Hercules Has Loudly Proclaimed His Love For Conan O'Brien's ANDY BARKER, P.I. On NBC; What Say The Critics??

Published at:  Mar 15, 2007 4:54:57 PM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

I love Conan O’Brien’s new sitcom “Andy Barker, P.I.” Really love it. Every episode makes me laugh aloud, often several times per installment, which is rare. I think it rivals “The Office” as perhaps best current live-action sitcom on the network grid.

And I was excited last week to direct Ain't It Cool readers to nbc.com, which was streaming all six episodes well in advance of tonight's premiere.

The reaction in talkback?

“The jokes are played out and stereotypical of bad tv writing” – talkbacker “Outrider304”

“This show is really the polar opposite of The Office's well-written comedy. I mean, pratfalls?” – talkbacker “topaz4206”

“I will never watch another episode of this show again. It was awful.” – talkbacker “cooke”

“pretty bad. Just another subpar show like Knights of Prosperity.” – talkbacker “Ben Hawkins”

“‘Mediocre’ is the best word I could use to describe it.” – talkbacker “deucefilms”

Confused, I watched the episodes again, just to make sure I didn’t mix up my meds or hit my head the first morning I watched “Andy Barker.” Still found it hilarious! Inspired teleplays, truly accomplished comedy direction, riotous performances by Richter, Tony Hale, Harve Presnell and Clea Lewis.

So I guess these days I just laugh, mental patient-like, at stuff that’s not funny.

Let’s see if the critics harbor the same level of loathing as the talkbackers:

USA Today gives it three and a half (out of four) stars and says:

… if you're a comedy fan, you owe it to yourself, and Richter, to check it out. …

TV Guide gives it an “8” (out of 10) and says:

… Nerdy sweetness and deep silliness flow effortlessly from Andy Richter as a chipper accountant (don't dare call him a bookkeeper) turned accidental gumshoe in a series of blissfully absurd capers. …

Entertainment Weekly gives it a “B-plus” and says:

… The show isn't afraid to be quiet, taking its cue from its mild-mannered title character, who utters no oaths stronger than ''Mother Hubbard!'' In one episode, a venal, steamboat-size slob is murdered, and the funniest bits aren't the guy's passionate eating binges (''The man kept a thermos of emergency bisque!'' marvels Andy), but the reaction shots of Andy politely trying to hide his shock at hearing the deceased's many lovers lust over him. ''You thiiiink?'' he squints when the guy's wife suggests he had a mistress. Richter's inherent archness is nicely anchored by septuagenarian Harve Presnell, a character actor best known as William H. Macy's badass father-in-law in Fargo. Presnell plays Andy's equally badass detective mentor, and it's a sign of the show's underdog ethos that the leatherjacketed AARP member is the resident stud here. …

The New York Times says:

… Part of what’s satisfying about “Andy Barker” is that it answers a truly urgent historical question: What would Jake Gittes, Philip Marlowe or Sam Spade have done with Google? Often Andy turns to the old Internet when he wants to find a fact or a fugitive, and the camera is not shy with its shots of the computer screen. The show is surprisingly beautiful — if you came across it while flipping channels, you’d think it was a movie — and that adds to its platinum-card sheen. NBC has lately become a network for the rich, which would be nauseating except that sometimes “upscale” also means “good.” This peculiar series seals NBC’s new role as the skinflint’s HBO. The shows “30 Rock,” “Friday Night Lights” and now “Andy Barker, P.I.” are all so engrossing and so creatively untrammeled that it’s almost suspicious. Have the rules of network TV changed? Does no one need to make money anymore? We may be in a golden age. Watch these shows while you still can, meaning now.…

The Los Angeles Times says:

… a quietly delightful new series … It's funny, but it doesn't go for big laughs so much as a mood of whimsical parody. … there was something brilliant about making him a CPA — a person with confident knowledge about things most of us dimly understand and, in some cases, actively fear: numbers, forms, taxes, money. His day job makes him oddly more romantic than less.

The Washington Post says:

… Even though (or because) we're only seven years in, it's safe to call it "one of the best comedies of the 21st century!" What it lacks in edge, it makes up for in charm. … "Andy Barker P.I." sails along on an admirably even keel, brightened by moments that are convulsively funny -- visual gags and subtler forms of slapstick. It's the kind of comedy that sneaks up on you. Sneaks up on you and threatens to steal your heart.

The Chicago Tribune says:

… the show itself is smart, if only to show off Barker’s innocence. … Everything about “Andy Barker” — from the excellent supporting cast to the kicky opening graphics recalling “Mannix” and “The Rockford Files,” and the dorky action scenes meant to evoke “Starsky and Hutch” — is lovingly created. And there are some laughs, but the show fails to truly catch fire. …

The Denver Post says:

… wonderfully clever … "Andy Barker, P.I." nails the comedy. Judging by the first three episodes, it deserves a long run. …

The Kansas City Star says:

… Last summer I rated “The Knights of Prosperity” as my favorite new comedy of the upcoming TV season. In fairness, that was because I hadn’t yet seen full episodes of “Andy Barker P.I.,” … With all the crazy gags, pitch-perfect dialogue and a fresh hero at the center, it’s hard not to see “Andy Barker” as the spiritual successor to “Police Squad!” …

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer says:

… The sheer goofiness of their performances makes it the kind of sitcom some people will evangelize about. Yes, some. Its bizarre humor isn't what you'd call universal. With mysteries that revolve around (among other things) the sex appeal of a morbidly obese man, chickens, the mob -- lord help us, there's even a ninja in there -- you're either on this train from the start or it speeds right by you. (If you're in the latter category, look for me -- I'll be waving to you from the lounge car.)… There's no need to wax on over how perfectly Richter handles the central role, or what an outrageous foil Hale is. (Watching him hit on Andy's assistant in the second episode is hilariously unsettling enough to show how right it feels to watch him act so wrongly.) Presnell's hard-boiled, leathery Lew is "Andy Barker's" real breakout character, loaded with vinegary one-liners that grow more acidic and grizzled as time goes on. He gets the best writing and knows what to do with it. The man has unimpeachable timing. …

The Portland Oregonian says:

… the deceptively low-key "Andy Barker, P.I.," the latest product of "Late Night" star Conan O'Brien's comedy funhouse, arguably pushes NBC's comedy game to a whole new level. … It's all pitch-perfect: the car chases, the funky soundtrack, the way one crusty cop gets up in the face of a young suspect and rips into him as if it were still the dawning of the Age of Aquarius: "Listen, hippie! You take your orders from me, not Charlie Manson!" …

The Saint Louis Post-Dispatch says:

… Wonderfully silly and lovably off-center, Andy Richter's new comedy is a real charmer. … With its retro tone, ultradry humor and lack of a laugh track, "Andy Barker" is unlikely to appeal to fans of joke-punch line-rimshot sitcoms. But it's a perfect fit with NBC's Thursday cluster of unpredictable comedies. …

The San Francisco Chronicle says:

… a gleefully spoof-tacular gem from Conan O'Brien… … "Andy Barker, P.I." is a joyous, ridiculous, warm, affecting and silly comedy that is tone specific (read: Not everybody is going to get the vibe, and thus the jokes). …

The Boston Herald says:

… Richter’s ex-boss, Conan O’Brien, co-created the series and serves as executive producer. He’s put together a sweet vehicle that plays off Richter’s comedic gifts. … There’s no mistaking the math here. The numbers add up. "Andy Barker, P.I." is the man for the job of brightening your Thursday nights.

Variety says:

… Filled with knowing references to movies such as "Chinatown" and a top-notch supporting cast, "Andy Barker, P.I." should earn critical praise, but … might be too hip for the room, beginning with its Quinn Martin-like credit sequence …

The Hollywood Reporter says:

After Andy Richter quit serving as sidekick on "Late Night With Conan O'Brien," he starred in a Fox sitcom, "Andy Richter Controls the Universe." It was very funny, but it didn't last long. Then he did another Fox sitcom, "Quintuplets." It wasn't very funny, and it didn't last long either. With "Andy Barker, P.I." Richter goes back to making funny sitcoms that won't last long. … Jason Ensler, who directed the pilot, knows where to put the camera for maximum laughs. … …

Next week we get what many argue is the best of the six episodes, co-written by the great Jane Espenson.

9:30 p.m. Thursday. NBC.

    by prof. pop-cult

As I said in the last talkback: If this show actually does well, then NBC should NOT try to push it to become a full-season series (22 episodes). I believe this show works best as a mid-season series -- lower budget, fewer episodes, lower expectations in the ratings, but a better payoff for them in the end. If NBC decides to give the go-ahead for more episodes, then commission six more to air this summer. DON'T try to turn this into the next Office -- it won't work. Andy Barker PI appeals to a niche audience, much like Arrested Development, so expectations and budget should be adjusted accordingly to keep this show on the air.

The Truth Lies Somewhere in Between...

    by outrider304

Alright Herc, I will admit that my prediction wasn't spot on. I said this show would garner negative to lukewarm reviews. They have been more like positive to lukewarm reviews. I think the truth of this show may lie somewhere between your proclamation of "greatest comedy ever forged" and mine of biggest pile of corn riddled dookey in a long time. On my second prediction however, I stand solidly behind it. This show won't be on next season. They'll run the five if its lucky and then it will be gone. Knights of Prosperity was a good idea with some great jokes, but overall poor stay power. I don't see this as any better than that show. Perhaps without American Idol to compete against it will do slightly better, but this is no 30 Rock, and its certainly no Office. I think this is another red headed stepchild show doomed to the Herc curse of infinite love.

Actually, Herc kind of cut and paste to make his point

    by snowpuff

Actually, Herc's tremendous over hyping of the show and the backlash in the talkbacks makes perfect sense if you read the reviews rather than just cut and paste like Herc. From the reviews:

Entertainment Weekly SAID: "Andy Barker isn't as complete a comedy as Andy Richter Controls the Universe — the first three episodes feel like a series of very funny bits that have been welded together."

USA Today SAID: In some quarters, the idea of Andy Richter returning to TV as a crime-solving accountant is likely to be met with a shrug.

Variety SAID: Even so, the show's wry, media-savvy sensibility has historically been a tough sell on a mass scale, more suited to the less-demanding confines of O'Brien's latenight slot or cable than Thursdays on what NBC now less ambitiously calls "Comedy Night Done Right.

Hollywood Reporter SAID: With "Andy Barker, P.I." Richter goes back to making funny sitcoms that won't last long.

Et cetera. Except for the New York Times (Herc, do you also go by the name "Virginia Hefferan?") which gave a worshipful review, almost all of the reviews agree that a niche audience is going to love this and a lot of other people will say "meh." That seems to be exactly the sum of the parts from Herc's last posting on this.

    Snowpuff

    by outrider304

In my last post I said positive to lukewarm reviews for this show, but Snowpuff extrapolated on that a bit more than I did. I made that observation because despite Herc's selective quoting, the show is garnering decent reviews of the content, but the overall perception seems to be "funny, but overall not that engaging". No one seems to think this thing will get renewed. I'm suprised NBC greenlit this thing. Must have something to do with Conan's clout over there and his future position as the head of their latenight lineup. Wonder if he has a development clause in his contract.

    by ev1ldead

    -----------
    Hercules
I think it rivals “The Office” as perhaps best current live-action sitcom on the network grid.
    -----------
The Office best current live action sitcom? Perhaps after Scrubs, Earl and How I met your Mother. It`s still good, but this kind of humor is getting old fast. Ricky Gervais knew what he did when he ended the BBC-Original (and Extras) after 2 short seasons.
    ----------
    Herc
Let’s see if the critics harbor the same level of loathing as the talkbackers....
    -------------
So what? Most Critics also love dark, twisted and complex Dramas like The Shield, Deadwood, Rome, Nip/Tuck or Rescue Me or original humor like in Scrubs, How I met your Mother, Studio 60, Weeds or Entourage while you are spending most of your time praising (teeniegirl-) guilty pleasures like Buffy and Gilmore Girls or annoying bullshit like The Sarah Silverman Program. ;)

besides that. Andy Richter controls the Universe was pretty good. So I`l give his new show a chance.

    Comedy

    by outrider304

Today, the best comedy is on Cable. Entourage, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia are all shows that don't have to play it totally safe. The Office has overcome because of it's witty nature, and 30 Rock is okay because of Baldwin's one liners. Most network comedies have to keep it censored though these days, and because of it, they kind up going back to the same well of jokes. Andy Barker? A fat guy running with a sandwich? I've seen the same joke on Seinfeld with Newman, and the Knights of Prosperity with Rockefeller. This show could have been better if they went more extreme with it it and put it on HBO. Same reason Arrested Development never fully caught on, although that show was exceedingly well done (unlike this one).

nope ..."i am a stabbing robot. I am going to stab you." I must admit I watched the first 3 online and they were funny with a few good chuckles more than the average sitcom. However, 30 rock consistently makes me belly laugh. I know these two shows aren't in competition, but I wish 30 rock wasn't pulled during whatever they call this hiatus. It makes it look bad. I also don't mind Studio 60, I think it was finally in the neighborhood of finding itself. I'll miss it. I know it hasn't been axed for good yet, but it sure seems like it. It should've started off with more laughs with drama sprinkled in, as opposed to drama with laughs sprinkled in.

This Has Convinced Me To Take Another Look

    by topaz4206

I couldn't even finish episode 1 because I felt like my will to live was being drained, but I also don't like to feel I'm missing out on good laughs.I will try the Espenson episode and see if things are any better.

    pretty good but...

    by mthrndr

I remember a couple months ago when Herc posted about 30 Rock. I loved it immediately, but I would say about 90% of talkbackers thought it sucked. Now everyone thinks it's brilliant (which it is)...I guess it just takes certain talkbackers time to catch on. hopefully before it's too late.

    "Hurry, I'm cooking hamburger"

    by charlie murphy

that made me laugh. also the sandra bullock jabs. it definitely doesn't look like your average sitcom, does it? it has neat camera angles, lots of locations and a car chase. i wonder how much nbc is spending on this and if they'll give it more of a shot since conan is behind it.

E! Online: Veronica Mars has been cancelled.

    by pennsy

http://tinyurl.com/2vzvgm (the blog posting by Kristin Veitch, their TV columnist has since been taken offline, but either this is false outright, or The CW complained that she scooped them and made her take it down.

Guess Amy Sherman-Palladino, former Gilmore Girls showrunner was right: "Audiences will be as smart as you allow them to be." This redefines TEH SUCK if it's true.

Dull, not many huge laughs (aside from the Burger bit)

    by tallboy66

I think people are just saying they're funny due to the pedigire of the cast and producers, but, aside from one ore two jokes, this was limp wristed stuff. When did mild-mannered Andy Barker learn how to stunt-drive like that at the end? Yeah, I love Arrested Development too, but putting Buster in it doesn't make it great. Ever heard of the term "forced laughter"? That's probably it.

Better than Andy Richter Controls the Universe

    by mparke2

When I was in middle school, I loved that show. I watch it now on HDNET and it's not that funny. It's very cheesy.

However, this show is smart. It's adult and fun-loving. I don't see it lasting, but I'm willing to talk it up and increase viewership.

    by mikehoncho

I absolutely loved all of the episodes as well. Thank you for directing me to the site last week, I had a great time going through them all. The only thing I disagree with you on is that it is rivaling 30 Rock for best live action sitcom on TV.

Richter doesn't HAVE to carry this show...

    by jollysleeve

People remarking that the show will fail simply because Richter isn't magnetic enough to carry a show on his own, are making an irrelevant comment. This show is loaded with supporting players, so richter isn't even obligated to carry the whole thing on his back. I could just as well say that Seinfeld should've failed because Jerry Seinfeld isn't a terribly exciting presense by himself either.

    by zeframillen

i had no predeterminations about this show, and decided to give it a chance because of the reviews. i sat and watched the whole thing start to finish and i can honestly say that i chuckled maybe twice. and i think both were due to ole buster bluth saving the day. i'll give it another try but now i'm not so excited about it

    Too smart?

    by darth_nader

I actually loved the show. It reminds me of all those 70's detective shows. I would love to see a detective show where they don't have access to high powered super computers, bug any phone, or the ability to call in a SWAT team. That being said, I'll wait to pass judgement until we get 2-3 shows in. The first one will always have the best production values and writing.

I got so bored watching this that i quit half way

    by tonyd1411

Not exactly the big booming start to a new tv show that you would want to grab new viewers' attention. I think most people were bailing on this after the first 5 minutes of snoozefest. And I like Andy, I liked his last series, and I really wanted to like this one, but he is just not meant for lead roles.

I like it if it replaces Scrubs...

    by inwosuxred

If it is between the Office and 30 Rock, I'll never miss it. If it replaces Earl, I'll watch it too. If it is on a different night, I might miss it. I loved the freeze frame of Andy at the end of the show, and I loved when Buster said they didn't have Meet the Fockers. That alone made it better than any other shit-com that isn't on NBC Thursdays or HBO.

Way less funny as the Office or 30 Rock

    by drpain

What's up with Herc? This show was pretty boring I thought. Laughed a bit here and there. It just didn't do anything for me. Mark my words, this show gets canned by June.

I didn't think it was that funny

    by chorleyfm

But I really enjoyed it for what it was a fairly straight play on the old PI movies with some absurdity and jokes. Plus the thing looked great, better than a lot of movies (although the sitcom soundtrack spoiled it in a few places). Plus to Snowpuff, all those reviews you mention say the show is good-to-great, but that it might not be commercial enough, how does that make the review less glowing, it simply highlights the fact that America's taste fucking sucks.

    30 Rock?

    by ev1ldead

Without Baldwin it's just a by the numbers sitcom/comedy. Especially the black guy is just annoying. Who really thinks that this show is better than Scrubs, Earl, How i Met your Mother or even Entourage and Curb your Enthusiasm hopefully confuses it with Studio 60. That too isn`t better than some of them but has at least HBO Quality.

    Ratings are in!

    by outrider304

And Andy Barker pulled a smokin' 2.4 in the all important 18-49 category. Overall, it was tied for 11th place with an episode of "Family Guy" on Fox. I'm feeling confident in my prediction that this show isn't getting picked up. Those of you who like it, don't get too hooked, cause it doesn't look like its going to be around long.

Tied for 11th place? So there were

    by big jim

11 other shows on at the same time that did as well or better in the ratings? That's way down there. Or is that 11th place for the entire night, not just that time? Even so, I don't think I can name 11 other shows that were on last night.

    11th Place

    by outrider304

11th place for the night among the 5 major networks (NBC, ABC, CBS, FOX, CW). The only thing it beat in it's time slot was "Supernatural" on the CW. Granted, some of the ratings could have also been the fact that for the most part, there was no new TV on NBC. The Office was a rerun, and ER and 30 Rock are on hiatus. A new Scrubs (Andy Barker's lead in) only got a 2.8 (18-49). Raines got a 2.9. Regardless of time slot, more people watched Are you Smarter than a 5th Grader, Ugly Betty, reruns of the Office, and October Road, which ended up with a 5.8, probably due to the Grey's Anatomy lead in audience.

    by outrider304

That was horrible. We get 15 seconds of Pam's painting. At least it was worth seeing two of the best moments in Office history again - Jim slamming on the breaks and Jim slapping Dwight in the face. That was worth re-watching it.

Sure, it's no SCRUBS, but it'll be worth a shot. A 'promising' first episode more than anything.
