Musical Mania Continues!! FAME Really Will Live Forever And Ever (And Ever)??

Published at:  Apr 18, 2007 11:46:58 AM CDT

Merrick here...

MGM’s gearing up for a remake of FAME. It’s already being scripted, but they’re keeping details under wraps for now. Because, you know, we don’t have the gist story already.

Says Rick Sands, MGM COO:

"We'll update it, (but) we'll still keep some of the songs. The script is being written right now, but we are keeping it under wraps. There will be a strong musical component, though,"

…in this here article.

Oh! Maybe it’ll be set on a space station, where angsty alien teens learn to work together through the power of song and music - but a bigbad from the outside wants to blow up the facility to thwart universal harmony! This must surely be part of the updating their talking about, no?

Looks like musicals are back in fashion (if only just a bit), with the success of DREAMGIRLS, Tim Burton’s SWEENY TODD in production, HAIRSPRAY releasing this Summer, and CHICAGO Director Rob Marshall’s recently announced re-teaming with the Weinsteins for NINE. Does ACROSS THE UNIVERSE count as a musical? Probably so.

Now, if only someone would get that damn BATMAN musical going, all would be right with the world.

Really.

It would.

    This Will Be Incredible

    by pooter the clown

The new Fame can't be an honest look at a performing arts school. We need a gangsta thug prodigy in need of direction, and we need an uptight upper east side ballerina for him to bump uglies with. We need a nerdy asian pianist who just wants to make trance and house and unleash his inner coolness. I also would like to put in a request for a tone deaf skinny jewish kid who's vocal limitations are a result of insecurity which will be overcome to reveal an amazing r&b talent. Can we have a spicy hispanic girl? Can we get some wacky gay guys flouncing and mincing and throwing barbed comments? And what musical would be complete without a BBBW to belt out the big songs. Bonus points if she hooks up with the skinny Jewish kid. This will suck so good! Oh! Oh! Don't forget the Sanjaya. He can replace the skinny kid if necessary. Director: Okay Sanjaya. Pretend not to be gay. Action!

Merrick: I think the Batman musical is dead.

    by barry egan

And with Jim Steinman writing the songs for it, maybe that is a good thing. I read somewhere that some of the music he wrote for it wound up on the last Meat Loaf album....

the batman musical songs were terrible and yeah, some of them ended up on the new meat loaf album which is also terrible. so i think its safe to say the batman musical is dead.

Senseless IMHO, Parker's is of it's time, and a classic

    by killakane

They should just make a new movie musical without cashing in on the name (but of course that's the point)without the soul and edge of Alan Parker's original (those performances were razor sharp), it'd be so much navel fluff.

Batman & Robin : Bollywood musical.....

    by wowsah156

I always thought that the Schumacher awfulness that was Batman & Robin was a bolywood musical in disguise. The fight scenes reminded me of bollywood dance routines. Put a bollywood song to the fight routine and you'll see what i mean.

Had a rethink .Get Trey Parker and Matt Stone to write and direct it. " Hey I am Famous" "Hey its good for you" , "TV taught me everything about you", " The Toenail song", "Trouser Puppets". The insane factor would be nuclear on this. Parker & Stone for "Fame"!!

The school doesn't even exist anymore

    by brendan3

Performing Arts High School (the real school they shot the film in and about) just outside then seedy Time's Square, has been closed since the mid 80's. It moved to a nicer uptown area and joined with the school of music and art to become the LaGuardia School of the Arts. The point is that there is no longer a school for struggling performers in the heart of Time's Square Theater district. Hell, there's barely even a theater district anymore.
