NYC AICN Readers! Moriarty Dares You To See THE DEVIL DARED ME TO On Thursday, April 26!!

Published at:  Apr 21, 2007 2:12:43 AM CDT

I frequently hear complaints from NYC area readers that we don’t show you guys enough love.

I wish we had a NYC branch. I really do. It just hasn’t worked out. I live in LA, and Harry lives in Austin, and Capone lives in Chicago, and we’ve just never really ended up with that NYC piece of the puzzle.

It means we miss out on a lot of events we’d love to cover, and it means we don’t throw a lot of screenings for you guys, either. And it is unfair. It’s just the way things have worked out, unfortunately.

So this coming Thursday night, April 26th, we’ve got something really cool for you to enjoy, something that very few other geeks in the US have had a chance to see yet.

I reviewed the film THE DEVIL DARED ME TO about a week and a half ago. It’s a really crazy, fucked-up comedy from New Zealand. And you’ve got a chance to check it out yourself. I am still not sure if I’m going to be able to make it to the screening or not. I’ll be in town next weekend, but I’m not sure when I arrive yet.

Fangoria and Tony Timpone will be co-presenting this screening, so I know it’s in capable hands if I’m not able to be there. But I want you guys to go. I want you to see this before anyone else. I want you to see it with the right kind of crowd. This is the sort of movie where you should imbibe whatever your particular poison is beforehand, you should gather your rowdiest friends, and you should get ready for violence and sex and mayhem, NZ-style.

Here are the details:

Thursday April 26th at 5pm ET
Cinema Village
22 East 12th Street
New York, NY

Please arrive early. This invitation does not guarantee admission.
Seating is first come first served.

You guys say we never do anything for you. Well, let’s see what kind of crowd we can put together for this one. I’d love to be able to justify doing more NYC events, and I’d love to hear from all of you after you see this film. I’m confident you’ll enjoy yourself, and I hope I’m able to see you there.

It's the smallest theater ever. They play some pretty sweet indie flicks, but the largest theater seats about forty people.

Drew, Just open up a NYC bureau.

    by bronx cheer

Hell, I'll do it. I work on the camera side of the business, but I'd be happy to operate in some capacity for AICN if it meant that the greatest city in the world, and the region where the film business was BORN, had a chance to be represented on this site.
I'm RSVPing. Cinema Village is a great little theater. Thank you for putting this together!

    Thanks for the love, Mori.

I'm an AICN New Yorker and I try to get to as much as I can, but the truth is that there is so much that I don't hear about until after the fact. I hope I can make it to this. The theatre is a few blocks away from me but I rarely go to it. While a nice, retro, old theatre, the facility needs major work. Sound is pretty bad. But this sounds good so I'll make the trip. Thanks for the heads up. And I agree, you should open a New York branch. Bungion Out.

Hey Mori - ditto the above. I'm a writer in NYC and happy to cover events if you guys need it. Can't wait to see this flick with a good crowd.

Well first off, good looks Moriarty for hooking this up and thinking about us over here in the tri-state. Much props. Looks like a great event. Of course my luck, I have a very important meeting that day @5pm that I can't get out of. Sucks. Really sucks. But again, thanks for the NYC love and I hope folks are able to make it out for a good time. Peace.

And it is always good to see Tony. Mr Timpone hosts Monster Monday Fangoria screenings in NYC at the Two Boots Pioneer Theatre each month. A little horror fest that everyone in the NYC area should check out!

Is there enough happening in NYC to justify a bureau?

    by thelivingdoll

Maybe if this site was more geared toward live theatre and fashion shows, but as for movies, it seems kind of dry...

NYC is in the midst of a filmmaking boom

    by bronx cheer

I Am Legend. Spider-Man. Sopranos. The Daily Show and Colbert Report. SNL. Sesame Street. Letterman. Conan. And James Lipton and Inside the Actor's Studio, motherfucker. Et effin' cetera.
In 2006, NYC logged a total of 34,718 location shooting days; Los Angeles had 56,125 in 2006. In 2002, NYC registered a 14-year low of 14,898 because of the terrorist attacks on the WTC. While LA continues to experience a decline in feature film production, NYC is busy as hell.
Tribeca Film Festival...fast becoming one of the best in the country (bless you, Robert DeNiro).
One thing New Yorkers love to do is go to the movies. We don't drive to them. We walk to them. Cars are for the weak.
    Peter Parker is from Queens.
Live theater and fashion shows? Hell, this is the home of Maury Povich, dammit!
[The Lipton and Povich references are tongue-in-cheek for anyone who actually thinks I am bragging about them.]

    by thelivingdoll

...but living in LA we basically get fed the propaganda about ourselves that this is where it's all happening, and NYC is just for starving painters, heroin chic models and asshole stockbrokers.

But we LAeans don't all drive to the theatres, I for one take the subway. And fortunately for me, the Chinese theatre is one of the 3 stops that the HUGE LA subway system makes. H-fucking-UGE

thelivingdoll, you are godlike for taking the trains

    by bronx cheer

I lived in LA for 25 years, and I used the subway system whenever I could, but it seems it was designed more for tourists than for working stiffs. And don't disabuse yourself about LA...a helluva lot happens there, I know from experience. Thank to Mori, people who come to this site know that something happens out here, occasionally. I suppose it's only fair, after the bias east coasters have against anything west of the Hudson River.
Tonight I watched the very excellent film of Vonnegut's great "Slaughterhouse 5" and I am having trouble sleeping because it's still banging away inside my skull. After all these years, it's still one of the best book-to-screen adaptations ever produced.

Living in Brooklyn, always in the city. Would love to help out with anything you guys needed if you ever decided to have a division here. Considering we're one of the biggest cities in general and I already see a few people stoked for this screening, I don't think there'd be much of a problem from finding people to help out.

    Thanks again Moriarty.

Even though watching marathons of those 'babies daddy' episodes are always good for a laugh.

Sadly SNL and Sesame Street were both good in the 70's. Buying the Old School dvd of Sesame Street for myself a few weeks ago was a wise investment for my future brood.

    And myself.

    by bronx cheer

I was out there working on a series that didn't go very far, and I would poke my head into the Sesame Street stage. This was nowhere near as cool as when I was working on a Sony commercial in LA and had to drop off some artwork for my art director with Jim Henson's Creature Shop. It was in a nondescript industrial building, but once inside, I saw Kermit under glass, and some Dark Crystal and Labrynth stuff. Sorry, kids, but that was ubercool.

Do we just print out this bulletin and go? Or just go? I emailed and didn't get a response back.

Wasn't sure if it was because it was a sunday or just to go there instead.

    by bronx cheer

Since New Yorkers are not accustomed to there being any action on this site for them, this first event might not have a fantastic turnout. But give it a few tries, and you'll see us out in force.

    Guys...

    by therealmoriarty

... if you RSVP'd, I think that's that. You should be fine. Just show up and give yourself a little time to make sure you get good seats.

If I hear otherwise, like you need a confirmation e-mail, I'll post that info here this week.

And I have faith, Bronx Cheer, that even if we ARE doing this screening the same time as the NYC press screenings for SPIDER-MAN 3, people will still show up.

... I will not be in town in time to be there for this screening. I'll only by in NY this Saturday night.

The good news is that so many of you have already RSVP'd for this. It's going to be a full screening, and it'll be a blast. I can't wait for you guys to send us your reactions afterwards.

    After the screening

    by bronx cheer

There was a decent crowd, though not even close to filling the place up, but I felt that those in attendance were a receptive bunch. The filmmakers made a video greeting specifically for the NYC screening; it was funny, and made me thirsty (they encouraged us to have a beer, and even though I don't drink, they were a persuasive pair).
I won't give a review, but some very quick impressions...starts off sharp, funny, and disgusting (good disgusting) but hit a slow patch once the hero was full-grown. The visuals were much better than I expected. Thank goodness the film steered clear of sentimentality or "emotions." It started crazy-gross and finished with a bang. If movies were bars, this would be one of those bars that reeks of booze and vomit, but it's where you have a helluva time, where you get your ass kicked and like it, and go back for more.
Thanks to AICN and Fangoria for sponsoring the event. It's too bad you couldn't make it, Drew. It sounds like you won't have much time on Saturday for socializing, but if you do, let us know. Thanks again.--TC

    Another thanks...

    by arisethedemonetrigan

A fun romp. I have to agree, I brought a friend with me hoping it wouldn't be packed, but instead it was sparse. But a good crowd anyway.

Even though I had a couple behind me chatting away every so often and had to give a little look behind.

But the movie did have some great gore effects with some great laughs. Loved the intro as well.

On a side note, went to Kim's real quick to check some stuff out. Had no money, but what the hell, right? My Best Buy never got the Bava set and wanted to check out some prices. Kim's had two used copies of the Beyond tin set... 70 bucks. Did not have that money to burn.

But the point of this was to comment on something I hate with a passion. People using the term grindhouse like they knew all about it. Two guys were at Kim's while I was checking out Royal Flash with Malcolm McDowell while these guys were just looking at random movies and going, "Wow, I gotta buy this grindhouse title. It looks so quirky."

My mind exploded. Ok, I'll stop the rant.
