SPIDEY!! LOVEJOY!! CRYPT!! RESCUE ME!! SAN FRANCISCO!! Herc’s Season-Box DVD Vault!!

Published at:  Apr 11, 2007 3:03:04 AM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

So there was this great Don Siegel movie titled “Dirty Harry,” which was released in December 1971 and was basically about a pissed-off San Francisco police detective who catches the Zodiac serial killer. It was a huge hit for Clint Eastwood, spawning many sequels. The real Zodiac killer, of course, was never captured, and bodies kept piling up in Central California well into the 1970s.

ABC used to love to rip off hit movies. “Happy Days.” “Battlestar Galactica.” “Tales of The Gold Monkey.” You get the idea. Less than nine months after the release of “Dirty Harry,” ABC premiered “The Streets of San Francisco,” about a pair of Bay Area homicide detectives. The first half of its first season hits DVD today. This being 1972 television, the two detectives – played by Kirk Douglas spawn (and future movie star) Michael Douglas and longtime Marlon Brando associate Karl Malden (“A Streetcar Named Desire,” “On The Waterfront,” “One Eyed Jacks”) - were rather less angry and menacing than Harry Callahan.

Douglas, assigned to sport the Callahan-esque coif and sideburns, was still a regular on “Streets” in early 1976 when he won the Best Picture Oscar for producing “One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest.” He left the series a few months later, and was replaced in the show’s final season by Richard Hatch, who went on to play Apollo and Tom Zarek on different incarnations of “Battlestar Galactica.”

The TV-movie that served as the show’s pilot (based on the Carolyn Weston novel “Poor, Poor Ophelia”) as well as the first season’s 13 episodes are components of the new set. Extras include a 4-minute interview of the show’s stars by Variety columnist Army Archerd and a 9-minute pilot presentation.

“Streets,” was just one of a great many Quinn Martin-produced TV projects, which included “The Fugitive,” “The Invaders,” “Dan August” (starring a pre-“Deliverance” Burt Reynolds), “Banyon” (starring a post-“Medium Cool” Robert Forster), “Cannon,” “Barnaby Jones,” “The FBI” “Caribe,” “Most Wanted,” “The Manhunter” and of course “Quinn Martin’s Tales of the Unexpected.”

Martin made his mark as a TV producer by overseeing 1959’s “The Scarface Mob” two-parter for the anthology series “Westinghouse Desilu Playhouse.” “Scarface” starred Neville Brand as Al Capone, Bruce Gordon as Capone henchman Frank Nitti and Robert Stack as hard-charging federal agent Eliot Ness. Those two episodes evolved into the Martin-produced ABC Desilu spinoff series “The Untouchables,” which featured Gordon’s Nitti as a recurring character throughout the show’s four-season run. The cinema version of the pilot and the first 14 episodes of the first season are featured on the new "Untouchables" set released today.

    Larry Sanders Season 1

    by bungion boy

That's also getting a rerelease next week. This is great news since it's been out of print for a few years. The Best Of DVD was reportedly in lieu on season sets, but if they're rereleasing season 1 then there might be hope for the rest of the seasons in the years to come. I guess we'll see how these new discs sell. I know I'll still be buying Not Just Best Of regardless.

    I couldn't agree more, Rendell

    by franklin t marmoset

I was horrified to see Lovejoy in the title. Don't let the Americans see that - they'll know how crap most of our telly is!Oh, and Venkie007. It's just a joke, mate. A twisting of the Simpsons word 'embiggened', I believe. When you think about it, that's actually kind of clever, this being a TV related article and all...

    by zer0cool2k2

    What the Hell's with that?
I'd love to have Rescue Me on Blu-Ray, but for $21 more than the standard discs, not so sure. However, Weeds first season on Blu-Ray for $19.99, not a bad deal.

    LOVEJOY!!! AT LAST!!!!

    by kevred

Sorry for all the exclamation points (I am aware of Terry Pratchett's feelings on that subject, and concur), but it has taken SO long for Lovejoy to arrive in region 1 DVD. The Brits have had it for ages, and I've been baffled that with Ian McShane's much higher profile here in recent years that this hasn't been available before. Love, love, love this show and will be very happy to have it at last. Also good to see some classic Doctor Whos here (Logopolis, Castrovalva)--along with the Pertwee years, some of my favorite Who periods.

ABC liked to rip off movies, but not all on your list

    by zeilnhofer

Herc, I'll give you Tales of the Gold Monkey, it was such a rip off of Raiders of the Lost Ark that I kept expecting the Raiders theme to start playing during the episodes I watched. And Happy Days? Maybe, but just for the 50s nostalgia angle. But Battlestar Galactica? Nope. I know that the TBers usually say "it is such a ripoff of Star Wars!" but really other than being in set in space what are the similarities? If anything it is more a ripoff of The Ten Commandments (BG is really based on the exodus myths from the bible more than anything else).
