The Jackie Chan/Jet Li Project gets an official name and a pair of studios!!!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. That bizarro crazy nuts Jackie Chan/Jet Li flick now has a name!
THE FORBIDDEN KINGDOM
Not bad. "Jet Li and Jackie Chan in... THE FORBIDDEN KINGDOM!" I'd see that movie.
Lionsgate and The Weinstein Co. are co-distributors. Rob "Meh" Minkoff (or is that Meh-inkoff?) directing and the master, Yuen Wo Ping, is doing the fight choreography and Peter Pau, who shot CROUCHING TIGER is shooting this one. Production begins next month.
Gonna be a crazy movie.

to say I really want to see this!
-
What was all that crap about Fearless (i think that's what it was called) being Jet Li's last movie? More fucking bullshit.
-
or very mundane. I love the idea of all of the production apart from the modern setting (if that's what they go for) and the director.
-
was that Fearless was the last movie he claimed he was showcasing martial arts at its finest. Now that he's older he's no longer claiming to master the art, but he'll still do plenty of movies because people can't really tell.
-
I heard fearless (or was it hero) was his last martial arts film. We have no idea what he is doing in this yet...and so what if it isn't? You saying you want to see Jet Li hand in his spurs? Boy, you is crazy!
-
So he's basically saying "Just watch my old shit, this new stuff is going to be kind of crap because the weather is playing havoc with my arthritis." So this movie will be akin to the martial arts version of Grumpy Old Men.
-
Not saying that mate, I just hate the attempted manipulation to get bums on seats. But then it wouldn't really bother me all that much if he did quit, he won't be bettering his back catalogue as his age advances, and I was always more of a Sammo fan anyway.
-
using american movies (like chan did) as his retirement home.
-
I don't want to hear any of Jet Li's "I want to do serious dramatic roles not martial arts films from now on" Crap. Or Jackie Chan's "I'm going to start using a stunt man" garbage. And no Wire FU either, I'm sick of that shit. And I don't want to hear either one uttering one word in English. Chan or Li in an English speaking role = Instant suckage.
-
Yeah that sucks when that happens, and then Hollywood always screws with the excellent asian stars and directors, watering down their work to pallid imitations of what they once were. I offer you Chow Yun Fat and John Woo as two further examples.
-
Jet Li said it would be his "last martial arts epic." In the context of the quote though, he was referring to 'Fearless' in the since of it being his last period martial arts epic film like his many 'Once Upon A Time In China' films where he played folk hero Wong Fei Hung. he never said he'd stop doing action/martial arts films. The studio just ran with the quote and construed it so we'd all go see it as his last film. It was a major disservice to him. He's still going to do action films with martial arts.
-
Ended with the fuck-up reel in the credits, and in every damn one he broke his foot jumping between buildings. If neither of these guys breaks their feet on this movie, it'll be hollywood bullshit. That's the test I'm giving it.
-
when people stretched out the talkbacks??
-
err guys, i think jet li said fearless was going to be his last "wushu" martial arts flick. He said he was still going to do "action" movies with fighting and stuff, he's just not going to use the wushu style. He'll probably now fight like jackie chan now, with tu tu and all...
-
dodgy how the marketing department for fearless left out wushu and just said his last martial arts movie...
-
Two martial art studs...ten years past anything resembling their prime...but they still got it. Both are talented at their craft and the experience of both their years should make an interesting movie. The problem I have is this: Jackie Chan is a comedy guy. Jet Li is Mr. Intense. Is this going to be a buddy movie, or the martial arts version of the Odd Couple?
-
I really like him. I realy WANT to like his films. But. Honestly. They are always totally lame. And Jet Li flicks are pretty much hit or miss depending on the director really. I suspect this is going to be stinking up a cinema near you soon...
-
maybe he meant epic martial arts flicks, or lame martial arts flicks. he'll be kickass in this one though.
-
There already was a martial arts version of the Odd Couple, and it was, bizzarely, Odd Couple. It starred Sammo Hung and Lau Kar Wing, and it's got some of the greatest weapon fights ever.
-
in full makeup and costume. Hopefully he won't look as shitty or unrealistic as Russell Wong did in THE LOST EMPIRE. He looked very un-monkey-like.
-
and not another lame 18th century swordfight pg-13 borefest.
-
He'd better, because I'm not queing to see any Jet-Li romantic comedies any time soon. I'd watch 'em, but I aint queing!
-
You've never seen a Jackie Chan film that you've liked? They're totally lame? The good thing about folk like you is you let us know that AICN has members from other planets. What planet do you come from? Mercury? Mars? Jupiter? Okay, where do I begin... Snake In The Eagles Shadow, Drunken Master... etc. Oh, Welcome to planet Earth. Make yourself at home. We too have Starbucks.
-
Seeing jet li and jackie chan together, playing second fiddle to a kid in an adaptaion of a story that has been told on screen more than 10 times is gonna be absolutely funderfull! Its gonna .... ah who the fuck am i kidding? This shit aint good enough ! The only way li and chan should have teamed up was in a early 90s big budget stunt and fight filled hong kong action film directed by yune wo ping with a running time of 3 fucking hours ! You know, come to think of it , why didnt golden harvest do a team up movie with these stars back in early 90s when the hong kong film industry was at its peak ? Im pretty sure if it happened the movie would have been the highest grossing HK film at the time. Any way back to reality- this film will be shit.
-
Aah that was a great show! Can't see Jet Li playing Monkey though...just doesn't do it for me...I am both exited and scared of this movie idea...I suspect a huge internet buzz followed by $11 opening weekend and lots of "foreign sales and dvd returns" talk...I really wanna see a proper Monkey movie...with the chick monk, Pigsy, Sandy, and the Monkey dude himself...that would rock...(the tv movie sucked by the way)...Oh and movie studios, DUMP THAT LOHAN CHICK - SHE IS A WASTE OF SPACE! Ahem. Thank you.
-
should be in there somewhere. cause kung fu hustle was the best fricking kung fu movie ever,
-
As I said I never seen a Chan movie I've liked. However I've not seen Snake In The Eagles Shadow or Drunken Master. However I have seen Supercop, Rumble in the Bronx, Rush Hour, The Tuxedo and Shanghai Knights. I admit there may be better Chan films but the trend seems to be that they are getting increasingly cheesey. I'll check out the couple you mention though.

There's only one Jackie Chan movie you should check out
by motoko kusanagi
and that is POLICE STORY.
-
...was Jet Li's best movie action and acting wise to date, he has yet to top that. I thought Fearless might be able to but that shit was boring as hell.
-
Fist of Legend...oh wait...thats Li...hmm...
-
I'm sure they'll give us a crappy cut of the film. What has Stephen Chow been up to?
-
Michael Angarano will be the co-star with Li and Chan. They are going to be in Hong Kong doing intense martial arts training very soon. How do I know? I just do.
-
my ass.... i do admit that police story is still my fave tho... but check out classics like meals on wheels, armour of god etc.
look here: http://www.hollywood.com/celebrity/Jackie_Chan/190072
1/2 his films and good and 1/2 are wank tho! i have about 30 odd JC movies.
also check out ong bak - probably the best martial arts action in a film. -
Jet Li is still the man. And Jackie Chan is a legend. I'm already there.
-
An older Jet Li flick.
-
and you'd have a three generational five-star ass-kicking extravaganza the likes of which this planet has never seen.
-
i'll see any movie he has a hand in. best fight scenes ever thanks to his work.
-
If they were making a movie based on the Monkey TV series that is...which they are not! damn them!
This is a modern re-telling of the Monkey King story...well as far as I have heard anyway. -
Donnie Yen's upcoming flick is going to be awesome.
http://tinyurl.com/2gcjt6
-
I don't want him to retire either but I knew it was bullshit when they said Fearless was his last martial arts film.
-
Didn't Jet Li say he's done making martial arts films? Does that mean this will be a light-hearted romp with two foreign elders waddling their way through English dialog with no payoff for which they are famous?
-
We need a live-action Jackie Chan Adventures movie.
-
had given up on martial arts movies to make all those weighty dramas he wants to be so well known for.
-
What Li meant was that he was ding no more Hero/Fearless type films, no more Fist of Legend type films. Basically, no more movies about ancient China with large kung fu setpieces and fights....so expect more Cradle/Romeo/The One etc films from him as well as Kiss of the Dragon type films in the future.
By the way, wasn't Jet Li supposed to be playing Seraph in the Matrix sequels? What happened there? I know he was talking about it with Joel Silver, but obviously he didn't play any role in Reloaded or Revolutions. Did he pull out of the project or something? -
All Minkoff's previous projects have been childrens films...Is this going to be one as well?
-
Has Jet Li come close being as badass as he was there?
-
Most folks just never paid close enough attention to the FEARLESS previews. As several other observant people above have said, FEARLESS was advertised as his last Epic or historical martial arts film.
-
kid-erific!! Two mild action set pieces with improbable wire work and lots of wasted potential. This time its times two!!
-
Damn PG-13 has ruined my cursing, action and nudity in movies!
-
Maybe this movie will be like Milo & Otis with Jet Li as Danny the Dog and Jackie Chan as Kit the Kat.
-
should be interesting
-
but the movie is in good hands with woo ping choreographing. As long as its not too little kiddy it should be pretty bad ass. Yeah Ong Bak and The Protector (Tom Yum Goong) with Tony Jaa are the best recent martial arts movies by far.

If there is only one Jackie Chan movie, or only one martial arts movie for that matter, that everyone needs to see it is Drunken Master II (Legend of the Drunken Master in the US).
IMHO, these are his other best films:
Drunken Master
Snake In The Eagles Shadow
Police Story
Project A
Project A II
Heart of Dragon
-
Drunken Master, Snake In The Eagles Shadow, Police Story, Project A, Project A II, and Heart of Dragon
-
Thanks for the recommendations. UK people - there is a season of martial arts films showing at the National Film Theatre in London. See the link http://tinyurl.com/yrqrr8
-
...is THIS going to be Jet Li's final movie? Gosh I hate broken promises. Jackie Chan rocks!
-
They finally get them together and we get a kids movie... Can't HOllywood do anything right?
-
mr ahole ramirez, Cleopatra wasn't old line Egyptian, she was a Ptolemy, who were Greek.
-
...then grow up into Tom Cruise to save Japan! What would asians do without white people?? (sarcasm)
-
According to my wife who checks the Chinese gossip site wenxuecity.com on a daily basis(as I do this site), she said Chow's next film is called SHAOLIN GIRLS. No word if it's a sequel to the amazing SHAOLIN SOCCER.

I'm sorry buit I'm gettn kinda tired of Yuen Wo Ping
by the_shogun_gunslinger
dont get me wrong, he does some good stuff, especially his earlier work (pre-matrix) but im tired of seeing fights where punches are more like taps.
-
better be chock full of hot asian chicks kickn the shit outta people...and i dont mean in a gay "So Close" fashion. but knowing Chow he will make every actress look like a dog haha...oh well, that man fucking knows movies.
-
the ultimate jester, the original"mask"...hope they use Manara's graphic novel version of the story.
-
kicked ass.
-
You beat me to it!
-
I am also interested to see how Jet Li plays my namesake as well. BTW the new Stephen Chow project (that just wrapped production) is "A Hope" aka "Long RIver 7". Its a scifi comedy starring Stephen, with dinosaurs..I shit you not. I have sent tons of info into this site and they never post it. Check out monkeypeaches to see production stills.

To promote the movie Fearless the studio said it would be Jet's last martial arts epic...later Jet(in a interview) said what he said was taken out of context. He went on to clarify that he meant it would be the last movie in which he plays a legendary chinese hero (like wong fei hung) in a martial arts epic. He has allready completed his new film Warlords, It's a heroic tale of three blood brothers and their struggle in the midst of war and political upheaval. It is based on "The Assassination of Ma," a Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) story about the killing of general Ma Xinyi. Ma will be played by Jet Li. Siu-Tung Ching the action director for Curse of The Golden Flower is doing fight choreography. Now this sounds like a kung fu epic..with Jet playing the legendary lead character...so I think the marketing people for Fearless just twisted Jet's comment to get butts in the seats, and its likely Jet was under pressure to not dispute those comments, doing so would make the studio look like big fat liars just out to make a buck. So...Jet said he wouldn't play another legendary chinese hero...well you dont get more legendary or chinese with the monkey king and longevity monk. The marketing said Fearless would be his last martial arts movie.... Jet's next 3 movies: Warlords, War (rogue), and The Forbidden Kingdom are all martial arts movies starring Jet Li. I also have to mention Michelle Yeoh is possibly co-starring in the mummy 3, which indicates that the mummy 3 will also be a martial arts action movie. Guess what...the people behind the marketing for your favorite movies are totally full of shit!
-
Did you see unleashed? Those were not love taps!
-
It ought to be "Jackie Chan and Jet Li Kick Ass" or "Chan-kata!" or "Stomp-Fu." And Jessica Biehl should be nude in it. In a dozen separate scenes, all of them over five minutes long, and most with me on top of her.
-
...is hard to say, since he's made so many modern-set action movies with minor kung fu action/mostly stunts, and so many old school kung fu films with that old school kung fu flavor (Simon Yuen WHAT!). So, to cheat a bit, I'd pick Police Story for the former, and Drunken Master for the latter, as the most iconic movies he made in each genre. I can't think of any good American movies he's made, but most of his Hong Kong stuff, especially when he teams up with SUPER DRAGON BROTHERS Sammo Hung (see his shit: Eastern Condors and Millionaire's Express) and Yuen Biao (see his shit: he's in both of the Hung films mentioned, but also check out On the Run and Righting Wrongs) in stuff like Wheels on Meals and Dragons Forever that you get not only insane stunts and awesome kung fu action (none of the "almost" kung fu he uses in his American stuff) courtesy of Sammo Hung direction, but also the patented 80s Hong Kong attitude that mixes extreme melodrama with what-the-fuck slapstick comedy with action cinema entertainment (and always, ALWAYS, in every one of those fucking movies, is there scene where the resident hottie gets out of the shower and every male member of the cast somehow oogles from a hidden space). So Chan is great, trust me, American movies just don't have the same off-the-wall style that HK cinema used to be about, and which Chan flourished in for so many years. Case in point, in his American movies with HK stars, there's always a great focus on Chan's character, or the character of any other Asian martial arts actor, like, say, Jet Li, specifically being a martial arts master, but in most of these HK movies the characters, whether they be thieves, cops, assassins, superheroes, or whatever, just start doing kung fu out of nowhere and it's taken for granted that, hey, it's kung fu time up in here. Now, all that being said, it's a real shame Li and Chan couldn't have teamed up in a HK flick in the 80s or early 90s; it's not such a big deal that there's a kid involved, though it is, of course, awful - what I mean by that contradiction is that an HK movie made back in the heydey would have found a way to make the movie hilarious, awesome, bad-ass and great (and by great I mean *totally sweet*) even with the kid, because their filmmaking was just so insane, while an American movie, or, we must admit, a HK movie made now in its pretty lame current industry, will boringly have to explain every last fucking thing to the little twerp instead of having gobs of insane shit happening every ten seconds. Well...at least we have Chinese Odyssey with Stephen Chow for some true Monkey King madness. Go see that, and weep for what could have been.
