HIGHLANDER: THE ANIME Has A Trailer!
And the mysteriously named “H” has sent me a link to it, so you can check it out.
This is the same director who made NINJA SCROLL and VAMPIRE HUNTER D: BLOODLUST, so that should give you some idea of how seriously they take this as a relaunch in the world of anime. They’re throwing some big guns at it.
And look at it this way... it’s got to be better than that HIGHLANDER: THE SOURCE which is floating around there in the ether right now, unreleased but already despised by fandom. Right?

...first.

...and the events happened in real time.

Where Kurgan kidnaps Conner's chick and plays chicken with oncoming traffic. Clancy Brown is one of the BEST movie villains ever from Highlander to Shawshank Redemption. As for Highlander: The Source, the movie has its ups and downs, quite a few plot holes, and the villain talks too much for his own good, but all in all it's OK. Apparently the producers are still in post production so hopefully we'll get a better edit when it comes out officially. As it stands, Endgame is the high point for the series after the first Highlander. The source could be good if they somehow make the villain not talk so much, if at all....
-
Until the sequel, that is. And the TV series. And the subsequent direct-to-video sequels that cross over with the TV series. And the anime. You know what? I just got off the phone with the at-the-time-quite-good premise for this whole franchise and it would like people to stop fucking it in every dead and thoroughly decomposed orifice it has. Thank you.
-
One great film followed by an infinite amount of shittiness. Ah, wonderful........
-
There was only one decent Highlander movie, and even that was poorly made and ridiculously boring. Preach it like it is, Childe Roland.
-
Well, they don't say anything, because they ain't.
-
"It was shit!"
-
...that they cast a Scot as a Spanish Egyptian with a Samurai fetish and cast a mushmouthed wherever-the-heck-near-France-he's-from guy as the Highlander. That silliness aside, I still have a soft spot for any film scored by Queen.
-
Always bugged me about anime.
-
im a sexy bitchhhhhhh
-
Like 99% of every anime: Cool designed backgrounds, shitty character design and even worse animation. I fucking hate anime!
-
Is that the Highlander movie with the two guys who wrote "Feast" were signed on to write?
-
I don't know what was shown online but it sure as hell wasn't a trailer. Maybe it was a scene from a convention showing. But I still want to see it. Some of the story ideas actually sounded cool. And Duncan is the only real Highlander, in my opinion.
-
Why do people keep messing with this dead horse? Give a little CPR to Star Trek before it goes totally tits-up
-
was an international production that they filmed in Prague or something and finished filming in late 2005. I guess there were some postproduction problems and they're still trying to find a distributor. Anyway, it's about a group of immortals who go on a quest for the Immortal version of the Holy Grail. Unlike the last one, which was saddled with the passing of the movie torch from Conor to Duncan (think the Highlander version of Star Trek: Generations), this one has more Joe and Methos (which can only be a good thing). Hell, I'd see a Highlander movie just about Methos - he was such an awesome character. If you can see beyond some of the early 90s cheesiness, there was some good stuff on the show. I definitely liked it better than the movies, plus the fact that Adrian Paul can actually act a little bit, unlike Christopher Lambert.
-
I think it is, it's been along time since I've followed any Highlander news. I'm not even sure which Highlander they are following but anyways...interesting look to the trailer, I might catch it, I used to be the biggest Highlander nerd in the galaxy now it's like eh
-
And it blows. There are a couple redeeming qualities here and there, but basically, it's Highlander II all over again. It takes they mythology in a whole new direction, albeit compatible with the series mythology. It has a decidedly different feel to it as well. If anyone wants to see it, it's on most of the torrent engines. If you want to get a legal copy try the all dvd Canadian or Russian site. It was released by a legit Russian distributor very recently.
-
I remember back when they announced the Source, they said it was going to be the first in new Highlander trilogy. So much for that, huh? Maybe they can do a time travelling thing and negate the last season of the show and undo the killing of Richie.
-
Sometimes I think Highlander would have been a far better franchise had they followed their own rules...there can be only one. The first film, despite 80's cheesiness, was awesome. It was original, developed an infinitely explorable mythology, rocked a Queen-centric soundtrack, and had awesome sword fights. The 2nd one--we like to pretend it never happened since it was possibly the worst film ever made. Plan 9 From Outer Space was Hamlet next to this turd. The 3rd one tried to get back to what worked the 1st time, and just wasn't entirely successful. It was a mediocre film. Then the tv series came out, and more often than not, was a good show, particularly when they explored the loopholes of the rules and answered questions audiences might have asked (ex. can an immortal have children before they die the first time, who was the first immortal, how can an immortal trapped in a child's body hope to compete in the game, is there a way to turn mortals into immortals, are there any permanent injuries an immortal can suffer, will quickenings lead to major changes to an immortal's personality, etc.?) Also, you got great characters like Methos and Amanda. The crossover film was very Star Trek Generations, and personally, I thought it was pretty mediocre. I saw no reason to have to make one of the highlanders die. If either character died, you had to know you'd piss off at least half you fanbase. People who only liked the film and hated the series would find Conner's death a negation of his being worthiest of The Prize. And if they killed Duncan, you'd piss off the series fans. It's just stupid. But what baffles me--and I include the Star Trek and The Crow franchises here as well--when you have such a strong fanbase, how is it possible to consistently give the audience crap? All these franchises have been dug into the ground because of incompetence. You hand the story over to any die hard fan of any of these franchises, and you'd find far better ideas than what some Hollywood moron gets paid for, which always suck horribly.

RECENT anime is real fucking pretty and REALLY. WELL. MADE. Not just 'a background with crappy characters'. The animation quality is about 802037293856% better than it was 10 years ago, when most of this '99% of anime' you speak of was made. Watch something recent and maybe you'll see that you're making generalizations based on old data. That's like saying, "All computer special effects suck. It's all choppy like in 'Johnny Mnemonic'". Sorry to get heated, but I watch a lot of anime, and what they've been doing is fucking fantastic. Watch the newest episode of Bleach, you'll see what I'm talking about. And I mean 118, not whatever they're at on Cartoon Network.
-
This Highlander thing does kinda look crappy. Never liked that style. Ninja Scroll was cool, but it doesn't do it for me. Gimme Clamp's character designs anyday.
-
Death Note rules all.
-
so I'll watch this all lubed up and ready to go. The guy has yet to disappoint me.
-
I think the reason they've been killing Trek is they only got half of Roddenberry's formula right. Roddy was about great action with a moral to the story. The new generation of Trek boys forgot the action, and went all "moral" on us. I recently watched the ENTIRE 2nd season of "Enterprise" (which was NOT easy) and every episode just hammered the "diversity" message into the ground. They finally realized by season 3 that they were losing fan base, and tried the action-heavy Xindi storyline to compensate, but by then it was too late. In a nutshell, modern sci-fi writers all want to have Roddy's morals, but they get so intent on pushing their agenda, everything else is lost. I felt the same on "V for Vendetta." All lessons, no action. By the time Parliament blows . . . who cares? They really want to bring Trek back to life? Make a WAR movie set in the Trekiverse. Cool.
-
I like Ninja Scroll despite the character designs.
-
Just watched this the other day on-line at quicksilverscreen.com. One of the worst films in history, honestly. What's really annoying is they do these weird ass speed up and slow down shots for no apparent reason at all, and they do it constantly. The fights are terrible, like they choreographed them 5 minutes before they shot the fights. I'm a really big fan of the concept, the first movie, the series, and Endgame, and I was bitterly disappointed by this awful movie.
**SPOILERS BEYOND**
In the near future the world REALLY sucks, think Road Warrior with less desert and more homeless people. Duncan's wife leaves him because they can't have children and then spends her time in this movie trying to find The Source which will somehow let them have a baby. The villian is so incredibly bad it is beyond belief. Both Joe and Mithos die, and Joe dies like a punk ass bitch. LAME! -
I disagree Doc_Strange; for me it's the "Feel the Stag Scene" the whole thing is so unintentionally homoerotic that it is almost impossible not to laugh.
-
I'm not a big fan of Highlander, and I hated Ninja Scroll. Meh.
-
That whole riffin' off the Alan Dean Foster novelization of ANH, to annuling all the prior Highlander films, etc. I personally enjoyed Highlander 3 - The Apology.

Just had to bring that up. What I think Highlander really needs is a reboot. Start again fresh. If anything, do a remake or just start all over with new characters having no relation to the Mcleods. I think with the fight choreography we see today as well as having a good screenwriter, the series could be great once again.
-
with Christopher Walken. A Highlander sequel done right. Itself then followed by crap sequels
-
I would rather have a buffalo take a diarrhea dump in my ear than watch this fermented crap. "A New Quest for Freedom"... ooh, sounds high concept... and the title? "Highlander: The Anime"... how imaginative... BLAH !!!
-
how many frackin maclouds are there anyways ???
-
That was a nice font they used for the logo. And the gradient filter really snazzed it up. A nice lense flare would've just quickened the hell out of it.
-
You prefer Clamp? For something like this??? Fuck that! And as for all these statements about 'bad animation' what that trailer looked 'bad'? That looked kick-ass! Boo hoo, the Japs don't use squash and stretch and staging on the same level that American animation uses... so what? They do their animation as imitations of live action film, and cut the bullshit with the whole 'animated must mean more movement to keep shit interesting' philosophy. That's good and all with Disney films, no problem, great stuff, but it doesn't fit in with more serious stuff like this here highlander for instance. No that you couldn't, but then I'd keep thinking 'cartoon,' instead of 'realism'... get me? Because real people don't move around and twitch and shit as much as you see characters do in American animation. If it's not your thing and you need that animated feel to keep you looking at the screen, then well, too bad... THe Japs do great stuff even with way smaller budgets than American studios, and as someone said yeah the really really old stuff is terrible in quality by comparison. But check out much of the amazing stuff that's been coming out over the last few years! Anyway, I don't know a thing about Highlander, but if this is by Kawajiri I'm getting it because it practically guarantees great action sequences! And hopefully he'll be getting on to doing that new Ninja Scroll movie that's rumoured, the TV series felt kinda flat...
-
They should get that NZ crew that does the Power Rangers series to do a reimagining of HighLander. They could be a team of Highlanders from the various highlands of the world. One could come from the Himalayas, and others from Kilimonjaro etc... They could fight together to defeat the evil Zeus residing on Mount Olympus, the highest of all highlands!
-
Two things that should have left well enough alone after their greatness appeared on the silver screen. Very few sequels are better than the orignal. Road Warrior, Rambo, Lethal Weapon 2, and ESB are a few examples. Not only were the sequels to these series inferior, they just plain sucked to the point that everyone agrees Highlander 2 never happened.
-
...right up until "Rambo." You really liked that better than First Blood? I mean, First Blood kicked all kinds of ass and Rambo really undid a lot of the great work Stallone had done with the character. He went from a flawed and vulnerable yet totally relatable killing machine to a Hollywood cliche resembling the bastard love child of Chuck Norris and Arnold Schwarzennegger. I'm with you on all the others you mentioned though, and would add Wrath of Khan and Godfather II to the list of sequels that exceeded their predecessors (even if only slightly in Godfather II's case).
-
could create so many shitty movies. It's unprecedented.
-
Movie that is.
-
Rambo rocks. RII and RII were pure action movies with some political undertones. As sequels I must say that they did work. Now where did I put those vials of HGH....?
-
And I disagree that the Matrix should had been only one movie. Reloaded & Revolutions were different, but right up there with the original in many ways. This looks hot. Hell, remember the highlander cartoon? Oh, right, they only aired it at 4:00 am on Sundays mornings. Sorry. Forgot.
-
Star Trek 2. You were right Childe Rolande. Khaaaaaan!!!! It's not that I hated First Blood. I loved it, and I loved RFBpt2. I thought the second was slightly better. Maybe because I was old enough to see that on the big screen, and I only saw uncut First Blood on VHS when video first came out. An aside, my neighbors had the first VCR on the block when they cost about $800. They're a black family in a town that was almost all white at the time. Remember when Rambo escapes from jail, and steals the bike? Here's an exact quote from one of the girls in the family. "Get up nigger, you ain't hurt." I still laugh my ass off to this day thinking about that.
-
this'll rock like i rocked yo fat mamma's huge Kathy Bates-esque cellulite-ridden ass last night while yo pappa was in the living room watching corry norry whilst beating off to vera duckworth. ninja scroll is the bollocks. looking forward to this sique. sick!
-
Best nose pick, boogie in the food, actor of all time!
-
That ruined the films and the series..comes a cartoonnnn!
Actually looks fun. I always dig Highlander goodness -
If I remember from the Madhouse panel at an anime con this is supposed to be called Highlander: Vengeance
-
Everyone keeps poking fun at the title...but apparently they were too busy NOT watching the trailer to notice. It's called "Highlander: Search For Vengeance." Not "Highlander: The Anime." Jesus...pay attention. You've got to actually watch the WHOLE trailer, not just enough to make fun of it.
-
And this trailer kicked ass, of course. Bloodlust & Ninja Scroll were freaking amazing.
-
Ninja Scroll had amazing art but the voice acting was horrible. I would have preferred they spoke in Klingon with subtitles.
-
Looking back, this franchise strikes me as a potentially brilliant piece of work that just never broke out of mediocrity. I really thought that with more creative control over The Source, the filmmakers and Adrian Paul would have gotten it right. From what people have said, guess not. I'm not sure why most of the Highlander things have been clusterfucks. The one thing about the series DVDs, you always had David Abramowitz telling it like it is. If he thinks the episode fell flat, he'll say so. If he thinks the actors phoned it in, he'll call them on it. You gotta admire the guy's honesty, but he does sometimes come off as a stubborn, arrogant bastard. Adrian Paul doesn't seem to be that easy going either. Maybe it's just the combination of personalities and circumstances that just kept this franchise from ever truly achieving greatness. It's too bad, really.
-
Not really, but they both have Connery. Seriously, the first film wasn't even that good. Passable, like the original Terminator.
