What The Heck Is SPLICE? And Should We Be Afraid?!

Published at:  Apr 20, 2007 9:50:34 PM CDT

Hey, everyone. ”Moriarty” here.

Vincenzo Natali is a really promising filmmaker who has yet to make his classic. I think he’s got a good eye, I like his sensibilities, and I think he’s made some entertaining film so far. But he hasn’t really hit that home run that launches him into the pantheon of working genre filmmakers.

But it’s about time someone did this sort of story and got it right, and I think this sounds like it could be awesome if done correctly. Consider my fingers crossed as you read this, sent to me by “Dr. Moreau”:

Copperheart Entertainment and Gaumont have begun casting on Vincenzo Natali’s (‘Paris, Je T’aime’, ‘Cube’) dark vision of the world of genetic engineering in which two young scientists become superstars by splicing different animal DNA to create fantastical new creatures. Ignoring legal and ethical boundaries, the scientists, who are romantically involved, introduce human DNA into their experiment and risk the dawn of a terrifying new era.

The film is being produced by Steven Hoban of Copperheart Entertainment and Executive Produced by Franck Chorot of Gaumont. Guillermo del Toro, Don Murphy and Susan Montford’s Angry Bulls shingle is also Executive Producing. Screenplay was written by Natali, Antoinette Terry Bryant and Doug Taylor. John Papsidera, c.s.a. is casting the film. Natali and del Toro are represented by Endeavor and Hoban is represented by CAA.

Del Toro said, “Vincenzo is taking ‘Splice’ to really edgy places. The moment I cringed while reading the script I knew I wanted to help him realize his vision. He understands that true horror needs to be morally dangerous.”

Shooting will begin in Toronto this summer and the groundbreaking special effects necessary to bring the film’s realistic hybrid creatures to life will be done in Paris, Toronto and Berkeley, California.

“If Mary Shelley had been born 200 years later she wouldn’t have written Frankenstein, she would have written ‘Splice’”, commented Hoban.
Chorot said, “Movies are made of emotions. Some make you laugh. Some make you cry. Some scare you to death. ‘Splice’ does it all! Gaumont is thrilled to be working with this group of extraordinary filmmakers.”

I read about SPLICE in 1997 or so

    by godoffireinhell

when he was interviewed at some festival or other while making the rounds with CUBE. I liked but didn't love any of the films he's made after CUBE. But I thought this sounded fucked up and glorious 10 years ago and I still feels the same way about it. I just hope he gets the budget necessary to realize his vision and that he won't have to make any compromises.

i remember the Splicers from "Batman Beyond".

    by boomers_lips

apparently it was trendy in Future Gotham to have animal dna/characteristics integrated into your person.

    good episode.

I have a copy of the FX test for this.

    by some dude

It was made several years ago and featured a topless chick with backwards legs and demon wings walking through an office garage. I'll check if it is safe for me to post it, I mean it has been at least 5 years.

    Deisgn work

    by brendon

I saw some design work on Dan Ouellette's website (wrote a story about it yesterday for film ick, in fact).

Creepy stuff. Shadows of Giger in one of the pictures, but very original.

I'm behind Natali 100%. He's one of the best.

I'd love to see it. Send it over to me?

I'll only share it with the world if you say I can. And you could remain anonymous if you wish.

Those blurbs from the producers have ensured that I already hate this. "If Jesus Christ had access to motion picture cameras 2,000 years ago, this is the film He would have made!"

    Natali's a good filmmaker

    by palimpsest

CUBE is a great little movie, and I really liked CYPHER. All power to him. The story itself sounds a little like publicity bullshit, but what the heck. Bring the film on.

"If Shakesphere had any knowledge of DNA he would have contacted Da vinci and together they would have written Splice" or " Given the choice, most human beings would prefer to see Splice over winning a Billion dollar lottery".
