A New ORDER OF THE PHOENIX Trailer Soars Our Way On Magical Wings Of QuickTime!!

Published at:  Apr 24, 2007 5:18:16 PM CDT

Merrick here...

There’s a new trailer for HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX posted at Yahoo.

This one’s rather similar in nature to the international trailer that showed up a few days back. At the moment, I’m not nearly nerdy enough to run these side by side to find the exact differences, but this may change after coffee and breakfast. Of course, this one has the distinct advantage of being presented in…you guessed it…all forms of Glorious QuickTime!

Things that caught my attention in this trailer: love the funky, enhanced color scheme of the whole film. The distinctive color palette in sequences like the wizard battle evoke a sense of Disney, and even some Roger Corman-esque fare (the turquoise lighting in the bridge of BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS' enemy warship comes to mind). This isn’t an insult – in fact I find such stylistic choices unique and cool. By the way, this is probably the only time you’ll ever see Disney and Roger Corman cross-associated – only on AICN.

And, do my ears deceive me, or is this our first sense of composer Nicholas Hooper’s work? Perhaps a cue composed especially for the trailer?

CLICK THE PIC OF THE ELECTRIC WIZARD, then discuss in the Talkbacks below!

It is indeed brilliant. Mind you, I saw the Spider-Man 3 trailer - Trailer 1 - having seen and been a bit disappointed by the movie itself. Yet that trailer is so good, it makes me want to see the film again! A bit like those amazing Phantom Menace trailers, which made you think you were going to watch some kind of space version of 'The Good, The Bad and The Ugly', mixed in with an intergalactic 'The Longest Day'.

    by cameron1

The only genuinely genius drama the BBC has made for the past 5 years. If you can get a hold of it on DVD do so. It's stars John Simm, Bill Nighy (in a scene stealing role) and David Morrisey it's an incredibly fast paced political thriller with a killer ending. The man can shoot lots of expositiony type dialogue in a way that makes it enthralling I'd say that makes him pretty perfect for this adaptation.

    by excaliburffolkes

There was a wonderful 300 page novel hidden in there between the excess. It could have been worse, several times JK Rowling has mentioned that she intended The Chamber of Secrets and Prizoner of Azkaban to be much longer novels but that her editors prevailed upon her to make substantial cuts.

Wave the wand, ride the broom, spiffy CGI effects, Dollarhyde with no nose, Quidditch tourney, old bitty in a witch hat, a bunch a guys dressed like Trent Reznor circa 1991, dragons, and an awkwad love story featuring boys and girls that AICN perverts spend weeks posting about (see posts above and below for examples). I just love how this series is maturing - so rare to see that kind of growth in a series of books. Cool. We might have a rated R movie by the time the 7th comes out, at least if they keep progressing the way they are. The studio would obviously never allow that, though. Go Harry!

While I loved Richard Harris as Dumbledore, I always was worried he wouldn't be able to pull off the more intense moments in the later books, if only because he seemed so old and frail. This is going to beat Goblet Of Fire into the ground. OK so it doesn't have action with a dragon and an underwater task but so fucking what, this is where the meat of the Harry Potter story lies. Albus... ***SPOILER*** (is it? really?)

    by gob adama

...is dead. I hope that is not a surprise to anyone on this Talkback. He WAS in his portrait and he was snoozing, so we will still enjoy his wit and wisdom. Why he HAS to be dead: The same reason Harry's parents, Cedric Diggory and Sirius will remain dead... Cheating death is portrayed as bad (only Voldemort, Pettigrew and Crouch Jr. have done it) and it 'cheapens' the heroics. I'd be very disappointed if after all the moralizing about death 'not being so bad, really' if it turns into 'cheating death is bad, unless the person is popular and likeable'. It just does not fit.

Now, on to a half-assed prediction: Bill Weasley will be the new DAtDA Teacher. He's a trained magic item finder and curse breaker *cough* horcrux *cough* AND he's got a touch of werewolf now so he can mirror Remus from the 3rd book (this book is rumored to mirror PoA).

And a question? What kind of self-important lackwit uses the wonders of the internet to (poorly) state their opinion as a fact that everyone else should fall in line with. I mean, I can accept "I think the HP movies are boring." or "I really don't see the appeal." However, logging into a topic you don't like to INFORM those that do that they are wrong (with little back up, I might add, and typing in all caps and using 'fuck' is not a well constructed argument), just seems a tad insane. I am genuinely growing curious about this.

I actually like the books, though I'd like the last few a lot better if they were shorter (this is the one that really drags, as many have said). Anyway, my last comment was book-related, not movie-related, since I stopped going to the movies after #3 proved to not be nearly as much of an improvement over the first two as claimed. I'd even forgotten that they'd already made #4 until I flipped on cable the other night and there it was.

I am not convinced he is alive... and I'm also not convinced he is dead. What happens to him is in no way consistent with the descriptions of what happens to others when whammied with the Avada Kadavra curse. Plus there is SO much talk in the book of 1) casting spells without speaking the "incantation" (or whatever you want to call it) and having to truly want to kill the person that you are cursing for Avada Kadavra to work. With that in mind, I'm convinced that even if Dumbledore IS dead... that Snape did NOT cast the Avada Kadavra spell on him. He SAID "Avada Kadavra" but actually cast a different spell non-verbally.

I guess what I am saying is that THEMATICALLY he needs to be dead or Rowling will have undermined one of her main moral lessons. His portrait will stand in for him, no doubt. As far as the effects of the AK, well, I think what we read was a little extra drama as seen thru Harry's eyes.

Dumbledore has to come back in some form

    by leesheri

Even if it is just in the painting or in some weird (behind the curtain from the MoM) ghostly way. There are too many phoenix connections to his character. He created the Order of the..., his patronus is a phoenix, his pet/companion is a phoenix. Dumbledore gave Harry the strength phoenix song gave him when he walked into the courtroom.

    Phoenix-like qualities

    by gob adama

Albus is, as I'm sure I don't need to say, a symbolic phoenix, not a literal on (and yet I say it anyway). I suspect his 'resurrection' will be in the inspiration given his students (Harry in particular, of course).

Moreso than being about children, school and coming of age (which is enough there). These are stories of generations. Literally, in the case of the many families that are featured and more abstractly in the Hogwarts Houses and their connections to past alumni. Mark my words, Albus will be resurrected via his LEGACY.

Arguement for Sirius**Spoiler for book haters**

    by dogsoup

You know, we never really got a definitive explanation what the Veil really was. All we know is it is very very bad to cross it and most likely permanent. Who ever said distinctly that if you cross it you die? That's really just assumption. Sirius crossed it and everyone reacted but no one actually said "dead". Dumbledore dead- sure I can buy that (or not depending) but I really think Sirius will be back for book 7.

Unfortunately, most arguments for Sirius are really "I want him back so {insert loophole here}." I don't mean to sound like a dick, but... he's gone. Lupin said it and I am pretty sure he knows his stuff.

Undoing these deaths would back-track on Harry's emotional development. As I said, Rowling really seems to be saying that when you live your life well and face your end nobly and heroicly that death is not to be feared. It comes for everyone in time. Even Mr and Mrs Flammell (sp?).

    Gambon vs. Harris

    by brian 2000

I have to agree with hatramroany. I can understand the reservations about Gambon, but I don't agree that Harris was a perfect Dumbledore. He played the straight-up kindly grandfatherly wizard perfectly but Dumbledore is (was) more than that. Gambon plays up the more spritely side of Dumbledore that Harris never came close to tapping into. Gambon's scenes at the end of POA are probably the closest anyone has come to getting the character--his "Did what?" response followed by him humming as he walks away is Dumbledore to a tee.

As for Goblet, I see why people would think the more frustrated/angry side of Dumbledore does not fit the character, but I think that was a decision made by the filmmakers--not Gambon's. Newell et al clearly wanted to convey a sense of danger and uncertainty, and I think that's why Hermione and Dumbledore are both portrayed as high-strung and stressed throughout the film. It makes sense: if Dumbledore is all-knowing, then he screws up big time by being dumb enough to allow the Tri-Wizard Tournament to go on as the Death-Eaters are regrouping. But if he's more uncertain about what's going on (and, as Snape says, makes the decision to "let events unfold") then its more understandable why he does what he does, and the film is more tense. So, I wouldn't fault Gambon for scenes like DBD running at Harry after the Goblet drawing.

Having said that, I think GOF is the only film to really capture the centrality of Dumbledore to Hogwarts. We see more of him and more sides of him than in any other film, and I think it works. The worried/caring look that Gambon conveys as Harry walks into the maze is pure Dumbledore.

    by occula

we need to mention him ALL THE TIME FOR NO REASON. he was just quoted as saying the reviews on this site are the ONLY ones he cares about, so let's give the guy what he wants. ps michael gambon is a magical actor. richard harris was a dear old guy but gambon's dumbledore is, indeed, vital and complex in a way i'm not sure harris' ever would have been over many years.

    by oisin5199

I'm always trumpeting Yates' Girl in a Cafe with Bill Nighy and Kelly MacDonald. Amazing film, great direction, great acting, great music. Kinda makes me wish Bill Nighy was Dumbledore. He'd be perfect. Though he did do the old man with the beard thing in the Hitchhiker's movie, one of the few great things about that disappointing film. And oh yeah, this movie looks awesome, set to blow that boring Goblet of Fire movie out of the water.

    Harris and Gambon

    by tie3456

I much prefer Gambon's performance to the one Harris gave. Don't get me wrong, I liked Harris in the role, but I agree with those that pointed out that in CS he looked an inch from death. Harris had the protective grandfather type down perfectly, but Gambon manages the sly, quirky, mischievous aspect of the character much better than Harris did. I've always said that a merger of Harris and Gambon would have been the absolute perfect Dumbledore.
I think another part of me doesn't like Harris as much in the part because I read how much he detested being in the films. I don't know why I should care about this, as it's really rather unimportant, but for some reason this fact just detracts from his performance every time I watch it. I also feel the same way now when I watch Alec Guiness in Star Wars, knowing how much he hated being associated with the franchise.

    by docpazuzu

Although I felt that the last movie took a slight dip qualitywise compared to POA, it more than made up for it in scope, visuals and the setting up of this chapter. Like someone previously said, this book needed the most editing so it may have a chance of being an amazing movie if the right things have been omitted. If the course is held until the end of the series, these films will make a fantastic viewing experience watched in order.

    by frijole

are punished more than enough in OOTP. Makes up for years of getting off light. Also, since Rowling had no idea when she finished the first book if she'd be able to write another, she felt the need to be overly generous to Harry and friends in the ending. One of the reasons it remains the weakest one.

You are on fucking crack. Not just "crack", but "fucking crack". As in, you smoke crack and get fucked up and then post on AICN. It's the only logical explanation. Okay, okay I'll make a real, albeit brief, rebuttal, re: Gambon vs Harris. You simply cannot say Harris made/would have made a better Dumbledore based on PREVIOUS films of his. All I care about is his performances in the two Harry Potter films he was in. In those, he was a tired, frail, old old man. Yes he was classy and decent, but could you believe Voldemort would be scared of the Dumbledore from the first 2 flicks? I could have sneezed near him and he would have died. The spark of mischief and the slightly "off" manner have been with Dumbledore since book 1 and Gambon plays it perfect.

Gambon does not play it perfect.

    by cameron1

If we are talking about playing it in the manner in which Dumbledore was written. Harris' gentler, subtler yet mischievious style is closer to that than Gambon's boisterous, audacious and somewhat beligerent portrayal. It's a miscasting and you can like it all you want but you can't sensibly argue it's anything like what Rowling wrote.

    by excaliburffolkes

Dumbledore. Not one bit. I don't believe first year students would be afraid of him, either, except of that maybe he'd physically assualt them or something. Harris' Dumbledore, though somewhat flawed, at least hinted at great power and intelligence lying beneath the grandfatherly exterior. Gambon's Dumbedore, on the other hand, just looks thoruoughly weak and befuddled. Gambon is a fine actor, but he was miscast. Then again, he makes a perfect bizzaro Dumbledore for the bizzaro Harry Potter the movie series has become, so maybe he was perfectly cast after all.

    Dumbledore - it's the director's fault

    by oisin5199

I tend to think that Gambon would be fine as Dumbledore under the right direction. He was perfect in the mischievous role that Cuaron set out for him in PoA. In that film, he was more of a human McGuffin than anything else. Gambon made an otherwise thankless role work. In GoF, I argue that he was poorly directed. Again, he didn't have much to do but react, and it just seemed like he had nothing to work with and didn't quite know what to do with the character except bluster. Now Dumbledore's character in OotP and the next book is crucial - especially the scene where Harry trashes his office. We'll see how he does there. If you've ever seen The Cook, The Thief, his Wife and her Lover (when Helen Mirren was at the peak of her hotness), you know Gambon can be menacing and freakin' scary - someone who would have Voldemort crapping in his robes. So I tend to think with the right director caring about character and story more than just making a video game movie (like GoF), Gambon can pull it off. I'd like to think Yates is that director.

There are a few points in the GOF book...

    by frijole

where Dumbledore is described as acting not quite himself and out of sorts and I believe it's Hagrid that even says something to the effect of "I've never seen him this upset". That being the case, I think it is less an issue of Gambon playing it wrong in the movie... and more that the scenes of the book where he's all wonky-acting ALL made it into the movie... while many of him as more docile and grandfatherly... didn't. And I still don't think he shakes Harry or "slams him against a wall" as some have claimed. He grabs Harry by the shoulders and Harry starts to trip backwards and Dumbledore pulls him back up straight.

I suppose Harris was the better Dumbledore

    by ribbons

For the fact that Dumbledore isn't supposed to be overly emotional, as portrayed in the books. When he does emote -- cry, start acting like a child (Book 6) -- it's supposed to freak you out. The gravity of those moments has already sort of been punctured by Gambon's roid rage* in the last film. He was the perfect Dumbledore in 'Azkaban,' and there were glimmers of it in 'Goblet,' but for the most part his portrayal has deviated from the way the character was depicted in the books, at least in my opinion (which I am fairly okay with, just saying). I imagine Dumbledore as being benign and mischievious, occasionally troubled, but mostly an ocean of serenity. It's hard to tell how much of that Harris was doing intentionally; calling him "humorous" would probably be a little bit on the generous side. So it's not like Harris was spot-on or anything. But I do think the most important aspect of Dumbledore's character is his calm, or his reliability, as it were -- evidenced by the fact that he was the ultimate "father figure" of Harry's that Rowling subverted in the series (unless you count Snape). And again, climactic moments in both "Order of the Phoenix" and "Half-Blood Prince" involve Harry actually seeing Dumbledore emote strongly, which makes me think it's something that's not supposed to happen often. The problem lies with Newell, to an extent -- I'm sure, as some people have said, that he wanted to prove Harry was in danger by having Dumbledore be all aggravated and tense over the Tri-Wizard-Jiggee. He didn't necessarily have to go so over-the-top with it, but fine. I get that. I also think some blame lies with Gambon due to the simple fact that he hasn't read the books, and refuses to on top of that. He (apparently) thinks that the script should be the only thing that informs an actor's performance -- which is all well and good, but as the world of Harry Potter has a huge ensemble cast, a lot of characters don't get as much attention as they arguably require. So for people who have read the books beforehand, his performance seems off. That's just my take on it. But keep in mind that I just smoked crack.

Agreed and I might add your description of Dumbledore's alleged assult on Harry fits what I thought I saw as well (tho, we seem to be in a minority there).

As I have said (in a previous talkback, I think), Gambon is not exactly the Dumbledore I read, but I find his version to be entertaining and certainly a valid variation. Harris was so spot on that I honestly found it a bit uninteresting as he gave me nothing that the books hadn't already (Coletrane's Hagrid can do the same... had similar problems with Patrick Stewart as Prof. X). Gambon, at least, keeps me on my toes.

if I were an actor, I'd agree with Gambon

    by oisin5199

about not reading the books. You have to act what's on the page, not what you imagine the character might be from another source. It's not the actor's job to read the books. It's the job of the writer and the director to get the character 'right' in the script. The actor works from what the script and the director tell him. If he tried to be at odds with those things, then that would be a very tense set indeed.

...part. Even if your intention is to heavily alter a character you need to have a working familiarity with the source material to form a basis of judgement as to which things you're going to change. Otherwise, you are no longer adapting but rather randomly making things up from scratch as you go along (something of which the latter Harry Potter movies have suffered far too much of).

...question I'd ask everyone who wanted to be invovled in the project from the director to the actors to the set decorators to the make up people to the costume designers etc. etc. is are you familiar with the source material and can you prove it to me by answering a few questions. Anyone who wasn't familiar with the source material (and particularly anyone who was against the enitre concept of being familiar with it) would be immediately asked ot leave and would in no way be involved in the production. Period.

    Gambon...

    by gob adama

...Is an older man and a professional actor. While it may do him some good, he may simply not feel his life has room to read children's books (however good they are) when the actual script he'll need to do his job off of is readily available. Again, let me say that I think he SHOULD, but I can understand why he has not.

Such a move seemed to benefit Ian McKellen who had not read LotR prior to landing the role of Gandalf. HOWEVER, LotR has a rep as an English Classic, where as HP is regarded as (merely) highly popular kid's stuff (rightly or wrongly).

    An actor's job

    by oisin5199

Well, there are definitely two schools of thought about acting here. There are some people, especially when it comes to Shakespeare, who believe that 'it's all on the page.' Did Shakespeare's actors research the myth of Pyramus and Thisbe? Or the Hollinshed Chronicles? I think not. Some people believe that method acting is bullshit, that the actor's experience and imagination are all that is necessary, while others believe in research, research, research. It's Laurence Olivier vs. Dustin Hoffman in Marathon Man. Behind the scenes, in reaction to Hoffman's 'research', Olivier says something like "Have you ever tried just acting, son?"

I stick to my guns that you might not like Gambon for his choice, but it's still a valid choice to trust your director and screenwriter and be faithful to THEIR vision. That's what he's getting paid to do. Rowling isn't his boss. The fans aren't his boss. The director and Warner Bros. are.

When you are a certified genius like Olivier was...

    by excaliburffolkes

...you can pretty much get away with anything you want. For everyone else, not so much. (And Gambon isn't in Olivier's league. Don't make me laugh.) Since you brought it up, most major play productions use expert researchers called dramaturgists to provide background material for the actors so that they know the background facts, obscure references, hidden meanings, etc. written in by the playwright pertinent to their performance. Stage acting isn't nearly as wide open and from the hip as you argue. Furthermore, no one is denying that the director and studio are the bosses or that Gambon shouldn't listen to them, only that he (and others like him) make a bad choice in not becoming at least marginally familiar with the material their characters are derived from. As they teach young artists in college, you have to know the rules before you can set out to break them.

    To be clear...

    by gob adama

I am not saying I agree with Gambon's choice not to read the books, I'm saying his mistake is an understandable one for a man his age.

And has been stated... Reading the original books is NOT his job. When you consider the disparity between book and script (ranging from subtle to WTF), one can see that there are limits. What IS his job is the SCRIPT.

Still, it might do him some good.
