    Great show

    by 12-gauge

Even re-watching the edited ones on A&E reminds of its brilliance.

And I support all the love on this site for shows like Gilmore Girls and even Veronica Mars. Gilmore is great,
but where is any kind of love for Friday Night Lights.

This show truly deserves much more attention. At least a thread on here sometime. And it's filmed in Austin!
Maybe it's the football thing: a lot of movie geeks (I'm one of them) feel animosity towards the football aspect. But the show's not even really about football!

    by nopix

It's sad, but this show has given us so much brilliance that it's probably close to being sapped dry, and thus, it must come to an end. I own all the dvd's and I have to say that each season has a tremendous repeat value. Vanity Fair is correct in proclaiming The Sopranos as being on par with Goodfellas and The Godfather. Each explores organized crime in its own unique, beautiful, and fully realized way. Not to mention a soundtrack that would even make Scorsese proud.

    Woke up this morning...

    by jimmy rabbitte

...and found some people dogging The Sopranos. It's really too bad for those people that can't understand the overall quality of a great show like The Sopranos.

Yeah, the whole Johnnycakes thing was dumb, boring and drawn out; but if David Chase had been allowed to have things the way he originally wanted... this show would've ended after season 2 or 3. Seasons 4 and 5 felt like (mostly) natural extensions of the show's original blueprint. Season 6 has been its' own thing entirely, and was never part of the originally planned series arc... so it is likely to have a somewhat different feel to it. Besides lives move forward and change all the time; with the mob being all about earning, it's whoever makes the most money for everybody that gets to be the biggest "hero". Things for them can change very quickly.

As for the Russian from the "Pine Barrens"... David Chase commented somewhere on the season 6 DVD's that he... "has no idea what happened to the Russian"... and can't believe it when fans of the show stop him in public, all these years later, and still ask him about it... So it doesn't sound like he plans to ever address that again.

Steve Buscemi has done one a season since Pine Barrens, we've had Lee Tamahori (Toodle-fucking-oo, my all-time favourite ep), Mike Figgis (Cold Cuts), Peter Bogdanovich (Sentimental Education), Rodrigo Garcia (All Happy Families).

    I enjoy intelligent story

    by cvb784

I enjoy intelligent story telling and can appreciate character development, but this show is way past its prime. 3 seasons ago I began to grow tired of it, and by the end of last season I wondered why I watched it at all. I will certainly watch the last season since I've spent a decade of my life following the story, but I won't be surprised if nothing happens. I certainly want my shows to evolve, but this show has just strayed from its focus that made it appealing in the first place.

WHY IS THE RUSSIAN A BIG DEAL?

    by cekma

I think it would be lame if the Russian came back. It's more authentic and makes sense the way it is, he was almost dead and ran the fuck to safety. Why would you show your face again. How is this a plot hole?

    Grab a brain

    by oogabooga

Its a big deal because the guy was in the Russian Mafia you don't get to kill one of them without serious consequences. The whole episode was set up to show what a huge mistake Paulie and Chris made. Tony is trusting most of his money to this russian mob guy and then his guys try to kill his closest friend. The whole premise of the show was how Tony's way of life was disappearing and this episode was the cause of his downfall. But then HBO gave Chase a bajillion dollars to keep it going and instead of coming up with something good we got Johnny Cakes and a bunch of other filler crap.

    SIX SEASONS...

    by mc vamp

Yes, it seems as if the show has been around forever, but there are only SIX SEASONS. You know why it seems tired and drawn out? Because you've seen the same five 1/2 seasons over a period of what, nine years? Six seasons of well thought out hard-hitting drama that is obviously not rushed for a quick buck. Like it or not, "The Sopranos" is HBO's hallmark series and the scripted television show with quite probably the most notable long-term (looking ahead) impact over the past decade. Even if you believe "Rome," "Deadwood," "Carnivale," "The Wire," or anything else has surpassed it in short-term quality, the series has an impact beyond its broadcast and will continue to do so as long as it is referenced by society. The US (and much of the world) is fascinated with the American gangster, and when properly done, gangster fiction surpasses Westerns, Sci-Fi, and Police fiction by miles. Possibly because there are so many people out there who secretly wish they could be Tony Soprano, Vito Corleone, Henry Hill, Tony Montana, and the like. Possibly because crime is the shortest line possible to the beginnings of the greedy version of the "American Dream." Maybe it's simply the unfulfilled streak of rebellious violence that lies within so many of us (myself included) that draws so many modern viewers and readers to Anti-heroes. Whatever you believe, The Sopranos (the characters and the show itself) have entered the realm of the "household name" for the long term in a way very few recent shows can: Seinfeld, ER, CSI, American Idol, Survivor, Simpsons, and a couple more. And unlike most of these shows, by ending at season six, the creators are showing incredible restraint by actually bringing the character arcs to what is hopefully a satisfying close without beating the premise into the ground for X number of years. I'll be sad to see it go, but thankfully, I won't be sad to see it dwindle into repetitive crap...because with the closing credits of this season, it will no longer be possible. (Outside of a full-length movie, which I'm fine with, though I don't see what new ground could be covered.)

Seriously, forget about the Russian in the Pine Barrens

    by slone13

Sometimes things happen in life without resolution. In fact, a LOT of shit happens in life that doens't EVER get neatly resolved. The missing Russian thread is as dead as Mr.Eko. Let it go.

I think people are fascinated with the Russian because

    by dirkd13"

    1. Pine Barrens sits atop or near the top of many people's fave episode lists (myself included).2.He was an ex-Russian soldier who washes his balls in ice water and has a girl's name (Valery).3.The characters themselves have reffered to the incident on more than one occasion, even nearly coming to fisticuffs over it.4.He saved the life of the leader of the Russian Mafia with whom Tony has a close business relationship, and you "don't mess with those Russians" (to quote Tony himself when Janice nicked one-legged-hot-Russian-smoker-chick's false leg).5.He was a hugely memorable character.6.He got shot.7.In the head.8.And survived.9.Wearing no shoes or jacket.10.In the snow.

    by oogabooga

Hey I have no problem letting it go I'm just saying its really shitty writing just like Mr Eko's last episode. And this "its just like life" horseshit the Sopranos apologists spew out is just sad. I know that in real life if I take a Russian mobster who used to be a commando out into the woods to kill him and don't succeed and he gets away and my car ends up missing I KNOW he's still alive and coming to get me.

    by nopix

Yes, it seems like the Russian could come back. But this is The Sopranos, does it EVER cater to your cliche needs? Why can't you be satisified by ambiguity? It's a very intersting and memorable story BECAUSE the russian was never found. The fact that you guys can't accept that makes you kind of stupid. Look at Employee of the Month, not your typical resolution, right? So you want the Russian to come back with a vengeance and want a gang war with the Russian moB....well fuck you. I have no idea what show you think you are watching. Chase has already said that it was a self contained episode. FUCK ALL OF YOU.

    by thunderpants

Okay...this is the real problem with the Russian storyline. He IS dead. And that is why so many of us are baffled that the storyline stopped. Valery's boss KNEW that Paulie and Christopher were going to collect from him. There was an obvious struggle and now Valery disappears. You don't see the problem with just dropping the story there?

Everyone who wants the Russian back...

    by billypilgrim

ARE A BUNCH OF COMMIE PINKOS! You want Russians? Go live in Russia! As far as Season 6 the ideas were interesting but they were strung out to long. It was funny when the guys were sitting around Bings talking about Vito. They may have given him a pass till they found out he was "catching" instead of "pitching". That was a priceless scene. We got confirmation that for all of Carmela's talk she's just a shallow self centered git. Also I don't know why Tony was thinking he ever had a choice. The only way out of the Mafia is death.
