Pullo Pull Out!! Tonight Brings HBO’s Last ROME Ever!!

Published at:  Mar 26, 2007 3:21:29 PM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

HBO slaps together an improbable number of great hours, but I rank “Rome” ahead of “The Sopranos,” “Oz,” “Deadwood,” “Carnivale,” “Band of Brothers” and “Six Feet Under.”

Mark Antony lies, steals, philanders, urinates on the houseplants, smears on mascara and fires deadly arrows into his innocent slaves for sport, yet one has to adore the way he balances his core recklessness with that canny knack for survival. Certainly the role will do wonders for the career of James Purefoy, who proves far too talented to be relegated to the ghetto of British television.

All of my favorite “Rome” characters are possessed of horrifying attributes. The start of this season saw Lucius Vorenus abandon his helpless young offspring to slavery, sodomy, rape and who knows what else. Good-natured Titus Pullo demonstrates a useful faculty for violence, but his temper too often precipitates tragic outcomes in his personal life. Super-brainiac Octavian bones up when he slaps around his sexual conquests, but you can’t help but love him explaining to his fiancée that she mustn’t take it personally.

HBO says:

Series finale. In the aftermath of the battle of Actium, Mark Antony returns to Alexandria, settling into a world of numbing debauchery with Cleopatra. Meanwhile, Octavian turns to Pullo to try to convince Vorenus to give up Cleopatra's palace in lieu of a fiery siege. Predictably, Vorenus refuses, but Cleopatra seems all too willing to dupe Mark Antony in order to save her life, if not her honor. With Octavian's army at the palace steps, Vorenus flees with Caesarion, Cleopatra's imperious son and Caesar's supposed heir, whom Octavian wants dead. As Vorenus exits the city with the boy, Pullo is ordered by Octavian to track them down. Their journeys lead Vorenus and Pullo back to Rome for an emotional reunion at the Collegium--just as Octavian's triumph is being held amidst bittersweet pomp and circumstance.

SPOILER!! Here’s what history tells us. Antony declaring Caesarion (actually son of Titus Pullo, if we’re to believe the TV show) the legitimate heir to Caesar is apparently what swang Rome to support Octavian over Antony.

Antony divorced Octavia. Dispatched by Octavian, Marcus Agrippa invaded Egpyt and things went downhill from there for Antony, Cleopatra and Caesarion.

For the city, Octavian ushered in an era of peace and prosperity that would endure more than two centuries.

Agrippa married Octavian’s daughter, fathered five children by her, and died.

Tiberius, Octavian’s stepson, married Octavian’s daughter (Agrippa’s widow) and succeeded Octavian as emperor in 14 A.D., about the time Jesus was getting his pubes.

Tiberius’ successor was Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus Germanicus a.k.a. Caligula. Malcolm McDowell played him in a dirty 1979 movie written by Gore Vidal and co-financed by Penthouse.

Caligula’s successor was Tiberius Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus, subject of the 1934 novel and 1976 miniseries “I, Claudius.”

Claudius was succeeded by Nero Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus, the guy who supposedly “fiddled while Rome burned.”

Nero committed suicide in 68 A.D. Then you have to skip over a dozen or so more emperors before you hit Marcus Aurelius (121-180) and Commodus (161-192), who were major players in both 1964’s “The Fall of the Roman Empire” and 2000’s “Gladiator.” Alec Guinness and Richard Harris played Aurelius, Christopher Plummer and Joaquin Phoenix played Commodus.

Of course the coolest thing is the Romans believed in hundreds of wacky deities – with names like Carmenta, Pluto, Pomona, and Vagitanus - and believed Timon and the other Jews’ single God to be a silly myth. Of course the exact opposite turned out to be true! Stupid ancient Romans!

9 p.m. Sunday. HBO.

ROME, THE WIRE, OZ, and Carnivale might just be the four best shows period but you'd never know it from their viewership. And you can forgot about awards season. Awards only go to average shows like Desperate Housewives, Lost, Heroes, and Two and a Half Men.

    by teamwak

This show has been a revelation, and I will seriously miss it. It has had so many scenes that were truely amazing. So as a tribute I will try to mention some of the best scenes in the show -THIRTEENTH!!! Surely the greatest scene of the show. Have Pullo and Vorenus ever been harder or more noble - The rape of Servilla. Boy she got some justice from Atia - The death of Servilla. "Now thats what I call an exit!" - Young Octavian going into politics and Mark Anthony beating him "3 Million Sistersii?!!" The high comedy of Pullo fucking Cleopatra. I loved Vorenus trying to go to sleep when it was going on - poor Brutus death/suicide. Did old equivelent of death by cop. Took his armour off and charge a legion on his own. - Atai and Mark Anthony. "Do wake me up before you come in me" - Older Octavian. "I may beat you with my hand, or a small whip. But do not be worried, it is not you. It is how I achieve sexual release" - Posca and his new wife The Collegium and the Aventine. The original ganstgers. The Newsreader The bitch Gaia and her death by Pullo Pullo takes on the Aventine!!! And everything Mark Anthony does. James Purefoy is THE MAN. He even makes wearing mascara seem cool, hard, and dangerous Thank You ROME. I have enjoyed you more than I ever thought I would. Salve, Ave, and THIRTEENTH!!!!!

what wank. Brits are fond of deluding themselves that they have the best tv in the world, while in reality they watch more shit tv than anyone. yeah, the US produces a lot of shit shows but it also produces far more excellent television than the UK: Lost, BSG, Sopranos, 24, Heroes, House, Veronica Mars, South Park, not to mention such recent dearly departed shows as the OC or the West Wing. there's nothing remotely comparable on UK tv: the best UK shows (fawlty towers, blackadder, the office, extras) are short-lived affairs: they burn brightly for a handful of episodes and then they're gone. except that they then get repeated for the next 25 years while waiting for the next classic to appear. everything else is amateurish drivel.

    by movieman742

They bring us unbelievable shows then cancel them before thier time is up. Between Rome, Deadwood, and Carnivale HBO had supreme hits. But instead of keeping the great ones and cancelling the rest they keep the rest and cancell the great ones.

Teamwak, you forgot one of the best moments in season 2. When Antony was forced to leave the city he went to see Atia. The centurian at the doorway wouldn't let him pass and Antony goes "You don't want me to get violent, CENTURIAN." Fucking loved that scene.

    by spyguy

ROME actually got stronger in its second season, probably because the production staff knew the series was ending. BSG, meanwhile, has given us the Black Market, Apollo & Starbuck declaring their love for one another in a boxing ring in front of their respective spouses, and Chief Tyrol going all Norma Rae with a union labor strike.

ROME isn't "as good as BSG"...it's BETTER. THIRTEENTH!!!

    by tritium

TV shows...but AS A WHOLE, I do not think that British TV in any way or in any shape compares to American TV. Yes, there are classic British shows that will rank up there along side American shows. Hell, I grew up with Monty Python being replayed on PBS when I was a kid, and my humor and sensibilities are in fact very British (even though I am a New England Yank, through and through)

However, British TV has punctuated singularities of Brilliance. Even genre defining Brilliance. But us Americans need not feel at all inferior to our British brothers when it comes to great Television.

Everyone was at the top of their game for this episode, especially Purefoy; that wail of anguish he gave when he learned of Cleo's "death" was primal! Titus Pullo ...one of the great characters...

    by bones

Think about his arc: He starts out as a slave-born soldier--but he is really just an entertaining, drunken thug. His stupidity and temper set off the whole chain of events that the series covers. His friendship with Vorenus transforms him in every possible way -- leading him through joy and loss, pain, suffering and redemption. After hitting his lowest point before his arrest, he becomes redeemed in the Arena by his great heart, and the heart of his friend--he builds back his relationship with Erynni and his temper is tempered by his responsibilities. With the death of his wife and Vorenus in Egypt, he rises again to become the gang leader and father that Vorenus could not be, and is respected by even Octavian as an honest trustworthy man.
He is the classic, simple man moved forward by fate. There is a reason the show shows the skull, balancing so precariously in the opening titles--the effects of chance and fate are everywhere. And even though sorrow follows joy, he always keeps soldiering on, and in the end is rewarded with the love or respect of almost everyone. He goes with the flow, but without trying to stay the same--he lets life change him and is rewarded--and the show ends with him on top. Frikkin' sweet.
Another point--If you think about the structure of the show, it neatly divides in half thematically: the first season is about life above ground -- focusing on the senate and the second is about life below--the gangs, the Collegium, the slaves, the brothels and back alley trysts--the secret societies that support the first season. In two seasons, it shows you as much of Roman life as it can. Granted, the second season is two seasons combined into one--the second season should have been about wrapping up the Brutus/Servillia story and the third all about Rome and Egypt, but because of the shortened time frame, this season was more impressionistic, hopping through time from one truly great incident to the next. The joy of this season was the surprise from those shifts, watching the characters transform before our eyes.
I will miss this show, but will watch it a lot on DVD, and get lost in it every time--like Band of Brothers.

    VORENUS LIVES!!!

    by datachasm

i thought it was a great episode overall, perhaps it did drag a bit in Egypt... but everyone played their part well. it was so awesome to see Vorenus and Pullo in one last adventure together like the early moments of the show. it is terribly sad that there will be no more... but in a way its perfect that it ends before it falters. Atia really shined in the final moments... i understand her, the thrill is all in the chase and when the chase is over the boredom will set in. it was chilling to see Antony's and Cleopatra's corpses be carted in a parade like mannequins. gonna miss it~

Best last line ever! Listen. About your father.

    by crichtonastronut

Beautiful. Great last scene between Titus and Pullo. Reminded me of that last scene with Gus and Woodrow in Lonesome Dove. And the kids finally give the guy a break.

Loved their last adventure. "We're cooked as soon as his Majesty starts talking, we're cooked." That kid was terrifically arrogant, reminds me of Octavian in episode 1 season 1.

Cleopatra was great. Don't know who that actress is but when the scenes called for t she played a surprisingly sympathetic performance, even after the trick she pulled on Antony. Great scene between her and Octavian.

James Purfoy was equally brilliant as the beaten Marc Antony.

And Vorenus and Pullo as the silent witnesses to the whole mess. Brilliant.

Atia is extraordinary in her last scenes. And Livia does suitibly bitchy "I'm the wickedest witch of all." But Atia remains unimpressed. With a dismissive, "you couldn't hold Servilla's toga." and "See me when you're the evil queen bitch from I, Claudius. Right now you aint got the chops."

And again, gotta give it up for the last line.

    "About your father." great delivery.

    by chorleyfm

Pullo is one of the best TV characters ever, but I still hold The Sopranos and Band of Brothers as superior HBO shows. About the whole British TV vs. US TV thing, British TV was better, but there has been renaissance of American TV in the last decade (largely fueled by HBO) that has raised the bar and you Yanks have probably edged ahead. That said, I still prefer our mix of TV, with news, drama, comedy, reality and documentary all over the listings, rather than the American scheduling blocks. We do mainstream TV better than you though (eg Waking the Dead is a much better forensic drama than CSI).

Just wanted to say thanks to BBC and HBO for giving us 2 seasons of one of my favorite shows. It was the best way to tell this story and to add the characters of Vorenus and Pullo was a great touch that made it even better. Pullo will go down as one of the best characters in a show ever. Thanks, I'm glad you could go out with dignity.

Your Jesus is no more real than Hercules (the original, of course; not our own beloved Herc), Sol Invictus, Mithras, Attis, or Osiris (all of whom were Classical deities who predated and share an amazing number of characteristics with Jesus).

What's really interesting is that such assertions make you so defensive. Is your faith so weak that the mere fact that someone doesn't agree with you threaten your entire belief system? If so, it's time to find a belief system based in fact, and not in myth.

As for Rome, vale indeed. Outstanding series. Although shame on you, Herc, for not including "Quo Vadis?" in your recitation of Roman history through cinema.

    by santiagoatez

The last fight in Egypt where Vorenus gets mortally wounded seemed very cheap compared to other fights in the show. If Vorenus had to die, I wish it could have been a better fight. Maybe if was wounded in the beginning of the episode it would have made a more dramatic end for him....as it just seemed a bit rushed happening in the last 15 minutes. The only things I really liked from the ep were the scenes of Antony and a great performance from Atia, as well.

Lost, BSG, Heroes all you jagoffs invested in story arcs that'll never play out. REAL stories, like Rome, have beginnings, middles and ends. If the characters are such that you can start another story around them, great. Plan a series to run X seasons, and run the plot accordingly then write another fucking show--don't extend a series until you distort everything so out of proportion it becomes self parody (i.e., MASH) This is how it's done. thirteenth.

Brilliant Ending to a Brilliant Show

    by movieman742

Absolutely loved Antony's scenes. Looking back on both seasons you have to say he was the most interesting characters. I was dreading the finale because it would be the last time there would be a new episode. I recorded it Sunday night and was afraid to watch it, I wanted to save it. Yeah, that lasted about 3 hours. Once I got home from work I watched it.

Before watching the episode I was angry at HBO for cancelling it. After watching the finale, it wrapped up every story line so nicely that I was glad it was the final episode. The first half in Egypt was heartbreaking to see. Both finales of each season were the top 2 episodes of the entire season.

Just started watching Rome at the middle of this season. Extremely impressed with the acting and obviusily the re-ceation of the time period is astounding. Everyone of those actors on the show should be getting film deals and TV deals immediately. I just loved how it tried to capture how everyday life would be in Rome for the different social classes. I am going to Netflix the first season ASAP.

    I like jokes about religion

    by filmrage

It's not that it was a joke about Christianity or Jesus, i like religious humour. One of my favorite movies is 'The life of Brian' and I love all the scenes with Jusus in South Park. I objected because there was a nastyness to that comment. it wasn't really even a joke, it was more of a plain old derogetory comment. Just a belittling observation for the pure sake of belittlement. That, is what i took offence to. . . . . . . . . . Oh, and let's be honest. As much as we all like BSG, it's gotten bloated and fluffed out with navel gazing scenes. The excitement and battles with the Cylongs are few and far between now. It should be re named 'Prattle Star Galactica'. Come on, be honest, the only reason we loved the gritty and audience repsecting hard core drama scenes is because they served the action and made that even more exciting. When it just comes down to whining scene after whining scene with a bit of space ship footage every third episode then it just becomes a chore to watch. If it doesn't pick up in the next season it's gonna be in Babylon 5 territory.

    Human Enhancement

    by filmrage

Oh boy, what did you just get out of philosophy 101 mate? You are gonna have to do better than that. First of all, i wasn't interested in a discussion on the validity of someones faith. i was talking about just mere attitudes to things that each other find important. Even if I met a Scientologist i would, if at all, challenge him on the logic of his ideas and not just make derogetory comments about things that are important to him. People who dissagree are valuable to each other. It's great to have your ideas and faith and belief challenged. There is however no value in just being derogetory and trying to insult peoples ideas for the sake of the enjoyment it gives you to do so. You can respect soemones ideas while strongly disagreeing with them. There are good and bad ways to express yourself when you don't like the faith, culture and ideas of another person. And as for you, although there are no photos to prove Jesus existed there is however quite a lot of evidence that although not definitive proof then at least a strong indication that he existed. There is though, not one single shred of evidence to back up your assertion that he did not exist. You so argument so clearly is lacking in logic and proof. You are guilty of the very thing you claim about Christians. You dislike the idea of Christianity and you allow this 'emotion' to bend your mind and logic to fit what you want to be true. If you were truly a person of logic then you would say "there is no definitive proof either way to show that Jesus existed or not" but that's not what you stated is it? You stated what absolutly can't be proven as if it was a proven fact. You condem yourself with your own words and deeds. You are the forum version of that pony tail guy in the movie 'Good will hunting' who tries to dazzle Mat Damon in the bar scene. Debate 101 skills don't cut it with real thinkers dude. Come back after you have learned to think rather than recite and i'll be happy to entertain any real challenges, the stronger the better as far as i am concerned.

They did leave the door open for a third season

    by _maltheus_

But I know it'll never be made. Great fucking show though. Really, I'm normally one of those guys who comes here to bitch about shows, so I'm at a loss now, cause there was nothing to bitch about in Rome. And now I can finally cancel HBO once and for all. I'll put Rome, Carnivale and Deadwood as tied for best HBO show. Followed by the Sopranos, Oz, the Wire (haven't seen S4 yet, but it's really just an over-hyped cop show, not bad I guess), Larry Sanders, Dream On and Six Feet Under. I'm not counting mini-series'.
I laughed real loud when someone asked if it was nearly as good as BSG. I know it's a hated, overused expression and I've never used it in all seriousness, but BSG is truly the first show to truly jump the shark since the Fonzie days. RDM came up with those finale twists halfway through the season and it pretty much invalidates everything that came before. If it felt like it didn't fit, that's because it was never meant to. Just sloppy. That show needs some zombies or space vampires to make it's fall complete. At least Antony and Cleopatra had to pride to do themselves in. Here's the ranking for this season (of the geeky talkback shows): Rome, Heroes, Dexter, Veronica Mars, Smallville, 24, Lost, BSG. Lost has been picking up though and still has a chance to move up a few notches, but it so squandered the first half of the season that it'll never enter the top three..
James Purfoy was the best actor on Rome I thought. There were more interesting characters, but from the first episode to the last, he felt like a real character. As an "I, Claudius" fan, I gotta say that I loved seeing a young, hot Livia before she's goes on to be queen bitch. I love Attia, but she's Shirley Temple by comparison to Livia. Then again, Octavian went from a cold fish in Rome to a fairly warm and affable guy in "I, Claudius", so perhaps I should grab a decent historical account to help reconcile the two. I'm tired of HBO waiting for it's "Sopranos replacement" when they've had several better shows since they've been looking. They'll never see the subscription phenomenon they once saw in this age of DVD supremacy. Showtime has all the momentum now. Anyone want to start a pool for how quickly they'll fuck that up?

So, Vorenus is really dead, huh?

    by santiagoatez

What's the point in killing him off if it's all going to happen in the last 15 minutes of the series? Anyway, as I said in an earlier post, I love the show but didn't like the finale. And to the above post, I completely agree that James Purfoy was the strongest actor...I actually didn't know his name, but when you mentioned the "best actor on Rome" I was 99% sure you had to be talking about Antony.

I was talkin' bout Antony. They were all good though. And I didn't think they actually killed Vorenus, just that death would likely come. It seems like the producers are hoping letter writers will change HBO's mind? It's never happened before, but eventually HBO management will die off and their replacements might have a little more wisdom.

    Antony, Cleopatra, and Lucius..

    by movieman742

are dead. Even though they didnt show his death doesnt mean he isnt dead, they said over and over the wound was mortal.

And for talk of a third season and possibly more I just would like to say that I am glad how the show ended. Although it was only 2 seasons, it was the best show on tv. Not having Antony on the scene with his swager and dimeaner is a big loss for the show.

After the first season I was praying to HBO for a second season. They produced a second season that was unmatched by almost all other shows on television. If you look at the series as a whole it was about Octavians rise to power. From the first episode of season one where he knew what power plays were going on and explaining them to Vorenus and Pullow to the final scenes of episode 22 where the triumph was being held. I love Rome.

Rome had what most HBO shows never get......an ending. I think we should be grateful for that. I know I am.

Not to get technical here but as the all lived 2000 years ago, the real characters and the fictional ones, they are all dead. It's just a matter of at what point the show pulls away. I personally find Agrippa to be the most interesting person from that history, though he was a bit boring and sam gamgee in this show. Be interesting to track all the characters careers from now. by _maltheus_

...but we're much closer to the beginning of the story, than the end. "I, Claudius" was great but it looks like a Super 8 of a high school stage production (albeit wonderfully acted). It wouldn't be dragging things out to cover all of those wonderful events, what with Caligula and Nero (Clinton and Bush) being topical that is. ;-)

    by obi-bear

...and while it's unfortunate that "this is it", at least it went out on top creatively.
I believe it hasn't been mentioned yet, but the primary reason for this show's demise is it is so expensive.
Too bad, really...I think this group of talent had one more good season in them.
One thing about this finale...it had alot of thematic and symbolic "bookends" with the first episode, giving it an excellent wrap-up...
I know alot of folks really like the dynamic duo of Vorenus & Pullo and yes, Mark Antony had real flair (mainly thnaks to the amazing men who played them), but the anchor of this show was Attia (and the incomparable Polly Walker)...damn this woman is amazing...ale to capture and display all this characters wickedness and guile and at the last moment, truly reveal her tragic side...watch out for what you wish and work for indeed! That exchange of looks at the end between her and Octavius (another triumphant, layered performance) was priceless, especially following that great line (I don't give a FUCK what the priests say!)to his wife...Walker is amazing...I'll be watching that again & again when the dvd arrives....
Speaking of which...if you turned onto this series late...check out the first season on DVD...Ciran Hinds is one of the best Caesers onscreen EVER...

You make the assertion that an individual existed who defies all sorts of historical checks. The accounts of his life are self-contradictory. He supposedly performed supernatural miracles. There is no contemporaneous account of his existence, and yet there are contemporaneous accounts of the existence of cults who worshipped gods who share all his attributes...

A MASTERPIECE! Historically inaccurate, but who gives a shit...absolutely brilliant. Vorenus and Pullo are the best duo on TV ever; McKidd and Stephenson's chemistry made the series. Been a fan of McKidd since I saw "Dog Soldiers" on Sci-Fi a few years ago. The biggest problem I had with Season 2 was the totally pointless Timon and the Jewish Defense League...final goddamn season and HBO wasted precious time with this bullshit storyline. Anyway, Ray Stephenson has the lead in the CBS pilot "Babylon Fields," a drama about the living dead or whatever, I can't wait to hear Pullo with an American accent.
