EMPIRE, RAIDERS, And JEDI's Kasdan Tackles Another Kind Of Mythology!! He's On The CLASH OF THE TITANS Remake Now!!

Published at:  Apr 16, 2007 6:07:20 PM CDT

Merrick here…

Hollywood Reporter tells us that Lawrence Kasdan has been wrangled to script a remake of 1981’s CLASH OF THE TITANS. Travis Beacham had previously made a run at scripting the same project. With Kasdan on-board, hero Perseus will now be middle aged, angst ridden, and running about half naked swinging around his…sword. I’m kidding (I think). Don't get mad at me for making a lewd sword joke. Hollywood Reporter refers to "Kasdan's mighty pen".

I’ve generally found Kasdan’s work inconsistent in execution, but almost always interesting. His approaching this material makes a whole lotta sense to me, especially because he stands a good chance of creating characters who are accessible – a defecit which often flaws films of this nature. A sweeping adventure with a lot of (genuine) heart and emotion is just what we need right about now.

Here's some stuff from the original film, a really nice transfer of which has been making the rounds on the HD channels. Always loved that trailer...

Not that I really think Clash of the Titans needs a remake, but I'd be interested to see what Lawrence Kasdan does with it. I've always liked his writing.

    by mullah omar

I love the original film, but it's not flawless, and I think it could be improved upon in many respects. I'd even be up for a trilogy, either fleshing out "Clash" as a truly epic story, or as the first part in a trio of mythological stories. I'm looking forward to reading more about this project.

I think altering with the Harryhausen canon is always fraught with peril, but I like the idea of remaking this. So much good material to work with, and who doesn't love a good creature movie. Kraken, Medusa, Zeus, Hera, Poseidon..., all good. Hopefully, they don't go all hard R / 300 on this, either. I loved the 81 version as a kid. The mythology stories are fascinating stuff, and hopefully the CGI sweetens the pot, rather than distracts from it. Can't wait, such a huge fan.

When Kasdan is on, he is fricking on. Grand Canyon is a really excellent character study, and if he can find a common ground between that and ROTJ, I sense something truly awesome is about to come up.

This is retarded. Sure it sounds good now. So did "Hey, let's remake King Kong since now we can do it with CG!" And Kong ended up having a few good things thanks to Jackson. I'm sure Clash will have a few good things thanks to Kasdan. But this remake is going to be as inferior and unnecessary as ALL he others. Is it so hard to give the green light to original material?!? I feel sorry for kids growing up in this dark age of cinema.

Because the name "Clash of the Titans" represents an established old film that a suit can wrap his little mind around. Also because the target 13-25 age range is not familiar with the exploits of Deucalion, Theseus, and Bellerophon because they never, ever read. Most of the common unwashed get their Greek "history" lessons from such dignified sources as 300 and GOD OF WAR.

    by grammaton cleric binks

I was eleven when the original came out, and for me it was one of the best movie experiences of the year. I had always loved mythology, and this story was one of my favorites. This was one of the last great stop motion animation movies before it was killed off by CGI, not that that is necessarily a bad thing. Medusa as a serpent centaur scared the hell out of me. Bubo the mechanical owl however was the Jar Jar Binks of his time. I was too young to appreciate who Maggie Smith and Lawrence Olivier (sp?)were. I'd loved to see a remaked as long as the story takes priority over effects. They should do three versions, and release them simultaneously. A Perseus and the gorgon story, Theseus and the Minotaur, and Belaraphon (sp?) and the Chimera. Too bad ole Mick won't be around to train any of the heroes.

I love me some Clash of the Titans (my most vivid moviegoing memory as a kid was going to see it with Cheech & Chong's Nice Dreams at the drive-in). I even got to tell Ray Harryhausen how much the movie has impacted my life, and upon his hearing of my watching it at the drive-in, he responded "You should see it in a GOOD theater!" Hell yes - where's the re-release?! I don't mind a remake as long as they don't totally screw it up...

I love Harryhausen just as much as every other film geek out there, but jeez...the 1981 film BLEW! Zero atmosphere, banal acting, slow pace...you name it. And hopefully a well researched scenario based on the classic Greek myths and Legends that inspired Harryhausen's potboiler. As for the handling of the sfx, I just hope there's plenty of riffing on Harryhausen's established sequences (notabley Medusa's lair). Looking for ward to this, has great potential if handled the right way.

    by jonah echo

This is sort of off-topic but the news of a COTT remake(more of a non-idea, even if the final product ends up being great, and it very well could)reminded of a movie mentioned on here a year ago, and which has basically vanished from the public eye altogether. It was called THE SASQUATCH DUMPLING GANG and I managed to catch it at the Maryland Film Festival last year and found it to be quite funny and entertaining, although owing a bit too much to Napoleon Dynamite. In that film, the main characters seemed to live in a world melded together of 1982 and 2006. Their fave film was COTT, and used the "WWPD?" as a tagline for life. It was a cute and amusing film, and Im wondering what happened to it. It was slated back then for release in the fall. As for the remakes, how long until a "The Seven Faces of Dr. Lao" remake with Eddie Murphy?

I loved me some titan clashing when I was a kid, but the tone of that film certainly wouldn't hold up today. I also wish they did more stuff closer to the actual stories. Titans was a mish-mash of various heroes and stories for popcorn effect. Of course, if I had my way we'd be seeing the much more interesting, colorful and surreal Celtic stories on the screen. Maybe something from the Mabinogian, or hell, even adapt one of Morgan Llewellyn's mythical/historical fiction novels, like Lion of Ireland, Red Branch, Bard, or Finn MacCool.

There is no goddamn need to remake this film. It's a classic! And as far as CGI, FUCK CGI! Call me old, call me a fool but nothing and mean nothing beats the old stop motion stuff. I love it. It really made it look fantasy and cool in those Sinbad films and of course Clash of The Titans. This is a total disgrace to a piece of classic cinema that does not need to be remade.

What they should is a special edition DVD already and do a re-release in select movie houses. But I guess they will wait until this garbage remake is made and then put out the Special Edition DVD.

Man I hated the movie when it came out. The only time I applauded when the stupid mechanical owl got hit--only for him to appear in the next scene with a crutch under his wing! It was a pathetic mixture of bad acting and bad writing--pretty boy Harry Hambone and the Penguin, come on. Caliban from Shakespeare's Tempest, the Kraken from Norse myth? Sir Laurence Olivier phoned this one in after he saw how much money Sir Alec Guinness was making on Star Wars. The Harryhausen effects were fine, and as someone else pointed out, not as good as his other stuff. Someone else is right also when they said this is just some suits attempt to cash in on 300 with a recognizable name. They are not going to get my money to see this.

Harry Hamlin played a washed-up megastar/rapist/murderer. Whenever they show a clip of one of his old movies it's almost always "Clash of the Titans", which is pretty much the perfect use for it. I, too, saw it at the drive in as a little kid, and loved it (had the lunchbox) but it is a pretty awful flick. At this point, it's pretty worthless to complain about the remake fever going on, as nothing will change it anytime soon.

implying that this will be a disasater because it may utilize CGI instead of stop-motion is a bit silly.
I don't see any reason for it beyond the cool nostalgia factor and that it was simply the available tool to do that sort of thing at the time. I'm not a huge CGI advocate by any measure, but personally, either way would be fine by me. Good stop motion or good CGI, just ultimately tell an engagaing story, that's what matters.

my author friend, Mr. Teachout shows the Medusa scene to his students every year--they make fun of the two-headed wolf part, saying the effects are stupid and old. But when the music hits and Medusa comes out--that classroom is silent--they're scared to death! it's awesome to see! go harryhausen!

This is a good idea, the film needs a remake.

    by brokentusk

The success of 300 (a film with both historical and fantastic elements) obviously pushed Warner Bros. to get this into production. The original CLASH OF THE TITANS is in need of a remake - I mean, I for one have been waiting to see a Greek mythological film done on a large scale using modern day effects. TROY would have been 99% better if they had included mythological elements in the story (and if they had excluded 88% of the film - Sean Bean's Odysseus counts as 11%). I say this film should get made and then they should adapt THE ODYSSEY. Bring it!

Clash remake makes sense (in a Hollywood way)

    by billypilgrim

It's a fun movie that I first saw when I was 11. But get real. Its not full blown classic like 'On The Waterfront'. Its not an untouchable movie. With the CGI work seen on recent movies, 300 the current popular example, this could be a wonderful piece of work. For now I will look forward to the effort.

    by mechatruffautmk2

...they miss you. I can't believe you guys think this is a good idea. The original is fucking aces and the effects still hold up today unless you're an asshole. A new Greek mythology film with tastefully done CGI would be great, but why remake Clash? Just for the name? Isn't there plenty of other mythic material out there? Why not a chunk of Ovid's Metamorphoses? Maybe the classical House of Atreus trilogy? SHIA LE BOOF AS ORESTES! There's no point in remaking this and I hope it never gets off the ground. Kasdan is nothing to throw an orgy over, anyway; if the directors he worked for have proven their since proven their inability to sucessfully work any longer in the sci-fi/fantasy genre, what makes you think Kasdan still has the same chops he showed in Raiders and Empire?

...but didn't. Can somebody just write a new story in the same mold?...an original idea in the same mythological genre?? Because slapping the BRAND NAME on a new film helps everything from marketing, demo, box office to dvd sales. That's fine. My childhood is not being raped...it's just such a different era now where we follow films from their inception to completion... contract negotiations, budgets etc. Oh how I fondly remember the days of walking into a dark theatre not knowing much of anything about Tron, Clash Of The Titans, Alien etc. It was like those movies just dropped out of the sky. Now we can log on and see what Peter Jackson had for breakfast before today's shoot, or LOOK!...see that non descript concrete warehouse over there?...that's where they'll be filming scenes for The Transformers...Whoa!!I'll send you the link!! So be it. It's just that Clash doesn't need to be remade...they got it right the first time.

    by datachasm

there are a 1,000,000 possible stories that could be done with the Greek Mythos... so why retread this one? why not try something new? why not remake, if you are creatively bankrupt, Sinbad? i would much rather walk out of a theatre, having seen a original work, and thinking that this movie is better than Clash of the Titans, and how lucky the youth are to have this one, than walking out saying this part was better than the original, and that part was better than the remake. so EfNY, now Clash, whats next up on the low rent producer's hit list?

For fuck's sake, we're YEARS behind on a new Sinbad movie (not counting the underrated but still flawed animated Dreamworks effort). And by all means, somebody who played Dr. Who must be cast in a role so he can steal all his scenes. Harryhausen won't be with us forever, give him work!!!! And Argonauts is way behind. The original didn't even tell the whole story, and jeez even a crappy Hallmark Mini Series was able to be more fun that most movies by retelling it--MAKE THESE MOVIES!!!!

I do think that they should make the Kraken more monstrous; the Creature from the Aegean Lagoon was pretty lame.

I agree with those that have pointed out that Kasdan may, or may not be up to his old game. I'm not basing that on anything I know about him now, it's just reality. Every dog has his day, and after an impressive string of screen writing hits(ESB,ROTJ,Raiders, etc), he might hit rock bottom. On the other hand, I think he can do it justice, if it needs to be redone anyway. And, I totally agree that Lucas should have given him a call. Tylermo

    Novelizations and False Memory Syndrome

    by the_deathticle

Did anyone else used to read the novelizations of movies even before seeing them in the theater? When I was a kid I did that with "Clash" and "The Last Starfighter." I love me some "Clash of the Titans" to this day, and picked it up on DVD when it was released. Strangely, I had remembered a specific shot from the Medusa scene that wasn't in the movie. I have a very clear memory of Medusa taking out one of her arrows and drawing the sharp edge of the arrowhead across the top of her forearm in order to coat it with her poisonous blood. However, that shot is not in the movie. I can't imagine that it was edited out, so I have to believe that it must have been in the novelization and I'm simply remembering visuals that my childhood imagination cooked up when reading the book. The movie DOES show the arrows smoking as they whiz through the air. The crazy thing is that I can see it so clearly. The dark blood oozing out of the slice on her arm. The sizzle and smoke as it coats the arrowhead. Does anyone else have any memory of anything like this, either from the book or the movie?
