic mythical viewing public that somehow rules our ratings system. Cars? Check. Hot women? Sure. Hot guys? My wife thought so. Action? yep. Humor? A bit.
It was not a great show, but it was entertaining, and the potential to grow into something even more so, once it found its voice.
So much for that. Minear clearly needs to make his next project a reality show. And I'll stop looking for compelling stories on network television. -

I am sorry but the show was dumb as hell....I downloaded it and thought it was just stupid and dull and the premise could not be stretched out so long. This s where british TV beats american TV....we know the limitations of a good show and it will only get a average of 6-9 episodes per season.

Like others here, I'd hoped to catch up with Drive, even taped the premiere... should've seen it coming. After all, I've all but stopped watching network television due to my favorite shows getting the axe in favor of lowest-denominator bullcrap, and FOX has been one of the worst offenders. (Heroes is the only thing I follow these days. It isn't Shakespeare, but I enjoy it.) I should've known better than to think FUX-- um, *FOX* would stand by something that sounded even halfway original (even if it wasn't the sharpest crayon in the box.) I'll remember this next time some commercial catches my eye... if it's on FOX, I won't even bother tuning in. Is there any chance some cable channel will pick this up, if only to air the 13 episodes commissioned? Wishful thinking, I know. Ah well, hope Fillion and Minear have better luck next time, they both deserve it.

Is why any network would greenlight any show, spend much money on doing a pilot (and in Drive's case, two pilots), and then not at least completely film a full twelve episode (half)season. I mean sure, even if it's a dud, what use is shutting down a show after four, five or six episodes? You do that and there's never going to be any opportunity to make any money from the show from that day on, but you do a full season, regardless of ratings, and then you can at least profit by selling the show internationally in foreign territories, playing it on cable, selling it on dvd and through iTunes, and so on...and you never know, maybe it'll even start picking up viewers if given a little bit of time to pick up steam, and if people know that they're going to get a full (half sized) season at least, making it worth their time to watch, even if it never goes beyond that first season effort. But no, apparently network tv is still all about the shortsighted cut & burn tactics at the first sign of less than stellar ratings, and it's not just fox either. And in years past this strategy would have caused long running, much beloved shows like MASH, The X-Files, Stargate SG-1, Taxi, Hill Street Blues, Cheers, Seinfeld, Star Trek: The Next Generation and many more to never have had a chance to become the massively popular tv powerhouses and revenue earners that they all eventually blossomed into. I seriously think more networks need to take the cable tv approach, start every new show out as a solid 12 or 13 episode order, and see where things go from there. But burning shows, as well as the viwers that spent their time investing in these new shows, it's a no win situation for all concerned. I mean think about it, every time they short shrift a new show by pulling it so soon all they really do is piss off the viewers who did invest in the new shows, and make those viewers even less likely to give the next new show a chance. And when those viewers don't give the next new show a chance because they figure it'll only get cancelled after a few weeks anyway, then of course it does get cancelled, because no one watched it, and so the merry-go-round spins on. Crazy illogical shit.

Make no mistake, Drive isn't a big loss, and it would have been nice to see them finish the run, but they're not going to keep a loser on during sweeps.So with Kiefer's new deal, does that mean his screen time will be inversely proportional to his salary, as has been the trend lately? If so, save everyone the trouble and save all his scenes for hour 1 or 24, so we all know which episode to watch and avoid the crap that the rest will be.

Doesn't make sense anymore to invest time in a supposed serial that recent history shows us is likely to be yanked. I did that with "The Nine" and "Kidnapped", but not anymore. And you know what? A lot of other people are taking the same approach. We don't watch it, because we're afraid it'll be yanked early. Because we don't watch it, it gets low ratings and is cancelled, thus becoming self-fulfilling. But what else can we do?

I only saw the ep where Fillion gets handed a Bad Ass Challenger by a shady cop. As a Mopar guy I cheered and wept at once. I love seeing classic Mopar muscle cars in the spotlight, but then wondered how many of these cars would be destroyed in production. Tarantino recently killed a couple Challengers filming Grindhouse. I try not to hold it against him.

I got exposed to FireFly when my brother passed me a few discs, and it still boggles my mind why great shows like this can't make it in a world with 300+ channels. A show doesn't have to be on "network" TV to be a success. This show should have been on FX from the start. -

I don't know why FOX even bothers to Greenlight serialized dramas when they don't even give them a chance. This show was destined to fail in the beginning. They had the Premiere on a Sunday for TWO HOURS and then had the first episode on the following Monday. If you missed it Sunday, there really was no reason to watch on Monday. By the 4th episode you could never figure who was who or what was what if you missed the first three. Whoever does their programming needs to be fired. Besides PRISON BREAK and 24, what other show has FOX given a chance? FOX you SUX!

Everyone is talking about how Fox cancelled this show in three weeks. That's in episode time, right? The truth is that they premiered this thing on Sunday 4/15/2007 and officially axed it on 4/24/2007. That's 9 frickin' days and THAT'S ridiculous. I personally missed the first half of the first episode. Tivoed it and the one after it. Then missed the third one that they showed on the following Monday because I didn't expect it that fast.
Had to download these items so I could watch them, and I STILL haven't had time to get caught up.
Way to go, Fox. You guys have set a new record in the amount of impatience. I thought you were bad with Firefly, but this is just RIDICULOUS. This show would have done great given the opportunity to find an audience. But you have to get hip to the fact that people don't just sit around waiting to see what new show Fox is going to air.
And I can guarantee that I'm not going to be doing it either. Why get emotionally invested in something you'll axe.
I'm fed up. I'm even gonna stop watching 24 over this situation. It's been getting stupid anyway.

It wasn't the best show, but it was the only new show I had to look forward to this summer. The cost of producing a pilot and putting on the air is enormous, much more than the cost of an average episode. It amazes me that I don't keep hearing about Fox execs getting fired over stuff like this. If you think a show is good enough to get a pilot, then stick with it for at least a season. Otherwise, you're just flushing shareholder money down the toilet.
I kind of knew this was going to get canceled, so I'm not sure why I gave it a chance. But I can tell you that this is the last time I will ever give a chance to a new Fox show until it's been on at least a season. And no, I don't watch American Idol Fox so you're just leaving money on the table with viewers like me. Every show that I do still watch on Fox is at a geriatric stage where they need to be canceled. That leaves nothing left. There was a time when I use to watch two to three Fox shows a night. Things started to change when they canceled Action and Profit. Before then, I almost never heard of a show that would be canceled so quickly. It's mind boggling. Doesn't anyone like money anymore? -
You people who talk about going over to HBO are on crack. HBO is almost as bad as Fox these days. Showtime, on the other hand, is where HBO was in the late 90s. They cancel too easily too (Dead Like Me?), but they are definitely on the upswing, whereas everyone will be canceling HBO in a few more weeks.

Hwo the man can continue to work with FOX after 3 aborted shows just astounds my poor brain. I remember he had said that he'd be fine with making like 13 episode mini seires but now he's not even going to get 7 epsiodes for his latest. If he sticks around, I'm going to reach the conclusion that he's either into self inflicted pain or he's selfishly unwilling to compromise the big budget in order to get a chance at longevity. Sure FOX'll put up the big bucks, but now that he's not even gettinghis half season one shots, what's the point?!

or have shows been getting cancelled waaaay too early and more frequently than they did two or three years ago. I mean, jesus christ. I don't even want to know how many shows were cancelled during this season alone. What a waste. From the ones I watched, most of them were pretty good. I really liked The Nine, and Studio 60 is fine. Is it quality? Are the shows just that bad? I don't really think so. I think that Americans have lost faith in shows. Maybe 1 out of 5 new shows actually fucking make it, so what's the point right? If networks just let show's run their course, and not think about ratings compared to American Idol, CSI and Grey's, all would be right in the world. Television just isn't about quality. It's all about ratings and money, and even though it's been about that for along time, it's gotten a hell of a lot worse in recent years. The only exceptions I've seen would be Friday Night Lights, and 30 Rock, and a couple of Fox's shows that are still on for some unexplainable reason. I've never understood the appeal of house. I thought CSI was the same shit every episode, but House takes the cake. Every episode starts with someone having a seizure, House makes witty comments for about a half hour, his crew ponder about what is wrong, they try something and it doesn't cure the person, then house does something "shocking" which saves the person every time. Garbage. NBC seems to be the best of the bunch about not cancelling shows too soon. I really hope things change soon.

Fuck Fox and the other broadcast networks. They are in a vicious circle. They are so cancel happy with new shows that no one watches them because they don't want to get screwed over when the show is cancelled. I was recording Drive until I was sure it was sticking around. Guess I'll free up some space on the DVR.

Okay, so 3 episodes aired, and that gave them an idea of how it did ratings wise... well, it would have, if they had aired the first 3 episodes over 3 weeks instead of 2 nights?! WTF? So they can decide to cancel a show before it'seven aired? Oh, right, solly me, what with the semi-decent shows coming out of there recently i forgot!

Have to say the show started well in ep1, but ep 2 for me went off the boil a little. had the woman with plastic baby shot the blonde as we'd epected then the show would have been darker and better. the chase sequences were so-so but i think they needed more bumps with the cars between contestants.
the rob the bank i thought was dumb but worse to me was the fact that the brothers were following nathan fillion's character then after he lost them... found the bank... then decided he needed help bearing in mind the brothers would have been trying to gun it back on the right course..he caught them up ???? maybe there should be like 24 a clock in the top screen flashing up when a day had ended not every hour but just day 1 or something to give you an idea of where you stand in all this. E.g when plastic baby mom was arrested then back on the road you have no idea how many hours had passed to get an idea of how far they were going or how long etc.. so it came off a bit of a jumble especially when people kept catching each other up despite these breaks from racing...confusing.
Still it wouldn't hurt fox to see it through half a season and change some bits on editing to try for better ratings - sorry tim about your series...bummer ... i still liked wonderfalls 8( -

Fox doesn't technically own it, NBC/Universal does. Anyone think if NBC loses "Scrubs" to ABC (so say the rumors) that they'll snatch "House" in a revenge move and drop it in the timeslot of whatever "Law & Order" they decide to cancel? Hmmm. By the way, speaking of ABC, let's not forget that Fox put "Drive" up against the first hour of "Dancing With The Stars", which is not exactly a vote of confidence. Though maybe since Heather Mills' leg finally gave out, ratings will drop off.

When I heard the concept I thought it seemed out of place for an intended long-running series, but would work better as a miniseries or movie. Perhaps Tim Minnear could retool the thing as a movie focusing on the Nathan Fillion character. It would need to be a total retooling instead of just trying to do a theatrical follow-up the way Serenity does. You could recast as necessary (although it would be nice if they kept Nathan Fillion for the main part - but the movie people would probably want Tom Cruise or Johnny Depp or someone like that).

Five Episodes and no conclusion would not only be anti-climatic but painful and pointless. Tim Minear and Joss Whedon should forsake Network TV and embrace HBO/Showtime or FX. Could anyone imagine them concocting a Tales of the Slayers Anthology Series on FX? Since SMG and David Boreanaz have moved on can they use some of their peripheral characters or create some new ones from The Potentials...And since How I Met Your Mother is on the bubble of not being renewed, Allison Hanigan maybe game to revisit Willow.

And what do Firefly and Drive have in common? Well, they both have (had) Nathan Fillion as lead. But, assuming that someone at Fox doesn't have a personal vendetta against Nathan, what's the connection? Well, in 24 we've got a hero that treats the President and his administration as only one step below God. If the President, or someone high enough up in the government, ordered him to cut off his own dick he'd do it. Gladly. He's a PATRIOT you see. But in Firefly and Drive, the government are the bad guys. Nathan's a REBEL, fighting against THE MAN. Not something that sits well with the Republican's running the USA's unoffical state broadcaster. Over here in the UK, Sky TV (a sister channel to Fox) often switches its rolling news channel to Fox's news feed late evening to save money. Don't know how obvious it is to you folks over there but to anyone outside the US it's like listening to Pravda before the fall of Communism! If a Fox News presenter casually commented that the sky was blue, I'd get hold of spectrometer and also get my eyes tested just to check. It's a Republican-controlled propaganda machine and nothing else. Not surprising then if that control extends to killing off anything that could be seen as "subversive".

Have you ever watched 24, I mean really watched it, not just caught a few episodes? Last Season's entire 2nd half of season plot was that the President was evil and couldn't be trusted. I am British (although I have lived in the US for a while) and therefore extremly liberal by current administration standards, but I always roll my eyes when people attack 24 as Republican propoganda... It is no more so than Bond or any other action show. 24 is built off the concept of a great strong Democrat President, the only Republican President with any real screentime was presented as either a weasel or evil. The truth is 24 is about whatever they think will get them ratings first and foremost, any political agenda is hugely down the list.
As to Fox News, it is what it is. Unlike Pravda though, it is not the sole source of information. It is most assuredly biased towards a republican viewpoint and draws Republican viewers in their droves, ie its audience is old, white, male and angry at the hippity hop kids with their jeans worn low. However, the average american viewer with his basic cable package has at least another 3 24hr news channels, as well the major networks news coverage and local news and Public TV and C-Span and, well, the point is the problem with American news media is not being Pravda (it is in fact the exact opposite) it is that each one panders to a specific audience first, rather than being beholding to journalism above all. Fox News sprang up because there was a gap in the market... If there had been a gap on the other side then a channel would have sprung up to fill that niche. America is horribly deivded politically, and everyone just watches the news that tells them what they want to hear...
And to go back to Drive, to think it was somehow cancelled because of politics is bastshit insane. It gor cannceled because as a lead in to 24 it caused 24 to have the lowest viwership in the prized 18-35 demographic for three years. That is the kind of fact that gets Fox executives fired. They are going with a much safer lead in with reruns of House. Fox are morons but their decisions are always based on money... -

Good theory, but this is also the network of "prison break" where the government are the bad guys. And you cant say "House" is too fondof authority. Besides there is absolutely no evidence government is in any way involved in Drive.
I think the reality is much simpler than any conspiracy, no one cares about quality, just quantity. If it would get ratings, FOX would air "Thats My Bush" reruns.

I love 24. The Jack Bauer Power Hour is the highlight of my week. And I didn't for a second mean to suggest that the people who make the show have any kind of agenda one way or another. I was only commenting about how it may be received by the idiots running your country, as opposed to other shows. [Disclaimer: I'm not anti-US, I'm anti-war-mongering Republicans and anti-war-mongering British-Prime Ministers called Tony Blair.] There's no way I could possibly convince you, in a simple blog post, how fucked-up Fox's news coverage and political slant looks to the outside world. I can only suggest: the next time some major story hits the headlines, especially if it makes Bush look bad - find some web or radio news channels that are run by other countries. Try the BBC World Service - internationally acknowledged, since WW2, as a source of totally non-partisan news coverage. I may be wrong about why Fox killed both Drive and Firefly. It was just a thought and I stand to be corrected. But really - 24 is the one and only single reason you should switch to that channel. Any more expose will rot your brain! (grin)

Few shows are ever given much chance to build an audience anymore. If it doesn't generate huge numbers out of the gate, they either pull it quickly, or they juggle which nights it airs, so no one can find it. Look around at the trend in programming. It's mostly "reality" tv or game shows. One, because they seem to do reasonably well in the ratings, and two, because they are very inexpensive to produce. Which translates to lower risk, greater return on investment. Since these shows really don't appeal to me, I find myself watching less and less network television. Seems we've reached the end of an era. I doubt that there's any hope of going back. As soon as the 3 shows I still watch end their run, I am done. I'll be watching movies and sporting events. Little else. Screw this.

There's an interesting parallel over here as it happens. News International, who own both Fox and Sky TV in the UK, also own the most popular daily newspaper in the country - The Sun. It's not quite at the same level as the National Enquirer but it's certainly in that general direction. It caters for right-wing reactionary types with a limited vocabulary. And famously features a daily "Page 3 Girl" topless model photo. The term "Sun Reader" is generally acknowledged as an insult. Knowing that it outsells its nearest rival by somewhere between 60-100% is pretty much as depressing as catching 10mins of Fox News. I despair for the future of the human race sometimes.

A civilized debate? Hoohzah... Again though I will point out I am British, lived there for the first 23 years of my life, so I am very aware of what the BBC is... I even worked for them briefly... Anyway, Fox isn't the BBC, the BBC can claim to be the voice of Britain, Fox is nothing of the sort, it is a voice of a certain viewpoint. That is how the US works in this modern age, a thousand channels and a thousand attempts to make money. If you watched something like ABC's evening news you would see a show that was a lot closer to the BBC news in terms of style. You are comparing apples to oranges. In fact one could argue that the BBC is a lot closer to Pravda than any American channel because of the nature of its funding and its relationship with the Government. Again I am not knocking the BBC, I spend more time on news.bbc.co.uk than just about any other site, just trying to help with misconceptions that many Brits have about certain facets of the US. Fox is a blatantly right-wing and biased news network. However it is only popular with people who already believe that viewpoint and did before Fox news ever appeared. Oh, and as to Murdoch, I don't think he is truely a political animal, instead he always creates populist entertainment with right-wing leaning tendancies, because that ties in with his desire to make money. Right leaning governments the world over tend to tax corporations a lot less and do not pass laws that limit the ability of corporations to grow bigger and bigger.

I love that show, and it's a big hit. But you'd never know it from the way Fox mistreats it. Over this last season, it's been arbitrarily pulled off the air for weeks at a time, randomly reappearing only to go away for another three weeks. Now we're in the midst of "8 straight new episodes!" as though that's something we shouldn't always expect. And Fox still runs American Idol a few minutes long every week, which sabotaged everyone's recording of House a few weeks back when they also ran House past its usual end time. In short, Fox is completely incompetent. See, Fox, here's what you do when you have two very successful shows. You PUT THEM ON AT DIFFERENT TIMES. Who are these people that have one hit with House and then yank it when Idol starts up? You can have more than one hit at a time, Fox, but you choose not to? As House himself would say, "you're all idiots." I say, move it entirely over to NBC or USA.

It got *terrible* reviews. But as no one in America reads reviews (except me), the reason the show died is because *no one watched it.* When will everyone learn that Minear is a one-trick pony and Fillion is a show-killer? It seems obvious to me - why Fox doesn't get it is baffling.

King was way before his time! In the Bachman Books collection, there are 2 different stories dealing with reality shows set in the future. One was called the Long Walk about contestants who walk across the country or die trying. The other, Running Man, was the basis for the Schwartzeneggar movie but only a 100 times better. As a side note, there was also a story about a high school kid who held his class hostage at gunpoint. Shocking at the time it was written but mild compared to today's headlines.
Too bad about Drive though. I would have like to seen it last through the summer. It's an interesting concept so I'm sure it will live on in a novel or graphic format. -
Why don't they just start making shows like this as planned 13 episode miniseries with a planned ending no real expectations of a future so they don't keep yanking these things out from under us. At least THEN the show could still be sold as an awesome DVD set. Like this, the the show isn't even a full half season! It even felt like it had an obvious ending point and could have stopped with this race and not left us all hanging. We'll never know if Fillion saves Amy Acker!!! Was she good or was she evil? Felt like Acker was ready to play her more like Illyria than like Fred too. Dangit, FOX execs have no vision--artistic OR corporate.
