Christina Ricci drops the chain and instead snaps the Mach 5's seat-belt around her waist!!!

Published at:  Apr 13, 2007 3:29:08 PM CDT

Hey there. Quint here again. Warner Bros sent out a short interview with Ricci where she talks about her character... Thought you might be interested...

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with another bit of good casting news on the Wachowski Bros' big screen adaptation of SPEED RACER.

They've just cast Christina Ricci as Trixie, Speed (Emile Hirsch)'s girlfriend. John Goodman and Susan Sarandon are already onboard as Speed's parents.

This project is just bizarre to me. I've said it before... it's just weird this exists... and it keeps attracting interesting people.

Not crazy about Sarandon at all. Too old. I sorta thought Speed's mom was hot too. Not as hot as Trixie, of course. I have to agree that Elisha Cuthbert would have been a better choice as SHE is, in fact, VERY hot.

I'd hate to say it, but Jim Belushi might actually be a good choice for Pops. Given Speed's age, the only two people I can see as Racer X are Joaquin Phoenix and Heath Ledger... or MAYBE Keanu... if he was a much older brother. Hehe. Give Sparky to Topher Grace. He'd be great.

CGI is ruining the careers of our great monkey actors!

    by kid z

Time was, you used to see chimps and other apes on TV and in movies all the time. Hell, back in the 50's there was a chimp anchorman on the Today Show! And let's not forget the 60's and Lancelot Link, Secret Chimp... a veritable Justice League of lower primate talent. Those were the glory days! The Evolution Revolution was on the Billboard charts, and chimp actors (and actresses) were respected and living the good life! The good times continued into the 70's with Any Which Way But Loose and its sequel with a fine pongoloid performance that brought a new generation of young turk Orangutans into the Hollywood limelight. Alas, these glory days were soon to end, however, as ape actors fell out of favor in the 80s. An Attempt to revive the genre in the 90's with Dunston Checks In proved to be a misguided death knell. Computer technology also had a hand as when Peter Jackson, casting for the lead in King Kong, hired a human being in a motion capture suit hooked up to a bank of computers to bring the legendary beast to cinematic life. Personally, I think this is a slap in the face to struggling ape actors everywhere as well as an example of speciesism run rampant. Thankfully, we are long past the days when an African American is played by a caucasian with shoe polish on his face, or an Asian by an English actor with a rubber band around his head to pull his eyes into a slant. Using a computer to play an ape is equally discriminatory. It's an outrage that demands justice! I propose we start a petition right now. Let's gather signatures and send them to the Wachowskis demanding that Chim-Chim be played by an actual ape actor. If they refuse and instead use computers and a guy in a motion capture suit, I say we boycott the resulting cinematic atrocity! APE POWER NOW!

...she's way too old. The guy playing Speed was old enough, but Ricci is even older still. Weren't these characters, at most, 16? I do like the casting and I think the movie will turn out boss from what I've heard so far, but I think the age will kind of spoil the iconic image of the characters. Maybe you guys don't care, but it has to be said. I guess everybody will be CGI deyoungified. Reeves too, if he is Racer X, is awesome, but he's over 40 by now. Sarandon and Goodman are about to keel over, now that I mention it, though I love them.

I hardly doubt -- unless this was a live action show on the Disney Channel -- that anyone would buy into a 16 year old driving the most advanced car in the world in major racing events around the globe. I don't know why people alway think of Speed being SO young, even looking at the cartoon. He and Trixie were youthful, but they're clearly NOT teens. They're early to mid 20-somethings...Racer X is more like a full grown man, 30-ish...and Pops is still vigorous in his early 50's. Which is EXACTLY the age casting we're seeing so far.My only gripe is Sarandon. She's actually OLDER than Goodman, by about 6 years. Someone above noted Speed's mom was clearly a babe, too, so I would've preferred a hotter MILF in her Forties as opposed to someone who has now officially entered her SIXITES (and yes, Sarandon has) and who's OLDER than Pops...
