Jet Li getting wrapped up in THE MUMMY 3?
Hey folks, Harry here - seems that Rob Cohen is possibly up to something very cool with THE MUMMY 3 - given that he apparently has Jet Li in negotiations to play his chinese mummy in the latest incarnation of that Stephen Sommers franchise.
First off - you should know this film is following the grown up adventures of Brendan and Rachel's son - who has since fought in World War II and has in his post war years taken to the "family business" of Archeology and necro-ass-kickery.
I'm one of the rare breed - that didn't care too much for the first MUMMY, but was won over by the silliness of the second (though I hated the Scorpion King's effects in that one - and that off-shoot film, as well). I'm genuinely curious to see what a non-Sommers directed MUMMY flick will be like, although - Rob Cohen is possibly an even more hyperactive director than Stephen - albeit less Saturday morning cartoony... and more 'extreme' about his hyperactivity.
Rob was developing a Sinbad film for a while and I'm wondering if he's injecting that desire for an action-fantasy-horror film vibe into this. Hopefully - they'll drop the tongue in cheek stuff and just make this a straight Adventure film that is fun for us all. As for Jet Li... I'm very curious to see what sort of Mummy he turns out to be, cuz, I just don't see him slowly stumbling forward... but then... Kung Fu Mummy action could be a blast of goofy dusty whoopass.

The last Mummy came out 5-6-7 years ago and it really wasnt that great, especially The Scorpion King crap.I think Brendan Frasier and Rachel Weisz made those films and John Hannah was great too.
Now there annoying little kid is grown up and taking over, sound truly Original really.
And as for Rob Cohen the best thing he's ever done was produce Monster Squad and The Running Man. -
Does he get to play himself as an old coot or are they bringing Sean Connery in for this one?
-
I like a lot of his Hong Kong stuff (especially Once Upon A Time In China), but his Hollywood career has been a disaster. Playing the villain in a third Mummy film doesn't seem like it'll turn things around, either. Is this going to be the first stage of his post-kung fu career? I heard he retired from chop socky or something.
-
That's my word from the council estates

Seven words that should never be used in one sentence.
-
latinoreview used to have a pretty damning script review of mummy 3 set in china- although that earlier draft featured them. I read that weisz was up for it - but I guess the script put them both off. Im sure its been revised since, so theres a chance this could be as good as the first......which means its not worth watching either way as these movies stink. We got the real deal coming anyhow -Indiana Jones
-
Rob Cohen was annouced as director... and now Martial Arts Mummies is the final nail in the coffin for me.
www.obsessedwithfilm.com -
that scene was pretty cool though.
-
Although even that couldn't make Stealth watchable.
-
But before all the geekos say it should involve loads more violence etc.. remember, it's a no-brainer crappy kids film franchise. Like a poor man's Pirates of the C. Apparently they had to double Rachel Weisz's money for her to even do the sequel! Still, it should be quite fun - anytime Jet Li kicks ass, he kicks it real good.
-
...even though Brendan Fraser probably won't be in this one, it won't stop it from ending up in the $5.50 bin at Wal-Mart with all the rest of his movies.
-
second was a poor man's first. scorpion king was some horseshit on a car bonnet on a summer's day in hackney. this will be whale afterbirth. this WILL be bad. and not in a good way. what the fuck is jet Li doing? and dont tell me he 'gotta eat'. coz dat fucka is minted like the queen's tampons surely.
-
Is that all those Jet Li fans where tacitly understanding of him quitting Kung Fu productions for serious movies. Serious movies...
I need more liquor
-
I have read and seen interviews with Jet Li attempting to clarify what he meant by his so called retirement from martial arts movies. He said that he simply didnt want to play epic chinese heros like Wong Fei Hung or Huo Yuan Jia anymore, that he would continue to do ALL kinds of kung fu movies...just not epic period pieces portraying legendary kung fu heros...speaking of which..Jet is about to do the Monkey King movie called "Kings Of Kung Fu" with Jacky Chan based on a the book "Journey To The West" an ancient chinese legend. He will be playing longevity monk and the monkey king...two of the most beloved legendary kung fu heros...so...maybe all that "Jet's final martial arts movie!" nonsense was just a marketing ploy?
I wonder if Chinese mummys hop around like Chinese zombies? -
That's pretty funny about the monkey king, like Steven Seagal saying he's giving up the roles that made him famous and then announcing his next film will be Vengeance For A Killing, the story of a retired CIA black-ops agent now working as a dog walker.
-
Ya know, where he combined some pretty fine action with good acting.
-
...a Barbosa-like cameo from Imhotep at the end, thus setting up The Mummy 4? I HATED Stealth with a passion and haven't really liked anything Cohen's done, so I'm not very optimistic about this. I do like the change of cultural environment, though. Like TomBodet implied - needs more Beni.
-
Two things:
Weisz should get her tits out.
Bring back Vosloo! -
"I'm... a Librarian!"
I think I fell in love with her a little at that moment. {sigh} -
seriously? ... I just went from going "oh my god, woohoo!" to "I don't know about this" in the space of a second.
As for Hollywood not getting Jet Li, they never got Jackie Chan either. Police Story vs The Tuxedo anyone? The ol' Hong Kong action fliks were a breed of their own, never to be equalled - though many will try. Korea's not doing too badly at the moment I gotta admit. -

Only a ritalin starved 8 yr old would prefer the 2nd film
by judge dredds dirty undies
When I saw the mummy returns at the cinema I thought it was appalling, upon rewatching it I found it much more enjoyable but the first Mummy film is still much better, plus it had Jerry Goldsmiths great score. I liked Dragon but everything Cohens done since then has sucked ass.
-
I actually liked unleashed and bought it on video.
Idk about him being in mummy 3 though -
STRAIGHT TO VIDEO o.k. sorry 3 words
-
Okay, I just had this cool idea. They probably won't do it though, but I'm just going to throw it out there anyway. (It's kind of crazy.) Since they're casting Jet Li anyway, wouldn't it be awesome if they used the opportunity to have him do some karate? I mean it just makes sense. You've got him there in your movie already. And he knows karate. They should just go for it!
-
I'm really dissappointed that they're following the son instead... The movies are all about Brendan and Rachel's characters!
-
"Anuck sun nu muuuuuuuuuuun!" Seriously though, i think they should just leave this one alone, the ending of the mummy returns seemed to wrap the franchise up (no pun intended). Also, am i the only one who liked the scorpion king? Yeah it was cheesy but it was fun! Plus it had kelly hu, the lovely but underused starlett who will be mine one day.....one day.......
-
Take a Shit Guy from Lost. Seriously. Check out 300. Dude is ripped. He could kung fu fight the mummy for a while and then just start unraveling him to use as shit wipes.Wow. I meant that as a joke, but now that I've got it all down in black and white, that premise actually reads better than the real one for this movie.
-
First of all, he's had too much on his plate. Secondly, directing duties fell to this Cohen jerk. (NO ONE LIKED "STEALTH".) Thirdly, THERE'S NO NEED FOR RICK AND EVIE ANYMORE!!!!
-
Sommers, Fraiser and CO. had a golden opportunity to revive all of the old 'silver screen' monsters - The Creature, The Werewolf, ect. The sequal should have been more like a stand alone old fashioned monster movie, rather than reviving the same bad guy for a second go round. Personally, I would have loved to see Fraiser and Weiz beating their way up the Amazon where they encounter the Creature From The Black Lagoon.
-
is fucking fit. they need to keep this fine bit in this shitfest of a film or no one will c it. if shes in it, i'll c it. shes getting on a bit, but fuck is she still fit! dats my contribution.
-
... is a film which reveals not only Liv Tylers breasts, but Rachel Weisz's too, and some pubic for the public as well. And I want to know more about the 'Jackie Chan/Jet Li together' movie. Sorry knife&fork... Kelly Hu.... is already mine dude. Shes been mine ever since Jason took manhattan. Sorry mate.
-
...into ONE film. I mean, jeez, the old Chinese TV series of it, aside from the scariest prosthetic monkey face i've ever seen, was.... ambitious.... and.....long. The book is the same.
-
I liked Mummy 2 better than 1. It might have just been the marketing for part 1, where they actually made it seem like a straight cool horror-adventure (more horror than adventure). 2 was just wayyy more over the top, but at least by then you knew what you were getting into. They pretty much abandoned any attempt at seriousness, and it worked better.
-
Fortunately they are not going to try to cram all of Journey to the West in one movie. They are going to focus on the part of the story when Monkey and Longevity Monk get seperated. Longevity Monk ends up with Monkey's magical golden rod and has to rescue Monkey who I beleive is trapped in a giant cacoon...or maybe an egg. Anyways...its going to be a strange take on the whole thing. Rob Minkoff is set to direct it..Yuen Woo Ping will do the fight choreography. The story begins in modern times...a boy steps into a Chinese antiquity shop, touches some magical item he should not and is magicaly transported back in time. He somehow ends up with Longevity Monk.
-
If there's a movie that I couldn't care less about, this is one of them. Get ready for a flop, folks.
-
like this . . . I mean, come on, Stephen Sommers is too good to waste his talent on this! Do you realize what that says?!
-
But really, I prefer the second film. The Anubis army, the fun pygmy sequence, 30s London, etc.
-
natchally...
-
When Worlds Collide, Magic Kingdom for Sale-SOLD!, Flash Gordon, and a pirate movie...aside from nos. 2 and 3, I'd rather have him finish up that VH trilogy. A lot of us want to see more of J-Rock Drac. But anyway, I'm just worried those "Smallville" guys won't do as much research on folklore as he did on the first two...
-
But no Brendan Fraiser??? He's one of the main reasons I liked them!
-
Why not let him play a Chinese mommy, huh? How about that? Geesh, I wish that Li someday (soon) gets a cool director with a cool story...
-
but you know, still "news" I guess
-
Awwww, ain't it cute news?
-
Don't. Just. Please. Don't.
-
Bring it on Rob Cohen! You're the man! But get Vin Diesel to play the new Scorpion Prince and Paul Walker to play Brednon's son and they have to race to the death through the pyramids. You go, breh!
-
Hehehe. Couldn't help it. That was funny, GMT.
-
There is no possible way a Rob Cohen-directed mummy flick would be anything less than a halfway-decent looking steaming pile of acting and story-less shit! And I thought Jet Li was "retiring" from action flicks to focus on serious acting. Definitely not sticking to that with the director of such gems as The Skulls, Stealth and XxX. Harry, when did you completely sell out?
-
I wasnt aware I was back to being back to 8 years old. But wheres my ritalin? And yes Mummy 2 kicked the shit out of the first one.

Chinese jumping mummies, please!
-
Kelly Hu is ridiculously "HAWT".Scorpion King was dumb fun for me too. Rock and Hu made it cheese-tasic.
-
It was like those pulp novels and italian movies i used to enjoy in the early 80´s
-
They should just stop this series. I am one of those who thought the second was a step down. I am biased about Scorp King since I like The Rock and Kelly Hu, however that does not excuse it's corny plot. This Mummy 3 sounds stupid at first but perhaps we will be surprised???. Even if Jet Li and Gong Li show up in this, I can't foresee my money being plunked down for this. It'll probably be better than Bayformers though. Ugh.slaughta-kidd, I know you failed your remedial grammar class and/or ESL course, but stop yelling and screaming at people. Not cool and not funny; simply annoying. Take that caps lock off and speak like a human being. I embrace the freedom of speach ideal, however.....
-
franchise? what franchise? the only good one was the first one, people. all the others are disposable. i only own the first one, and dat i nicked from blockbusters. i mugged some fella last week and he had mummy 2 and scorpion king, so i sold them back to him. fuck dat! rachel weiz is fit, but not enough to bring the masses.
-
Nice. I see that. However, should have to keep lowering our expectations with each subsequent film? Obviously so. Sorry to sound negative/cynical, but it just too early for me to get excited. Sounds like the script is a pile. Time will tell.
-
but IT'S just too early...
-
Good Lord. How could anyone who is a fan of movies of all eras think that? The first movie did not try to go for seriousness. It's seriousness was only an adventure serial kind of drama, and I thought the whole film had a sense of humor that showed they obviously knew this was all for fun. The second was simply special effects gone wild. With a precocious little kid thrown in for extra shit value. Yeesh.
-
If the son takes on the "family business" then at least one of his parents has to show up. I hope both do. The 1st mummy ruled! As for the 2nd, it was sweet until the HORRIBLE cgi scorpking showed up! I will watch the third.
-
No one wants to hear your wanna-be hip ebonics bullshit.
-
i thought the cunt was talkin another language or something. like spanish or some shit like that.
-
I can assure you that I have no affiliation with Mr. Cohen. I agree that we should boicott this moovie film since it has kung fu midget wrapped in toilet paper instead of gypsy bald man with lepprosy.
-
Twice I've tried to watch the Mummy, and both times I didn't make it for boredom - something I never ever feel. The Mummy Returns in stark contrast was ridiculously fun for me, and I saw it twice on screen!
With Episode One and Matrix in theaters, I just never got those people walking in to see the Mummy. What were they doing in there? -

Jet needs to stick to French and Chinese/Hong Kong films. His American films tend to be atrocious pieces of shit.
-
it is awful. The kid, who should have died in the second film is now all grown up and apparently the kid has to rescue his ma and pa. So he is the focus of this film. YUCK.
-
odd. I thought he was working on some big catastrophe film, when worlds collide or flash gordon, which seems pretty dead.
-
the french company behind the Queen are making the Iron Lady biopic. Or as she said herself" they knew I was coming to the conference as I saw poster that read The Mummy returns". Thatcher the biopic, hmmm, I cant see that being much of a draw and I am not Joking. Loyalist playwright Gary Mitchell has been commissioned to write the Ian Paisley Biopic. Liam Neeson has said that wants to do it but the Paisley family arent impressed. Neeson is from Ballymena but locals were not happy when neeson portayed Micheal Collins. Neeson can do it, he has the presence, the height, the stature and the booming voice. There is another film being made. SO two films about the big man. Two old relics, The Iron lady and the big man from Ballymena battling out at the box office. Just as long as thiers no adams film being planned I will be happy. Ill stop I beginning to fell ill at all this hogwash.....
-
DAMN YOU TO HELL!
-
Weisz and Fraiser ARE in the movie. They all have leading roles like in the first 2. Come on, do you really think they'd make a Mummy 3 without EITHER of them and just a grown-up son who isn't a big name? No one would come to see that crap, it would go STR8 to DVD. Plus Weisz has an Oscar so of course they'd give her something to do in the film. It'll just be a family adventure thing. Working together to take down Jet Li. And I HIGHLY doubt they'll have him doin Kung Fu. He'll fight, but I dont think he'll be doing his martial arts specialities in this film, otherwise it'd be corny and they know that. I'm just hoping the guy that plays Weisz brother comes back. He made it funny. Oh, and the Arab dude. Weisz, Fraiser, the brother, and the Arab guy pretty much made the films. You cant have a third Mummy without them. Duh.
-
I think I forgot to mention he wanted to make a movie version of the novel "The Big Love", which I had read and didn't finish because it was awful.
-
Damned if that's not what sold me on seeing this film. Loved the first one, but the second was way over the top.
And I'm not sure about Weisz's involvement. Like I've been saying for a while, she's a fucking Oscar winner. She doesn't need to do this. -
It seems that for every movie that is released, all sorts of people (like yourselves) feel the need to rip it apart before its even in production. Whining about Jet Li being cast as a mummy or the fact that they're even making a number 3. There were posts similar to this about the movie 300, and despite all those peoples efforts, i loved it. So while it doesnt effect your life whatsoever, why dont you all stop whining and see what it delivers. Although i myself am not a big fan of the franchise, i find it downright ridiculous that so many people talk smack about filmmakers that, while they may not make a movie for YOU, still have much more talent in they're fields than most of you could imagine. I'd like to see the crap some of you could put on the shelves. I guess people will just always feel the need to complain. Its human nature.
-
I wonder if Monkey were trapped inside a pair of cymbals? That happened at one point in the story, I think. That's one of my favorite book series, for sure.
-
Rachel Weisz DOES want to be there. Although a while back it was said that she didnt want to return, but recently last year she changed her mind. She said, and was QUOTED, that she heard they were making the Mummy 3 and that she'd WANTED and would LOVE to be a part of it. I honestly dont care if she was an Oscar winner. An Oscar winner can be in any kind of mummy. Look at Halle Berry in Catwoman(although it was crap). Look at Charlize Theron in Aeon Flux (i kinda liked that movie). You cant have a Mummy 3 without Rachel Weisz. You just cant. She's also one of my favorite actresses. Loved her in Runaway Jury and Constantine. SHe need to be in Mummy 3. U cant say that she Doesnt need to do this film. It's her f***ing decision and if she wants to, f***in' let her! Not your choice to make.
-
Is that he is Yu-Law and he is nobody's bitch. Seriously though Bill Nighy should play the villain, could you imagine him as a mummy. At least then I'd be laughing with the movie.

Exactly what we've been craving, all these years.
-
...overuse of special effects/CG. Like Li in The One or Jackie Chan in The Tuxedo....CG ruins them. If you're gonna have Li fight in a movie..LET HIM FIGHT. No fast-cuts, or CG enhancements....just let him go. If they let Li be Li, I have no problems with him in Mummy....or any movie. :)
-
So will shia leboeuf be the grown up version of Alex Oconell?
:)
in anycase i will go and see this movie, hopefully there is a way to work in his parents and uncle into the story somehow.
i look forward to seeing what they have in store with this.

poor poor jet li

Young Alex was about eight in Mummy 2, which took place in 1936. So he would be about thirteen or fourteen around the time of Pearl Harbor and no older than seventeen on VE Day and VJ Day. I suppose to have fought in WWII he could have lied about his age, though.
-
i agree. she is too fit. but i'd have thought she'd grown out of doing films like the mummy 3. she's done good proper shit like the constant gardener or some shit then the fountain- bad move, confusing it shit but at least it wass tryna be highbrow, now shes signed up for this trainfull of camelshit. why? i dont get it. does she want to be taken seriously as an actress or what?
-
You guys need to just leave Weisz alone. If she wants to do the damn movie then let her. So just for doing Mummy 3 she wont be taken seriously as an actress? thats a load of bull. The only reason she really got noticed, or why I noticed her, was b/c of the Mummy films. She owes spotlight career to those films. so to say she's too good for Mummy 3 is a load of crap. It'll be fun for her and she'll have a good time doing it. She wants to do it so who are u to tell her she cant?
-
good points you've made, mate. but the points i'm making suggest she's doing a backward step. case in hand. eddie murphy did a wicked performance in dreamgirls, hell even I was shocked- i thought the guy was just a buffoon, well past his prime, fella. so the academy recognizes him (i think- or it might've ben bafta). then what does he do. he's goes one step back and does some shit called Norbit! he's bonkers! thats the analogy. same thing with Weicz.
