Here's a brief look at COBRA EFFECT

Published at:  Mar 05, 1999 5:38:44 PM CST

We had a piece on this film a couple of weeks ago that basically talked about how the film was in the script stage.... well... now we have more... Read for yourself...

yO HARRY, MICROVERSE BARON KARZA HERE.

here's the dirt on COBRA EFFECT:

THE STORY: Alice is a young forensic detective who finds the Cobra Virus, a
brain virus that causes its victims to develop a taste for flesh before
hemorrhaging to their death. With the help of veteran Littleberry, she
searches for the man who
engineered the virus to stop his rampage of death.

we've already seen this story--it's OUTBREAK. The difference between the two
is that this tale has an actual villain who engineered the plague, who's taken
out in the end. Act II is spent watching the virus spread (OUTBREAK, anyone?)
as our heroes detect the clues that lead them to the source (OUTBREAK,
anyone?) is pretty familiar. Script has a different scale, though, as The
Cobra Effect takes place in New York City--think Outbreak meets The Siege.

all in all, I was less than impressed. Let's hope even hollywood is not so
derivative to greenlight this one.

    cOBRA eFFECT

    by opium_groove

Seeing as how this film is re-titled directly after Richard Preston's novel...will it have any of the elements that Outbreak lacked of The Hot Zone..?

    cobra Event????

    by dmann

this is an AWESOME book, called the cobra event, from the little snake jack in the boxes the villian uses to distribute the virus...anyhow, it was written by the same guy who wrote "THE HOT ZONE", the nonfiction book that was plagairized to make OUTBREAK... its a great read....and not a half bad detective story

I've never commented on your posts before, although the size and quantity of postings you offered frequently annoyed me. But so what-- its a free country. What is laughable is your self-righteous send-off posted on every article. If what you say about the threats is true, I'm sorry-- I don't condone that. But as you ride into the sunset, remember-- you're no martyr. And few will miss you. But come back anytime (with fewer, shorter posts). adeiu.

The Cobra Event = Biological Tom Clancy

    by knouri

Meaning Drama through accurate science, and how scary the real thing is.

First, if they change the name of the story for the movie... Sheesh. As far as the story goes, it really is a great story. After reading the book, I really wanted to see it in movie form. But only if the movie is handled by people who will take the source material (the book) seriously and not chop it up into some schlock. From what the person who sent in this script report, it sounds like the first script treatment may have done just this. If you read the book, the whole "flesh craving" deal makes plenty of sense, but if the script author doesn't put any effort into explaing why (there is real science behind it) then it would come off as derivitive and stupid. There are so many cool bits and pieces in the story that I can't even get into. God knows that they just did this as the plot synopsis.

    A)Julia Robert = Scientist
    B)Madman with virus
    C)Scientist tracks down Madman

Which is so far from the book that it's not even funny. I'd be forever saddened if this project got halted because some loser can't convey the essence of the book.

    The Book Sucked

    by chilipalmer

The book was a poorly written, unoriginal piece of crap. Which is quite a shame since the Hot Zone was excellent and outbreak certainly wasn't bad. I'm hoping Richard Preston doesn't get his hands anywhere near the screenplay so this film doesn't suck.

It's like Outbreak meets 28 Days Later.
