Wayne Kramer And Harrison Ford Are Planning To Stir The Sh*t With CROSSING OVER!

Published at:  Apr 08, 2007 10:18:51 PM CDT

Hey, everyone. ”Moriarty” here.

When we posted the obit for director Bob Clark last week, the talkback quickly degenerated into a racist cesspool because of the illegal status of the drunk driver who killed Clark and his son. Never mind that their immigration status had nothing to do with the accident... just mentioning the issue seems to bring out the lynch-mob-with-a-shotgun mentality in some people.

So I’m sure there will be a good deal of heated discussion regarding the new project by Wayne (THE COOLER, RUNNING SCARED) Kramer. Do me a personal favor, though, okay? Don’t turn the talkback into another repulsive display. At least pretend you know how to talk about the issue like human beings.

Personally, I’m just amazed he managed to pin Harrison Ford down and get him to star in something so politically charged. This is the guy, after all, who famously squirmed out of both TRAFFIC and SYRIANA. Those films took complicated looks at tricky subject matter, so I wonder what it is that finally got Ford to commit to this one.

There’s not a lot of information out there yet on this project, but check this out:

I found this over at variety and harrisonfordweb.com respectively, notice it hasn’t been posted here yet, I can’t wait to see the message boards reaction to this.

Is It Wrong To Hope This Is More COOLER And Less RUNNING SCARED?

I'm all for this, i think it is a smart move for harrison to try something a little less mainstream, i also read an article about this over at latimes.com about how this thing is nearly devoid of personal politics, but we'll see, i would like to see an unbiased view of immigration if possible.....

    Why? Cuz I said so.
What does this have to do with the movie? About as much as Moriarty's apologism for illegal aliens. He should have tried to make the argument that the fact that dude was drunk had nothing to do with the accident either. "And I don't want to hear any of your bigoted crap about people knocking back a dozen beers and then hitting the road! His drunken status has nothing to do with anything!"

    There ya go. Discuss.

Ford needs to make more (and better) movies

    by osmosis jones

Seriously, he's starred in THREE MOVIES since the beginning of the decade, THREE. This is one of the biggest film starts of the 1980's, and yet most filmgoers under the age of 17 probably have no fucking idea who he is. That's sad as hell. Having Ford eschew his customary $20 million paycheck (why does he need another one? He's richer than God) and take a role in a "small" movie is a good sign.

    "Immigration" = "Illegal Immigration"

    by readingwriter

The Variety article begins by calling it an "immigration" drama, but in fact it's about ILLEGAL immigration, which it mentions in the next paragraph.

This seems minor, but it's like saying a movie is about doing coke vs. saying a movie is about doing Flintstone's chewables.

I wasn't here for the racist talkback, so let me get my digs in... (Just kidding.)

I will say that one's illegal status is very much pertinent to such a discussion; if the person who killed Clark not breaking our laws, he never would have been here to kill Clark. I'm sorry, but this really is pertinent to the discussion.

Drinking while intoxicated is against the law, yet that was freely and properly mentioned in all the articles I've read about it. So why shouldn't his being in the country illegally out of bounds? Because it's not "nice" to say so?

Having said all that, I see no point in getting racist about such things. It's not like all foreigners to America cause crime here; the issue isn't their ethnicity, one's skin color didn't lead them to crash a car into innocent people. The issue is their committing a second crime only because they had to commit a crime to be in that position. Sorry if bringing that up bugs people, but it IS part of the story, and not an unimportant one.

But ethnicity and racist comments have no place in discussing the death of Clark; they simply have nothing to do with it.

Obviously Ford thought that the role of alcoholic PI Matthew Scudder wouldn't appeal to "his customers". Now my faith is restored. This la times piece covers the film quite extensively and gives some insights into Kramer's concept, it may be a bit spoilerish, though: http://www.latimes.com/ entertainment/news/la-et-crossing 9apr09,0,1610028.story?coll=la-home -entertainment I hope for a fulminant return of his wonderful presence. re: Bobovision and Irish molesters

    by sickpuppy

Your comment makes no sense. It's not the same thing at all. Try fixing it like this - make the Irish molester an illegal Irish immigrant first, then take out the part about rallying against illegal Irish immigrants and replace it with just illegal immigrants. Then realize it isn't racist to be against illegal immigrants, as I know Hispanics who are citizens or here legally who don't like illegal immigration, either.

I liken the whole situation to using a gun while robbing a bank. The punishment is jacked up due to the use of a firearm while committing a felony. They are committing crimes to be here, any crimes they commit after that are directly related to the first crime.

    Sorry Mori

    by phimseto

I have to disagree, Mori. There were some very inappropriate things said in the original Bob Clark thread, but it is wrong to say that the guy's immigration status had nothing to do with it. I'm surprised that you would even say it. He shouldn't have been in the country, but his being here was tolerated, even supported, by people who have some pie in the sky idea about illegal immigration or by assholes who enjoy exploiting illegals' to pay them less. There's the basic lack of respect shown by this guy to come into the country illegally, drive illegally and not only that - be drunk by doing so. The amazing thing is that some peoples solution to this isn't to deal with the problem of illegal immigration, but to give them licences. There is a citizenship process in this country for a reason - to teach the basic values, laws, and norms for American society. The idea is that if you respect the country enough to go through the process, you will respect the country when you are a citizen of it. Anyone who comes into this country and plays by the rules deserves a fair shake and deserves everything we can do to make it so. I have friends from other countries that would love to come here and work, but can't because of these quota systems we have for immigration. I have other friends stuck in the process for years, but bearing with it because that's what they have to do. They are all disgusted because they are watching the Federal and state systems bend over backwards to accomodate people who lack the willingness to play by the rules. They are right to be disgusted. Both Bob Clark and Adrienne Shelly died in part because segments of our society and government find it advantageous or ennobling to tolerate illegal immigration. Something like this, Mori, frustrates a lot of people. When someone dies like this, it is not enough to simply mourn but to ask why and keep asking to see where the answers take you. Anyways, I just had to put in my two cents - hopefully in a respectful enough manner. Like I said, people who troll out the racist comments or the "racist" chants, drag down the discussion into an unmanageable state.

    by teamwak

Take any statistical group of people, say illigal immigrants; then some off them will do good things abd some will do bad. To latch onto the illigal immigrant part is ignorant and naive. Could have happened anywhere and anytime. To try and second guess fate through the actions of humans is a recipe for a frustrated life. And to think that your entire country is based on immigration, illegal or otherwise, is amazing. Your Attorney General (dickhead though he may be) is the son of immigrants. Stop beefing about fate and be thankful it wasnt you. When it is you, you wont be worried about the immigration status of the person who has just crasshed into you.

Generally, I am with you. "You cannot legislate stupidity" is one of my favorite sayings, yet politicians the world over seem to want to do just that. And you are right - if he was a tourist - passport in hands, checked in at customs, that would have made a difference. You can't do anything about that. However, the fact that the guy was here illegally, had a previous record, and was still around - that falls under the category of "things the government can and should do something about".

    by jackpumpkinhead

Sheesh. The way this was introduced, I thought it would be about Ford playing an ex-Muslim who becomes a prophet for a new religion in ancient Rome, calls himself Jesus, and then, angered after his political opponents try to crucify him, he goes into a Tibetan monastery... Now that would be, by the standards of today's Hollywood, mildly controversial.

What immigration status has to do with it...

    by roguewarrior65

For those who haven't heard about it, there's a similar case in Virginia Beach where an illegal alien (and don't give me that touchy feely "undocumented worker" P.C.B.S.) who was arrested numerous times for DUI and went out once again DUI and killed two teenage girls. Yet the presiding judge and city mayor did nothing about it. No deportation, no jail time. Let the guy off with a pass because they didn't want to piss off the open-border people. So, ask yourself if an American citizen would have gotten the same treatment. THAT, dear friends, is what immigration status has to do with it.

Now, as for Harrison Ford, generally I like his work but I'd like to see more natural emotions. He's a bit too static. Seems like Lucas was the only director to draw this out in SW:NH. "Get off my plane" doesn't cut it for me.

    by billypilgrim

Cause there was no info given. We know nothing of the movie to make any kind of informed decision. It could be Syriana or it could be a stupid piece of shit. What I would prefer to see is reform in the Mexican government. The estimated population of Mexico in 2006 was 107,449,525. Half of that live in poverty with 5% living in extreme poverty. Many areas have no access to basic sanitation, water or electricity. Unemployment sits around 40% and Mexico has an international debt of approx 191 billion dollars (in 2001). Yet Forbes magazine ranks Mexico 4th in total number of billionaires. Governmental corruption runs rampant. Police can make folks disappear or put in jail under any kind of charges (check Amnesty International). Where gangs regularly kidnap folks for ransom. Where drug cartels possibly run the country more than the "real" government. Perhaps if Mexico improved itself its own population would not have to flee.

And I do think they are different issues. I didn't say one is completely unimportant overall. I just said that he didn't hit and kill Bob Clark because he was an illegal alien. "Oh, man, suddenly I'm having trouble handing the wheel of this car. I'm woozy and my judgment is impaired... because of my immigration status." He hit and killed Bob Clark and his son because he was drunk.

How dare you bad mouth our right as Americans to voice our mistrust and hatred of brown people. Don't you realize that in 1776, when God deemed us the greatest nation ever and rulers of earth, he entrusted us with not only the right but the duty to exploit and degrade darkies? If this weren't true why would he (and c'mon only someone with a cock could be omnipotent)have put so many purists(i refuse to use the degrading term racist)into public office? And furthermore if you did any actual research, you would know that when an immigrant comes to this country through legal means, he is planted with a micro-chip that prevents from making any kind of mistake(REAl americans don't need this de-browning chip because god didn't program us to be able to make mistakes)!! Had he been legal, he would have been physically unable to get behind the wheel while intoxicated. Shit-man read a freakin' history book.

But seriously, what country do you think we live in? This is the same country that has recently made the N-word (no, not Ni! you nerds)acceptable on national television AND as a people we encouraged it by making these racist television shows some of the highest grossing cable shows ever, then rewarded it by starting a second show to provide a forum for using ALL the other degrading racist words that the first guy didn't use.

Don't let these ass-stains bring you down, man. If any of us on these talkbacks had anything worth saying, we'd have our own columns to write!

R.I.P Bob and Ariel Clark, no matter how it happened!!!
