Meryl Streep and Philip Seymour Hoffman team up for DOUBT!!!

Published at:  Apr 20, 2007 3:02:13 AM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Meryl Streep and Philip Seymour Hoffman, two of our greatest working actors, in both film and theatre. I was lucky enough to see them work together in 2001 when they performed THE SEAGULL in Central Park. They were great together there and I'm really looking forward to seeing them team up on the big screen for DOUBT.

DOUBT is a screen adaptation of the Tony Award winning play by John Patrick Shanely, who is adapting and directing the movie version for Miramax.

Meryl Streep plays a nun, a principal of a Catholic school who accuses a priest (Hoffman) of molesting one of his students. The drama escalates as the debate over his guilt or innocence begins. Sounds like a flick with great potential.

    Great Casting

I saw this Off and On Broadway last year. It is a beautiful and moving play. I can't imagine this being a film just because of how intimate and small the play is. I imagine there will be more characters and we will see the scenes that are only described in the play. Cherry Jones and Brian F. O'Byrne were incredible and frankly irreplacable in the play, but if someone had to take over the roles for the film then I can't think of anyone better than these two. I have never said the words "Wow. Phillip Seymour Hoffman really sucked in that." At this rate, I never will.

The drama escalates as the debate begins. Really?

How about a spoiler warning? I didn't know that was how dramas tended to work.

    O holy shit!

I can't wait to see this movie. Doubt is an amazing play. I'm a little worried though that they'll change the script too much.

This is an amazing play. Jena Malone?

    by adrianveidt

I saw it on Broadway with Jena Malone playing the younger, more impressionable nun. Any word on if she will be on the silver screen, too? PSH is absolutely perfect for this role, too. I, for one, will be seeing this movie. And I bet we even see it get an adapted screenplay nomination. Seriously. Calling it now.

The play was outstanding - hope this will be too

    by dasher

It doesn't surprise me this is getting made into a film. My wife and I saw the play on Broadway; it was OUTSTANDING in every respect. It's reminiscent of "12 Angry Men." Streep and Hoffman will be great in the roles, but who is directing?

    Steep? ...I guess

    by clonetrooper

I was kinda hoping that Cherry Jones would get to reprise her role.
I do love me some Hoffman, though.

    Overrated Play

    by plum

Cherry Jones was magnificent, as I'm sure Streep will be, but DOUBT wasn't even the best play of its season. THE PILLOWMAN was better, and GEM OF THE OCEAN better yet. But DOUBT had the advantage of playing when we had priest pedophilia on the collective brain, so a well-constructed but unexceptional piece got hailed as a masterpiece. Anyway, I hope the movie expands the secondary characters. At least Hoffman should be better than the also highly overrated Brian F. O'Byrne.

    Philip Seymour Hoffman?

    by gozu

I really love his work, but the priest in question is supposed to be a supsicious character who seems just as likely to be innocent as guilty. This seems like, "Well, we need a child molester and Dylan Baker's doing another Spider Man movie (JUST TURN INTO THE FUCKING LIZARD ALREADY!), so let's go with the other really creepy guy from 'Happiness.'"

I just read it and I have to agree with you. Shanley is an amazing writer, but I found the ending to be disappointing. Still, Streep will no doubt (ahem) make it sing. That woman really is the greatest ACTOR of our time.

    There's A Great Part...

    by rebeck2

For a middle-aged black actress as well. Just one long scene, but pivotal and powerful. I wonder who will get that... Anybody but Angela-I-Can-Only-Play-Anger Bassett, please.
