Mostow Goes Robo Again!! Disney Assimilates THE SURROGATES!!

Published at:  Mar 15, 2007 10:10:10 AM CDT

Merrick here...

Seems Disney is out to bring the graphic novel THE SURROGATES to the screen. Jonathan Mostow (U-571 and TERMINATOR 3) will direct. The project will reteam him with T3 scripters John Brancato and Michael Ferris.

"This is a grounded sci-fi premise, but there are big effects, and it's clear from '300' that people want to see different kinds of things, and this falls into that category"

...says the article you can see

HERE!!!

SURROGATES set in a futuristic world in which people live in isolation, and interact via robotic surrogates (an allegory for the Internet?).

Wasn't a similar premise used for an episode of SEAQUEST? I don't remember the plot exactly, but I seem to remember the sub going to a land where everyone is plugged into on-line gaming & interact virtually instead of actually.

Terminator 3 was a good film.

    by seph_j

And why have they mentioned '300' in the release? Apart from being graphic novels there doesn't seem to be a lot of similarity. Its like saying "300 has proven audiences want something different, so we are making an animated black & white film in dutch which chronicles the life of both Benny Hill and Princess Diana, but which takes place in an alternative universe where the chinese are actualy japanese, and Australia is now 20,000 miles further East. All because of the success of 300".

This exact plot was ripped from an episode of Arrested Development, guest starring Bob Einstein as George Bluth's surrogate.

    by thewumpus

The writer, Robert Venditti- Really nice guy. Congrats to him.
I'm hoping they'll treat this like a throwback to the old 80s disney movies, like Tron.
Bonus: Brett Weldele did the art for the book...He's the dude that handled art duties on Kelly's Southland Tales comic. I like that guy's stuff. It's a good book, if you find yourself in a comic shop you can probably still pick up the floppies for pretty cheap. Worth a read.

It may end up with the motion-capture CG studio that Robert Zemeckis and Disney are collaborating on. And it probably wouldn't materialize til like 2010. I read something like that on Jim Hill's website I thinks. Could be wrong. I read a lot of crap when I'm supposed to be working.

Hollywood - made of seriously out of touch clowns

    by doctor_sin

"300" is so visually "different" that we'll see about 300 films look exactly like it, because, gosh, Hollywood just has its reactionary finger on the pulse of pop culture. What kinds of isolated, insulated, sheltered lives have these execs lived where they are so out of touch with anything resembling uniqueness?

What about a movie which has a futuristic setting on another planet in which people live in isolation from the natural habitat, and interact with the native inhabitants via cloned surrogates (an allegory for already doing it?).

    Surrogates

    by cobbio

I agree with others who posted that "Breakdown" was a good film. That one sailed out of left field and slapped me upside the head. It wasn't classic, by any means, but it was a solid film.
"Terminator 3," on the other hand, was an trainwreck of truly staggering proportions. On television, I can't even force myself to watch five minutes of it. It's that bad. Mostow is gifted when it comes to visuals and action sequences, I'll admit, but his recent efforts have been miscasting and writing disasters. Anyone who disagrees should watch "Terminator" or "Terminator 2" back to back with "Terminator 3." Cameron was the only director fit for that series of films. "Terminator 3" was silly, overblown, and completely lacking in tension or interesting character moments. Mostow Ed Wooded it all the way.
That said, maybe the film was too big for him. Maybe he'll work better on a smaller budget with fewer cooks in the kitchen. If taken seriously, "The Surrogates" could be an cool futuristic drama. I hope so.

    Terminator 3

    by mrbong

is, to date, the only proper Terminator sequel. whilst T2 was visually stunning, it was a clumsy, convoluted political work - a typical example of the honeymoon period "let's all love each other" fallout from the end of the era of the Cold War. rubbish like "i swear i will not kill anybody" and "hasta la vista, baby" has nothing to do with the Terminator concept. and the "no fate but what we make" was a shallow, bullshit philosophy attempt to give the Terminator series some depth that, quite frankly, was not required. T3, however, gave a stark, bleak and realistic glimpse of man's amazing ability to construct his own demise , in either a limited or wide sense, and harked back to the fundamental principles of the first - no matter how you sneak up on a mirror, it will always stare you straight in the eye.

    by pwnedbystallone

Believe it or not T2 was a masterpiece and the reason was the story of a killing machine overcoming its programming to kill is a human story an a touching one at that. Yeah T3 was bleak in the last 30 seconds but the whole movie was an exercise in self-parody that destroyed the integrity of the her second one. "Talk to the hand" for God's sake? Rampant homophobia. Blatant sexism. We could use some post-Cold War touchy feely ness again. So fuck you mrbong you hawkish pessimist asshole.

    The Terminator series

    by affleckwasthebomb

I think T1 was showing Mans ability to bring about it's own downfall, T2 was to show us there is still hope for us all. T3 while fun was unnessacary(sp?) and added nothing to the Terminator mythos.
I think the T1&2 are the Terminator story 3 we all know was a cash cow.

    Pretty Good Graphic Novel

    by therealmoriarty

My favorite thing is how the detective in charge of the case has to solve it using his own body, and not the surrogate that all police use as standard issue. Since the "killer" is only attacking surrogates, it's up to the police to resort to their actual physical forms -- out of shape from underuse at this point -- to catch whoever's responsible.

Mostow's a good choice for this. Could be fun.

    Interesting concept

    by bubcus

Curious to see how it turns out.

I side with James Cameron's comment over T3 "not bad, I would have done it different, but not bad." I'm just glad they blew everything up.

U-571 was so-so. I'll stick with The Hunt for Red October for cool submarine movies.

Let's see how Jonathan Mostow does with this next film, I want to know if he's improving or if he's just going to give us moderately decent films.

Simply She/it, just was not intimidating enough. She didnt have the presence of Arnie or even Patrick. I fucking hate the scene were she gets pulled over by the police and she enhances her tits so the cop would be distracted. Thats sexist my friend, that just paints men as stupid fucking sex mad idiots, in fact speaking of that scene, the Terminator would probebly just of killed the stupid bastard for slowing down its mission.

    by connor187

A non-gender specific computer would only churn out male terminators because terminators are supposed to blend into the crowd. So making them look like fucking female super models would draw unecisary attention to itself. Fuck I better calm down I just remembered its only a movie, but a shit one at that.

I thought one of the spacer worlds in one of the post Foundation Trilogy books was like this. Humans were isolated from each other, using robots for any physical interaction, etc.
