MUMMY 3 becomes much less interesting... bye-bye Rachel Weisz!

Published at:  Apr 11, 2007 11:24:39 PM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I can't say I blame Rachel Weisz for ditching the Mummy series. I'll be sad, because it was her presence that helped get me through them so far. But ditch it she has, according to Variety.

They also report that Brendan Fraser will be returning after closing an incredibly lucrative deal. Good for him getting a payday, but he's not as adorable to watch... okay, he's close, but not quite as cute as Weisz.

Rob Cohen is directing, Jet Li's the baddie (cool), Miles Millar and Alfred Gough (SMALLVILLE) are scripting.

You're ignorant. Superninja, you're right on the money. It's almost impossible to believe that the concept for VAN HELSING could be screwed up. I did go see it twice to make sure, and sure enough Stephen Sommers turned gold into straw.

    Good reason

    by the game master

Rachel left for good reason: "The Mummy Returns" sucked. Then Sommers really f'd up Van Helsing. At least they have a new director. There's hope. But why do they need to obviously rip off Pirates of the Caribbean by going to China? WTF does an Egyptian Mummy have to do with China? If they wanted to do something original, they should have done deeper into Africa, or the Holy Land. Rachel made a good decision by jumping shit--I mean, ship. Now, if this has a title OTHER without the word "mummy" in it, like "The Further Adventures of Rick O'Connel", then going to China is justified. Maybe they should have "Chyna" (the former wrestler) be the new leading lady. That would be fun!

    by superninja

That is almost mathematically impossible. For me, at least. :) I mean, all the classic movie monsters in one place and THAT'S what you come up with? Sommers should just be beaten repeatedly. And Brendan Fraiser is not a reason to return to the Mummy. Weisz and Velasquez were the only cool things about both movies. Vosloo's Imhotep is right up there with Nip and Tuck's Dr. Doom. Oded Fehr would actually have been a better lead.

Frasier has no charisma. The best thing he was ever in was Gods and Monsters where he played meathead eye candy. I bet it's a prequel so they will ditch Weisz and their kid. It'll basically be a remake of Temple of Doom set in China with some borderline racist jokes and a hot asian babe.

Fresh eye-candy for Brendan is a good idea. As for Jet Li, face it, however nice he is in person, in the movies this guy is beter as the villain. This does have the potential to be quite good.

The first Mummy was probably the single most enjoyable film I remember seeing, behind things like star wars, indy, & more obscure Army of darkness and Hot fuzz. The Mummy was and is a fucking classic. While I'm not to big on the second one, I did enjoy the direction they attempted to take it. It was let down by the fact that it took itself much too seriously - unlike the first, which was just pure film-goer gold. Hey, I love outragous shit with big jerry goldsmith style scores. Here's hoping the third one is of the same calibre. And you know what, I think with weiz gone this film has a chance. Having O'connel and Evy married with a kid destroyed the whole dynamic of who those two characters were. Write her out with bitterness and have O'connel hardened by her unfaithfulness!

I bet she has scheduling conflicts, she doesn't seem like the type to turn it down flatly on principle. I don't think Brandon's gonna be quite as hunky by the time they roll this out so they better make cast change and put Brad Renfro in (whats' he doing anyway?!) as the son.

Heck, it was played out after the first film. No one's going to miss Evelyn. Brenden and a new female co-star sounds just about right. O'Connell's the heart and soul of these films anyway. Just give him a sob scene where he misses Evelyn and mentions her and their son's deaths, and then leave it at that. Anyone know if John Hannah is coming back for the third film? Now he I'd miss.

"O'Connell is the heart and soul of these films?"

    by superninja

Hahahah....He is the worst most hammy cliched character in all of these movies! He's painful to watch. The Rock was more interesting that he was, Voslo's Mummy was more interesting, everyone was more interesting than Fraser's character. Evie was the cutest most likeable part about the first film, I loved her character and her brother.

    This is what happens.

This is what happens when you try to milk a cow too far.

The franchise was just fine the way it was. They continue to try and drag things out too far and ruin everything.

    We'll miss you, Evie !

Seriously, how much of her time would a cameo take, one or two days? Now we're just gonna get a cheesy father/son flick with fucking Jet Li as the bad guy.

The first one is tolerable escapist entertainment...

    by condomwrapper

Good God that second one was painful. I still remember Ebert's review where he points out, even for a fantasy crap movie like the Mummy Returns, that it's absolutely asinine that a character could out run a rising sun. Van Helsing bored me to tears even if I wanted to put butter all over Kate Beckinsale and lick every part of her gorgeous body while she talks in that awful Translyvanian or whatever it is accent. Stephen Sommers should've suffered castration by butter knife for making Van Helsing SUCK despite having every major Universal monster. I don't mind if it's bad, but does it have to be boring too???

Weisz's character was the worst part of the first one

    by allfather starr

Oh great, here's another yank movie interpretation of an English person, born with a silver spoon in the mouth, all yes sir, no sir, three lumps of sugar in my afternoon tea sir. Fuck off. She was a tired cliche who was merely there to spout stupid tripe like "Oh my good heavens" and "Oh Lordy me", etc. You guys think all English people live in country manors, have butlers, and go to huge private schools, a la 3 men and a little lady. Tally ho, and what-not! Dipshits.

    ROB COHEN?

    by gozu

I mean, I like Rachel Weisz and all, but fucking Rob Cohen? You know what, as much shit as Stephen Sommers gets, he did a good job with the "Mummy" series. Meanwhile, Rob Cohen gave us "Stealth," "XXX," and the runs. At least "Wolfman" sounds cool.

I liked the first Mummy, thought the second was fun but stupid, and think putting this out anywhere in the vicinity of Indy 4 is probably a bad idea. But we'll see i guess.

    Jet Li > Rachel

    by gibsonusa returns

Come on, a shallow popcornfest like Mummy.... people watch it then forget about what they saw the next day. Rachel is not a household name...replace her and no one in the target audience notices. Jet Li, however, is a presence. I may watch this movie if he gets to cut loose without too too much CG/wirefu.

    calm down, Allfather Starr.

    by council estate scumbag

we DO all have butlers in blighty. we have butlers on my council estate who run errands for us all...or they get shot in the head. we have gardeners too. they're called maggots that sort out our window boxes. those crazy yank fucks have got it right sez i. i got a country manor too. its called southend central train station. i go there, urinate on platform 4, dine in the luxury waiting room with my kebab, my butler (the staion master) usually tries to clean up fallen kebab and vomit, and we play beautiful music from our mobile phones for all to hear. then my chauffuer (the fuckiing train) takes us back to London.

    Rachel Weisz as Laura Bow

    by loungelizard

I've always thought the look of Weisz in The Mummy would be perfect for the role as Laura Bow, the amateur detective of the Sierra games of yesteryear. It would be interesting if they spun off a pre-Mummy Evelyn character for a TV series and molded it as Laura Bow.

    Halloween68.....worst writers?

    by liljuniorbrown

Sorry my man, That show has gotten better each and every year since the initial "krypto freak of the week" season one. This year alone they gave us a kick ass Batman style Green Arrow and an evil Lex. Smallville is the best superhero show on television now and I can't remember one(live action anyways) in history that was better. As far as The Mummy goes, i'm in the minority of people who really enjoyed the first one. The Mummy had a very enjoyable cast, awesome (epic) score and of course the hottness of Mrs.Weisz. I wasn't crazy about Mummy Returns mainly because the sexual tension and playfulness was gone between Fraser and Weisz. I know i'm going to catch shit for this but I have always thought this role was perfect Fraser,to me it was his "John Maclane".

Why would YOU watch and "endure" a(ny) film about ADVENTURE, Egyptian mythology, AND SHIT LIKE THAT (with humorous flavour), mostly because of some TOKEN LOVE SHINTEREST LEAD?! Sure, it is very LOL to visualize a film geek being carried in the arms of a pretty face actress..."Yippee, I made it through this! Thanks, Rachel!"

    MUMMY 3: KA BACK.

    by cult exiter

This will hit bigger than ever... Mummy stories were never good just because of some actresses. And modern babes don't SCREAM properly.
When you encounter a mummy, you scream!! Unless, it's the balsamized corpse of your own mommy. It's pharaohs, monsters, a fantasy fucking desert ride under the sun - that people love.
