Is there a problem here, with Captivity and Hostel 2? Is there a point where these filmmakers are just going too far? Bijoux Phillips holding her own head, with that fantastic body in the European poster? What's the message there? Oh, it's so sexy to watch girls getting slaughtered? Are we so numb as a society that we just want to watch torture porn, screw the plot? And if not, what's next? I like Heather Matarazzo, and I don't find the idea of her being gutted on a meathook to be the least bit entertaining. I loved Halloween, I loved watching Jamie Lee getting away from Michael Myers ... but this just looks sick, and kind of depressing. I don't care how plucky the heroines are, it's just not the same. That being said, I will say that showing the two jerks from Desperate Housewives talking about their fun little outing at the Hostel ... that was chilling. But I can't support this film. Bet it makes 80 million opening week-end, though. The level of violence will be the only thing that makes people take off their Ipod headphones long enough to watch.

And i'm sure most people do, overwise there would be no Saw or Hostel movies, it's human nature to want to see people go through horrific situations. It doesn't make you sick, i'm sure many of us are not the violent type but we all watch this kind of thing. My only problem with Hostel is that it never really went far enough, I was just expecting much worse. Lets hope he ups the anti this time.

All these haters just 'lost' track and now just say it's crap because they can't get back into it. I can guarantee that in a year or so the same ones wil be slagging heroes. This is the problem with TV, you have to commit yourself to something like Lost otherwise you may aswell not bother. The amount of people I know who just watch the occasional episode and then say it's crap. I'm sure most films would be crap if you missed a chunk out.

    hostel 3

    by dang2010

This just in ... the filmakers of Hostel 2 are so impressed with the second film, they're moving ahead with a third. First was the guys, second was the girls ... the third one will be the kiddies. A school trip to Europe turns ugly, when the backers of the Hostel realize child torture sells even better. But, wait, this one won't just be torture porn, its really a film about female empowerment, as the plucky 12 year old heroine seizes her inner warrior to escape from the brutality of the Hostel, but not without losing a few digits. If they can't get Dakota Fanning, they're going to try for that chick from Little Miss Sunshine. Seriously, horror movies can be cathartic, and it doesn't make you a bad person to watch them. Maybe Hostel isn't going too far, but those Captivity billboards were, those people should be ashamed of themselves. But instead, they're probably proud because they know they scored a ton of free publicity for their little turkey.

    Eli Roth = Overrated garbage.

    by AllPowerfulWizardOfOz

This is one area where I disagree with Harry without question. I have no issue with Harry personally or think that Harry takes coin for movie reviews and those who say so are fucking morons. But as far as Eli Roth goes it's just a difference of opinion. As far as the movies Roth has out out. IMO......Cabin Fever, sucked. Hostel, sucked. He is no where near the genius that Harry claims him to be. I found both movies to be terrible. I gave him two chances out of fairness. I won't even bother with Hostel 2. I did watch the trailer though and that has to be one of the worst I've seen. Nothing about that trailer even remotely got me excited about the movie. This movie will be a total failure. Hopefully Eli Roth will stop making bad movies and just disappear. Sorry Harry he's just not that great.

that argument for Lost (which trust me, I have heard 4528 times) sounds to me like saying it's ok to be a crackhead, as long as you can afford it. you just have to commit!<p>the show is televised crack. great way to get ratings, but about as valuable artistically as "who wants to marry a midget?"<p>cigarettes are not good for you simply because they're addictive. Lost is not a good show simply because it hooks people into watching it week after week. you can't justify something's merit because people get hooked. that's like saying Roth's movies are great because they make money...so does Fall Out Boy...

I don't think artistic value was ever a top agenda for the creators of Lost. Intriging plot and suspense are though and the show delivers on both accounts. All I was saying is that no matter how good a serial drama is, it is pointless unless viewed in full. I'm taking it that you have been a devoted viewer though seeing as you can critisize, if you are not a devoted viewer then slagging the show is like slagging a film you have only watched part of.

the point is that that's not the point

    by BadMrWonka

I watched it for a bit, but it's just plain silly. but that's not the point. if you have to see every single goddamn episode of a serial drama (as you've written a few times), then it's going to be heavy handed and overwrought, in my opinion. you can watch and episode of the west wing and enjoy it on its merits, even if you haven't seen every episode. if a show is so laden with complicated (and ultimately, mostly unimportant) twists and turns, and full of dozens and dozens of characters that come and go at random, it is obviously going to suffer under that weight. character development and subtlety end up going by the wayside. lost is just The Real World on an island. a bunch of pretty people who end up not really getting anything done.

  • March 21, 2007, 1:58 a.m. CST

    Well...

    by pjdon

....of course the twists and turns won't make any sense if you don't watch it. Of course it is a bit silly it's sci-fi essentially. And as someone who watches the show every character has been well developed, esspecially with the use of flashbacks.

    hostel reality TV series

    by dang2010

Actually, the gore level of Hostel probably isn't enough. What we really need is a reality series, perhaps from the producers and director of Hostel? Here's a freebie for ya, guys, which really needs special people with a certain ... level of standards. Call it, "Who Wants to Marry A Serial Killer." Have 20 greedy Bachelor style bimbettes competing for the affections of a rich Prince Charming. The twist? He's really a Ted Bundy style serial killer! And instead of a rose for the girls who move on each week, the loser gets a special "elimination date" where she can plead her case, but really, she just ends up pleading for her life. And for the final winner, who thinks she gets to live in a castle with Prince Charming, she instead gets locked in it and wins the million dollarsonly if she can survive the night. Now, thats sexy. Oh, and you could use REAL PROPS FROM HOSTEL, just to give it that extra coolness factor! From executive producer Quentin Tarantino ... who wouldn't watch!

This clip was admittedly pretty boring, I don't know why he'd choose it to put up, there's so little real tension and we don't know who the guy driving the truck is so his lines and bad acting mean nothing. That was terrible. Eli Roth is the new William Castle. He talks a good film but has little to no talent for making them. He should get together with Zach Snyder and restart Troma studios. I'm sure they'd be happy there making their 'awesome' little movies....apologies to William Castles family, I merely meant that Roth is a good salesman, not that Mr Castle was a bad director. In fact, The tingler is better than everything Roth has made so far.
