It's HAPPENING for Mark Wahlberg!!

Published at:  Mar 31, 2007 2:31:27 AM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here, newly awoken from my no sleep early morning drive back to Austin from Louisiana. I'll be finishing up my final set report from THE MIST, but I must first update the site.

I'm going to start with a few trade stories that hit yesterday, but didn't make it up on the site. First is the little tidbit that Mark Wahlberg has signed on to star in M. Night Shyamalan's THE HAPPENING, the apocalyptic flick about a man fleeing from a "cataclysmic natural crises" with his family. Wahlberg rocks, Shyamalan can rock. This could be good, no?

    by athanatos

Top billing in the acting category?
It's only a matter of time before M Night puts himself up there as the star.
From what I've heard of the script I don't think anyone can save this crapfest.

Everything he's done has been some level of greatness. And, to be honest, the least great, the least ballsy, the least ambitious has been The Sixth Sense. Yes, I mean compared to everything else, except maybe that early movie with Rosie and Robert Loggia.

    by shapeshiftinlizard

M night, acting wise, please, this is the first step to gettin some respect back. Unbreakable is one of my fav movies of all time, would chop offa pinkie(right hand)if i could see a sequel to that right now, but this movie sounds like it could be great, lookin forward to it. If ya gotta be in it Mnight, keep it a little bit part like in Unbreak, eh? Even when its bit parts tho I find it disconcertin when the 'auteur' shows up, i dont care if he's hidden under hairballs and acting as AlHitchcock's dog, you get taken out of the reality of the film.

As long as Shymalan has nothing at all to do with

    by creasybear

the script, and some powerful people are around to prevent him from doing his self-aggrandizing schtick, then yes, it has a chance. I'm just worried that if he could still drink enough of the proverbial Kool-Aid to defend Lady in the Water, then he is lost as a filmmaker.

    by misnomer

sixth sense- well it was deservedly HUGE....unbreakable went over peoples heads. village was marketed as a horror to it's detriment. imo, *I havent seen lady in the water* theres only one movie of his that misses the mark, and that is signs. Now that movie stunk- mainly due to the whole water thing....not very smart on the part of the aliens to come to such a watery planet. I know defenders will be like "but that's m night exploring/commenting on the seeminglg coincidental and subtle nuances, nay the beautiful absurdity or mortal existence"...but theyd be wrong. If a being is smart enough to havecreated interstellar travel, its going to know not to go near water. PLUS its incredibly unlikely a lifeform would not depend on water and still appear to look like a carbon-based lifeform.

    War of the Worlds Duece

    by mad-maximus

This movie has a feel of Spielberg's/Cruise's War of the World movie and instead of a family surviving aliens it will be the planet earth. Personally I still do not think Walberg can carry a pic by himself. They better surround him with an experienced cast.

Wahlberg has done some SHITTY acting

    by durendal

He was a major character in The Truth About Charlie, and he sucked something horrible. Then again, so did the rest of that godawful film. He was pretty bad in Planet of the Apes, too. I guess the guy just needs a good director, and if Shyamalan can do one thing right, it's getting good performances out of his actors, so let's hope that Wahlberg actually does a good job this time.

Raj, Re-run, and Dwayne are haunted by the ghost of Shirley Hemphill. Now that movie would be truly frightening.

    by nathan0774

Love M. Night movies... All of them have been interesting to some degree. Sixth Sense of course being the best. But I liked Signs and Unbreakable just fine, thank you very much!! I even liked The Village. Cool movies.

    Shyama-lama-ding- dong

    by jimmy rabbitte

He was on an "every other movie" schedule... "Sixth Sense" was great, "Unbreakable" stunk like @$$, "Signs" was a good solid movie with some genuinely suspensful moments... then "The Village" made him look like an idiot; and he followed that up with "Lady in the Water"... which (sorry I *have* to say it...) was all wet...

With that recent track record, I'm having a hard time getting worked up over the idea he's making another film... But, hey, anybody can a comeback, I guess.

    Mark Wahlberg does rock!

    by viola123

I hope it's good. I felt bad for M. Night with "Lady in the Water", so hopefully this will be his return. And with Mark signed, it's a wonderful start!

    Shyamalan really needs to...

    by bruno diaz

COLLABORATE with other people. He's a really talented guy, for sure. But his movies wreak of someone who needs an editor and an accomplice to flesh/cut out the areas where he's weak. I can't stand directors who so often insist on writing everything they direct. Spike Lee and Robert Rodriguez come to mind as shooters who relatively recently figured out they can sometimes just direct stuff. Shyamalan should do it as well. From what I read from that book about him, however, and the rumors I've heard, his ego is so out of control that that might not happen. Too bad. Everyone he probably idolizes (Spielberg, Hitchcock, Ridley Scott, etc.) is a master collaborator. It's the secret of long term success in Hollywood. Get someone to co-write the script, M Night. You're not a genius.

    RE: Xiphos and NYC

    by neo zeed

Thank you Xiphos. Hey, NYC you can check the imdb for Shirley's death. I think Re-run died too. Hmmmm...maybe a "What's Happening!!" movie is "TOO SOON" or some lame catchprase like that. Instead, Dee would cleverly retort, "Ooooo, I'm telling mama."
