SPIDER-MAN 3 Reviews Start Swinging Into AICN!

Hey, everyone. ”Moriarty” here. It shouldn’t be a surprise that we’re starting to get reports on the film. It’s premiering in Tokyo tomorrow, then in London, Italy, Germany, Spain, Russia, Sweden, and France... all before it ever shows up in the US. I’ve heard the same behind-the-scenes progression of buzz on this one that I did on SPIDER-MAN 2. Lots of chaos up front, rumbles that it wasn’t as good as the film before it, and then a total reversal of that once the film was finished. So now we’ve got our first review of the movie from first-time spy "Norman's Boy", and what’s the word? Check it out and see for yourself, and brace for some spoilers. If you’ve watched all the ads, none of this should shock you, but still... tread lightly if you want to go in knowing absolutely nothing:

Hi Harry, big fan of AICN, so you’re the only one I’m going to share this with. If you want to post it you can, but I have to stress with you that I CAN NOT under any circumstances tell you how I saw this movie but let me tell you, it was almost as bad as going through airport security, I will say one thing. I was able to catch the movie in Japan, where it is currently being prepped for its premier on the 16th, cant say anymore and if that hurts my credibility then it is unfortunately a risk I have to take. Just read what I have to say, and when the movie rolls around, you will see that I was indeed telling you the truth, and that I wrote the first review of a little film a lot of people are excited about called SPIDER-MAN 3. So I can’t say that I have ever really written a full review before, so I’m going to try and just type whatever comes into my head. By the way, I’m an avid Spider-man fan and the 2nd film is among my favorites, so keep that in mind while reading. A BRIEF RUNDOWN: Main titles begin, same flipping marvel logo, same brilliant Elfman theme (this time composed by Chris Young, but more on that later). No Alex Ross paintings, but there is some great CGI which focuses a lot on black webs, which is a hint at things to come, the composition of the titles is similar to that of the first movie, as opposed to the second. So at this point the film has just begun and already I feel like I’m visiting an old and treasured friend for the first time in 3 years. I can’t really describe how ecstatic I was at this point. The first shot of the movie is footage from spider-man’s final swing in Spider-Man 2, at least I’m pretty sure it was, we here a voice over from Peter, more of the same, but this time he notes how things are finally going his way, and the camera zooms out and we see Peter and a group of kids watching the clip of Spidey swinging on a big screen suspended over the streets of New York. The first 20 minutes is basically that, just the viewer watching Peter, and its so odd to see things going right for him, it’s a good feeling, but thankfully it doesn’t last. We are introduced to Sandman early on, and ironically he’s the biggest surprise in the movie, he is being played off as the typical thug who kills in the movies promotion but he is very similar to Doc Ock actually, he’s a family man who I believe is a good man at heart, and he has a great scene with Cliff Robertson, his character teaches Peter that the past is the past, and if he really is going to be a hero, he has to be able to forgive someone who has done a wrong, and that revenge will do nothing but make things more painful. We are also introduced to Harry’s sub plot as well and let me tell you; it’s great, and also focuses on revenge, this time on Peter (the movies main theme is revenge if you havent guessed). Wilem Dafoe returns for more hallucinogenic fun and Harry’s scenes were among my favourite in the new movie. I really don’t want to go into the actual plot because I don’t want to spoil anyone, but the second act is basically Peter’s fall and the third act is the redemption of both Peter and Harry. 2 major characters die at the end of this one, one good and slightly expected, and one that I didn’t expect to bite it at all, so it was an actual shock to see it happen, I think it might piss off some fans but now that I think about it, I dont know how it could have ended differently. It’s a long film, it’s 2 and a half hours give or take, so there’s no doubt that this film is very much more epic than the first 2. There are 7 major action scenes however they are all additions to the core plot, and like the second film they are all bonus as opposed to the main event: 1. Harry vs. Peter 2. Peter vs. giant crane (you will get it when you see the movie) 3. Peter vs Sandman 4. Peter vs Sandman in the subway. 5. Peter vs Harry rematch 6. Birth of venom (debatable as an action scene, more just kick ass) 7. A 4 way battle on a construction site which guarantees this film a special effects Oscar. So what did I think? Here are some views on the different aspects of the film. Symbiote: This was great because it arrives right in time to finish Peters ascent into arrogance, it’s very symbolic to show what Peter is turning into and it is an addition to the character as opposed to a 2 dimensional plot device, which is great because I had some fears that the whole black suit would be a tacked on subplot like the cure was in X-Men 3, and it’s not. This is a good time to point out that a lot of people have been saying that this film is overstuffed, but it really isn’t. It never loses its focus and deals with one plot thread at a time, and the long running time gives everything breathing room, and at the end when all the plot threads tie up, it’s a great feeling. Brock: Topher Grace portrays the Brock from the ultimate universe in terms of personality, but his background is more along the lines of 616, so I guess it’s the best of both worlds, but Grace plays him wonderfully, and he is a great addition. Gwen: Now this is perfect casting, every time Gwen is on screen its bliss (which isnt all that much unfortunately). Such an amazing character being handled with such grace. She has both purpose in Peter’s life and Spider-man’s life, so she is not tacked on in any way, however I must say she is underused, which is my only real complaint with the film. The unspoken hostility between her and M.J is so subtle but both actresses really pull it off well..which brings me too.. Mary Jane: This isn’t the M.J of the first film, and by the end of this film she’s lost a bit of her sweet touch that made her so lovable in the 2nd film, and it is Peter’s fault, but the last scene really ties up the Peter and M.J thread very nicely, and we know they will be happy. For the first half of the film, Dunst plays M.J the same way she did in 2, and it’s a beautiful performance. She goes through more shit in this one, her play gets a bad review and she is pretty much restricted to singing in a Jazz club, and Peter doesnt make things much better, and uses Gwen in a pretty assholish way against her. M.J does get captured in the end but it adds to the tension of the final battle so it's all good. Peter: We saw him make the choice to honor that with great power comes great responsibility in the first film, and in the second film he learned that he didn’t have to face it alone, and the third film is very much about Peter learning to keep a balance of both worlds, and he realizes by the end that it is not enough to simply swing in tights each night and save someone, its about keeping those that he loves happy, as well as being a role model to a city that really does need him, it is a hard lesson but Peter learns it in the end, and Tobey plays him even better than in 2. Venom: I’ll leave him a surprise but don’t worry, I don’t think anyone will be disappointed with this bit, big thanks to Raimi for including him, if there is a 4 its hard to say if venom will be the villain, he’s pretty much “dealt with”. I already gave my thoughts on sandman so that leaves Harry: His is the best plot line in the movie his arc is Shakespearian in nature and by the end of this film he really proves that he is not his father, and in the end he puts everything on the line to save his friends, you will love how it turns out, very emotional. The score of the film by Chris Young is more of the same; he basically rehashes Elfman’s themes, and makes new themes for new characters. His new themes are good, and Sandman’s in particular is quite catchy and similar to Ocks, but they probably are not as good as if Elfman had done them, but the score doesn’t disappoint if you liked it the first 2 times around. Raimi has proven himself a spider god thrice over now, and really I want this film to be the last one. It ends every major plot line and doesn’t leave much open, albeit it doesn’t really zip things shut either, but really this is a great ending. This is the most emotional, and epic entry in the series, and like its predecessors, it never loses sight that action is a bonus to the character drama, and not the main attraction, it really is amazing. I loved this film and I think critics will too, and it will probably be the fan favorite as well, don’t worry guys; Raimi hasn’t let us down yet. My scores for all three movies: Spider-Man: 8/10 Spider-Man 2: 9/10 Spider-Man 3: 9.5/10 That’s right folks 3 is my favorite, the trilogy curse is broken at last and we finally have a complete vision of a comic book character, which was yet to be done until now. My hat is off to the whole crew for giving us this gift of a trilogy.

We were also sent a link from a Chinese website where they have their own first review up now, and they translated it for us so you can see what they ahd to say about it as well:

Hi there! This is Adam from, one film fan news site in China. We love AICN a lot! And now, here's a world exclusive review for "Spider-man 3" from an inside man. You know, according to the film importing policy in China, all the foreign films must be sent in to local distributing partners and the State Administration of Films for censorship a few weeks before releasing in China. Especially thanks to this honest guy working for local distributor of Sony Pictures, we got a chance to take a glimpse at one of the biggest blockbuster in this summer, even earlier than world premiere in Tokyo on April 16. Keen and I've translated main ideas of the review into English in order to share something in that you guys may be interested. Anyway, if you don't like spoilers, please do ignore it. "Spider-man 3" is no doubt another visual feast, even more brilliant than the second film. You know, more characters and scenes, more challenges. They make Sandman really incredible, which must be one of the most difficult parts in my thought. Hit as a man, flow as sand. The final two-vs.-two fight is absolutely huge. (We'll talk about it later.) You'll find it almost impossible to catch up with all the fantastic scenes. I've no ideas whether you care about Gwen Stacy. However, she didn't seem to be a very important role in the film, even a little unnecessary. I think most of us won't go to "Spider-man 3"for love stories. Forget it. Remember J. Jonah Jameson? We don't like him very much as he seeks nothing but profits and carries a personal vendetta against Spider-Man. You'll LOVE him this time 'cause he is the guy making you laugh…with his severe wife. Here's five major action scenes: 1, Spider-man vs. New Goblin Yea, we have seen most of it in the 7-minute preview clips. But here's what happens next: Harry Osborn fell in a faint, and suffered from a short-term memory loss (temporarily forgot what happened between Peter Parker and his father). He and Peter became friends again. 2, Spider-man vs. Sandman Sandman escaped from prison for saving his daughter from serious illness. The police chased and forced him into a laboratory where he turned into Sandman later. And he encountered Spider-man when trying to rob a cash truck. They fought for the first time in the truck. Sandman fled at last. 3, Black Spider-man vs. Sandman The symbiote from outer space crashed down to earth with a meteoroid. It attached itself to Peter Parker as we saw in the trailers. The new black Spider-man was much more powerful than ever before. And he fought against Sandman in an underground tunnel as taking revenge for his uncle. Definitely, Spider-man was the winner, but Sandman was flushed away and survived fortunately. 4, Black Spider-man vs. New Goblin The shadow of Harry's father still lingered on and reminded him to revenge, which restored his memory. He made mischief between Peter and his girl, and Peter was badly hurt. But it was not that easy to defeat Black Spider-man. New Goblin failed again, and half of his face got disfigured. 5, Spider-man + New Goblin vs. Venom + Sandman Yea, that's the final fight. We know, Venom a.k.a. Eddie Brock was a journalist. He once made fake news and got exposed by Spider-man. Losing his job and his girl who fell in loved with Spider-man; he blamed Spider-Man for ruining his life. He went to a church to pray that God could help him with getting rid of Spider-man. At the same time, Peter was trying to tear his black costume at the top of the church bell-tower. Intense sonic was lethal to the symbiote that Peter got the creature separated from himself when the bell rang. Unfortunately, it got a new host soon - Eddie Brock. The merger became Venom. Venom and Sandman then united. They kidnapped Spider-man's girlfriend, and beat Spider-man with absolute superiority. As Spider-man was dying, Harry got stung by conscience and turned to stand by Spider-man. Then the battle became two-vs.-two. At last, Spider-man [SPOILERS DELETED BY AICN -- I MEAN, COME ON, I AM PLANNING TO SEE IT IN A FEW WEEKS!]. It's a happy ending, sorts of. "Spider-man 3" must be the best visual action blockbuster ever and outdo all its predecessors. It is really rare to see a better sequel these days, right? "Spider-man 3" is going to hit big screens in China on May 2th. That's all. Thanks a lot! Hope you like our news tips, guys! Pleaaaaaaase keep in touch!

we've had to a consistently good super hero trilogy, i still think they shouldve taken 3 yrs with Spidey 2 tho, drags in the middle for me, no gonna go see this first midnight showing, this is the spidey movie ive been waiting on, one with Spiderman all the way thru it. 'Spiderman no more', that plot line was a cop out in 2 as they could only do so many cgi scenes in advance, no more spiderman no more, spidey all the way!Thru!

Transformers will take the fx Oscar...

    by moto

... because thus far the footage has looked damn near photorealistic, where Spider-Man 3 looks exactly like the first two, basically lots of CG and then some more CG, and then some more. Trust me, ILM will take home the golden boy for Transformers, whether you like the new character designs or not.

Eh, I sense some X3 here...

    by The Mothman

It'll probably be a decent enough movie, but also definitive proof that the perfect comic book adaptations some people have been holding out for will never happen. I've had a few issues with the Spideys so far, namely -casting from the very beginning, over-reliance on CG (can someone smarter than I tell me whether it would have been possible to incorporate more practical effects without killing stuntmen?), pushing the 'with great power' angle too far, the entire second movie going over the same ground as the first...but let's face it, until a talkbacker who's willing to take advice direct from the fans gets to helm one of these suckers, we'll have to take the good with the bad.

I think the Spidey flicks don't play well on repeat

    by Bronx Cheer

views is that they are relatively character-driven, and while the action sequences have all been pretty well done, they are so plugged into the emotional core of the films that these don't play like typical blockbuster roller-coaster-ride type films. Or, and I hadn't considered this before, maybe it's because they aren't great films. Up until now, I have really liked the films, but I love seeing Spidey realized on screen so much that perhaps the kid in me has clouded my critical judgment. As much as I love the films, I still have only seen each one twice, and as someone who's seen Citizen Kane about 15 times, Lawrence of Arabia about ten, and many other faves multiple times, it's not as if I have a problem with watching flicks many times over. What gives?

  • April 15, 2007, 10:09 p.m. CST

So, Sandman really kills Uncle Ben in this movie?

    by MonteCristo

I mean, that would be the worst decision Raimi could make. Especially since after the novelization said that "Peter felt no longer responsible for his uncle's death". I thought that was something thrown in the novel to piss off the fans. I thought, that in the "reality" of the film, Sandman's relationship with Peter would parallel Peter's relationship with Peter. Nothing's set in stone, but I fear Raimi might mess up an otherwise good movie with an unnecessary plot point. I hope my fears are unfounded, but I don't want another "Last Stand"...I really don't.

They do use stuntmen where they can and i think the CGI is pretty much as good as could be done in the time given. I remember when people used to put up with special effects which were not perfect and suspend their disbelief. I never thought the original King Kong looked that real but it was still great.

venom is pretty much "DEALT WITH" WTF IS THIS BULLSHIT?!?!?! NO ONE PRETTY MUCH DEALS WITH VENOM! HE IS SPIDEY'S GREATEST MOTHER FUCKING ADVERSARY! THIS IS BULLSHIT! I fucking hate how these stupid fucking directors decide its a good idea to kill off the villains at the end of superhero movies. First Burton fucks with us by killing off the joker in the first movie, raimi fucking kills off Doc Oc (arguably spidey's greatest adversary but personally i believe he's second to venom), and now HES GOING TO FUCKING DEAL OUT VENOM?!?!??! ALSO FUCK YOU AICN... when have you ever deleted a section of a spoiler review? Dont you usually just fuckin put it so you have to highlight it or ad it as extreme spoiler alert? That was complete garbage and unfair for you to do that

And, the Green Goblin is "SPIDEY'S GREATEST MOTHER FUCKING ADVERSARY" thank you very much. What I don't like is that everybody's talking about Venom like's the main character and criticizing every change of the character when they're NOT EVEN FUCKING ACKNOWLEDING A BASTARDIZATION OF THE REAL MAIN CHARACTER SPIDER-MAN AND HIS ORIGIN!!! Venom can go to HELL!

Bronx Cheer are you trying to say

    by pjdon

that it is a bad thing that the action scenes are plugged into the emotional aspects of the film?<p>Surely that's what we want!<p>There is noting better than an action scene you have an emotional envolvement in, that is where all the tension comes from, caring what happens to the characters.<p>I think the Peter V Goblin fight we saw in the sneak peak showed this. Having Peter fight Harry but not really want to hurt him at the same time as loosing the wedding ring May gave him while probably worrying about being late to meet MJ worked very well. Layering levels of conflict ontop of each other is the best way to envoke tension.

I completely agree with you... Killing supervillians is complete shit... Nolan got it right with Batman Begins: scarecrow lives. They can kill Ras as much as they want cuz he is immortal, so no complaints there. Killing venom, wtf mate. Someone needs to tell these directors that they don't have to kill off their villians

pjdon, I think it's ideal. It's so rare in big films.

    by Bronx Cheer

<p>I never considered why I don't have any drive to see the first two films again. Maybe it's because they're a little depressing? Maybe I relate too much with Peter Parker? When I was a kid,I was bitten by a brown recluse spider, and my dad gave me a Spider-Man book to read to cheer me up when I was recovering--it was actually quite touchy. I developed some serious problems that put me in ICU for a day. After that, I was hooked. But I never read many of the comic books, just really dug the character. And my dad died too young, so maybe there's too much of him intertwined with the Spidey mythos. Who knows?</p> <p>I did learn one thing from that spider encounter. Spiders are not posionous per se. They are venomous. Actually, I learned two other things. Don't let recluse spiders bite you. And if you get bit by a spider, have it checked in case you've encountered a spider that's very venomy.</p>

    by MST3KPIMP

Is there anyone here who still thinks Spidey is superior to 1? Sure when you first see it it seems like a high octane expanded upgrade but after repeat veiwings you realize just how hollow the film is. I fear this simply a continuation of this trend. Spider-man sequels seem to be very pretty wrapping paper but when you open the box theres nothing there.

    Bronx Cheer you are right

    by pjdon

in saying that they are not as re-watchable as some action films. And it probably is because instead of just watching the action you are emotionally involved so it's not as easy to watch. Never really thought about it that way. It's wierd I actually re-watch the comic book films i like least most, like Fantastic 4 or SR, prob because I can just turn my brain off and watch the pretty visuals.<p>As for brown recluse spiders...I live in England and we don't have anything venomous here. But a few years back I was travelling aroung the US and was staying with some mad people I met in Pahrump Navada and there was brown recluses about. People go on about black widows but they are pussies in comparison. Don't recluses make your flesh rot away or something?

  • April 15, 2007, 11:33 p.m. CST

I was lucky that the bite didn't go necrotic.

    by Bronx Cheer

<p>I learned after the experience that some people even get gangrene from the bastards. I was lucky. I've known people to get black widow bites, and they can be a problem, but when you look into what spiders will kick your ass, the recluses are up there.</p> <p>I was hiding from my mom because I threw a rock at a car driving too fast through our neighborhood, and the driver got out to chase me down. I climbed into a box in our garage, and it turns out I was not alone in the box. I felt the bastard crawling on me in the dark, could tell it was something big, and when I jumped out of the box, I guess he'd already bitten me. Suffice it to say that I gave away my hiding spot.</p> <p>That was a rough day. My dad kicked my ass, and later that night I got all spiderbite-funky and was taken off to the hospital.</p> <p>I'll shut up now. (I'm sure I should do that more often...shut up, that is.</p>

It's Harry and Venom. The first review says we know Peter and MJ end up happy. Actually, it's a shame they whacked Harry, I think Franco would've made a really good Peter, actually. Peter was actually quite attractive after he matured.

    We NEED spoilers?

    by BizarroJerry

Why are people acting like we deserve plot spoilers? Personally, I think spoilers, even with warnings, shouldn't be out there. Too much potential for ruining a film for someone accidentally. It'd be nice if AICN showed some kind of hint of professionalism once in a while. I mean, why should I expect spoilers when I click on a link to a movie "review"?

  • April 16, 2007, 1:49 a.m. CST

    Problem with grindhouse...

    by BizarroJerry

Quentin and his buddy made a film basically based on a genre of cult films. By definition, they're not for everybody. Don't care how much of an ad blitz. I think you kind of have to be in on the joke, or know the type of movie the flick's an homage, too. I think most people saw the ads and said "What the hell is that ridiculous movie?"

Great point regarding Grindhouse and its lack of appeal to the masses. Great point. I think I may have subconsciously knew that all along. DO NOT DENY THE STAYING POWER OF VENOM!

  • April 16, 2007, 2:44 a.m. CST

    This movie cost 300$ million

    by Turnquest

And none of those action scenes sounds even remotely worth that much money....I can only imagine that this is just the cost of shooting in NYC for a long period, and all the cast and crew demanding mad money for as guaranteed a hit as anything. In any case, I'll see it, but I mean, these are hardly great movies. Check Superman, X2, Sin City, V For Vendetta, A History of Violence, Shogun Assassin, Ghost World and the first Batman animated movie from the 90s. And if Venom is killed off, that will be truly gay and will result in a grave backlash, I guarantee it.

Why Venom doesn't need a huge part...

    by W3bzpinn3r

Brock is a very simple character. He is a sleazy get-rich quick whiner who thinks the world owes him and when he can't get his way, he blames everyone else for his mistakes. No real depth needed to show that.<p> Also, Raimi hits every point of what happens when the parasite bonds with you: you gain power, you lose your mind, you eventually lose your identity, then you finally lose your body to it. There is nothing to be gained by having more of Venom or Carnage from that standpoint now. At the first sighting of the alien after SM3, Spidey would just make a loud noise and kill it. <p> That's the same reason why I don't want to see Venom in another Spider-Man movie. Lets say for the sake of argument that the parasite's bonding with brock allowed it to rebuild Brock after SM3 and become Venom once again... What now? Go after Spidey again and be reduced to ash a 2nd time? No drama. Nothing.

  • April 16, 2007, 3:16 a.m. CST

Oh... and Venom didn't make spidey popular....

    by W3bzpinn3r

Amazing Spider-Man has been one of the VERY few "stable" comics. It's sales are virtually guaranteed. While Venom certainly has a strong fan base(I being a HUGE collector of Venom myself) I would never make the claim that Venom alone accounts for Spider-Man popularity in the 90's to the current high. <p> Actually, I would say it has to do with the 90's comics-based cartoons, the major push in merchandising, and the movies that made Spider-man even more popular than he was previously. Yes, Venom is a recent creation, but think about how many good arcs involve Venom... Answer: 2. His debut and first rematch are the only things Venom has been an intriguing character in. Venom's "Lethal Protector", Carnage-related stories, and the current Gargan Venom are all jokes and just beating a dead horse til there is nothing left but a pile of broken bones.

    SPOILERS! But-

    by Style_92

Why in the hell would Harry turn and help Peter in the end? look at it this way:<br> <br> Peter Kills Harry's Father. When Harry can finally confront him on it, (two years later when Peter has lied about being spiderman the whole time) Peter DOESN'T DENY IT initially, but bascially says, "we don't have time for this."<br> <br> So, after saving MJ from Doc Oc, Peter DOESN'T go back and settle with Harry. He leaves Harry alone to stew for months. In the mean time, Harry is getting a Goblin arsenal together to go hunt Pete Down.<br> <br> Harry smacks Pete around and the streets and confronts him on the side of that building, and only cause he's losing does Peter now try to deny responsibility for killing Harry's father. Harry was right. Pete should have known this was coming.<br> <br> But Pete pulls ahead and clotheslines Harry and Harry get badly injured gets amnesia. But that starts to break, and he wants answers again and he confronts Peter again, and Peter blows half his face off with a Pumpkin bomb for asking. <br> <br> So now, Pete's in trouble, cause Sandman and Venom have decided it's time to give Spider-man a long over-due ass whupping, and Pete's pussing out cause he thinks he might die and MJ is freaking out that her meal ticket (Pete) will die, so she goes and begs Harry to save Pete. Harry reminds her that Pete killed his father, lied about it for years, belittled the importance of that death, refused to come back to settle and explain things, clothes lined Harry and then blew half his face off. So, he explains, he's not that sad to see Pete Die at this point, especially since he brought it on himself.<br> <br> Then MJ, being the nagging and self-important shrew she is, makes this speech about how "we have to forgive each other" and shit and basically calls Harry a Pussy and an asshole for not saving a former friend who totally betrayed him. For some reason we cannot fathom, Harry still somewhat respects MJ's opinion, and gets guilt tripped into saving Peter. <br> <br> Harry gets so screwed by these movies, particularly this last one, it aint even funny. And he gets killed for it too. poor bastard.

    bloated mess?

    by just pillow talk

Which movies have you been watching IG76? Unless you just got through watching Superman Returns...<p>Style_92, I don't know how that all plays out between Harry and Pete, but clearly Pete ends up turning into an ass and forgets what is important. He doesn't know how to balance his life, everything is a struggle. Not saying it's right, but his attention was probably diverted from making things 'right' with Harry. Though Harry chose to ignore what his Dad did once he discovered the Goblin arsenal. He was at the parade when the Goblin attacked after all. He ended up being consumed by revenge, hence his willingness to give Doc Ock what he needed. Poor bastard indeed.

    by Seph_J

...he faked his death in an elaborate hoax. Ben is actually living in the Caribbean with the hot Asian scientist girl from the first film. And by the way... just so you know, Sam Raimi's Spider-man films make Christopher Nolan look like Joel Schumacher...there, i've said it. Tim Burton and Sam Raimi are unbeatable.

These movies are good, but I don't need to see any more

    by Moa Kaka

Is there something else that can be made into a movie? Do I have to watch what is basically the same movie over and over, even if that movie is good? Spidey has to bring a villain to justice. Is that villain's powers stronger than his own. Nope, not in the end. Hope he can get (and keep) the girl. Wow, being Spidey is tough emotionally - do you think he wants to give it up, or can he live with the responsibility. That's all great for one move, or I could live with two movies, but how much longer do I have to re-live this story? Please do something new, Holywood.

    Spidey 4 by 2012

    by Style_92

Has to be, the world comes to an end that year anyway. <br> <br> Besides, Here's why the spidey films are intolerable upon rewatch. You realize that Tobey Maguire can't act. His whole schtick is tiny facial tics that ocilate between sad/stunned and slightly disgusted to vaguely happy-ish. When he's actually called upon to deliver lines, he mumbles them and calls it acting <br> <br> Secondly, Pete's toils in the comics were bearable because Spider-man was such an upbeat and fun character. But Spider-man is just a blank in the movies. You don't get inside his head. Oh, you get inside Pete's head for all his domestic shit, but never his thoughts and reactions to being Spider-man.

  • April 16, 2007, 2:34 p.m. CST

    Spider-man 2.1

    by Style_92

Kills pete's credibility. in the theatrical cut, it's easy to believe the clap trap that his Spider-man persona is what's messing him up in every other area of life. But rewatching as Spidey 2.1, that's revealed to be a sham. Evidence one: stopping those crooks in the car didn't take much time out of his trip, so Pete would have been late to her play and not allowed in anyway, even if it hadn't happened. Evidence 2: New scene in 2.1 where Pete is seen in Connor's class but deliberately not taking notes, just doodling.<br><br> So he IS just a lazy bastard that blows off his responsibility! being Spider-man is just incidental.

The thing is, plant has taken on a new meaning in AICN talk backs besides it's original intent. The original intent was to suggest the studio had hired someone to write a positive review and send it to Harry, posing as Joe Bloe fan, and try to trick the audience into thinking the man on the street truly liked the movie. This, has happened once or twice verifiably, but probably remains a rare case in it's truest form.<br> <br> Ofcourse, original intent of a term does not bother most talkbackers. So, the term plant is usually bandied about just to describe a person who has a positive opinion of a movie or project in which the strong tide of talkbacker opinion is negative. It's a term used by the majority to try to marginalize and dismiss the opinion of the minority. <br> <br> This ofcourse is pseudo-fascist behavior, which is common among organized fandoms. Abberant and discordant opinions must be destroyed, only then will there be harmony. It sucks, because this squelches freedom of opinion, but Whadya gonn do.

  • April 16, 2007, 4:11 p.m. CST

    Example re: Ganymede2010

    by Style_92

See here, he thouroughly misuses the term plant. either that or he genuinely beleives that the first reviewer was hired by the studio, which is an even more ignorant opinion to have. <br> <br> No, the first review was just written by one of those fans, you know them, that love the movies so much they've specifically put blinders on to ignore the faults of those movies. Just enthusiastic fan, nothing more. Most talkbackers embrace Batman Begins in this way, although it too has many large flaws to pick over.

    Spider-Man Forever (SPOILERS!)

    by MonteCristo

Marko: "I needed money for the medicine(for his daughter). I told your uncle...all I wanted was the car. I was scared. He said, 'Why don't you put the gun away and go home?' I turned to see my buddy running over with the cash. I was scared, and your uncle stood up, and I don't know, my gun went off...There was a flash, a puff of smoke, and I was standing there with this stupid expression on my face and the old guy on the ground. My buddy, good ol' Caradine, he jumped in the car and peeled outta there. Left me behind to take the fall. I got on the ground next Ben. He looked puzzled, like he couldn't understand what had gone wrong. I tried to pull him to his feet, shouted at him to get up. Then I heard the siren. I let his body slide outta my hands and to the pavement, and then I lit out of there just as the crowd was gathering. I...I spent a lotta nights wishin' I could take it back." (To his daughter) "I still want to be with you more than anything. But I did wrong. Gotta pay for what I did." Then, his daughter says, "Won't you forgive him? I know he did a terrible thing to you, but he's a good man." Then Spidey says, "We've all done terrible things. I...I forgive him." And, thus, an inane plot point was born. I'm sure they think the drama in the scene will overshadow everyone's common sense, but Batman's line sounded good too the first time. This is turning out to be another "Spider-Man Forever".

    Style_92, I agree Maguire's Spider-Man is a dud

    by superninja

and Raimi plays up the angst to the point that it's depressing and I'm rolling my eyes. Aunt May and Mary Jane are both such downers. Maguire's blankness worked okay in the first when he is supposed to come across as young and innocent, but it gets tired to continue in that vein and continue he has. The character should be much more fun, I still say Franco would've made a better Peter. You can't have real lows if you never have highs!

Train Sequence- When Spidey has to stop the moving train from leaping off of the dead-end tracks, he lodges himself on front of the train, and catches nearby buildings with his webbing to stop the momentum. I liked the quirky scenes like MJ running in the wedding dress, Peter walking along happy as a clam, Peter imagining a conversation between himself and Uncle Ben. Of course the scenes with Harry, Franco's acting is more intense I wish Maguire and Dunst would not underplay so much. It's a comic book movie, it's mythology, it's theater.

Well, I don't have the same kind of appreciation

    by superninja

for Biel as you do, clearly. I think she is a good actress, the thing is MJ doesn't really require some fantastic actress. In fact the character always sort of reminded me of a fantasy/horror character more than a real person, particularly later on. Peter seems more real to me than her, I never liked it when they were married in the comics, I always liked Gwen or Black Cat better (before she became a major slut).

Franco's Harry by far has the strongest performance (all the villains do, I guess), but he's not wierd enough for Harry. Can't figure it out with Franco. He is a really likeable actor but he just keeps picking mediocre films.

For 90 minutes we see the ladies soap each other up, probe and kiss each other, etc. Cut to Peter (as Spidey) swinging into an open window of the apartment. He takes off his mask. Smash close-up on Peter's face. His eyes flick about the apartment--he hears the shower running. Knowingly, he smiles. Fade to black, roll credits, and give me my awards.

I saw spiderman 3 last night and it IS Harry who dies trying to save Peter and Gwen Stacey at the end. Peter has to chose, Gwen, or MJ. He picked the red carpet.

    by AllPowerfulWizardOfOz

Not so favorable I don't give a shit. Nothing will keep me from seeing this movie and this review only tells me that this reviewer was not a fan of 1 or 2 so fuck um.

Im Hopeful...Until I See It Myself

    by Mr_MovieGoer

Now I heard so many spoilers for this movie, but me as a trekkie-like Spider-Man fan (or Spider-Fan if you will) I heard Venom dies and doesn't get much action or backstory. Im thinking of Venom from the 1990s Fox cartoon and I look at the Spider-Man 3-version of him. Not very similar; too puny, not a deep, raspy voice, and doesn't say "We are Venom" either. I just hope Venom and Spidey have one hell of a slobberknocker that tops any fight scene in the previous 2 films. I've watched so many different trailers and conclude that: Harry and Peter fight in the very beginning of the movie, Harry dies, Spider-Man teams up with Harry at the end resulting in Harry's death, and there wont be many surprise fight scenes since we've seen them all in the combined trailers (just like what happened when they promoted HULK) .Also, its only 2 hours and 20 minutes long. I wanted a Peter Jackson-like 3 hour epic smackdown with Venom getting at least 45 minutes of screentime. But alas, thats not the case. I hope the critics are right when they say that the fans will be pleased, because I dont think they stuck too close to the cartoon or comics that much. But hey, at least it not gonna be like the debacle that happened to X-Men: The Last Stand from what I hear.

    Can I add another comment?

    by Mr_MovieGoer

I would like to because I really hope this movie breaks the comic-trilogy curse, because I feel like I was visually molested by X-Men: The Last Stand and insulted by what they added and took away. Spider-Man 3 doesn't seem to have that problem other than Venom could've used more backstory and fightscenes. Im actually hopeful about the 3rd installment, and I might need to have a full physical beforehand so I don't have a heart-attack while taking in all the visual marvels of this film which clearly used every penny of $258 million wisely. If the movie truly is as good as the critics and fan-critics say, then we as movie goers must do everything to make sure that Spider-Man 3 topples Titanic is all-time box office sales. All it has to do is break $650 million to do so. Spidey can do it. 10 more days left until the summer movie season swings into action with the most anticipated superhero movie ever.
