In 1980, ABC had “Taxi” and “Soap” back to back on Wednesday nights, but most of its schedule was driven by tits, ass and Aaron Spelling. “Three’s Company,” “Hart To Hart,” “Vega$,” “The Love Boat,” “Fantasy Island,” and Charlie’s Angels.” That was ABC.
“Bosom Buddies” arrived on ABC the same year as the completely horrible Ted Knight vehicle “Too Close For Comfort.” Because "Bosom's" title was a tit joke and because it aired on ABC, it was too easy to dismiss it as another turd float in ABC’s T&A garbage parade.
But “Bosom Buddies,” the tale of a pair of fledgling ad men who wore dresses so they could live in a dirt-cheap women-only hotel, was funny stuff. The cross-dressing business got tired in a hurry, of course, but the writers came to de-emphasize it fairly early on and pretty much eliminated it by the start of season two.
The series was created by a young writer named Chris Thompson. He came out of “Laverne & Shirley,” but later spent years on “The Larry Sanders Show” (still arguably the best live-action American sitcom of all time) before he created the acclaimed (if short-lived) Jay Mohr movie-industry comedy “Action.”
And of course "Bosom" starred the amazing Tom Hanks. It put Hanks on many of our pre-"Splash" radars, and I remember thinking then that he was destined for stardom. He was so great, in fact, that his greatness kind of spilled over onto co-star Peter Scolari; at the time I thought they were both due for hugeish things. (And Scolari - while never making an impact on the big screen - did spend the next two decades working nonstop in television, notably scoring Emmy nominations for three of his five seasons on “Newhart.”)
I also thought the great Holland Taylor was hilarious as their ad agency boss.
