Raimi Comments on THE HOBBIT rumors - ramifications for SPIDER-MAN 4 - EW has the story!

Hey folks, Harry here - there isn't a lot of info here - but Entertainment Weekly sat down with Sam Raimi, Kirsten Dunst and Sony's Matt Tolmach - and got the beginning comments of what is sure to be an oft inquired about story. That of Raimi leaving the SPIDER-MAN franchise to do THE HOBBIT. As far as I know this is the first time that Raimi has commented upon the rumors - and Kirsten comments on what she'd do if he left SPIDER-MAN. Check out the house of dominos...

From EW.COM On the eve of what is expected to be the biggest Spider-Man yet, Entertainment Weekly learns that director Sam Raimi is seriously considering directing The Hobbit—a choice that could potentially leave Spidey 4 without a director and, says Kirsten Dunst, a leading lady. Raimi’s name has been floated in connection with The Hobbit ever since a very public dustup between Peter Jackson and New Line chairman Bob Shaye left the Lord of the Rings prequel without a director. Raimi went on the record for the first time about his potential involvement in the project during an exclusive interview with EW’s Steve Daly for the magazine’s Summer Preview issue, on stands Friday: “Peter Jackson might be the best filmmaker on the planet right now. But, um, I don’t know what’s going to happen next for me right now. First and foremost, those are Peter Jackson and Bob Shaye’s films. If Peter didn’t want to do it, and Bob wanted me to do it—and they were both ok with me picking up the reigns—that would be great. I love the book. It’s maybe a more kid-friendly story than the others.” Dunst says she hadn’t heard any rumors about Raimi and The Hobbit until EW raised the subject in an interview. She says she can’t imagine returning for Part 4 without both her director and her costar: “It’s disrespectful to the whole team, I think, to do that. And audiences aren’t stupid. It’d be a big flop without me, Tobey, or Sam. That would really not be the smartest move. But they know that already. [Sony chief] Amy Pascal would never do that.” Maguire has already expressed his ambivalence about returning for another sequel. Sony’s President of Production Matt Tolmach tells EW that the studio is cautiously optimistic about retaining the team that launched the Spidey franchise so spectacularly: “Listen, we’re making Spider-Man 4. Our hope, dream and intention is to do it with Sam. But I don’t have a crystal ball.”

    Spidey 4 Casting Snafu

    by chiahead

Ok first off, Dunst's leaving would hardly forbode less boxoffice. Not sure who her enablers are, but she hasn't made a decent film since, well, her first. Although I did like Bring it On.. whatever- What I think would be uber cool is if Maggie Gyllenhall replaced HER ass on Spidey 4 (she's good at that.) And then, while we were at it, we got JAKE to play Spidey. How fucking hilarious would that be? I mean, he's already kissed a dude on screen, he might as well go whole hog and kiss his sister. I hear Lucas is looking at them for a digital remastering of the original trilogy...

    What SONY will do....

    by Jobacca

I fully expect Spiderman 4 to be an "Ultimate Spidey" type of thing-they will get an up and coming director, younger actors to play Peter and MJ,and sign them all to a 5 picture deal for peanuts. SONY has made a fortune off this franchise, but no way will they shell out the bucks to get Raimi,Maguire, and Dunst back for part 4.

    George Burns

    by Frank Black

It is indeed a shame George Burns isn't alive to take the Spiderman role, but one could only imagine how glorious that could have been. (SIGH) The Spiderman movies are a roller coaster because I get really excited during the build-up towards a new one and then feel a little bored while they are happening. Sam Raimi made some fun Evil Dead movies and I enjoyed The Gift and A Simple Plan a hell of a lot more than the Spiderman movies but him on The Hobbit, um no thanks! (I'd much rather see Peter Jackson do it and I feel pretty lukewarm about him anyway. More family fun, over-produced studio films based on comic books sound pretty uninspiring. These days I think I would rather see a mess of a film by a coked up director than an over-polished commercial disguised as a movie. Am I alone or are people really that excited about Spider-Man and The Hobbit?

  • April 16, 2007, 4:48 p.m. CST

If Sam had just killed off MJ in Spidey 3...

by Childe Roland I told him too, this wouldn't even be an issue.<p>Kidding.<p>Frankly, I've always hoped Spidey would be a three-and-out franchise. And everything I've heard about this third film indicates that it would be a helluva note to go out on.<p>I think Sam is an infinitely better director for The Hobbit than Jackson (and I love Jacksons Rings movies, so don't call me a hater). I just think he has an understanding of what that book is that Jackson has not demonstrated at all in his discussions of how he'd handle it.<p>As for Dunst, wow...she thinks an awful lot of herself, huh?<p>Look at what they (Marvel) are doing with the Hulk franchise. Flushing everything and (apparently) starting over. I'd hate to see that happen to Spidey, but it's not like the suits haven't demonstrated the willingness and the capacity.

Is a fuckin ugly snaggle tooth ho, worst fucking thing about the spidey films. Tobey was a good peter parker, but he aint the ONLY good peter parker. The only thing that would be a bummer would be losing Raimi, and even he could be replaced with another ballsy director, and voila...a great Spider Man 4.

  • April 16, 2007, 4:56 p.m. CST

    I think Dunst...

    by Mosquito March

...overvalues her importance to the franchise, as well as Tobey's. Personally, I haven't been wowed by either of them in their roles. I don't even really think Raimi has knocked these out of the park. Some of the action sequences are really fun, but overall, the movies have focused on the back-and-forth relationship between Peter and MJ, and I'm really fucking BORED with it. That stuff is important, but it seems like the action takes a back seat to two very stiff and uninteresting actors. And, somehow, Raimi managed to leech the humor out of the character. His interpretation of Peter Parker is a dour sad sack who's constantly getting pissed on by the world and a fairly ugly redhead. Tobey plays a dour sad sack really well - that's his specialty - but that's never really felt like Peter Parker to me. The thing that kept me reading the comics were the wisecracks that Spidey made to cover up the fact that he's scared. I've always envied those who can deliver a stinging oneliner when some jerk is fucking with them, either to cover the fear or to make the badguy so mad that he drops his guard. Spidey's sense of humor is a major component missing from these films. Spider-Man movies should be fucking hilarious, you know? So, I'd personally be thrilled if they found another team who had a better handle on that.

    by Jobacca

totally agree with you about the humor. After seeing Spiderman 1,I commented to lots of folks that it was a better Batman movie than a Spiderman movie. Peter Parkers life IS a living hell and he IS a sad sack, but when he puts that mask on he should be a whole different person. I think Raimi and company did a great job with the Peter Parker side of the character but totally dropped the ball on the characterization of Spiderman.

Why not just WAIT a few years and then do Spidey 4?

    by Johnno

I can wait... it'll give Sam more time to come up with something great while working on the Hobbit. Tobey can do some other shit and by then maybe he'll miss the role and wouldn't mind coming back. And Kristen will be back if they both are. And they'll be much odler and maybe we'll get some more mature spidey storylines. Or hell! If they're already onto Venom in the 3rd film, why not just go ahead and do the clone saga? Have another actor who looks close to Tobey be his clone and be the scarlet spider, and then take on Spidey's role for the nexr films. They don't have to look the same. If Spidey can now shoot webs organically then we can have an unidentical Ben Rielly or whatever his name was... Hell we can even do that cool Spider hunt saga with the whole city going after spidey, throw the punisher in, maybe even go the Maximum carnage route and hell the possibilities are endless... We can have a much more mature spidey if we hold out on spidey 4 for awhile to distance itself from the original trilogy. You don't even have to number it 4. It'll be like batman begins except not a reboot but a whole more mature continuation from where spidey 3 left off years ago... different cast and all, just say they're older and years have passed and Spidey is a more experienced hero! You can even just start out with a sinister 6 using villians spidey fought for all those years we didn't see... this can be a good thing!

Spidey could go on WITHOUT all those people!

    by Red43jes

Look- I know all of ya have loved the trilogy. Me too. But in terms of keeping the character going, we've had different James Bonds, so why not move on to different actors and creators? Look, another way of looking at it...all of us that read comics have seen creative teams come and go. Why does a book remain successful if one creative team has gone and another comes onboard? They STILL keep us entertained. Furthermore, if Rami doesn't do Spiderman 4, maybe it wouldn't be the worst thing to happen to it. And if Dunst doesn't come back, well, the artists for the comics didn't always draw Mary Jane the same! Lets not take this so freakin' serious! Its a movie based on a fun comic book. -Red43jes

    Spidey & MJ

    by Wormie

I would totally be fine with another cast for these movies. Raimi seems obsessed with presenting Peter as the nerd from the early Lee/Ditko issues. Any comics fan knows that Peter became less geeky after leaving high school (which he did halfway through the first movie). He always has a hard time and bad luck, but the comics' Parker is not the geek Maguire plays. Plus, of course, comic book Spidey constantly comes out with wisecracks, but movie Spidey doesn't. I'm always surprised that so many fans say Raimi and Maguire totally get the character, when their version doesn't seem to match with the character I've been about reading about for 25 years. Also, the comics' MJ is a sexy party girl with hidden depths, not the whiner Kirsten plays.

Ie maybe he he goes to curt connors and asks for an anti-dote, to kill of his arachnid dna. He goes back to being peter parker. but there is a twist, MJ is pregnant with a girl.......thus giving us a potential spidey spin off somewhere down the road.

    by kinghenryVIII

and all, mainly due to the fact that Rami did the Evil Dead movies and those, in my book, are just plain fun. The effects are horrid (in some cases) and exactly what was written above - the action takes 2nd seat (though #2 had a killer clock tower / subway car scene). Dunst should shut her trap, alluding to tha fact that she in particular binds the movie together. She CAN be replaced with just about anyone .... just during tryouts make sure the new MJ does the nipple busting rain kiss. I love me some fem dots!

They should do one of two things...

    by pjdon

One. Wait 4 or 5 years or more then have Rami and co come back and do another one. Letting all the characters grow up and the world change then have a fresh feeling sequel. As much as i love the 1st 2 films and can't wait for the 3rd i don't really want to see it go on and on and get stale.<p>Two. Wait a few years and start again, make a new version with different sensibilities, a different angle. New actors, new look etc. Thats what they do in comics, have several versions of each franchise running, trying different ways of doing the same thing. I love Rami's vision but that doesn't mean another director couldn't create something compleatly different and equal. <p>It's the same as the way i feel about re-makes, i welcome different artists creating works on the same idea, each one defined by the time in which it is made. We never complain that people still put on new productions of Shakespear's work or that a lot of artists paint similar things. The basic story line or concept of a film is simply a skeleton on which a thousand different ideas can be built.

    The Hobbit and Spidey....

    by Seany-Wan

Let's face it, Sam is an awesome director and even he agrees that Peter Jackson should do the Hobbit. I think New Line should make peace with Peter Jackson and get him to make the the Hobbit. If he is not on board, then ( we can assume) Ian McKellan and Andy Serkis will jump ship too. Their absence would hurt more than Kirsten's. And Kirsten, sorry darlin, but as long as Toby is in the game, the fans will still come out in droves.

Spider-Man 4? Who The Hell Even Wants To See #3?

    by Buzz Maverik

One knocks you out. Two is: an okay sequel. And three is...e-fucking-nuff. It's a television series at this point, as rapidly as they show up. I'd much rather see Raimi on THE HOBBIT simply because he hasn't done that. And it'll be a long time before a SPIDER-MAN movie is interesting again. Everybody is seizing on what Kirsten Dunst said, which was a dumb thing to say. Sorry, Kirstie but every drama department at every major university has at least 5-10 girls at least as attractive as you who could handle the part of Spider-Man's girlfriend. And Tobey Maguire has done well in the role, despite being too old for it to begin with. Gyllenhall could do it, or they could retro-fit it and go younger with Joseph Gordon Levitt or Shia LeBeouff.

Would be perfect if they went with him being younger. O'Connell is too old (he's a year older than Tobey,) but I still think J O'C would have made a good choice over Tobey originally, but that ship has passed. J G L would be a great recast. Shia is too overexposed, and J G L is a better actor.

I'm right with you guys. The humor element has been sadly missing from these films. When it's there it's usually humor at Peter's expense. Maybe because Spidey's wisecracks are lengthy and usually during fights they wouldn't work on screen. Most superhero films have lacked decent humor. When they try, it's cheesy one-liners. What they usually miss is the fact that the hero's humor covers up something else, lack of self-confidence, feelings of inadequacy, etc. Humor should come out of characterization. Same way they missed the boat by making Iceman a broody boy in X-Men instead of what he is in the comics. In my opinion, the only one to come close isn't even from a comic book (well, he is now!): Xander from Buffy. His character used humor in just the way our favorite wise-ass comic characters do, clever and funny but as a defense mechanism. If only Spidey or Iceman were more like that. Maybe they'll get it right if they ever do Deadpool.

actually has a better figure for spidey. As much as i love Toby he wasn't spindly enough. I want a spidey who looks like a spider when he moves. He doesn't need really big muscles he has super powers. He should always be crouching and crawling as apposed to standing up straight. Jerry O'Connel would have been far too bulky for the role.

Superhero flicks. The Amazing Spiderman staring Joe G Levitt, The Incredible Hulk staring Edward Norton, The Dark Knight returns directed by Frank Miller on green screen with someone like Kurt Russel as Batman. <p>If they started doing this then maybe hollywood would realise they could have succesful movies without trying to drain every last drop out of the same talent until they ruin it. <p>I'd love to see a new actor try Spidey every few years.

    by spaceworlder

Sorry, but it's a fact.<br /><br /> There's no way Sony would find a couple with the kind of onscreen chemistry Tobey and Kirsten have, much less a director with the kind of genuine enthusiasm for the material that Raimi has. If Sony proceeded to make a part four without these key players, it'll probably end up like X3 or every other franchise-killing sequel in the history of comic book movies.<br /><br /> Kirsten is right, and y'all whiny nerds know it. That's why you be doing all this dissin' in these talkbacks.

I agree, I want Raimi back. But MJ whines too much and seems to have no balls as a character. Also, she's just not hot enough. MJ is like a goody goody in this. Their chemistry is barely believable as well. And with Peter Peter-.Spiderman is not only a transformation in outfit but a transformation in personality. As Spidey he is witty but as Peter arker hes a fuckin dork that you really wanna punch in the face. I can dig that for a few but I hate his face. Forty-five years of comics and she thinks it will fail without her or Raimi? There are plenty of great directors who could take over the series. "Is Arnie supposed to be a robot?'<P>The reason why it is good to have Parker as a bit of a geek is that it makes him more relatable to. Most of us are cooler than him and it allows us to see things from his level and makes his alter ego more of a juxtaposition.

    Dunst hate

    by starscream1

While I certainly think Ms Dunst might be just little full of herself, I have to give her credit for saying it. Yes, of the three, she'd be missed the least but, like it or not, she'd still be missed. As bad as anyone might think she is, who really wants to see a new actor in the MJ role for the 4th film? Who's to say they'd be better? We all know the Hollywood machine. The chances of them casting someone truly good are slim at best. We'd probably end up with someone just as annoying... only there'd be the added distraction of thinking "that's not MJ" or "Oh yeah, that's MJ now" the entire time. If it's possible and it doesn't severly impact the integrity of the film (X-men 3 - Halle Berry's expanded role)keep the original team together.

The closest we got to Spidey quipping well was in the wrestling ring:"did your husband make that for you", i thought that was just the beginning but it was the beg and end, apart from the witticism of "Heres your chaaange!" I understand how it would be hard to co ordinate during fast action, but they could fit it in somewhere, taking the piss out of Jameson (we get that once, 'let mom and dad talk' thats all right?). If we don't get Bruce Campbell as Mysterio- even if it's just for a 15-minute segment in the beginning of a movie- I'll be mad. If we don't get the Lizard after all the Doc Conners stuff, I'll be mad. Grab some old, menacing actor for the Vulture. Get some big, dumb hunk to play Rhino. I don't care about Dunst- Hell, she was my LEAST favorite casting choice! Tobey could go, too. Spider-Man is bigger than the both of them. This series could go on for years, like Bond films. by performingmonkey

What would be the point in Raimi returning for the fourth? It ain't happening. He's spent enough of his life on the series. Sure, let others continue and rape the series, the fourth will bomb then there'll be direct-to-the-shitter or a series or something whilst Raimi gets on with something worthwhile. It's interesting that he comes out and says he WOULD like to do The Hobbit. However, he won't do it if Peter Jackson still hopes to direct, which he probably does but not under New Line. Once the rights leave New Line Peter will be able to get stuck into the two movies he's gonna do. If New Line handed it to anybody else now, even Raimi, it wouldn't work out right.

Try to suck it out sequel after sequel with a different actor every time playing the hero...and you get absolute crap. If Tobey, Sam and Dunst want out, then end it all right there and let the franchise RIP with some dignity.

First the best villain would be Doctor Doom, and they could do Doom right as a big fuck you to FOX. AS for the Hobbit, Sam is the only choice. Peter Jackson should be kept as far away as possible. Well maybe Guermo Del Toro... someone that would be faithful to the book vs a White Council scene, etc.

KIRSTEN DUNST IS A FUCKING IDIOT if she thinks that

    by wolvenom

To quote her, "And audiences aren’t stupid. It’d be a big flop without me, Tobey, or Sam. That would really not be the smartest move."... TO THINK THAT IF SHE LEFT THAT NO ONE WOULD GO SEE SPIDER-MAN 4 HAHAHAHAHAHHAHA YOU FUCKING DUMB BITCH! IF YOU LEFT A BILLION MORE PEOPLE WOULD GO SEE SPIDER-MAN 4. As for Toby and Raimi... As long as the director isn't bay, anderson, or boll I'm pretty sure we'll all still go see fucking spider-man 4. Its like directing wiping your ass. There's not a whole lot of process involved with directing what is a surefire fucking success and money maker. You take the toilet paper, wipe your ass, and flush. As for not having Tobey who gives a shit. We need a younger more smart talking spiderman anyway.... not to say i dont like tobey as spiderman but im not adverse to a new one. SO SHUT YOUR FUCKING TRAP KIRSTEN DOUCHEBAG UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT YOU SNAGGLE TOOTHED SHE WITCH.

When given a choice to do two different films

    by INWOsuxRED

a director may only do one, ever. If Sam does The Hobit, he could never ever do another Spider-Man film again. Its in the fucking constitution! Or maybe he could do one, and then the other.</br></br>Spider-Man is bigger than any human working on it. In 150 years, they will probably be making Spidey movies or live action downloads, or whatever, and all the people in the current version will be dead. They won't stop making Spider-Man because Topher Maguire dies. Nobody is "needed", least of all ONE OF Peter Parker's many love options. Lets see, Dunst, just in this continuity there is Betty Brant who is cooler than you, the skinny girl that lives in Peter's appartment complex who is much nicer and easier to sypmathiZe with than you, and GWEN STACEY(who wasn't killed by the Green Goblin!) Obviously the Black Cat is another route they could take. Or they could recast M.J., with an actress who actually gets the character right. Or they could just do an action movie where the movie is driven by action oriented conflict rather than driven by Peter trying to date Mary Jane. Maybe Spidey says "I should get back home to M.J" at some point, but the action is so intense that he can't get home to see her. Or she could be away for the week trying to be an actress in Hollywood. Dunst, they could write out your character and nobody would notice, and everybody knows it except for you.

    Gordon-Leavitt as Spidey isn't a bad idea.

    by Orbots Commander

A few years ago, Jake Gylenhall would have been good, but he may be getting a bit long for the tooth for the role ---that is, if the studio wants to keep Parker and MJ as young high school or college students. You could tell stories of an older Spider-Man where then Gylenhall or Maguire would be appropriate. Honestly, I don't see Raimi sticking around for a fourth film. I'm assuming a guy of his talents is chomping at the bit to do other things. Let's just hope that Sony is smart enough to hire on some other talented director who has a rising stature that isn't Ratner or McG.

For all the dudes who say kirsten dunst is hot

    by wolvenom

You need to fucking get out of your basement and meet some real women. A sad misconception about some people that post here is that they think that everyone else posting here is some kind of pasty pimply infested porn addicted troll living in their parents' dilapidated dark dank basement and that they've never dated a woman let alone given one a good boning. I bet the majority of people who post here are family people, have great jobs, and just go to this site for geek movie news. After all its become a lot more mainstream to be geeky and like things like star wars and lord of the rings. Its not just relegated to the dark corner of the universe where many dorkified milhouses conglomerate and discuss who could beat who in a fight, snake plissken or he-man? Thus, I THINK KIRSTEN DUNST IS A SNAGGLE TOOTH BITCH AND THE DUMBEST ACTRESS ALIVE. I've gotten better pussy on the street corner four blocks from my house.

Out of the three, Sam Raimi is the most irreplaceable. Then Tobey Maguire (Wait...There's Jake Gyllenhall, right?) and then there's Kirsten Dunst. It sounds like we were going to lose Tobey anyway, so if Sam ends up on THE HOBBIT, I'm afraid we'll just have to settle for one of the 1,347,945 other actresses currently working in Hollywood that could fill the role of MJ. Thanks for the memories, Kirsty.

I've heard Dunst talk about basically the same thing before. Her point was not that she was essential, but that that mixing up the current team wouldn't work. In other words, replacing one actor and not the other would be strange. Maguire working with another MJ or her working with another Peter, etc. Stop jumping on the Dunst-hating bandwagon. And stop perpetuating that changed, inaccurate "a flop without me" quote. How about we just consider it a nice thing to have someone in Hollywood talk about who they're working with as a "team"? I'm getting so sick of the geek need to hate everything. Just keep playing into the Simpsons' comic book guy stereotype, dumbasses.

"...It’d be a big flop without me, Tobey, or Sam...."

    by Freefinger

Ok.. First, Dunst needs to figure out that the one bad choice in casting for the roles in the Spiderman Franchises is her. <P>Tobey was one of the good fits for Parker and Spidey, I'll give 'em that, then Franco for Osborne, I don't think they could of chose a better actor, Same for Molina as Doc Oc, and Dafoe for Goblin (should've kicked the Goblin suit right off the set but the actor choice was good). Heck Harris is great has aunt May, and Haden Church and Topher Grace will need to pull their respective roles in the next chapter, but I can see why they were cast.<P>Dunst is the one choice I’m looking at and saying to myself “This ain’t no girl that will turn heads walking down the streets… That ain’t no Mary Jane!”<P>If anyone one of the cast members needs to sit the next couple of films out, it’s her.<P>Sony can replace anyone anyways and make a profit of the next movie. Like a lot of people said, Jake G could be a good choice, or I’m even thinking that if they go for a little more bulk and an older 30ish look to Peter, Jamie Bamber from Battlestar Galactica has that look that could make Peter a little older than the College years. They could move forward a couple of years on the character with this guy. But that’s just a personal thought on the Peter Parker Subjects.<P>Dunst, hell about any 6 out of 10 stars redhead actress could fill in and make the character more attractive that those weird teeth and that crocked eye of hers that just screams out when your sitting there trying to watch the damn movie.<P>Raimi did thing to the characters that a lot of people didn’t like, the organic web just to mention one. But he still did a decent job in some of the character’s traits. Yet he too could easily be replaced by another director, Sony has a bunch of them on stand-by for a franchise like this. Who would’nt want to go for a billion dollar franchise that can’t go wrong, unless you change the color of the costume, take away the spidey emblems on his back, make him disappear for 7 years and then make him a voyeur spying on his ex-girlfriend that had a kid with him that she just loves to put in the middle of dangerous situations and a bunch of shitty things like that. No, they’ll leave that for other franchises. I think Stan Lee’s approval of the Raimi changes was a good choice. They didn’t go way off, so anyone coming in this project doesn’t need to re-invent the wheel to make the franchise good. They just need to continue what is already in play.<P>Hulk is getting a facelift so they don’t need to continue the dramatically incorrect portrayals of the character by making the Hulk a gene defect in Bruce, or his father being the same way or all those little things that just didn’t make it a great movie. They know that it need to be done from the start all over again and I’m guessing they didn’t like that.<P>WB are basically sleeping at the wheel. For a movie that should’ve beaten Spidey’s opening record they barely got their money back, and they still approve of Singer for the next one.. One that I won’t be making the same mistake, I won’t be buying the 10$ ticket this time around.<P>Spidey only needs to move forward. Whether Tobey will be asking way too much money, or that my wishes of Dunst being unable to continue with the series or Raimi jumping aboard the biggest walking franchise in history and not coming to do one more, I’ll be there buying the next 10$ ticket. I’m betting Sony or Marvel will not give this to a Director that could potentially kill it like Joel Schumacher did for the Batman franchise, which was still sorta working even after the whole Penguin story. Schumi just blew it apart, and I’m betting Marvel isn’t about to that to Spidey.

if you think that is all it took to make the LOTR ... if you think it was just "luck" then you are a complete and utter knob who doesn't have much going on in the brain department.

I like Dunst in certain pictures like Marie Antoinette.

    by superninja

She is all wrong for MJ. MJ is tall and gorgeous and acts confident. Dunst never seems confident she seems gamine and insecure, kind of a toughness to her, that is part of her charm as an actor. But that's not MJ, with MJ that is all interior, not readily viewable on the outside.

  • April 16, 2007, 10:34 p.m. CST

Dunst is very defensive because she keeps getting

    by superninja

roles where it calls for someone more beautiful. Dunst is average looking, but she is a good actor. She was supposedly cast as Debbie Harry in a Blondie biopic and when the fans went through the roof, she said that Harry approved her for the role so complain to her. Dunst is nowhere near pretty enough to play Debbie Harry in her prime.

I think Tobey is boring as Spider-Man, but he kind

    by superninja

of allows you to plug into him because he's like an avatar or something. Like he reflects the audience's feelings. Except for mine, I kept hoping he would drop MJ in 1 and I was really made a Doc Ock in 2 when he didn't drop her, either.

LOTR is adequate. There are some miscasting issues, and he went too far with the effects when it should've been more personal in the way it was shot. The Hobbit is even MORE personal, intimate and needs atmosphere (which LOTR lacked in my opinion). Give The Hobbit to Cuaron already!

The first film is a shining example of Hollywood B.S. filmmaking... Seriously, filmmaking at it's worst. Horrible predictable story, abhorrent effects, terrible's all there. by IndustryKiller!

Considering that its common knowledge that in like a year the right revert from New Line to a company that has said publicly it would hire Peter Jackson. jackson made this franchise through blood sweat and tears and Raimi taking it would be equivalent to stealing someone elses art. I could see a nobody director that wants to make a name for himself taking the project but not someone clearly well established with enough clout and good will to make just about anything they want like Raimi. C'mon Sam, do the right thing and let the right go back to Jackson, who deserves to make this film on his own terms.

Kirsten Dunst is the worst thing about the Spider-Man movies. I was desperately hoping the rumors about Mary Jane being written out in favor of Gwen Stacey were true. While we're at it, Tobey McGuire doesn't bring that much to the table. The franchise would definitely be hurt if they lost him (unlike if the lost *gasp* Kirsten Dunst!), but I personally wouldn't care much.

    by ckone

I would imagine that they won't be bringing everyone back...In fact I would think the only one to come back would be Harry.. all the rest would be recast...As long as they get the casting right, and move on with a new direction, nothing needs to be retroed, they just continue on, with a new cast, there's plenty of water in this well as long as they stay away from clones. And it may just be me, but Kirsten Dunst has always looked like Billy Corigan(spelling?) the lead singer from smashing pumpkins...not doin' it for me...I've always been dissapointed with her as MJ...and I think that giant lapses of time in a feature, with two characters just staring at each other does not mean it's chemistry..."just friends peter parker?" ughh..But I can't wait to see 3...

the 'greatness' of the spiderman movies

    by soup74

I'm a big comic book fan, and i mildly enjoyed the first two spiderman movies, but i still think they have a way to go. I agree with the comments WAY up on the talk backs about the lack of humor. and is everyone forgetting the horrible 'youse mess with spiderman, youse mess wit all us new yoikers!' line from spiderman 1..ouch was that cringe worthy. then two was an improvement, but the middle of it with emo peter was really unecessary and drawn out. plus the biggest problem i had with the first two (which hopefully it looks like is fixed in the new movie) is that there were no 'bad' guys. just misunderstood people that were driven insane by their inventions.. i mean, what a lame way for doc oct to be defeated. he momentarily 'wakes up' from his insanity and lets himself get beat. venom and new goblin are the same way.. but hopefully sandman with just be a 'bad' bad guy. anyway the point im trying to make is that while i dont think the spiderman movies were horrible, i wouldnt mind seeing someone else take a crack at them. spiderman is a great character.

    by superninja

    by CherryValance

I'd loved to see a Spider-man movie with a completely different cast. I didn't like the idea of Tobey or Krusty from day one and they've sucked as far as I'm concerned. I'd prefer another director as well. Let him make the Hobbit for New Line. And then when it fails miserably we'll get rid of an idiot company and a fresh start for Spider-man. Then PJ can make a definitive version of the Hobbit later on. It'll be great.

Ooo, look, Spider-Man is human...oh, he's like Louie DePalma on Taxi...I love to hate him...ohhh! Hell, Singer makes Superman and turns him into a freakin' stalker. by Bronx Cheer

That guy from Kids in the Hall is trying to crush her head! Yes, he will crush it! Spidey shoots a big glob of spider goo that engulfs the fellow's head-crushing fingers, and then you hear cheers from the ferry passengers, and there's one voice that yells out to Spider-Man, "Yo, dats not how we does it here in New York! Lemme show youse how its done." He picks up Head Crusher and throws him a mile and a half through the air directly at the Statue. Head Crusher's body slams into the torch, the arm breaks off, and the impact and instability bring the entire structure down. That's when Alberto Gonzalez shows up to say, "There were mistakes made here." Spidey is sad and falls into the harbor, and the last we see of him, he is enveloped by the murky depths. An American flag flaps in the wind. The End.

Dunst hasn't provided even a remotely watchable performance since Interview With The Vampire in 1994. As soon as she shows up onscreen in the Spidey movies (which I love, by the way) I feel myself dying a little bit inside as her charm and talent vacuum gnaw away at my soul. Seriously, there isn't a more anemic actress I can think of for Mary Jane. And eating her out if offered has nothing to do with her being a talentless bimbo.

    What a successful HOBBIT needs.

    by Sepulchrave

An intensely likable Bilbo, much warmer than Wood's Frodo. A scaled down production that is nevertheless based on the immense visual achievement of Weta's LOTR, especially if they can get either John Howe or Alan Lee back to do designs with the understanding that this is a smaller, more intimate film. Gandalf narration; a child's story needs a storyteller with a strong voice. A magnificent Smaug with strongly human characteristics; NOT a beast; a crafty, jealous, vain and murderous person who happens to be a dragon. Good DWARF music and an attitude to dwarf culture that goes beyond the comic Gimli towards something far more dignified and secret. Scary but not horrifying goblins, spiders and a proto-Gollum (maybe just half-seen; two eyes and a voice in the darkness).

was badly miscast anyway. Wait a few years, do a new trilogy with a different cast. It'd keep it feeling fresh. Peter would be older, Spidey would have swung round the block a few more times. There are stories left to tell.

    by BilboRing

If Tobey does not want to do a Spidey 4.....just ink Jake Gyllenhall. He'd be perfect too. Then change MJ for sure. That chick with the red hair from That 70s Show would be great. But finding the right director is the problem. Raimi nailed these movies. I am sure SM3 will be as amazing as 1 and 2. But there are so many more Spidey stories to tell. So many. I could see Raimi doing the Hobbit though. And doing it well. But that is a movie that you need original cast members for. Nobody else can play Gandalf or Gollumn. Nobody. Still, Peter Jackson should be doing the Hobbit and that is that. No questions.

    by Barron34

I'm available as a proofreader, if EW is hiring. Also, I don't see a problem giving the Spiderman franchise a bit of a rest and then recasting. I would really love to see Laura Prepon as Mary Jane Watson. She's the spitting image of the bodacious comic book character, and she's got the same upbeat, spicy attitude that the movie version lacks and the comic book version is famous for. Kirsten Dunst would have been better cast as Gwen Stacey, who was the sweet, blond-girl-next-door type. Dunst could have played that character, then they could have done the tragic Death of Gwen Stacey storyline, and Dunst could have left the franchise organically when they killed her character off. I hope they don't kill off the Mary Jane character because Dunst wants to leave, because she is pretty integral to the Peter Parker character. They should keep the character but simply recast if Dunst leaves. I hope they continue to keep the movies as close to the spirit of the comics as they can.

    The Hobbit

    by Barron34

Whoever suggested James Cromwell for Gandalf: genius casting. Look, Raimi is just a very talented guy. I am certain he could make an excellent Hobbit movie. It is just a bit sad that Jackson and his great company of filmmakers will not be revisiting Middle-Earth, at least for the foreseeable future. That said, Raimi might bring a fresh perspective to the Tolkien Mythos on film. Sepulchrave is dead on with his list of what a successful Hobbit movie needs. Jackson and Company did a stupendous job and achieved what many believed impossible: the successful live-action filming of the Lord of the Rings. That is not to say that there weren't things about the films that couldn't have been improved upon. Frodo's heroic inner struggle and his journey were not as well dramatized and externalized as they could have been. Gimli and the Dwarven race were not treated as seriously as they perhaps could have been, and instead were sometimes relegated to comic relief. If the Hobbit is to be done well and proper, the Dwarves need to be treated well and proper, as Sepulchrave points out. And Bilbo Baggins needs to be a warm and accessible hero-protagonist. I think that Raimi could make a very good Hobbit film, given the chance. Maybe Peter Jackson and Company could one day have the opportunity to return to the Tolkien Mythos via a film version of some of the elements of the Silmarillion.

Raimi and Jackson have had identical careers

    by King Sweyn Forkbeard

Both started out in home made horror/comedy, both then moved onto low budget studio stuff that was critically liked if not successful at the Box Office, then both were surprisingly handed the reins to big studio trilogies and knocked them out of the park. <P> IF Jackson is going to be replaced then I can think of few people better suited than Raimi, save perhaps Cuaron or Del Toro. <P> However, best all round result is that New Line fuck it up and the rights revert to someone who will let Jackson build on his original trilogy, and give us a Hobbit for grownups, no a twee kids story. Tolkien himself wanted to go back and rewrite it in a style more suited to LOTR, so I see no problem in Jackson doing it that way either.

And I love both Spidey movies, but I don't think it would bother me one bit if the casting was changed. I think the bigger impact would be changing the director. But that could work too, as long as the approach to the material is the same. I think the spirit of Spidey is there, especially with the second one (yeah, yeah, I know Spidey doesn't joke enough), but it 'feels' like Spidey. My spidey sense is tingling in anticipation of the third movie! Aw crap, spidey webbing all over my keyboard! (it's organic too!)

...what I like best about you? It’s that you, during the weeks or months following a particularly gruesome session of being at the receiving end of a TB assraping, frequent many talkbacks, shooting the shit, buddying up with folks, trying to launch particularly lame AICN cathphrases, typing what you doubtlessly think are humorous posts in loud, shouty, upper-case letters and generally waiting for the shockwaves of the latest flame war to subside. Then you start to feel comfortable. You think “Hey, I got my buds, and they got my back.” Your confidence begins to return and you start entertaining the notion of jabbing one of the adversaries responsible for your earlier humiliation in an appropriate TB. The trouble is – or rather, the fun part is – that you become overly eager and overestimate your capabilities, which results in a TB like this, where your jab blows up in your face like an ACME cigar laced with dogshit, and suddenly you find yourself once again at the receiving end of humiliation and pain. Maybe I’m wrong, who knows? Maybe it’s just your well-documented love of -- and obsession with -- violent anal penetration which drives you to these lengths.

People want to make sense of it even if there's none to be made. And the media choosing to put human names and faces on the numerically ordered dead is hardly something to blast them for.<p>What the politicians and pundits do with something like this is their business, but don't you fucking dare trivialize the loss of these or any lives in an effort to promote your own terminally jaded and skewed view of reality.<p>If a Muslim had walked onto a Jewish Community Center campus and started killing kids and teachers, you can bet you'd use that to make political hay for your own cause (just like the Bush administration used 9-11 to make hay for theirs, which you happened to ensdorse strongly at the time). So don't come crying -- all holier than thou and disgusted and above it all -- just because something like this is very likely to break badly for the conservative agenda from a PR standpoint.<p>The sword you've been weilding -- specifically pontificating about what U.S. policy should be based on the crazy fucking actions of a few -- cuts both ways and, as you rightfully observed, that sword has gotten rather dull over the last few years, especially. But dull blades are often the most dangerous. So if I were you I'd just steer the fuck clear of this topic entirely.

I know there is a bit of history here with you guys, but all I can see, honestly, is that anchorite is stating his perspective just like the rest of you. You just don't like his views, which is fine. <p> Yet for some reason, every time he posts, people go off on diatribes and tell him that he's better off not commenting. I've got to say, people say crazy things on this site all the time, I just don't get it. I imagine it would not be well recieved if it was done to you in return.

    Actually BSB...

    by Mr. Nice Gaius

...your post attacking DocPaz was in rather poor taste. It was totally off the mark and broached a subject in this relatively benign TB that didn't need to be mentioned. (Certainly not in that manner.) It was crass and transparent.<P>Seriously. If that's how you really feel, then why aren't you condemning all the Bay Haters who say that "Transformers" is going to BOMB out of respect for the victims lost in various Iraq bombings every day?<P>Earlier, you implied that I was somehow defending DocPaz. Well, as one can clearly see, he needs no such assistance. I just happen to think you took an utterly ricockulous and miscalculated jab at someone and it needed to be addressed.

Take your pick, BSB. Either way, it's crass and uncalled for. How dare you inject that into the conversation in that manner?<P>Quite trying to be the self-righteous TB hero all the time. It's fucking lame and transparent.<P>But you know all about that don't you, Le POSEUR?

    Sorry, anchorite...

    by DocPazuzu

...but Roland is completely on target when it comes to you. I have no doubt that there's a small part of you that's secretly disappointed that the shooter didn't turn out to be an illegal immigrant. You rode that particular pony right into the ground in the Bob Clark TB. At the very least you'd be using the sob stories of this tragedy to fuel the odious argument that if he'd been stopped at the border this never would have happened. As for your comments about the high death toll being a result of the pussification of America, I don't know where to begin. What you said is tantamount to blaming the victims themselves for getting shot since they all didn't rush him at once, like you and all true red-blooded conservatives would have -- or so you imply. Suffice it to say, in a long list of assholish comments you've made over the years, that ranks as one of the most offensive. Congratulations on fucking yourself over once again just by opening your mouth.

  • April 18, 2007, 7:17 a.m. CST

    I never believed that argument

    by Lost Prophet

that the media inspire people to kill, especially not when related to serious journalism. (Or even human interest)- I certainly think that the fact that several of these instances happened in the years since columbine has fuck all to do with the media, and more to do with the lack of gun control in America. (Before anyone jumps on me about this, I don't think that control would mean this would never happen, I just mean that it would make it far harder for the intended killer to get his mits on a gun, and therefore less likely to happen)<p>I do however, despise the mass hand wringing and gnashing of teeth that invariably happens after a tragedy. A case to note was the princess diana death- the whole public mourning shit made me vomit- I didn't particularly care, and was not alone in this. I certainly developed compassion fatigue very quickly. <p>This was a bit of a ham disted attempt to sit on the middle ground, sorry all. <p>Cheers for the MJ clarification BTW.

Getting back to the actual talkback

    by TimBenzedrine

They could easily sidestep the whole MJ problem for Spidey4 by sticking the character on a plane and sending her to London for some acting gig. They wouldn't even hve to show her leave. While she's gone,Spider Man can get involved with the Black Cat. Spider Man5 comes along, MJ's back, either an attitude adjusted Dunst, or a brand new actress in the role. Works for me.

  • April 18, 2007, 9:42 a.m. CST

I comprehended your intent just fine, anchorite.

    by Childe Roland

You showed a lot of balls (and characteristically few brains) when you made the initial post that I rightfully blasted you for (seriously, you criticized the news for pointing out that one of the victims was a Holocaust survivor, what the fuck kind of Jew are you?!?!?). You should show the same testicular fortitude in owning up to your ass-headed statements and the (lack of) reason behind them instead of trying to backpedal into some safely neutral territory.<p>As for telling you to steer clear of the topic, I did no such thing. I offered you advice based on what I, as a sensitive and intelligent person, would do in your tenuous and downright indefensible position. You were right to thank me for that (even if you were trying to be smug about it). You should've stopped there. Then maybe Doc P. wouldn't have had to pull down your pants again in front of all these people.<p>I'll stop condescending you when you stop being such a willfully ignorant, hypocritical asshole. Until then, I'm going to call you on it every time I see it. Cheers.

    moving on

    by SpikeTBB

I'd like to see the older, more mature and confident Spider Man and Peter Parker. I never disliked Tobey, and he had some good scenes but I never thought he did much with it. He got sort of one note very quickly, and seemed so sedated.<p> Dunst had the same effect. I never really got the sense I was seeing Peter and MJ, just Tobey and Dunst I hadn't given it much thought but when I watch the DVD's of the movies I know often fast forward through the scenes with just those two.<p> Spider-Man tends to have an air of informal authority about him in the comics. Yes, he makes wisecracks, and I am not sure he always does it because he is scared. I honestly think he sees the absurdity of a lot of the situations and makes jokes. But when things get intense he can and does get serious. NOT depressed or scared or soul searching but serious and takes on the demeanor of a seasoned professional, which is what he is. In a recent Ultimate Spider-Man, Doc Ock made the comment that when Spider-Mans tops joking , that is how Ock knows he is scared. Spider-Girl answered "No that how you know he is serious" and the both knock Ock on his ass. And that version IS a kid but still acts more adult than the movie version.<p> I'm ready tosee that version in the movies. he jokes cause he is confident in himself, not because he is insecure. He knows what he is doing and knows he is fighting the good fight. THAT"S Spider-Man

  • April 19, 2007, 8:49 a.m. CST

    Anchorite, you ignorant slut...

    by Childe Roland

...I've never had to make up a single thing about you in order to reveal you for the ignorant and blustering asshat you are.<p>I don't like you because I see in your posts, on very rare occasions, the capacity for reason and even a glimmer of sensitivity (usually when you're discussing the plight of Israel) which you choose to put in a bag and light on fire most of the time you post. In other words, you should fucking well know better.<p>The media is definitely a mad dog off the chain 95% of the time, but when it reveals details about the lives of the victims in an undeniable tragey, that is not a symptom of the problem. And that's exactly what you were harping on.<p>I provided examples of your hypocrisy already (as if anyone needed them (it's okay to scream about man's inhumanity to man when it justifies an invasion of a foreign nation, but not when it might lead to a re-evaluation of our nation's gun laws? And apparently it's okay to wallow in the tragic deaths of airplane passengers, World Trade Center tenants and New York Police and Firemen, but not in the senseless slaughter of more than 30 kids?). Get a grip.<p> As for the quote of mine you threw in my face in a desperate attempt to be right about something (anything), read it again. Particularly the words: "If I were you." Those are pretty important to the meaning of the statement, because it puts the entire thing in the context of my advice to you as someone who seems to be able to differentiate between topics he should and shouldn't be commenting on. Take it for what you will.<p>And if you think my having fun with a new asshat is somehow symptomatic of my having an off week, you need to learn when it's okay to lighten up and be silly. Insulting someone in Haiku for claiming he's smarter than a bunch of folks on the board is an indulgence, sure, but hardly constitutes sinking anywhere. Trying to divert attention from your own idiocy by implying that some degree of levity on my part undermines my very valid criticisms of you as a human being is just, well, desperate. Do better. Or don't try at all.

Nikki Cox is MARY JANE!by Pie_Man_Returns

    by SpikeTBB

Oh HELL yes, man. I can't imagine why that never occurred to me before you said it. Nikki can be both bright and party girl fun and yet can play the hidden depth the character needs. I've always thought she deserved better roles than she has gotten. Yes, I do think she is sexy as hell on top of that, but looking great does not mean one can act. I think she can do both and her characterization of MJ would be close to the comic book version.<p> Of course they would have to move out of the teen angst or even collage age years for Peter and MJ to cast her, but I am all for that as well.
