Rob Marshall fires up another musical, this time he's belting out NINE!!!

Published at:  Apr 13, 2007 3:09:22 AM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I don't know too much about Broadway musicals, so I don't know anything about NINE (not to be confused with Shane Acker's CG animated sci-fi movie 9 or John August's THE NINES) other than what is readily available at the stroke of my... keyboard...

But I do know that I liked CHICAGO a lot and MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA was pretty looking. It's interesting to see Rob Marshall return to the musical.

And looking up NINE, it seems like it'd be up my alley, since it's a take on Fellini's 8 1/2, an autobiographical story of a film director and the women in his life.

To be honest, I was never really taken with 8 1/2. It's one of those movies you see where you really know you should like it a lot more than you are because it's supposed to be so great. But then again, I saw it as a teenager, part of an Austin Film Society series. Maybe a revisit is in order, maybe I'll appreciate it more now.

The Weinstein Co. is putting NINE out and a screenwriter will be announced shortly.

    This could be great.

    by bungion boy

This is a wonderfully surreal musical. Beautiful operatic music but also strange and funny. Far from a crowd pleaser like Chicago. I saw Antonio Bandares do this on Broadway a few years ago. It was probably the best thing I've ever seen him do. The play calls for one man and then many many women. It's fairly close to 8 1/2. It could be a really great film. Or it could be a complete misfire. We'll see.

I feel that way about all Fellini films I've seen

    by spandau belly

I get that there is a visual cleverness at work and some good sequences but the movies never amuse, challenge, or stay with me. I feel like Almodovar does everything Fellini did in a way that I actually enjoy watching.

    8 1/2

I've always felt it was a decent hour and a half of comedy with an hour of Fellini talking about himself tacked on. Still, it beats the excruciating "La Dolce Vita."

    Nine

"Nine" is one of my favorite musicals of all time. A perfect Maury Yeston score. It actually won the Tony over "Dreamgirls" that year, also beating "Dreamgirls" score. What is unique about the stage show (and presumabley about the movie) is that its one man surrounded by the tweleve major women in his life, each with a song, each a showcase for a particular actress. Lots of opportunities for old musical theatre actresses like Minelli and Streisand and new ones like Zeta-Jones and Anika Noni Rose. It should be a great.

    An Amazing Musical!

    by deacon8lues

Nine is in my top three favorite musicals. I loved 8 1/2 and all things Fellini. This will make an excellent transition to screen, especially with Rob Marshall at the helm. Too bad Raul Julia isn't around to reprise one of his best roles. Which makes me wonder how they will cast Guido. I'm sure one of the top choices they will be courting is Antonio Banderas since he lead the 2003 revival and since he's got star power. But he's not the best singer for this role. I guess I'll just have to sit back and wait to hear how this one progresses.

Jackman, YES! Even though he doesn't look Italian!

    by annoyyou

Didn't Antonio Banderas do this on Broadway? I don't like his singing voice, though -- Jackman's is spectacular, though. Just so long as they don't get Ewan McGregor -- I know he sounded OK in "Moulin Rouge," but he's really not a good singer. Wow, there are a lot of great female roles in this, too. The mind reels. Hope it actually happens.
