Holy Crap... This Is A Really Groovy STAR WARS Slice Of Fandom!!
Hey, everyone. ”Moriarty” here.
I don’t know who this guy is, and normally I don’t run stuff like this, but I am so amazed and so entertained by his work that I have to share a link with you guys.
This one showed in my inbox today from “The Yattering,” an old school talkbacker and friend of mine, and it was just a simple link to a guy’s blog. On that blog were... well... they’re almost impossible to describe. I could, but it would ruin all the fun.
Suffice it to say that I would pay to see this version of the films, and I love the way the iconography of STAR WARS is so potent that you can bend it even as far as this guy does, and it still retains something of its essence.
Steampunk + STAR WARS = you click here!!
Trust me... it’s worth ten minutes of your day.

I guess I expected something... else.
-
mmmmm.....
-
they're okay i guess...
-
I'm a huge SW fan, obviously. If Chewbacca were running around with Han like that, oh man. And Vader looks bad ass.
-
And why is is screwing with my childhood?
-
It was interesting the first time around. It's such a cliche now that there's nothing even remotely interesting about it, and yet people ooh and ahh over some jackball's theiving the idea yet again.
-
Already used this exact concept.
-
i can has that 30 seconds of my life back?
-
This is cool enough I guess... Just.
-
If i don't have the slightest clue what the frak steampunk is?
-
i'd love to see more.
-
what?
-
Everyone's used this exact concept. It's what the people who do it think is extremely creative, like no one's ever done -this- before! Except just about everyone has. This 'style' is practically every other animation project when I was in school. Hopefully people will stop running into the ground soon, and find something else to play out.
-
love the 'reimaging"
-
kind of Star Wars meets Wizard of Oz.
-
I dig this stuff!...Didn't know what Steampunk was either, but the pictures kinda define the term....I've seen stuff like this before...Someone get Dark Horse on the phone....This would make a great graffic novel!
-
Very meh.
-
Dude, seriously... Otomo's Steamboy IS the first Star Wars movie retrofitted into a steampunk setting. There is a vader figure, a death star and a crazy old man helping a young boy discover his powers. I'm familiar with the fact that steampunk is an established genre, but Steamboy did the same thing this guy did, only better.
-
set in the 1870s?
-
before, but the Death Star and Vader look really good.
Han, Chewie and Jabba look pretty crap though. -
I picked the one with Han and Chewie for my desktop. :D
-
Is Steamboy a comic book or an animation? I wanna check it out...If it's anything like you describe
-
I meant Playahatersball
-
seriously... fascinating stuff, in a very good way.
-
made a few years ago. There is the film and a manga that was made recently as well. You can can find both on Amazon.
-
Damn you Michael Bay
-
Thanks for the info...I'm gonna check it out
-
My friend's dealio is pretty awesome: http://www.episode0.com/
-
From the site: "They're all at 1280x960, so you should be able to use them at almost any resolution without stretching." uhhh how about those in the future "nowadays" that have monitors bigger than 15" like say something in the 1600 pixel range?
-
Thanks for the link, man!
-
I want to see some steampunk ewoks.
-
For those of you wondering (and despite the endless, inevitable corrections to come), "steampunk" is anything re-imagined during the steam technology era, ala Jules Verne. For example, the Thief series of games on the PC are "steampunk". If you ever heard the phrase "cyberpunk" used, then you surely catch the drift.
-
i prefer the original versions. This just seems so forced. Kinda reminded me of the graphics in the old bitmap brothers Amiga/MegaDrive videogame Soldiers of Fortune aka Chaos Engine. If you liked these images you'll probably enjoy those retro 16bit graphics too.
-
that would be some dramatic stuff to put in a comic or the tv show.
-
That is all.
-
I don't remember how this started...only that it has gone on for too long.

you are SO missing the point...the point is that when he first did it, he got a little attention...and then after a while,it was clear he wouldn't EVEr write anything else, and that was a topic of discussion...then people tried to guess which talkbacker/AICN contributor it was, and that lasted a while...then people sort of began to ignore it...and then the real magic began...HE KEPT FUCKING DOING IT...months and months have gone by, and he has never once missed a talkback, and never typed anything but his signature phrase. it has become a part of AICN. imagine the sheer willpower it takes to keep this up. imagine how many times he's typed it. and never a typo? maybe a script? ant any rate, you've proven, once again, that you can get someone riled up, simply by typing the same random phrase you've typed a hundred times before, or more.he wins. you lose. damn you michael bay, indeed.
-
Yeah, someone told me yesterday...I guess MCMLXXVI (cryptic, isn't it) is a big deal around here....He secretly owns the site or something
-
Really though...This guy is annoying!!! And drives me crazy!!
-
He comes in and does the Michael Bay thing and it could end there. But no, you people have to make 20 posts about it.
-
It's less annoying to read his post and ignore it than it is to make a separate post about how annoying it is. Here, hit this and watch Steamboy ;) I like Vader. The rest is a bit much. Why is Chewie a mog now? I'm confused. Intriguing, but make Chewie a wookie, not a dogmanthing. Mandogthing. Whatever. Would he bark or...? Nevermind.
-
"The WIz"
-
WT fuck? no.
-
for three or four drawings?
-
Steampunk? More like steaming pile of shit. LEAVE MY STAR WARS ALONE!
-
right up the planety arse. Horrible way to go. In all honestly that's some pretty cool stuff. Just where's the steampunk Boba Fett?
-
Fuck you MCMLXXVI
-
I... thought... this was going to be something cool, ...perhaps even on the level of that re-edit of Episode One that was much darker in tone (without Jar Jar, etc.) I've long wished I could actually *see* that darker version, as I would BUY such versions of STAR WARS on dvd, if Lucas made such available. (After all, he could use the cash. Right?) Maybe I haven't searched it out enough. But anyway, yeah, THIS steampunk version is BAD on ANOTHER LEVEL of bad. I've yet to backtrack and read what other's have said here, in the talkbacks, ...but I'm disappointed in Moriarty. Maybe I'll just chalk it up as being something that... he sees beauty in... and I do not. I totally disagree on this one.
-
I've got a boner for Steampunk and this is truly great work. I'd love to see a comic or an animated film with this stuff.
For those who saw League of Gentlemen then that's what steampunk is. -
...would be considered a disasterous example of steampunk gone wrong, I take it?
-
the pencil fantasy drawings i did in high school were pretty good too but they were original and not some fanfiction mashup of two things i happen to like. like, there is a reason i didn't draw pictures of the cast of chrono trigger encountering dream of the endless while travelling through space on something i call Her Majesty's Velocicycle Entrepreisse....... and if i had i would have been damn sure they never wound up on a nationally trafficked internet site
-
Why are there so many cynics on AICN.com? I thought that looked pretty cool. The only steampunk stuff I've seen is "Steamboy," but just because something is derived from something else doesn't mean it isn't interesting and innovative, especially to those who haven't experienced something like it before. How many artists have combined steampunk and Star Wars?
-
I suppose it all comes down to interpretation. But from a design perspective, STAR WARS (prequels included) was done quite well by people at ILM. There's just not much room for improvement. But hey, some people like BOTH Coke and Pepsi. I do. But this just seems a little... RC Cola. Know what I mean?
-
Hey, lay off ppl using outdated subject lines: BTW: George Lucas Raped my Childhood.
-
and the jaunty neckerchief thing.
-
"Last Exile" is a much better steampunk series than "Steamboy", but Steamboy is more popular because it's a movie that was released in theaters, not a series. And the CGI in LE is kinda bad. But they don't use it TOO much. Heh. Jaunty.
-
Can steam power operate in Space??? And we need more Steamboy!!! They oughta make a TV series if not another film...
-
Mikey Bay is laughing with glee.
-
together=ok,nothing special.
-
I kinda like these. It's well-drawn, it's interesting, I'd say it's even beautiful. It's not trying to be a better or even incredibly innovative thing, just someone who wanted to try something he loved in a different style. I like it. It's not going to inspire George Lucas to issue a Steampunk version of the originals (we hope), but it's still got merit.
-
By the Hair of Sanjaya you will be avenged Michael Bay.
-
I do like Jabba; he's a little less disgusting (and Bib Fortuna's pretty cool)>
-
But at least he ain't George Lucas. That fucker.
-
if you're not bitching because this person's extremely cool artwork is not to your personal taste, you're bitching because he didn't provide you with a desktop image the right size for your monitor.
Dude sometimes I hate talkbackers. -
Thanks!
-
Fantastic. Reimagination is the soul of successful reinvention. The images rock. And where's the Falcon? Dark Horse, get this commissioned as a GN PRONTO!!!
-
why be negative, after all in what other forum should a nerds imagination be encouraged to run free than the aint it cool. keep drawing dude or dudette-- heres hoping we will be seeing your interpretation of a steampunk "chronicles of riddick" or "alien" in the near future
-
I thought it already was! Well, the first one anyway ;D
-
HAHAHA!! uhh.... but seriously, they're ugly.
-
Sounds intersting! Not really into Manga but did watch Akira many years ago and loved it. And guess what, this is by the same guy!! So seriously, is it any good?
-
instead of that asshole who thinks everything in the star wars universe should look like cute little dogs.
-
Postcyberpunk is the next Goth is the next Gothpunk is the next Steamgoth is the next Zombipunk is the next Electroclash is the next Cyberclash is the next Zombigoth until it ends at Pirates. It always ends at pirates....until Piratepunk is the next Steampirate is the next........
-
I was expecting something cooler than cool and got some blah pictures instead. Whatever. At least Moriarty got a boner out of it.
-
Someone please explain this to me.
-
I love it.
-
steampunk is basically when you convert steam into a waveform signal which can play one of three classic punk tunes which are 1.) Holiday In Cambodia 2.) I Want To Conquer The World and 3.)Mmm Bop.... its basically like optical audio, except instead of a fiber optic cable, it uses steam. quite simple actually. They're to make it compatible with iTunes. It's going to be sweet. you can have boiling hot steam melting your face all while listening to three of the greatest songs ever recorded!!!333
-
NOFX drives a steam-powered winged tourbus/airship. steampunk. it makes perfect sense.
-
If any of you actually had the attention span to read, the artist admits on his page that there is no originality to any of what he did, so you guys pointing out the unoriginality of his work shows you lack the ability to read more than 2 words of text in any given passage. Shameful.
-
If you pretend that they aren't supposed to be Han Solo and Chewbacca. I just think they look like two pretty cool characters. They just aren't Han and Chewie.
Cause Chewie's not a dog.
He's a wookie.
And wookie's don't wear hats.

LMAO
That's awesome. -
Especially the Han Solo version, not to mention Jabba and Bib Fortuna with the turban. If you want animated steampunk, check out "The Amazing Screw-On Head". People often refer to the material known as "steampunk" as [referencing Jules Verne] "Verne-ish" or "Verne-esque", kinda like how anime used to be referred to as "Japanimation" back in the 80s by many. You can find other traces - aside from obvious ones - of steampunk in scifi genre in stuff like *Max Headroom* or even the 1996 *Doctor Who* tv movie. Actually, check that out for the most in non-Verne material. The TARDIS Console Room is fully steampunk plus gothic.
-
...but this one sucks. Not my cup of tea. I was excited until I saw "Steampunk."
-
Where's the Falcon as a dirigible?
