Holy Crap... This Is A Really Groovy STAR WARS Slice Of Fandom!!

Published at:  Mar 23, 2007 5:21:31 PM CDT

Hey, everyone. ”Moriarty” here.

I don’t know who this guy is, and normally I don’t run stuff like this, but I am so amazed and so entertained by his work that I have to share a link with you guys.

This one showed in my inbox today from “The Yattering,” an old school talkbacker and friend of mine, and it was just a simple link to a guy’s blog. On that blog were... well... they’re almost impossible to describe. I could, but it would ruin all the fun.

Suffice it to say that I would pay to see this version of the films, and I love the way the iconography of STAR WARS is so potent that you can bend it even as far as this guy does, and it still retains something of its essence.

Steampunk + STAR WARS = you click here!!

Trust me... it’s worth ten minutes of your day.

Everyone's used this exact concept. It's what the people who do it think is extremely creative, like no one's ever done -this- before! Except just about everyone has. This 'style' is practically every other animation project when I was in school. Hopefully people will stop running into the ground soon, and find something else to play out.

Dude, seriously... Otomo's Steamboy IS the first Star Wars movie retrofitted into a steampunk setting. There is a vader figure, a death star and a crazy old man helping a young boy discover his powers. I'm familiar with the fact that steampunk is an established genre, but Steamboy did the same thing this guy did, only better.

    What "steampunk" is...

    by immortal_fish

For those of you wondering (and despite the endless, inevitable corrections to come), "steampunk" is anything re-imagined during the steam technology era, ala Jules Verne. For example, the Thief series of games on the PC are "steampunk". If you ever heard the phrase "cyberpunk" used, then you surely catch the drift.

you are SO missing the point...the point is that when he first did it, he got a little attention...and then after a while,it was clear he wouldn't EVEr write anything else, and that was a topic of discussion...then people tried to guess which talkbacker/AICN contributor it was, and that lasted a while...then people sort of began to ignore it...and then the real magic began...HE KEPT FUCKING DOING IT...months and months have gone by, and he has never once missed a talkback, and never typed anything but his signature phrase. it has become a part of AICN. imagine the sheer willpower it takes to keep this up. imagine how many times he's typed it. and never a typo? maybe a script? ant any rate, you've proven, once again, that you can get someone riled up, simply by typing the same random phrase you've typed a hundred times before, or more.he wins. you lose. damn you michael bay, indeed.

    by jdanielp

I... thought... this was going to be something cool, ...perhaps even on the level of that re-edit of Episode One that was much darker in tone (without Jar Jar, etc.) I've long wished I could actually *see* that darker version, as I would BUY such versions of STAR WARS on dvd, if Lucas made such available. (After all, he could use the cash. Right?) Maybe I haven't searched it out enough. But anyway, yeah, THIS steampunk version is BAD on ANOTHER LEVEL of bad. I've yet to backtrack and read what other's have said here, in the talkbacks, ...but I'm disappointed in Moriarty. Maybe I'll just chalk it up as being something that... he sees beauty in... and I do not. I totally disagree on this one.

    by beelkay

Why are there so many cynics on AICN.com? I thought that looked pretty cool. The only steampunk stuff I've seen is "Steamboy," but just because something is derived from something else doesn't mean it isn't interesting and innovative, especially to those who haven't experienced something like it before. How many artists have combined steampunk and Star Wars?

    by jdanielp

I suppose it all comes down to interpretation. But from a design perspective, STAR WARS (prequels included) was done quite well by people at ILM. There's just not much room for improvement. But hey, some people like BOTH Coke and Pepsi. I do. But this just seems a little... RC Cola. Know what I mean?

It's not trying to be a better or even incredibly innovative thing, just someone who wanted to try something he loved in a different style. I like it. It's not going to inspire George Lucas to issue a Steampunk version of the originals (we hope), but it's still got merit.

steampunk is basically when you convert steam into a waveform signal which can play one of three classic punk tunes which are 1.) Holiday In Cambodia 2.) I Want To Conquer The World and 3.)Mmm Bop.... its basically like optical audio, except instead of a fiber optic cable, it uses steam. quite simple actually. They're to make it compatible with iTunes. It's going to be sweet. you can have boiling hot steam melting your face all while listening to three of the greatest songs ever recorded!!!333

Especially the Han Solo version, not to mention Jabba and Bib Fortuna with the turban. If you want animated steampunk, check out "The Amazing Screw-On Head". People often refer to the material known as "steampunk" as [referencing Jules Verne] "Verne-ish" or "Verne-esque", kinda like how anime used to be referred to as "Japanimation" back in the 80s by many. You can find other traces - aside from obvious ones - of steampunk in scifi genre in stuff like *Max Headroom* or even the 1996 *Doctor Who* tv movie. Actually, check that out for the most in non-Verne material. The TARDIS Console Room is fully steampunk plus gothic.
