Stage Five!! SOPRANOS 6.14!!

Published at:  Apr 15, 2007 11:54:01 PM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

HBO says:

Tony finds art imitating life at the "Cleaver" premiere; in prison, Johnny Sack copes with more bad news. Written by Terence Winter; directed by Alan Taylor.

What is HBO not telling us?

* Johnny Sack learns he has three months to live, thanks to the cancer that has spread throughout his body. Though he recently gave up smoking, he spent 38 years sucking in the sweet sweet tobacco.

* Johnny doesn’t disclose his dire condition to his wife and daughter. But he does take up smoking again.

* Christophuh is sober again, and doesn’t pal around with the gang as much because he doesn’t want to be tempted. The gang interprets his absences to mean he’s too much the movie-producer bigshot to hang out.

* Phil Leotardo, still recovering from a quadruple bypass, considers who will take over the New York family.

* As “Cleaver,” starring Daniel Baldwin, screens, Paulie Walnuts (now cancer-free) won’t turn off his cell. When the character based on Christophuh kills the character based on Tony, Tony grows increasingly suspicious of Christophuh. Tony cries in Dr. Melfi’s office about Christophuh’s lack of gratitude.

* As Silvio discusses business with Phil Leotardo’s new heir apparent inside a club, the new boss is gunned down by rivals.

* Word comes that Johnny Sack is dead too.

* Tony serves as Godfather at the christening of Christophuh’s baby. As Tony and Christophuh both, both seem to be reminded that Michael Corleone served as Godfather to Carlo Rizzi’s baby.

After tonight, only seven episodes left. The next five plotlines, direct from HBO (beware uninvisotexted spoilers):

6.15 - APRIL 22 - "Remember When" - With the heat turned up in Jersey, Tony and Paulie head south to cool off. Meanwhile, Junior rekindles some of his old fire in a poker game. Written by Terence Winter; directed by Phil Abraham.

6.16 - APRIL 29 - "Chasing It" - Tony hits an unlucky stretch; AJ makes a life-changing decision; Vito's widow Marie (Elizabeth Bracco) turns to Tony for help with her troubled son. Written by Matthew Weiner; directed by Tim Van Patten.

6.17 - MAY 6 "Walk Like A Man" - AJ (Robert Iler) struggles with depression; Kelli's (Cara Buono) dad (Dennis Paladino) is the unwitting catalyst of a new feud between Christopher (Michael Imperioli) and Paulie (Tony Sirico). Written and directed by Terence Winter.

6.18 - MAY 13 "Kennedy and Heidi" - An asbestos-disposal impasse raises tensions between Jersey and New York; Tony (James Gandolfini) has a revelation; Paulie gets upstaged. Written by Matthew Weiner and David Chase; directed by Alan Taylor.

6.18 - MAY 20 "The Second Coming" - Phil (Frank Vincent) turns down Tony's offer of compromise; AJ despairs about the world and his future; Tony takes umbrage over an affront to Meadow (Jamie-Lynn Sigler). Written by Terence Winter; directed by Tim Van Patten.

9 p.m. Sunday. HBO.

    The Sopranos needs repeat viewing...

    by rasputin77

There are so many brilliant moments that go unnoticed the first time around. Subtle bits of body language and facial gestures that you don't spot when you are actively trying to follow the storyline. For example, in one scene Furio tells Carmella and Tony he is sad. Tony asks him if he needs money. He takes cash out of his pocket and begins to put it back in his pocket before Furio has even refused the offer. Hard to spot the first time. The entire series really takes place underneath the dialogue and plot. Everything is superficial. Gangsters displaying outward affection for people they want dead. Carmella acting the part of the normal caring mother, hiding her own deeply immoral nature. It's possible other shows are as well-written and acted, but I doubt anything has sustained it for as long as The Sopranos has. When it goes, it will leave a hole that will be impossible to fill.

    Last man standing...

    by orlandojoe

My prediction: The last man standing when the season is finished will be A.J. He'll outlive everybody, and then we'll all gather here and talk about how lame the ending was. Seriously, I think this is one of the best TV shows ever -- it's as rich as a novel and better than most movies -- and I just hope the ending isn't as bad as the Star Wars prequels -- you know, so bad it makes you feel stupid for liking the thing in the first place. Maybe it'll just be Godfather III bad -- so bad you just pretend it never happened and savor the originals instead.

    The final episode

    by darth_gonz

Tony steps out of the shower, and hears a ringing in his ear. He passes it off as nothing, but it keeps getting stronger. As he walks downstairs to get something to drink, he begins to hear something coming from the walls of his house. As he puts his ear up to the wall to hear what it is, he finds it to be Bob Dylan's "All Along The Watchtower", and Tony realizes he is one of the final five cylons. His programming kicks in, and he blows his entire family's brains out, and then his own. END OF THE SERIES!

Gandolfini is so good it's scary. He never ever makes me think he's acting, which is an extraordinary feat. Edie Falco is pretty good too mind you. I love this show, and am both dying to see how it ends, but dreading the last episode finishing. I'm going to cry, I know it.

Exactly what does HBO have in the works? If they thought I was going to pay 14 bones a month for Big Love they are sadly mistaken.Im still a little pissed about Rome.I tell everyone to let the Carnivale bs go,because we wouldnt have BSG if it didnt end,..So we came out on top with that one.I knew Sopranos was coming to an end but, what have you got thats makin me stick around?I came home late last night and Deep Cover was on 1,Ricochet was on another and some other bullshit 90's movie was on a third,..Thre wasnt shit on all 8 channels! Now I love Bill,I love the Wire ,I love the Sopranos. But HBO needs to come up with somethin here.

    by vinceklortho

most certainly this show will leave HBO and create a huge void artistically because the show is so goddam rich. BUT, I heard the ratings are getting lower and lower while the follow-up show, Entourage, is raking it in. So, I'm sure the powers that be are thinking that this old dog is going out at the right time even though it still is one of the best shows ever made, even after a good seven seasons. As far as what HBO has in the works, before last weeks episode I saw about a dozen commercials for new upcoming series. They just had a quick clip and the name of the show. What strikes me as kinda interesting is the new David Milch show called John from Cincinnati, based off of a great surfing book. I'm sure HBO will be back in top notch form. They don't rebuild, they just reload. But, as for the Sopranos, I can't wait for tonight. Always an experience, every episode.

I'm killing my HBO subscription after Sopranos because

    by eppdude

EdRyder is right. There's gonna be nothing left. For me, I'm pissed Deadwood was canceled. But I'm more pissed at David Milch for that. And fuck John from Cinc. A rich, kick-ass western left for a surfing drama with Luke Perry in the cast??? Christ.
I also miss Rome, but at least we got good closure there.
I love Entourage, but that half hour aint worth $15 a month. I'll wait for the DVDs.
Really, though, after looking at what HBO has upcoming in the next several months, their new projects look bland.
Perhaps I'll re-up in the Fall with The Wire and the next season of Curb. But all the new series look shitty.

    by jackie boy

BTW, Mike Corleone was godfather to Carlo Rizzi's baby, fuckhat. Carlo Rizzi was his brother in law, the fucker who betrayed Sonny and beat up Connie. He got garroted at the end by Clemenza. Paulie Gatto, a childhood friend to Michael's but otherwise unrelated, set up the Don and was popped by Rocco- 'Leave the gun, take the cannoli.'

I say this because the family connection makes it all the more disturbing.

I totally agree with the poster above ...

    by itchy

you have to rewatch episodes. Everyone in them is so damn good, that there every little nuance they do means something. The scene with JT at the Bada Bing trying to convince Tony it was his idea ... and Tony clearly knowing exactly where the cut on his forehead came from was just classic. Another classic: The Director of Cleaver pulling outs some notes to talk from just as the stagehand picks up the mike and walks away. And the audience reaction shots as everyone except Tony realizes exactly who Daniel Baldwin was portraying. And amazingly, I think some of the best acting work the last 5 episodes has come from the dude playing Carmine Lupertazzi, who is both much smarter than anyone things, and also just as dumb as everyone things. Somehow, he managed to avoid a gang war that likely would have resulted in his death, and at the same time manipulated circumstances to basically make Tony (and others) come BEGGING him to to take over. The Geraldo segment where they were cautioned "not to forget about Carmine Jr." was for the audience ... clearly a tell that Carmine has a big role to play in the final episodes. I just love this show and don't know how they will ever fill the hole (moving BSG to HBO would be a great start, though)

is the older dude in Leotardo's crew, with the white hair slicked back. he showed up this year. he was one of the 4 guys who took the picture with baldwin at the after-party. This second half of the season...

    by _maltheus_

...has been much better than the first half. Why couldn't they have started things with the NY power struggle? Phil needs to chill the fuck out. Loved the story bout his name though. Still, I never really got his obsession with vengeance over his cousin (or whatever) when the killer is dead. He was getting along with Tony. How'd he get to that old age going overboard on some silly grudge that would have been the death of any 20 year old? This is the first episode that made me feel like there was a chance for Tony to survive the show. I can see him trying to get out somehow.

it seems to me that either Christopher is going to wack Tony or vice versa. I agree with SK229 that i would like to see Anthony Jr. totally fuck over his family. Wha twas up with his girl. Phil

    by yassoo

is obsessed about his BROTHER getting wacked by Tony's cousin (the steve buscemi charachter). I totally buy his obsession, and the fact that he's questioning his own strength over the years, which will probably lead to some scores being settled about it, especially now that Sack is dead.

    Obsession

    by _maltheus_

Right but Tony had little to do with that other than wacking his cousin before Phil could get to him. Tony's response was understandable enough and they've been working well enough together all this time that a sudden resurgence of anger just comes across as a bit unnatural to me. He can never have closure since Buscemi is dead. Then again, these are mobsters so maybe I just can't relate.

But when Johhny Sac was detailing info from the past and naming names to the other prisoners and teh orderly(doctor), I thought that was a hint that it might be used as evidence in a trial in the future. We can assume he's had loose lips ever since he found out he had 3 months to live. Anyway, great, great ep. But I loved last weeks as well, kind of in the vein of "Pine Barrens" but not as standalone ad Pine.

    Last Night's...

    by therealmoriarty

... was pretty great, I thought.

Anyone who says that the show isn't moving towards big events isn't paying attention at this point. There are so many relationships that are on high simmer at this point that Chase can just spend the rest of the season knocking things down, one at a time.

I thought Tony's moment with Melfi this week was chilling. "I know too much about the subconscious." Chris better get his ass out of town.

When the car pulled up at the end of the driveway, I said to my wife, "Why does Tony even get his own paper anymore?" So his line in the kitchen got a round of applause from me.

Finally, I'll give it up for a great AJ line. "Did you two have a fight?" "I don't know." I will miss AJ. I still think the episode where he got his eyebrows shaved off is one of the greatest sight gags of all time.

    End Credits Song

    by boxcutter

...is "Chickentown" by the legendary John Cooper Clarke, "punk poet". Superbly calibrated episode, and PACKED with subtext and - as Mori says - many simmerings. Gratuitous funny of the night: Paulie answering his cell during the "Cleaver" premiere, and - just as we see the babe succumbing to the mob boss onscreen - saying loudly into the phone, "Make sure she puts it in the trunk..."

    by boneisking

Once again, Chase's song placement perfectly underscores the moment and manages to be innovative at the same time. As the illustrious Boxcutter indicated above - "Chickentown", though totally random and on the surface unrelated, captures all the impending doom that awaits the majority of these characters. Murder may not be on all of their plates, but I highly doubt that any of these marvelous and tortured Ginzos will walk away from this dance clean.
