George Romero and BRUISER

Published at:  Mar 07, 1999 2:03:12 PM CST

Here's a brief report on a George Romero project that I hadn't heard anything on. Take a look.... There are a couple of spoilers though...

Hey Harry:

Don't know if this has appeared on your radar yet, but there was a little
mention in The Hollywood Reporter this past week regarding the AFM and a
property named "BRUISER" that George Romero has written and is shopping around
with indie stalwart producer Ben Barenholtz (who helped launch the Coens with
"BLOOD SIMPLE") attached. I got a hold of this script through a friend about
a year ago, and it's pretty darn cool. It's a metaphysical, arty horror
thriller [SPOILERS A-COMIN'] about the ultimate wimp at a magazine who has his
face cast in plaster for the sensitive wife of his nemesis boss -- and then
the wimp wakes up the next day with a blank white mask for a face. But this
loss of facial identity suddenly awakens his repressed dark side and he goes
on a massive revenge spree, killing everyone who's ever dissed him, with a
spectacular fireworks massacre scene at the end. It's a bit on the artsy,
metaphysical side for ol' George, but it was a blast to read and quite well-
written. Don't know if this'll get made, but my friend passed on that Romero
was trying to avoid going the studio route and do this totally independently
for about $5-6 Million. If you can use this, I am...

    Get a Grip!

OK Kubrick's death is a tragedy, but he's ONLY ONE GUY!!! I mean, he's made some great films, but so have plenty of other people. Including George Romero, by the way. Hey, guess what?? Kubrick, Spielberg, Lucas, Romero, Scorsese, Malick, Raimi, Cronenberg, Cameron, Friedkin, and every other single director making films today will be DEAD... DEAD DEAD DEAD!!!! and guess what else... cinema will still LIVE without them!!!! Because if it doesn't, then what's the point of this site and all the people who create, make, watch, enjoy and love films TODAY?!?! Saying Kubrick is a master and his death a tragedy is one thing... Saying that cinema is dead because of it is an insult to him and every other director.

    Cinema is FAR from dead

    by morgus

It's sad that Kubrick has died, but to say that cinema died with him is to say that there are no good filmmakers to follow his lead, that no films since "Full Metal Jacket" are of any consequence. Cinema survived the recent passing of Akira Kurosawa. It will survive this. As for Romero, I'd love to see him churn out one last masterpiece before he, too, is gone.

    That's all bosh...

Hasn't the theatre been dying for about 500 years now? Last time I checked there were still a few good productions every now and then. There are geniuses, but no one is indispensible.

    one last classic...

    by mckracken

well it certainly looks like this Romero guy's got a few films in him before his final hour. Why is he shopping around looking for a home for "Bruiser" when he's working on his "ballz to-da-wallz" Resident Evil flick? George Romero: PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE MAKE "TWILITE of the LIVING DEAD" (and dont do a hack job like "DAY of the Dead")... :O)McK

Sounds like the The Mask with gore

    by the cleaner

Do we need a low budget Mask that skips the comedy in favor of mindless killings? I love Romero but this sounds pointless.

The world needs a new Romero film

    by pixie

I just hope he's able to get this done. I heard soewhere that the Resident Evil thing didn't quite pan out. I could use a cool Romero film about right now. The guy is just great. He screws up now and again, but when he's good, there's no one in the straightforward, gore horror film genre that can touch him.

BRUSIER to start filming 19 July

    by bellboy

Just wanted to stop in and let you be among the first to hear that George is back in the saddle again directing. Principle photography for BRUISER, from Romero's original script, is to begin 19 July, in Toronto.
If you would like any further information, write me. I will try to keep everyone as updated on this film as I am.
