Night Watch director really WANTED Angelina Jolie, Morgan Freeman and James McAvoy!!!

Published at:  Mar 20, 2007 2:16:20 AM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I'm not familiar with the graphic novel WANTED, but apparently Timur Bekmambetov (the Russian NIGHT WATCH films) is as he's directing an adaptation of it over at Universal Pictures. It has a great cast so far... Angelina Jolie, James McAvoy, Morgan Freeman are the first to join up.

The story is about a young man who realizes his father is an assassin. Of course, he realizes this just before his dad is murdered and has to take it upon himself to continue the family business. Jolie will be training him in the arts of killing.

With someone as crazy as Bekmambetov behind the camera, this will be an interesting project. Even if it fails it'll be a glorious failure. What are your thoughts?

...isn't gonna be about "supervillains" at all -- just super assassins. I liked the comic, but I think they can still pull this off without resorting to capes and powers. Why not?

There's no point being half-assed about this material - they have to just throw everything at the screen. This could be huge!

Too bad 8mile couldn't get off his ass and get interested in this instead of McAvoy. Probably recording some subpar comeback album. At least this movie will give Scarface a run for the money in the "fuck" department.

    by saracen1

I will splooge all over the screen.

I kinda wish they went with Eminem and Halle Barry for Wesley and The Fox, as Millar illustrated them. but that's nitpicking. The casting is still great!

    by gilest

...to like the graphic novel, after it got a glowing review from a friend, but it turned out to be somewhat of a disappointment. The whole thing boiled down to a pandering exercise to the fantasies of an impotent weakling - "Would't it be cool if you could rape and kill without recourse?" Er, no. Here's hoping that the movie takes the origins-of-a-supervillain concept and does something better with it than Mark Millar managed.

I´ve known about Timur Bekmambetovs involvement for a while, but Angelina and Morgan Freeman is good news indeed. Now I wonder if Angelina is gonna play that girl with cat ears. She is so hot in the comics. Teaches the hero how to be an assassin and teaches him all about sex there is to know.

    Wanted Comic Vs. Movie

    by eddieblake

The comic is either a "love it or hate it" kind of thing with everyone I know. I personally loved the comic and thought the ending was great, but what they're doing with the movie is so far removed from the comic that it's not even remotely the same thing. The whole premise of the comic*SPOILER* is that superheroes have all been killed by the supervillains and the world as we know it is being run by a secret cabal of supervillains in which the main character, Wesley, is the son of the greatest of them. Wesley inherits his father's legacy and powers and becomes involved in a huge conspiracy by a splinter group of supervillains who want to go back to the glory days of performing their villainy in public. It's a great story that would make a great movie, but my guess is that the studios are scared to make something so hard "R" as it would have to be with capes and tights.

    Great Comic, Shitty Ending

    by bill brasky

This was one of my favorite comics of '03/'04. The gritty storyline and great characters had an Astro City feel to it, but was definately bloodier and much more graphic. The book ended really badly though. Horrible final full page frame featuring the main character, now the boss of the underworld, giving you, the comic book reader, the middle finger and telling you that you are "sucking my dick." Really gay.

Nomore catwoman please, we all know she looks ridiculous trying to act tough. These actors are better than those the comic was based on, if they stay true to the rough edge of the source this will be amazing.Havent seen the russians work but if he's strong on style, thats all he needs with this story.
Some DORK just gave the ending...movie probably wont end like that anyway. But if it's not "R" i worry about it.

Sin City taught the studios, going all out will make you big bucks, So universal is probably looking for a movie that can rival that bad boy.

    by frijole

Everyone worked for scale or close to it on SIN CITY (or at least that is my understanding) and the movie did make money, but it was hardly a blockbuster. I'm pretty sure 300 has made more in its first week than SIN CITY did in its entire theatrical run... and that is without the "all star cast". (This is NOT a light on SIN CITY)

    Wubbish Stunt Casting.

    by wowsah156

With the exception of MacAvoy the casting for this movie sucks already. Freeman shouldnt associate with this movie since he is already a part of the Batman franchise now and will just remind people of Batman. Jolie is a non starter. She is just casting couch material. I dont see her has a "deadly" assasin. Just a spoilt Beverly Hills wifey. No use. For Wanted to work it will have to be brutal , and the casting suggests soft pussies who live in bubbles. Wubbish.

    by zeroc

THE STORY HAS THE MAIN CHARACTER RAPING AND MURDERING LOTS AND LOTS OF INNOCENT PEOPLE FOR FUN. At one point, and this is actually one of the most important moments in the comic, he kills an entire police station full of cops because he felt like it. Hollywood does not have the balls to remain faithful to the graphic novel and we'll end up with an action movie that essentially misses the entire point of the story.

McAvoy should be in the movie version of INVINCIBLE

    by drath

I'm sure he can fake any non-Scottish accent, and he seems like a good fit for the part physically. Plus he's been great in everything I've seen him from Children of Dune to Last King of Scotland, so I know he can act too (provided that matters). Or maybe he'll get cast as Maguire's replacement as Spider-Man in case Jake Gyllenhaal loses his mind and makes Shazaam! instead of doing what Sony has been mulling over pretty much ever since Maguire got the part.

The great stuff from the series are either too depraved or too comic book specific. I hated the first issue but I dug the alternating history and jumping dimension stuff. I just get the feeling that this movie will wind up being like fucking Swordfish with a slick look, annoying character twists, and nonesensical action scenes. I mean, how will that last gunfight not look supergay?

Wanted was famously designed as a vehicle for Halle Berry and Eminem, but I gotta say I like Bekmambetov's casting better than the comics creators. Morgan Freeman? James McAvoy? Angelina Jolie? I am so TOTALLY there opening day. (And all you Night Watch/Day Watch haters can suck it; both flicks were great, and Fox has really dropped the ball on the whole franchise.)

I predict that's the only way they'll be able to make the film marketable. The Killer will reevaluate his Villain status, and he'll just kill all the bad guys and bring heroes back to world. I hope this doesn't happen, but it's what I expect.
