Home Movies!! HBO’s First New SOPRANOS Since Last Spring!!

Published at:  Apr 08, 2007 5:16:35 PM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

Whew! We were all afraid that HBO would send over a screener of the first episode along with a list of spoilers the channel didn’t want us to reveal.

Happily, no screener and no prohibitions arrived in the AICN offices, so you, gentle reader, can find all the rumored reveals for tonight’s episode below, nestled comfortably in the text invisible.

* The first episode starts with a flashback to 2004 as Tony flees the the Feds making their raid on New York boss Johnny Sacrimoni. In the flashback, a kid spots Tony ditching his gun. As Tony continues to flee, the kid retrieves the firearm.

* In the present, the cops arrive at Casa Soprano and haul Tony away to stir, where he must sit next to less successful criminals in his robe and slippers. Turns out the kid from the flashback was just arrested while using Tony’s ditched gun. The kid told the cops about where he got it.

* Tony is quickly out on bail.

* Meadow has dumped Finn and is back living at home, studying to be a pediatrician.

* A.J. is still cohabitating with the hot Dominican with the kid, but she’s evolved into a royal witch.

* No one wants to buy Carmella’s spec house.

* Out on bail, Tony joins Carmella, Janice and Bobby for a trip up to Bobby’s lake house near the Canadian border. En route, Tony learns the charges against him have been dropped.

* While drunkenly playing Monopoly at the lake house, Tony sings “Under The Boardwalk,” adding new lyrics about Janice’s penchant for doling out fellatio in Atlantic City. Bobby starts to beat Tony to a pulp before the girls break it up.

* The next day, Bobby and a bloodied Tony keep an appointment with some Canadians in an effort to arrange to have the lower-priced Canadian pharmaceuticals smuggled into the states.

* One of the Canadians says he can give Tony an even better price on the drugs if Tony can arrange the murder of an ex-boyfriend who’s been harassing his daughter.

* Tony assigns Bobby to make the hit, even though Bobby’s never murdered anyone before, then heads back to Jersey with Carmella.

* Bobby makes the hit, pumping three bullets into some dirtbag in an apartment building laundry room. Now Bobby has to go to Hell when he dies because Tony wanted a better price on a Canadian drug shipment.

After tonight, only eight episodes left.

Next week?

The doctors tell Johnny Sack he has no more than three months to live, Phil Leotardo recovers from a nasty heart attack and quadruple bypass surgery, brother Billy Leotardo is tapped to head the New York family, Christophuh’s “Cleaver” (starring Daniel Baldwin) screens, and Tony learns the feds are now investigating the kid who found Tony’s gun.

9 p.m. Sunday. HBO.

This show is a pisser. A total and utter fucking pisser. I will be glad to be rid of it. Seriously, David Chase, ride your fucking horse off into the sunset, and provide another show with some characters who do not become anachronistic because we have to wait YEARS for you to get around to writing, producing, and directing these episodes. Nice knowing you Tony. Please, have another whacky fucking dream sometime, and maybe keep Bobby from going to hell. That would be super-swell.

    Acting, Writing

    by nudeandaroused

It was the writing and characters. While Vice certainly had the "Video Look." Who would have thought that a TV show could show characters like a Mobster who goes to a therapist? Or the fact that he feels so insecure and guilty that he has attacks like he does? Look at Carmella. Here you have a woman who is so deluded that she feels she is just like a suburban housewife. While, and this most tragic, both parents are so focused on themselves, their son is literally destroying himself for love and attention that he sorely needs. If you take away the killings, and the nude scenes, you still have a great show. The coma season was actually one of the best.

season was one of the best. NO IT WASN'T. It was dull and pointless, and shows laziness on part of the writers that they don't feel they need to come up with anything engaging for us mindless fans who will accept any drivel they pump out. I agree that the show did do a lot for TV.

    by evilwizardglick

Carmella is a soap opera wife. Nothing deep or special about that.
Really the show is like dinner with my ex-Italian relatives. But dumber.
So mob psychotherapy is cutting edge? I don't see it.
First of all these guys are Psychopaths,Sociopaths, no amount of therapy will ever help that. Matter of fact it's one of the weak points that his much more serious mental illness is barely touched on.
Panic attacks, give him some Xanax. Cold blooded murder man that is institutional material.

    Not Soap Opera Wife

    by nudeandaroused

It was cutting edge then. The Sopranos are mobsters thinking they are suburbanites. As to Carmella, I think you are missing her character. She thinks she is a soap opera wife. In fact, she is just as cruel and malignant as her husband. Look how she treats everybody around her. Especially the lack of care and thought for her son. I agree with you, they are psychopaths and the show shows them as psychopaths. They think they aren't. When youget to the bottom of it all, they are all criminals.

Then, Carmella and Janice knowing that their husbands are actually goons. It was great to see how they how they wrestle with that.

    DevilCat, even further back

    by evilwizardglick

television like Dark Shadows and The Monkees changed the paradigm of formulaic tv. Here were shows that proved it was possible to think outside the box and still entrance an audience.
Witchy Poo from H.R.Puffenstuff is still a modern Archetype and is just as popular a motif as The Witch from the Wizard of Oz. All those funky saturday morning live action shows helped bring about a more adult ability in presenting television as nuanced instead of static.
Matter of fact going back to White Heat we see the first glimpse of the criminal with issues theme.
Probably the best illustration of the changed paradigm is the Star Trek episode Errand of Mercy which portrayed the Federation and Klingons as not really that different. Both being somewhat childish, petulant and very warlike.
Sopranos is just an update on everything that went before. Except from the criminals point of view. But we saw that in Blues and Country western music well before the 60's changed television forever.

    by 2utah2

That was horrible. I understand the creators of the Sopranos like the "artisty slow burn" method of writing and developing storylines, but enough is enough. Chase tries to do these symbolic storylines where at this pint we just want something substantial to happen. Yes i know these are the 9 last episodes and some crazy shit will happen, but enough of this wasting time. We know it is a deep show, etc. but for the last 3 seasons shit never goes down. I feel like when things are about to be shaken up in the least bit some random FBI raid happens or an out of nowhere heart attack happens. Show me something. Maybe I'm just used to kick ass BSG storylines...my bad.

    Amazing

    by r james

For us long time fans, last night's episode was incredible. For years, we have been watching gentle Bobby, wandering what the hell he was doing in the violent world of the mob. He just seems too nice. Last night the dam broke, Bobby took out years of pent up agression and it was incredible. (How much of that fight was about Uncle Junior, too?) We knew that Monopoly, drinking, and Janice were a deadly combo and the use of "Take Five"'s unresolved theme to build tension was fantastic. The best use of that Brubeck piece I've ever heard. Last season's finale, with the happy family gathered together, was a tease, a ruse. These people can't live happily together. They're too violent, too f'ed up. They'll destroy themselves and each other. Their attempts at domestic normalcy--family game night--are impossible and fascinating. Last night was the beginning of the end. Tony didn't whack Bobby--sorry haters--but his revenge was so cruel. We also saw the RICO case tightening, Bobby's impending doom--he left far too much evidence--and possibly the beginning of the end for Christofuh. Truly a fantastic hour of television. The hatred is inexplicable. "The Sopranos," behind "The Wire," is TVs finest offering. Sorry your mommies didn't hold you enough haters.

    by rainbowtrout1265

    Amazing? LOL.

You must have very low standards. The Sopranos has become all set-up episodes (some good, some bad) with no payoff. Last night was probably just par for the course. David Chase has become completely predictable. If something actually DID happen, the viewers would be shocked.

    Despite hating this season...

    by _maltheus_

...I liked it. The final season should not be so non-eventful, but other than that, this was a great episode. Bobby was always one of the most interesting characters on this show to me, cause he seemed like the competent one in the shadows. Kind of the "I, Claudius" of the Jersey Mafia. And now they show that Tony is not only on to Christopher's uselessness, but is also realizing Bobby's utility? It's about time.
I still wish they would have done more with Meadow and AJ on this show. Meadow is obviously set up to become the eventual matriarch, ala Livia. And while I get what they're doing with AJ, I think this show deals with themes of inevitability and I'd rather they just follow that out. I suppose it's most likely that Tony will die at the end of the season. They always said, death or jail, and they don't have enough time left for a trial (rico investigation aside). I suppose that could argue for leaving Meadow and AJ out at this point. I hope they ratchet up story a bit. The final season should never be the most non-eventful.

    Sopranos is nerveracking

    by pwnedbystallone

Especially now that the end is nearing. You just never know what's going to push these psychos' buttons. One minute your eating a canoli, the next you're wating your turn while you watch your family get sodomized by a broom. Brilliant show though. Tony's "We don't want to come off like our family's dysfunctional!" line was a classic. It's their total lack of a sense of irony that makes these characters so fucking scary but funny at the same time.

    Mixed bag

    by ninja nerd

While I've had much love for 'The Sopranos' since day one, this one kind of wore me out.

I was married to an Italian "princess" for almost 20 years and I actually lived through too many weekends and dinners like this.

So while I didn't love this one for personal reasons, it's still a great show. I think the one thing I took away was something that was true in my marriage to the 'family'; (and believe me, it's the whole package with these folks!)some people never change even when it's absolutely in their best interest to do so. Tony had an opportunity presented to him and is apparently going to stick to what he is and what he knows.

At this point, I think Tony will end up in jail and be killed by someone from another crew OR someone peripherally related to someone or some thing Tony's done in the past.

I got suckered into watching the last 8 episodes they claim is a "season", and it was anti-climactic. This "Goodfellas: The Series: A Decade Too Late" is and always has been overrated. Fortunately the show after it, Entourage, rocks. Johnny Drama could kick Tony Soprano's ass.

Seems to me people should stop expecting this show to be exactly what they expect. It won't happen. Personally, I think showing Bobby turn to murder was their way of making sure they no one is left pure in any way. Not one of these guys escapes. As someone said before, Tony's own ego and spite have assured Bobby's going to Hell with the rest of them. I don't plan on watching two episodes and deciding I know that it will peter out and be a crappy ending. Personally, I loved Carm's "Is this it?" That line says so much: she knows what her husband does for a living despite her self-denial, and is even expecting it to all come to an end. Just watch it folks. "You Sopranos go too far." I wonder if Bobby's rather inept hit will turn out to leave to much evidence behind and be what leads to everyone's downfall. Y'know, Tony's own personal flaw destroys everything?

I thought no-one else had noticed how much evidence Bobby had left behind - especially poetic after his talk of DNA evidence nowadays. I really liked this episode, Tony's revenge on Bobby was much worse than anything he could have done to him physically. Now it looks like prison and Hell for him, even though he was set as the mobster who could have a perfectly normal and happy homelife. Lots of foreboding - is the Christopher stuff jealousy over the real estate woman? or is Tony fuming about Cleaver? I don't think he knows about Christopher being back on drugs or he would have gone for him already. Carm's "Is this it?" line was perfect and so subtle, as was her line about AJ's behaviour and it being a phase that's coming to an end. Yup, AJ's arc is almost at its inevitable conclusion, as is everyone's. Rico case? Probably a bluff, I don't think it will egt to that but I think it will get strong enough as to make Tony panic and behave irrationally. Perhaps he starts to insulate and protect himself so much that he puts the rest of the crew in the way of the law, causing rifts and anger. And the dialgoue was great this episode. Janice trying to discuss Richie, the whole Monopoly game (especially Bobby's defence of the Parker brothers), Carm's line about Tony doing his sitting in the chair thing. And was that a duck that flew past Tony? Heh. Next week's unvailing of Cleaver should be awesome. Considering how low my other favourite show (24) has sunk this year it's good to see The Sopranos stretching up for a good run.

    by _maltheus_

It seemed like this deal with the Canadians was brought by Bobby. Even if he didn't punch Tony, was Tony himself suppose to do the hit? Why shouldn't Bobby be the one to do it?
Also, what evidence did Bobby leave behind? He did touch the kid at one point, but he was wearing latex gloves. I doubt Tony is going to be brought down by the law at this point regardless of what evidence was left behind. A big trial like that could take a couple years. There simply isn't enough time left. And that's fine by me, cause wrapping the show up in a courtroom would be a waste of story.

I don't know who else could've done the hit, but I believe the point of the show was that Tony derived some pleasure in making Bobby "pop his cherry in that regard". And as for evidence, didn't the guy tear a big piece of Bobby's shirt off?

    Tony saw an opportunity...

    by bigus dickus

...and he exploited it. The hit wasn't part of the original deal with the Canadians. But he shrewdly realized he could force that on Bobby as payback for the fight AND get a better deal on the bootleg drugs at the same time.

    That's right

    by _maltheus_

I guess it wasn't part of the original deal. As for a piece of his shirt being ripped off, I must have missed that. I'll have to rewatch. Still, even if Tony was acting primarily out of spite, you can't groom someone who's never wacked anyone to take over your place.
I wonder if Tony is back to Christopher after that punch. Tony may not know for certain that Christopher is using again, but he does know that something weird is up with him. He was thrown off the trail by Christopher admitting he was fuckin' Tony's ex, but that won't last. It's like when he knew Pussy was an informant. He knew before he knew. And I think that's where his real mistrust is coming from. Silvio can't handle command, that really only leaves Bobby.

NEW YORK—The writers of the HBO series The Sopranos took another daring storytelling step by killing off 10 million fans during the seventh season's premiere episode Sunday night.

'This was definitely a bold choice, one that producers of the show would have never thought of making five years ago,' said New York Times television critic Virginia Heffernan, who noted that the move was hinted at in a season-five episode in which Tony dreamt he was riding a horse through his house. 'But now that I look back, this was strongly foreshadowed throughout all of last season.'

Industry insiders predicted that the show's producers would try to bring at least some fans back for the series finale, which may come as early as May."

... though I admire the ambition, I have to say this show just feels really old and tired in a way that makes me think it's just become a reflection of Chase's own fear of obsolecence.

    Evidence

    by r james

Ripped shirt, spent casings in the washing machine and corpse, and, most importantly, Bobby dropped the gun he used only a few feet from the crime. He was in way over his head. Could come back to bite Tony in the rear.

The Onio piece would be more pointed if Chase actually fell into the "24" trap of trying to outclimax himself with every episode. But he hasn't. If anything he's pulled back and slowed down. And then people complain of no payoff.

Does "ripped shirt" mean a piece was left behind? If so, that's the only evidence he'd have to worry about. Any casings, were left on the ground, that was the lead from the bullet in the washing machine. Of course he left the gun behind, he was wearing latex gloves, that's standard operating procedure. And I'll assume he loaded the gun with those gloves on as well, so the casings ain't an issue. He was stupid to walk right up to the guy when he could have popped him from ten feet away. But none of it should be an issue, Bobby is not the type to turn rat. If he gets pinched, it won't be enough to bring Tony down. Tony will either be fine at the end of the show or he'll be dead. Jail is not in his future.

You may be right Maltheus--my knowledge of hits comes from TV shows and movies--but I think the gun usually gets dumped in the sewer, river, etc. A place where no one is likely to look for it or easily trace it back to the crime committed. How did the episode begin? With a gun Tony had carelessly dropped being traced back to him. I think this incident reveals the seriousness of Bobby's carelessness.

Well, my knowledge is only from TV as well. I usually see them drop the gun right after the hit (unless they legally own it). I've always presumed this was to sever your ties to the murder weapon as soon as possible. There's no way to prove it's yours one it leaves your hand. And if the cops suspect you, you make it harder for them to get a warrant to search your house, when the murder weapon is already in their possession. It leaves them with a dead end. Perhaps a cop is outside an heard the shots and is stopping everyone in the street. Even if the cop was standing right outside when Bobby walked out, he'd have no real evidence connecting Bobby to the murder without the gun in his possession. However, a piece of shirt with some chest hairs on it is a different story.

    We'll see

You make some good points. Should be interesting to see how it plays out. I think we can both agree that the show is still great and that the haters are full of it.

How many times have we seen Tony's 'O' face now?

    by therealratigan

But we still don't know if Carm spits or swallows.

    Carm definately spits

    by itchy

Too many calories, and she works pretty hard at keeping herself in shape. She leaves the swallowing up to Tony's mistresses.

More pressing, however, is whether Johnny Cakes spat or swallowed.

    Carm's Symptoms

    by roboticodiablo

Anyone else notice Carm's symptoms-- she kept mentioning pain in shoulder and looked like she had numbness in her hands at one point. I think she may be cruising for a coronary!

    Prediction

    by mentok

Someone above mentioned that these guys are all psychopaths and sociopaths, and I have to say I agree with that. But I also think that there is one character on the show now who is clearly more messed up than the others, and that's Janice. She's been grooming Bobby to become Tony's number 1 guy for a while. Once that's achieved, and it seems to be about done now, then only one thing stops Bobby becoming the head of the family, Tony. I see Janice killing Tony by the end of the season.
