Are They Finally Making The FORREST GUMP Sequel?!
Hey, everyone. ”Moriarty” here.
And if so... why?!?
”It’s been thirteen years since Forrest Gump first ran into theaters, and now it looks like America’s favorite chocolate loving mental deficient may be back for a sequel. Forrest Gump II isn’t a new idea, Paramount has been kicking it around since the original movie made a bajillion dollars, and in 2001 they even hired Forrest Gump writer Eric Roth to pen a sequel screenplay.
An absolutely reliable, unfortunately anonymous source, contacted me tonight with the latest scoop on Forrest’s impending return. It seems that old 2001 Eric Roth screenplay is being dragged out of development hell for another look by Gump producers Steve Tisch and Wendy Finerman. Remember that the first Forrest Gump movie was based on a novel by Winston Groom. Roth’s sequel script was based on Groom’s followup novel, “Gump & Co”. “Gump & Co” takes place several years after “Forrest Gump” and finds Forrest’s shrimping business failed and Jenny dead, leaving Forrest a single unemployed father. As you’d expect, Gump still stumbles through more important historical events. In this case it’s a cavalcade of history from the 80s and 90s. He even meets Tom Hanks.”

Damn, I was hoping they were gonna make the porno...
-
That will be the title
-
Worst. Sequel. Ever!
-
"From the director of 'Cats and Dogs'! Based on a true story!"
By the way, if Gump was a horror movie, we would have heard about a remake instead. -
A dozen years later and the popularity of that schmaltzy crap still mystifies me. Summer of 1994 was Pulp versus Gump - you tell me as i'm hideously biased - which has aged better?
-
Just get the guy from the Weird Al Gump video, he was pretty funny..
-
Can we convince al-Quaeda that Hollywood is a viable target?
-
...and I still can't decide whether it's supposed to be a satire. Such a strange tone, that one. Are they applauding Gump for his stupidity or taking the piss?Or maybe (just maybe) I'm thinking about this film a bit too much.
-
God I hated that retarded movie. To add insult to injury, it beat Pulp Fiction for best picture.
-
...and call it Forrest Gump 2: Gump Happens. I think that's how it goes.
-
And that's all I have to say about that.
-
At least he'd have work again.
-
We need "Raging Gump" where Forrest, in the midst of despair, punches the walls of his Miami Jail Cell, screaming "Why?! Why?! Why?! Why?! WHY?!" Leave this alone. The horse is DEAD.
-
. . . but hoped and hoped it wasn't true. I heard Forrest gets caught up in chase scene involving a white Bronco. Unfortunately, I'm not joking.
-
One of my most hated films ever. The popularity of this piece of offensive propaganda is lost on me. There is not one redeeming feature to this shit-fest, I am only surprised it took this long to spawn a sequel.
-
Gump!
-
...he needs to have his testicles places in a garlic press. Seriously. There's just no fucking need.
-
one thing, I saw this in the United States and all the reviwers fawned over it, so when I returned to Ireland after my holiday in the United States I was dumbfounded by the critical mauling this got in the british and Irish press(treacly cornball, sentimental american mush was the response). The media over here even suggested that Paramount deliberatly over inflated the box office figures. So what I want to know is this. Is this a great film or not. and if not why did the media fall over this movie. I think we should have a debate on whether Forrest gump was all that great or not. Seriously.
-
He was on the first plane to crash into the WTC. One of the hijackers had a change of heart and was about to turn around but Forrest said something folksy and it made hi go through with it.
-
Can't see how the film would be any better, unless they scrap vast chunks of the story and start again.
The whole conceit of him meeting Tom Hanks was awful.
-
Hearing that kind of description is just another variation on the same old reason of why 90% of sequels today are not the least bit necessary -- that sounds like little more than a weaker retread version of the original. C'mon, "he goes thru history and meets even more historical figures"?? There's a point when it just comes pop culture masturbatory parody (that's right bitches, I'm officialy coining that phrase right now ;)
I would hate to see them so desperate for a sequel that they'd make it out of THAT. Shit, I'm dissapointed to hear that idea was even the basis for the actual follow up novel, that sounds much more like what would've been a studio's "original" attempt at sequelizing an unnecessary property. In my experience in the literary world, it's not very often (or at least not NEARLY as often as it is with film) that a sequel book turns out a bad and tired idea.
And I have to agree on the wording about Jenny being dead, it sounds funny as is. Umm, yea, we kinda ALREADY knew Jenny was dead? Fuck, let's try some spoiler tags next time, huh?? :P lol -
"I think we should have a debate on whether Forrest Gump was all that great or not."
I defer to Louis Armstrong, who famously said, "If it sounds good, it IS good." Did *you* like the movie? As for me, I liked it pretty well. -
I was blown away by, the verve, the wit, the imagination, the fantastic dialog. Dont any of you fucking procks move or I'll excute ever motherfucking last one of you. Then bang straight in it Dick dale and then Jungle boogie. Awesome. Qts trilogy(dogs, fiction and Jackie brown). are the best films he will ever make. Time has not been good to Jackson or Revalota for that matter. I have Tried to watch true romance. utter mess.
-
Yeah it's cheesy and it's meant to be cheesy. But the way Hanks carries the movie proves he's one of the all-time greats. Some of the historical references are a little stupid and overkill but others are done well, like at the end when Jenny says she's sick and it's some kind of virus but the doctors don't know what it is, the fact that you pretty much know it's HIV is cool. Gary Sinise as Lt. Dan is also fantastic.
-
My thought for the day. Thanks! :)
-
God, no thankyou
-
Jenny Remix coming at cha! Forest Gump was a nice movie. However, watching it again, I felt that it was way too contrived and saccharine for my present tastes. They did a good job at showing the Vietnam war which like all war was horrific. But then they show Loo-tenant Dan and Gump healed up and happy at the end of the movie. Maybe it is because of this time and the Vet Hospital scandal, but I feel that vets are generally pissed on by the govt even to this day. What will Gump II talk about? How gas was not expensive? How the 90's recession was not that bad? Anyways, enough of my rant.....My Lovely Lady Gump!
-
in terms of ambition and scale it is the best film Zemeckis has ever made. And in terms of acting too, it is Hanks best performance. It is a very beautiful film. Sinise, an actor who i had never heard before was a revelation in that movie. All the actors in that movie delivered career best performances. That scene where hanks is standing at the grave of his wife saying I love you jen-any is heartbreaking as is the scene where he says good by to his mother. So to answer your question, yes I did like it. like it enough to it twice. I think it was an outstanding film from a brilliant filmmaker.
-
You're kidding, right?
-
The first one was dumb. This will be dumber. There's a "Dumb & Dumber" joke waiting to happen I just can't find it.
-
...but shouldn't he still be in good shape with all of his Apple shares (I don't remember how Apple was doing in the 90's)?
-
Any movie that wins an Oscar in a major category forfeits the right to have a sequel. Why tarnish a good name?
-
I saw this in theaters when i was 12, and i remember the place being packed to the point where people were sittin in the aisles. And in the beginning of the movie, when the kids throw rocks at young Forest, and he takes one to the dome, this old lady sittin next to me went "ooo" and "oh" with each rock, and kept hittin' me with her damned old pointy elbows. she (and whoever she was with) left the movie shortly thereafter, my young ribs singing in joy.
-
Gump does whatever he is told to do, and becomes wealthy and loved. Jenny is independent and embraces the (angry! black! angry black!) counter-culture, so the whore must die.
-
A sequel sounds like a horrible idea. Leave it be. How could he go poor after Lt. Dan invested their money in Apple?
STUUUUUUUPID!!!! Leave Forest alone.
Stupid is as Hollywood Does. -
What you described there is my biggest problem with the film. That's obviously the message, but it is meant seriously or is it a satire? It seems like you'd have to be retarded to tell the story seriously, but if it's a piss-take, why is Jenny such a drone? She's kind of independent, but basically she just follows whatever fashionable fad comes along next. She's just as dumb as Gump in her own, and also nasty since she doesn't even tell FG about his kid until she's dying.Like I said, I've been thinking about this too much.
-
Saluki, I hadn't ever thought of it like that, that's pretty damn funny in an ironically true kind of way...
-
Rule of thumb most of the time in the movie world you do know what your going to get when i come to the sequal, with the exception of about 10 film most sequal are SHIT. Why do they need to make a sequal for this film ?
-
Was in the toilet. Jobs wasn't running the company anymore and they were sturggling with the Power PC chip and I think they even had other companies make "Mac Clones". The stock was like down to around 12. It started to turn around when Jobs came back and Bill Gates bailed them out by giving them some cast. Not to mention the success of first the iMac and then of course the iPod. Jobs really did bring that company back from the brink. -
You never know what you're going get until you stick your finger in their bottoms.
-
...John Waters MUST direct! And let's get Patch Adams 2 while we're at it!
-
The entire movie's progress was made by moving from fad to fad, no matter how significant that fad may be. So it is no surprise that Jenny hits all the points. Hippie? Check. Whore? Check. Drug Abuse? Check. Single Mom? Check. HIV? Check. All the film would need would be that angry Black Panther to be her real boyfriend, and every fear for the Blonde, Blue Eyed, God Fearing Southern Lady would have been complete. MEANWHILE: Gump is sent to China. LOL. LOL. LOL.
-
Stupid is as stupid does, Brother.
-
Saluki, Franklin, do either of you think that perhaps this movie is not about right versus left explicitely, but rather simply a commentary (or lack thereof) on a few decades of American culture? Gump was kind of blessed with an intellect incapable of assigning any kind of deep bias to the events sorounding his life. Bad things happen to the arguably right wing lieutenant and liberal whore, but both are simply reaping what they sowed. The movie is supposed to be from Gump's perspective and he doesn't hold an ethical or political context for anythng that happens. If I find any kind of underlying moral, its that we need to concern ourselves with what to do in the now, and not spend too much energy worrying about the past (i.e. what we can't change). Do I agree with that? I don't know, but I think thats the simplified perspective of a movie about a simple minded man.
-
WHY is the question here indeed, Moriarty.
-
Who the hell has been asking for a Gump sequel? Can we locate this guy and beat the shit out of him?
-
Im starting a new Talkback catchphrase.
-
Gump cuts through a bunch of sandpeople with a lightsaber. Gump is a badass! "Slash Forrest, slash!"
-
Old Lt. Dan turned on God, thus becoming a sleazy drunk in the ghetto. Only after accepting God back into his life could he cut his hair, become uber-rich, walk upright, and "settle down" to marry a woman like any God-fearing man damn well should, living his life in tranquility and peace. MEANWHILE: The whores dies.
-
Indy runs into Gump. Together they fight Nazis and uncover the lost box of golden chocolates that will bring Jenny back from the dead. "I love you Jenny. Life is given by a box of chocolates."
-
have Forrest chain unsuspecting commuters to the bench and force them to mutilate themselves in order to better understand world events.
-
What happened to all the stock dividends from Apple Computer?
Maybe he should foreclose on Bubba's Momma's house. -
you don't ever see it on tv, or hear people talking about it. If they could re-do the 1994 Oscars, they'd give Best Pic to either Pulp Fiction or Shawshank.
-
"Whatcha gonna do brother when Gump-mania runs wild on you?"
-
with anchorite on this one. There wasn't anything unrealistic about the repercussions of Jenny's life, and I think his understanding behind her motivation is also spot-on. On a related note, I never associated Dan's turn around too deeply with a religious conviction, but I always saw that he had indeed regained a sense of worth, and more importantly hope. If religion was the reason, (I suppose the movie does put it as "peace with God") more power to him. Damn, I kind of forgot how interesting this movie could be...
-
The movie was not, but since it was based on a satirical book it may come off as confusing in that regard. The book was more like a modern Candide.
-
I would argue the spread of AIDS had less to do with free love, and more along the lines of the government ignoring it while boatloads of coke snorting Wall Street wannabes thought they were immune to the freakin' apocalypse. *shrug* Simply put, the piece is nearly a checklist. The fact that Jenny meets no positive or moral people outside of Gump, while Gump of course starts a cult of runners that would likely die by his sword, rings far too hollow. Still, the running sequence might be my favorite. For once, Gump is not following anyone's lead or being told what the hell to do. He simply does it, and maybe even enjoys it, finding a freedom he may not have known was his all along.
-
Forrest "falling" into major moments in history was charming, but it may seem to gimmicky in a sequel. This is one story that was told in totality the first time out. DO NOT MAKE THIS MOVIE. I can't imagine Tom Hanks wants to do this.
-
So, what was the aim of the book's satire? Was it the culture or counter-culture of America? Both, perhaps? I haven't read it but now I'm intrigued. Do you recommend it?
-
i was maybe 14 when "Gump and Co" came out, and i was first in line to buy the book. it was total garbage from page 1. if i remember, it actually starts with the Gump character saying something like, "I saw that thar Tom Hanks movie they did about me. Wasn't that great, they messed up a few things." and the historical run-ins were just cringworthy.
the movie just works where the books don't. i think most of it (other than the Tom Hanks factor) is the pacing of it all. in the movie, the clever history stuff gets mashed together in chunks throughout, serving as almost commercial breaks to the story. it really works. there's some cheese in the beginning and end of the movie, but the 15 minute portion of Gump running across the country is still some great moviemaking. -
Or maybe that should be Ravolting. As in the actor Formerly know as John Travola. either way his movie career these days is. Ravolting! its a spin on the name travolta.
-
Looking back, I believe my enjoyment would have been improved a few fold if the piece simply had given Gump a true character arc. Switch the parents. Jenny is the one from the safe and fun Mother, while Gump is from the broken and tattered Father. However, War comes along, and they separate. Gump still becomes heroic, but more cynical, while Jenny still becomes destructive by her own will (instead of circumstances). Watching these two meet again around the shrimping time, and actually growing directly from each other instead of mysteriously while they were apart, would have been more rewarding and uplifting. And hey, the whore can still die in the end too!
-
That movie also worked because Tom Hanks was phenomenal in it. He had to be funny, but unintentionally so. At the same time he had to represent this optimism/inner sadness that Forrest was forced to carry. Really, I can't understand people who write off his performance in Forrest Gump.
-
Cause the studio screwed him on the last one, not giving him the money he was owed by telling him the film was a "failure." Groom said he didn't want to be responsible for a sequel to a film that was a failure. They must've given him some major bank for this one.
-
And they said they wouldn't touch this career-destroying crap with a 40-foot pole.
-
I loved Forrest Gump. It deserved the Oscar for best picture, even though I love Shawshank and Pulp Fiction as well. Pulp Fiction was a polarizing film. Most people I know hate it.
I think if a sequel is done RIGHT, it might fly... but it would be SO terribly easy to screw it up. I'm picturing Iron Eagle 2 type screw up. I still can't believe they killed Doug Masters in the first few minutes. Idiots!
Best line of Forrest Gump (among many great ones) is when the drill sgt asks him what his sole purpose was in the army. Great stuff. But were they insinuating that stupid people are better fitted to Army life? hmmmmm -
What planet are you living on? They show it on TV constantly. It was just on one of the major networks on Saturday or Sunday night two weeks ago.
-
and also two of my top 10 films of all time. :-) Gump falls short of my top 10.
-
because that would just be sad.
-
If they make it anything like the book it will be even worse than Sharkboy and Lava girl (that movie having more retards in it). If you want to see forest make "New Coke" or go to Jim Bakers theme park, or see forest in space, then crash land in the jungle and get attacked by pygmies, then this is the movie for you! Those things actually happen to him in the books. Shoot me now
-
Remake the first Saw movie? That franchise declined in its later years, now is a great time to revive it.
-
And get pulled over for DUI.
-
...I'm impressed as hell with your take on this movie. It's deep, sensitive and unburdened by the usual right wing propaganda you seem compelled to spout so frequently. Kudos on showing signs of a soul I can relate to. That said, I do think the movie misses the point of the book, but it became something in its own right. Not something I've felt the need to revisit, but something I'm glad I saw once. I really don't think it should've beat out Shawshank, though.
-
True story, anchorite. Saluki, I take it your not the type of guy who goes to a movie to escape reality, but more so someone who seeks to idenitfy with the reality he can find in it. Unfortunately there's just not a whole lot of it in Forrest Gump. (However on a side note, this doesn't mean the message of a movie cannot be real or legitimate.)
-
We already had this debate a while back. I think the end result was for the most part, non-cynical, still believe we are/can be great American's liked it while utterly cynical Europeans who had been media fed their entire lives that America's a piece of shit hated it.
I for one liked it and thought it was a very entertaining film. I loved the music. While Pulp Fiction was a great storytelling film (and also very entertaining), I don't think it was the most inspirational film out there. With Gump their was great nostalgia, with Fiction there was a sense of "wow" what a cool, not been there before film. Bottom line: very different. -
Gump was a right-wing poster child and the ultimate follower. The evidence mounts for that scene after scene. But whatever. It makes for one wild ride, right? So why is the cynicism so important? Mostly because Gump shined most when he wasn't just staring off into space, but when he was either very caring, or quite angry. His anger, however, is simply played for laughs time and time again, while his caring side is directed perfectly. I feel it is a balance in emotions that is missing, and makes for a role model that has been written off by many, instead of remembered. Not dwelling on politics? Sure. Not dwelling on psycho-babble? Well, the story is of a man's life. It is all psycho-babble. I can't bring myself to call Gump a bad film. It falls into the same territory as other works like War of the Worlds, where the direction and production is perfectly sound, but the sum total is either a failed amalgam, or too one-minded to take seriously.
-
That is a good definition of why movies interest me. I'm not going to Revenge of the Sith for just "Schwing, schwing, waaaaaaa Jedi!". I'm going for the illusions to the Roman imperial turn, and consequences of brotherhood without trust too. It is this kind of thinking that makes, say, Christmas With The Kranks, all that much more interesting.
-
refuse to sell the rights to "Gump and Co." because Paramount wouldn't give him the millions they owed him for "Forrest Gump", which they outrageously claim hasn't made a penny?
-
Thankfully to my knowledge, the government isn't responsible for AIDS itself, but I do place a deal of blame on their doorstep when it comes to the SPREAD of the disease. It simply was not combated correctly on their behalf. Saying no one bears personal responsibility is taking my views too far. The trendy business man to the innocent school kid were all hit, so a real education to the populace was needed. Doing "what feels good" was simply not spawned by the 1960's. It was just as hip to do whatever in the 1920's as it was in the 1990's. The problem was that it became increasingly fatal in the 1980's. The straights didn't have to adopt a thing. They had been doing it since the beginning of time.
-
yeah, from Wikipedia (!): "The film was a huge commercial success, earning $677 million worldwide during its theatrical run (the top grossing film in North America released that year), although Paramount claimed it was a commercial failure and did not pay Groom his share of the profits. As such, Groom has refused to allow the novel's sequel, Gump and Co., to be filmed, stating that he could not in good conscience sell the rights to film the sequel to a failure."
- and yeah, i've also heard the 'Gump does what he's told and succeeds tremendously vs. Jenny rebels, gets crazy, sick and dies'... still dig the film (tho haven't watched it in years...) -
Sorry, but you say "your statements and views are in no way similar to any other view I've heard in my entire life" then say "You've repeated the same crap that I've heard before from others." Huh?
-
Holy shit, StrangeCo! Why are you so pissed? Calm down, man. Just breath...
-
The whore must die. No amount of breeding can absolve one of their torrid past. The whore must die.
-
"But that would be saccharine, and Saluki would deride it even more." Nail meet head. Plus, the grave scene is so damned emotional, I couldn't imagine altering it. Okay, I'm going to go cry now.
-
this should never ever be made. i love the first one, but a sequel is quite possibly the worst idea i've heard in a decade.
-
Run, fuckface, run!
-
"Do you want the "educating" government to educate us on safe ways to continue to do whatever "feels good" SAFELY?!?!?" Sure, Any taxpayer should. Our money is going to a Health Department afterall. Government isn't evil. It can be effective. See the education on lung cancer and AIDS today. See the hurricane disaster clean-up under Bush I & Clinton. Government is simply fallible from time to time, as the handling of AIDs awareness and Katrina have proven. I don't think we are disagreeing much here, just that you likely want me to confirm personal responsibility comes into play here as well. It always does. Just to different degrees for different people as you illustrated above.
-
You know, my wife doesn't like shit like Star Wars. She'd rather watch American History X any day of the week. It's almost like she can only feel like a movie's message is validated if it takes place in a realistic scenario. I don't think that is a conscience decision on her part, but I still think it is often true. I also can't help but feel, Saluki, that if you don't think a character is acting or reacting the way you think he should, or the way you think is more realistic for a person to behave, the his whole role is invalidated. It detracts from the movie for you. I'm not saying that I go to star wars to see "schwing schwing AAAAAAAH jedi" ("that's vrrrooom vrrrooom AAAAAAAH jedi" by the way) as a means of escaping the real world or parallels to such. Hey I enjoy that aspect too, but moreso I go to escape a reality that says its impossible to be good, or that everyone makes the wrong decision or the decision that I would make. I go to get outside MY reality, my perspective. Dodn't get me wrong, I enjoy just as much emphasizing with the characters too. I'm just saying I think you might not appreciate the characters that are different than what reality might dictate; the guys that do better than we ourselves would, the heroes...
-
THIS...IS...SPARTA!!
-
No, this is my first Gump talkback, ahahaha. You're sarcasm wasn't clear cut in writing, and I suppose calling me a Zealot or whatever is what makes others think you're pissed.
-
Yes, movies do get major props from me if the characters are making decisions even beyond my thinking, but I wouldn't say they are invalidated for making different or negative decisions. It is simply when they make choices that NO ONE with a half a brain would bother with that I give up trying to engage. This is why I don't watch Horror flicks.
-
Was your take on my name a reference to Army of Darkness? Hot damn that puts a smile on my face. Good call, good call...
-
Sorry, that was about the efficiency of government. Not Gump. However, I don't think we agree on either now. Funny stuff!
-
mentioning 300 makes me drool like one of Pavlov's dogs... Oh God yes...
-
Forrest Gump didn't have half a brain though... Ahh the beauty of innocence...
-
If everyone died in the first one, how the hell do you make a sequel?
-
And don't say "Aliens" or "Godfather II" because they both sucked. Forrest Gump 2 will suck and tarnish the first film like the Matrix sequels did...sad, but true.
-
Who needs to argue about Forrest Gump when we all agree Army of Darkness kicks ass... Ahhh, good times.
I have never seen The Day the Earth Stood Still. I did not know that. ...Learn something new everyday... -
Are you crazy or something? Don't you think that comment a lil' broooaaad... Hm?
-
what about... ah shit...
-
No, agreeing the consensus of government being fallible. And many people had their worldview and faith reaffirmed by Gump. It was freakin' huge. It isn't zealotry to see two sides of the same coin. Any coin. And I'm not buying this Ash ticket quite yet. The man's track record of saving people is sketchy at best, and he single handedly brought the Army of Darkness to life.
-
if they redid the special effects. it did have an awesome ending.
and what about health inspector II?
oops, did i spill the beans.
no, "oops, did i spill the beans" is the title. -
But Scarface sucks so hardcore. Anyone who likes that movie is a douche bag
-
I hope everyone realizes I was kidding... As such, Back to the Future 2 is arguably the greatest sequel of all time. I'm not saying that it's my personal favorite sequel or anything like that. It's not my favorite movie or anything. It's simply a genius expansion of the storyline set in part one... From the interaction Marty has with the storyline in the 50's to the imaginitive future sequence... The story line itself is great. And that cliff hanger ending! Shit. I think we all take for granted what a cliff hanger that really was the first time we saw that movie. It was just a perfect sequel. Runner up goes to T2.
-
I know I sound like it's my favorite sequel. Let me just clarify that I think there is a difference between something being perfect and something being your favorite.
-
His allegiance to big, super corporations like S-Mart also raises some concerns. Sure, the boomstick was made in Michigan, but what of those BBQ grills? Mexico? China? Chinexco!?!? This is all beside the point. Someone actually doesn't like Aliens. This is a freakin' national emergency!
-
waynes world 2 and addams family values were definately better, they took the set world the first ones invented and were able to expand in creative ways. thumbs up.
as for back te future 2 i could of done without MJF as a girl and his sons dorkyness. i liked the alternate 85 though. -
Twas a fine conversation but seeing as my workday is done, it is time for me to retire from this dismal office environmnent and bone the missus. Ta Ta.
-
"Plus, he'll personally leave the White House and kick ass on anybody who DOESN'T LIKE Aliens." Well he has my vote then. G'day everyone!
-
That's my favorite comedy

FYI. As a practicing pathologist I've got some bad news for you. I would hate to have facts get in the way of your leftist ramblings and all, but people who live like Jenny in Forrest Gump do tend to die at an early age. In real life. I'm not sure if it's a right wing conspiracy or not but drug use, sleeping around, and not taking care of oneself physically and emotionally tends to lead to an early grave. By contrast, Forrest's lack of drug use, frequent exercise, lack of promiscuity, and type B personality are associated with longer life expectancies. Some of these differences are due to "natural causes" and some are not. I assure you, as a physician who autopsies people at a coroner's office for (part of) my living, it is much more likely that a relatively young person who lived Jenny's lifestyle will show up on a stretcher rather than someone like Forrest. If it makes you feel better at night, maybe you can look at it like a "candle that burns twice as bright" thing. As for my part, the next time I'm autopsying a young person who lived a "hard" life, maybe I should just sign it out as a George Bush-related death because it's obviously a right wing conspiracy.
-
Forrest Gump was released in July that year. Pulp Fiction wasn't released until October. The only thing competitive with Gump that summer was The Lion King.
-
When I sat through it (on some regrettable date). Anyone know something Schwarzeneggery that was on then? It was loud. And rumbly. It may have been Harry's stomach, bleating in abject emptiness for a frozen burrito, but I doubt this.
-
...Than see this shit.
-
This isn't about conspiracy, it is about fictional fantasy. A good summary read as thus: Robin Wright's character was symbolic of more than hippies of the period (hippies were worthless, misguided, and self-destructive) - she symbolized American innocence. Young and full of hope, she was molested by her father, sending her down the dark path of decadent liberalism. She screwed around, became a hippie, on drugs, and getting used up and stretched out. The Black Panthers were not a flawed group of leftists fighting for equality in their community, they existed solely to beat up pretty white women. War protesters weren't protesting as much as saying the F word... a lot! America's innocence goes on to catch AIDS, realized too late it screwed up, then died after marrying a retard who will keep the dream of America alive despite the best efforts of hateful left wingers. End Summary. Oh, and Doctor_Sin, that was True Lies playing next door.
-
StangeCo not to highjack the thread, but your understanding of the AIDS crisis is seriously flawed. As one who was at the CDC at the time AIDS broke and is still there as a researcher in the NCID HIV group, I speak from first hand knowledge. It was both the gross mishandling and unwillingness to acknowledge the disease by the government as well as the typical scientific period of discovery combined with societal behavior that allowed for the spread of AIDS. These can’t be separated as we have seen what educating the public can do to change behavior and slow the number of newly identified cases. I think the point that many often make in arguing against someone “blaming the government for AIDS” is not that AIDS epidemic was the fault of the government, but that the problem could have been reduced. Are you seriously suggesting that AIDS is an over popularized problem? Your comparison seems to suggest so, but the statistics don’t support your view if that is it.
Additionally, by focusing on US statistics you are missing the point with respect to the US involvement in this disease. That is, we are trying to be a GLOBAL leader and currently 25 MILLION people have died of AIDS since 1981 and 40 million more have HIV. A tad more than the 12,000/year you were reciting. Global statistics, for cancer and heart disease show a combined 1.7 million deaths for Lung and Breast Cancer compared with AIDS stats (2.9 million died in 2006)(Coronary disease kills so many more as not to be worth discussing). Thus, globally AIDS has killed annually as many as breast cancer and lung cancer. Do the math, this virus is a devastating world problem. Sure, personal responsibility would take care of this, but since when has the human population ever behaved in a way that would be considered responsible. By the way, lymphadnopathy (a pathology), and Karposi’s sarcoma (a rare cancer associated with a depressed immune system that tended only to show up in AIDS patients…Karposi’s is caused by HHV-8 now called KSHV) were never and will never been names for HIV. HTLV was a name used, but that was mainly Robert Gallo trying to claim the “glory” of discovering the virus and puff up his claim by naming HIV similarly to other viruses he studied. Don’t destroy valid points by showing ignorance with respect to others.
Sorry to pick on you, it just bothers me when people spew statistics in this area and are playing loose with the facts. By the way, I ultimately agree with you regarding personal responsibility.

But they are very different stories. The novel is more cynical and zany. Forrest does everything. He goes into outer space with an orangutang, crash lands among pygmies and nearly gets eaten by headhunters. At one point he is also a chessmaster who farts during a competition with a Russian chessmaster and ends up in a schlock monster flick with Raquel Welch.
The movie is much more optimistic, with Forrest living through historical events and coming to terms with the hardballs life throws him. One thing I did like about the movie, though. Gump only used the "I got to pee" line once, instead of ad nauseam like the novel. Still, I don't think they should make the sequel. The first one was good enough. -
I never cared for or about Forrest Gump, anyway. And the book was actually even worse than the film, which is rare.
-
He'll meet Kurt Cobain on Conan O'Brien or Leno: "I later learned that nice man was addicted to heroin and blew his brains out"
Iran Contra: Gump will sail to Iran, meet Osama along the way, sail with the arms to central america then later help capture noriega
Added bonus- Forrest can accidentally invent the recipe for crack and start the crips/ bloods gang war.
And of course he'll teach Al Gore how to use the internet -
He'll run into monica lewinsky at the gap and she'll ask if he thinks the blue dress or red dress looks better on her.
-
So I can cry twice.
-
Just from reading the excerpt of the book on Amazon, it sounds like trash. Man, I hope they don't do this.
-
The parts with Jenny and Lt Dan made that movie
-
think of the possibilities...
-
...the movie writes itself!
-
No seriously, just run.

I loved Forrest Gump... whether Satire or serious commentary or jsut a bunch of stuff that happened, whatever the hell it was... it had heart! A feel-Good movie! You want to root for that retard! Anyone who hated this movie ought to go live in a dark cave and brood by themselves... The film and the character of Forrest probably point out something in yourselves that you're ashamed of, that's all I can reason for anyone not appreciating this film.I'm not American, I don't feel any need to live in America, but if Brits or others really canned this film, I believe it's because they're just pissed that it wasn't about them... maybe they can make their own Forrest Gump... maybe he's a homosexual and you can have him run around... ummm... the time you got the hell out of India or gave Hong Kong back to the Chinese... or maybe he was driving beside Princess Diana's limo... whatever the hell went on with you guys...Anyway, a sequel is A BAD IDEA!!!! Leave it alone you hacks!
-
..convinced more then ever we need Philadelphia 2:philadelphia freedom...
-
Probably True Lies.
-
Please. Not only were Shawshank and Pulp far superior, but Quiz Show was as well.
-
what i'm trying to say is gump should not meet hanks in the movie...unless hanks is shown filming something cool and they can work old footage of him shooting a cool movie into it...or not...whatever, haha
-
And have Forrest meet Tom Hanks, like in the book. Use old footage of Hanks so that present-day Hanks (Gump) can shake his own hand. That ALONE is insane-reason enough to make this movie.
-
....
-
that congradulate their stupid audiences for being stupid and encourage them to keep it up. Set it to music that makes certain demographics feel nostalgic, and throw in some catch phrases so the kids like it too. Fun for the whole stupid family!
-
The only reason Jenny died in Forrest Gump is because of the whole Joseph Campbell thing. Things don't happen in movies without a dramaturgical reason, and Jenny died because she's the mentor character and she's supposed to die. That's the only way Forrest can grow up. It's the same reason his mom and Bubba died.
-
...we need that like we need a sequel to E.T. or a prequel to Star Wars.
-
invent AICN. hehehehehehe.
-
Please don't let this movie get made.
-
Forest Gump has a bomb in his rib cage!
-
To parraphrase Forest Gump "You are not a very smart man." You seriously don't understand the focus of US medical research policy. We research HIV/AIDS not because its a US medical problem but because it is a global health problem and that ultimately affects the world economy. This is also true of Polio which receives tons of research dollars in the US but hasn't been responsible for a single infection in the US since the 1970s. The US gov sees helping other nations out with health related issues a way to get them back on their feet so we won't have to be subsidizing their existance in the future.
-
And I'm sure that's what this is gonna be. It'll stand on the Blockbuster shelf right next to the likes of From Dusk Till Dawn 2-3, Species 2-4, Hollow Man 2, Roadhouse 2, Carlito's Way: Rise to Power, Cruel Intentions 2-3, Wild Things 2-3, Behind Enemy Lines 2, Wrong Turn 2, I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer, Starship Troopers 2 and those countless American Pie sequels and spin-offs.
-
A) The mission of the US health organizations including the CDC and NIH is one of global health. Always has been.
B) Polio vaccine is NOT a cure its a prophylactic vaccine. If you have polio too bad so sad, you will always have it. There is NO cure. And we spend millions of dollars studying the virus every year (not all funding is public but since we're talking gov based research will stick to that). Just because there haven't been any new cases doesn't mean there aren't people living with the effects of Polio. There are literaly hundreds of viruses that are studied with NIH or other government funding that are not existing human health risks in the US. A cure or vaccine is not always the goal of medical research. NOt all viruses are studied for the purpose of understanding that virus, but the immune response to it so funding for a given virus may not be listed as "Polio research" but T-cell research, antibody research, or viral latency, or something else.
c) don't forget the Sabin vaccine
d) The 1960s estimate is just that an estimate. Given the fact that the gestation period can be long, we extrapolated using statistics back to when the numbers indicated it could have emerged. Nevertheless, patient 0 is still considered the French guy whose name is escaping me.
e) You're making my point that AIDS funding is a global concern...thanks
f) I never disagreed with your position on taking responsibility for one's owns actions nor the "it feels good mentality" for contributing. I just said you can't discount the governments contribution. I only mentioned this, because in your rederic you seemed to lose your point and not everyone is looney enough to believe the "gov conspiracy" theory with AIDS not even the poster you were reacting to.
g)we don't always research things here first because of the health risk in the US. Ever here of ebola...with the exception of the Reston, VA outbreak (monkey only strain) which occurred years after we began research here at the CDC, Ebola outbreaks exist only in Africa. The point is, we research all kinds of things that have no bearing on US health.
h) The rate of progression of a virus particularly HIV is directly related to the initial dose. Also, the viral strain and patients own immune classification affect the rate of progression. Some people, do to something in them, never contract HIV. We refer to those people as HEPS (highly exposed persistently seronegative). The first cases were very fast progressors. Also, the huge expansion of new cases and deaths is often associated with lack of testing. Regarding your 10yrs incubation+2yrs to get the word out theory, it was a tad more than two years for the gov. to get its act together...it was a known concern that was reported to the secretary of health in 80-81. Don Francis correctly extrapolated how big of a problem this could become (though in the US this never cam to fruition, it sure has in Africa and Asia). At the time, the gov. didn't want to spend money on what it felt was a disease relegated to an "undesirable" segment of society. Thus, the number of infections/deaths could have been drastically reduced. In fact, funding directed towards HIV wasn't available until the mid to late 80s. The message didn't go out until at least 84 or 85. The point is, part of the claim to a conspiracy is misplaced not because the gov didn't drag its feet nor because the gov. didn't intend to do so (true on both accounts). What is incorrect is the rationale behind it...HIV just wasn't believed to be a concern for middle America and not worth the effort. There was probably also a little "who cares about them" going on. However, people were never intentionally infected or left to die in hope the homosexual population would die out. That said, HIV wasn't a big focus until hemopheliacs and heterosexuals contracted the virus. You assume that everyone with HIV that died with AIDS in 1995 was infected 10yrs earlier. Not true, many likely weren’t infected but a few years. Furthermore, during the 80s, infections occurred at a near exponential rate. Anyway, we do agree, the gov shouldn’t shoulder all or even most of the blame for the spread of AIDS/HIV, but they do share some of the burden. -

"I'll always be your girl... BROTHER!!!"

I know Gump & Co. had been mentioned around the late 1990's, but when Hanks and Zemeckis refused to return, Paramount scrapped it saying it wouldn't work without them.
I suppose if money became an issue, they might return...
